It’s been 25 years since Harmon and Mildred Childs married. In that time, Mildred has raised two sons and built an exceptional advertising agency. Meanwhile, Harmon has remained seated at his typewriter, now keyboard, oblivious of his family and their achievements. In the 25 years, Harmon has become famous. His stage plays shine on Broadway, his screenplays are constant award winners, and his books are must reads for the masses. Perhaps the only thing larger than Harmon’s success is his ego. But Mildred is fine with Harmon and his ego - that is until she gets his special anniversary present.
STORMLESS VOWS is a wild ride from Hollywood to New York, with plenty of down-home Wyoming grit. It’s a story of being middle-aged and how we sometimes need a wake-up call. It’s a story brimming with fun characters and entertaining dialects – a standard found in most of Dean’s books.
Set aside a few hours and have a few giggles with this charming romantic comedy. It’s light, fast-paced reading.
Having just finished and loved another Terry Dean book, Letters To My Wife, I was a little apprehensive about reading this, just in case it didn't live up to the standards I had already set in my mind for it. I needn't have worried though because this is another cracker of a read from the author. A lot more light hearted, it is the story of Harmon and Mildred, whose 25 year marriage runs into trouble when Harmon totally messes up with his gift to Mildred for their Silver Wedding Anniversary.
They are an absolutely fantastic couple to read about. Harmon is an extremely successful author, totally focussed on his work and with an ego the size of a large planet. Mildred is a successful businesswoman in her own right and she comes complete with a stock of one-liners to die for. It doesn't matter what anyone says to her, she comes right back at them.
This is an absolute dream of a read - funny and moving at the same time, a story of how a marriage can get stuck going nowhere. The synopsis says "how we sometimes need a wake-up call" and I can't put it any better than that, and believe me, Mildred has a whole repertoire of wake-up calls at her disposal!
