Rowdy McDermott has a plan. Stay on the straight and narrow, help the foster boys on Sunrise Ranch and forget about love. The last thing he expects is his pretty new neighbor falling literally into his arms. Lucy Calvert is glad the handsome cowboy broke her fall, but isn't ready for the feelings he's stirring in her heart. She's heard rumors about his past, and is steering clear from the kind of man he used to be. With a little help from his boys, can Rowdy show her that people— and hearts—can change?

What readers are saying: Debra always delivers... Couldn't put it down! Debra gives readers what they want. I've read every book Debra Clopton has written and as usual I couldn't put this one down!
What can I say? I’m a HUGE DEBRA CLOPTON fan. When I spot one of her books, I don’t hesitate to get it. Actually the opposite. I’m constantly on the lookout for the next.
Rowdy McDermott lives up to his name, but no more. No, he’s a changed man. The last woman he hooked up with shocked him into realizing he didn’t like the man he’d become.
Lucy Calvert moved into her uncle’s place, hoping to live a secluded life - for the most part. One that didn’t involve men. The last thing she expected was to fall into the arms of a handsome cowboy from the ranch next door. Literally!
I could read the beginning pages of HER UNEXPECTED COWBOY by DEBRA CLOPTON, over and over, again. It’s that good. As soon as I began to read, I knew I was done for. It wouldn’t be long before I found myself reading the last page. MS CLOPTON’S books have that affect on me.
I could go on and on about her incredible writing. Her ability to deliver an amazing story, with three-dimensional characters. How her books always capture my attention to the point, it makes it nearly impossible to rip myself away from them. How all the character are likeable. That I fall for the hero every time. But then I’d be just repeating myself from one review to the next.
"Don't let your scars stop you, Lucy".....(pg 276) these words made the tears flow....what a great love story! so heart-warming..this one is definitely a re-read! Thanks Debra, for sharing your God given talent with us once more! eagerly awaiting future books, especially ones about the Cowboys of Sunrise Ranch. God Bless You!!
Awesome read. The author's portrayal and description of life on the boy's ranch and of the boys pulls at the heart strings and made me wish I could do something like that. Although these are fictional characters, the scars on Lucy and even more, on Tony, were heartbreaking but yet had great lessons.
Rowdy was a great character with a bad past he was trying to escape and make up for.
I actually read the 3rd book in the series a while back, but this one makes me want to read the first also
While I really liked the concept of loving someone despite their scars (physical or emotional), I thought Lucy's emotional back and forth was a bit too much. I liked that Rowdy was committed to change, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ranch boys. I just felt like the ending was too neat. Lucy suddenly overcoming her fears didn't ring true.
This is a quick, safe read that provides good escape at the end of a busy day. I like the hero Rowdy and the theme of the novel: everyone bears scars of one kind or another. Debra Clopton usually provides a good book.
This story kept me interested and wanting more. Debra Clopton is a fantastic author. The story about the boys and turning their lives around on a ranch at times pulls on your heart strings.
Can you move beyond your mistake and bad choices in life? That’s what this story is about Rowdy and Lucy’s story is about getting past those mistakes in life and seeing where life is going to take them! It’s a great book!
She lost Tim in the Fire, her husband. As Lucy was in the burn center she found out that he was having an affair and this woman wasn’t the first. She came to Dew Drop, Texas bought a house etc and met the family next door. And the story begins. Don’t put it down. Just read read read.
Debra Clopton is well known for writing books that have real meaning behind them and this one did not disappoint me! Rowdy and Lucy were trying to get past their past old mistake and get on with their lives without reliving them! They just had to figure that out!
When I received Her Unexpected Cowboy by Debra Clopton in the mail, I was just going to read the the introduction pages. I had another print book that was in my review pile next so I intended to place this one under it. However after reading the intro pages I kept reading, the next thing I knew I was 25 pages into the story. Ms. Clopton has once again written one of those wonderful stories that grabbed my attention right away. I really enjoyed Her Unexpected Cowboy, the second book in the Cowboys of Sunrise Ranch series. This is a really great series that is full of those wonderful cowboys that I know a lot of us love to read about.
Rowdy has been burned by love in the past, he has no intention of falling in love again, maybe EVER! However when he stops by to greet the new neighbor Lucy, he finds himself intrigued.
Lucy has been through a lot and has the scars to prove it. Her scars make her very self conscious and she really doesn't want anyone else to see them.
I really liked Lucy. She strong, tough, and brave with a little bit of fear and not a lot of self confidence. She likes to take her frustration out on her house that she is remodeling. I loved that she would pick up a sledge hammer and take down a wall. I can really see where this would relieve some anger and frustration. However the boys of Sunrise Ranch were a little afraid she might take out a few too many walls.
Lucy is not looking for a relationship either and fights Rowdy's offers of help many times before she gives in and allows him and the boys to help her. Not only were the boys able to help with the work on the house and barn but Tony (one of the boys) helps her see that her scars are not as unattractive to other people as she thinks.
On the whole I really enjoyed this book. It is full of a lot of emotional moments that brought a few tears and there is also some really humorous moments that made me laugh. The romance between Rowdy and Lucy is so sweet as it grows. These two are exactly what the other needs.
I have been a fan of Debra Clopton's work since I had the chance to read Her Forever Cowboy. She has a way of telling a very moving story with a lot of meaning but also throws some great humor in as well. I LOVE the Sunrise Ranch Series and what they are doing for these wonderful children. I can't wait to see what Ms. Clopton has in store for the next book. I will be anxiously awaiting it's release.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Her Unexpected Cowboy.
In Book 2 of Cowboys of Dew Drop, Texas, Debra Clopton does what she is one of the best at doing, tackling tough subjects such as child abuse and unfaithful spouses head on. She uses her storyline and characters to give us insight into the aftermath of such behaviors and still gives us romance, humor and surprises. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to Book 3.
Unexpected Cowboy by Debra Clopton Cowboys of Dew Drop, Texas Series Book Two Rowdy McDermott was rightly named. After the death of his mother, while he was young, he rebelled. Then a situation woke him up, and Rowdy had promised God that he’d change. And he had. He had promised God he’d not get into a relationship until he knew it was from God. And then the new neighbor fell into his arms. Lucy Calvert was so thankful that her great-uncle had left her his home in his will. Beautiful property with a barn perfect for making a studio for her art. And the peace she needed for her healing. And then Rowdy came along and wouldn’t leave her alone. Both Rowdy and Lucy needed healing from scars. Lucy’s were physical and emotional. Rowdy had the scars of all he’d done in his past that he was learning to leave behind and become a new creature in Christ. I love this new series. Loveable characters, especially the foster boys who are living on the ranch. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Rowdy McDermott was always the one of three sons that gave his father the most worry. But now he's a hard worker, and is trying to take a break from women after his last girlfriend's husband punched him in the nose. The woman he meets has scars left over from her late husband's affairs she didn't know about until after his death. Add to that a lot of boys who have had their hearts broken and you have a pretty good story.
Lucy has scars on the outside as well, and she relates with one of the boys from the ranch who worries about his own scars. I cannot imagine what these two go through, but I loved Rowdy's gentleness toward these two!
The romance was a bit slow and there wasn't enough drama to suit me, but it had a lot of good life lessons about beauty and what matters in life.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Her Unexpected Cowboy". It's a story about two people each with a past that they are trying to overcome and they find one another along the way. You feel for both characters and want them to find their way to each other. I liked how the book had some unique touches to it- like the boys who live on the ranch. I know I am looking forward to the next book out in this collection. Hoping to find out more about the stories of the boys on the ranch as well. I felt the book was well-written and free of grammatical errors. If you are looking for a story that you become wrapped up in the characters and are cheering for them to be together - then this is a must read!
I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
Her Unexpected Cowboy was a very good book. Rowdy works on his fathers ranch helping with foster boys. He has a bad past history of chasing women. He got involved with a married women but he didn't know she was married. Moving into the house just down the road is Lucy. She inhered from her uncle who passed away. She has a bad past history. Her husband cheated on her. They were in a fire. He died, but Lucy has some really bad scars all over her body except her face. She does not trust men. One of the foster boys has burns all over his back from his dad. There is a lot of healing to do for everyone. Need to read it to see how they all heal. A caring family to take in troubled foster children. A very good read.
I loved this story. But then I am a sucker for any of Debra's hunky cowboy tales! Glad this was the one to end my 2013 reading challenge! I liked the theme of scars that was through this particular inspirational story. Whether they are seen or not, we all have scars, and all have messed up in one way or another. It's moving forth and trying to do better each day is what matters, and loving each other in spite of the imperfections. Loved Lucy's spunk, the fireworks were great! I could also imagine it would be fun to sledgehammer walls... I could relate a lot to her! ;)
Debra Clopton knows how to do cowboy!!! Love this series and all the young boys with all their personalities, to say nothing of all the other characters. Rowdy and Lucy are a great couple. I love how the story is brought to a close. Not only does Lucy need to have someone love her despite her scars, but she has to see past others 'scars'.
This is the first book of Debra Clopton that I have read but it sure won't be my last. I loved this heartwarming story and the great characters in this book. You will not be able to put down this book. 5 out of 5 stars!
I thought this was a good story, but sometimes it seemed as if her editor said, "Hey, this needs more excitement" and she just threw in the first random thought that came to her head.
