Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?

In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.

High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.

College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.

Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.

In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.

Bailey Collins is a federal agent investigating a kidnapping that she believes occurred in a Texas cattleman club, and millionaire rancher president Gil Addison is the one who has to reluctantly let her took at the club's records. He's got a four-year-old son that he's raising single-handedly after his first wife killed herself. Of course, Bailey and Gil are attracted to one another. The relationship keeps progressing, even though Bailey isn't what Gil thought he wanted in a woman, whereas Bailey knows she'll have to leave town when her assignment is over.

The single father trope in category romance, for me, often seems to involve the hero being a complete asshole to the heroine because he doesn't want her coming into his life and hurting his child's feelings once they leave again. Thankfully, that trope is avoided here. Gil Addison has a level head on his shoulders. He has always done what's best for his son, but recognises that he has to live his own life as well. This leads to the remarkably sane decision of actually having a conversation with his son about women being in his life! Who would have thought?

Bailey was also a level-headed and smart heroine. She holds back on her feelings for Gil because she doesn't want to hurt Cade because of the inevitability of her leaving town after her assignment is over. However, she is not cold or distant. Just conflicted about getting in deeper with Gil and Cade when she tells herself she shouldn't. The book also flipped the usual scenario of the hero holding out to the end. This time, it was Gil who was sure what he wanted out of life and tried to work out solutions to achieve it.

That's the sort of hero I like to read about! Who wants a whining, juvenile billionaire when you've got guys like Gil who are confident, intelligent and caring?

I wanted to like this more, because it's always refreshing to have a hero and heroine that don't make you want to reach into the pages and shake them for their idiocy. Gil and Bailey are smart, likeable, and I wanted them to have a happy ending. However, I have to admit the story was just a little dull. There wasn't much emotional intensity to it. Also, the plot has some suspense elements that you wouldn't normally find in this line, so keep that in mind before starting.

A harmless, easy read, but nothing memorable.

I’ve read a few of the Desire books but I think I liked this one the most. It had plenty of desirous moments without being down-right ridiculous. It was also about the kidnapping of Alex, who got away or was released but no one knew which since he had amnesia when he got home. And the answers were still not answered at the end of this story.

Bailey was a state investigator sent to figure out what happened to Alex. Gil was a ranch owner who wanted Bailey, but didn’t want to want her. Needless to say, they finally got together, while Bailey continued to look into the kidnapping and Gil became more and more confused about his growing feelings for Bailey.

This was a very good romance-mystery and I will definitely be reading more of Janice Maynard.

There was explicit sex in this story but it was very well written. It was romantic sex instead of erotic sex.

As to the narration: Yeah, I really didn’t like Jack Garrett all that much. I don’t know how he got so many 4 and 5 star reviews. He doesn’t even try to feminize his voice but he does read with emotions. Actually, I do prefer male narrators to MOST female readers. I can handle a woman with a little deeper voice but I can’t stand all the heroes and the males in the books sounding just like a woman. Although Mr. Garrett does have a nice reading voice he needs to practice his women’s voices.

2.5-3 stars

While I can't say it was bad, I'm not sure I can say it was great, either.

It did have a lot of potential to be an awesome read with this decent writing style and likeable characters.

However, it was all happening waaaaaaaay too fast for my liking or to make it all believable.

Hence the missing stars.

But I am intrigued and will deffo check this author's other books.

Very good continuation of the series. As president of the TCC, Gil has to deal with Bailey and her investigation into Alex's kidnapping. As a man, he has to deal with his intense attraction to her. She's not at all what he had in mind for a future wife and mother for his son, but he can't seem to keep his distance.

I really liked both Gil and Bailey. When his wife died, Gil decided that he would do everything in his power to give his son all the love and attention he needed. He has turned most of the day to day work on his ranch over to his foreman. While he has no regrets about making Cade the center of his life, he does admit to himself that it can be rather lonely. He would like to find a woman who would be a good match for him and mother for his son, thinking that a traditional sort of woman would be perfect.

The story opens with Bailey arriving to do yet another interview with Gil, who still resents her poking around in the lives of his friends. This time she meets Gil's son Cade, who gives Bailey a whole new perspective on Gil and what makes him tick.

Bailey has been working hard on her investigation. She is determined to find out who is responsible for Alex's kidnapping. To that end she lets Gil know that she needs access to the membership records at the TCC. This ends up requiring them to spend a lot of time together, and brings the sizzling attraction they feel for each other to the surface. Bailey doesn't want the attraction to distract her from getting the job done, but being around Gil and Cade makes her realize that there is something very important missing from her life. She has spent so long depending on no one except herself that allowing Gil to get close to her and leaning on him is a scary idea for her.

One of the things I liked most about the relationship between Gil and Bailey is that they are very aware of the effect it could have on Cade. Gil knows that Cade has been on the lookout for a new mother and doesn't want to give him any ideas that could then cause him to be hurt. Bailey's own experiences of having lost her mother at a young age gives her great empathy with Cade and allows her to relate to him very well. There are some wonderful scenes of the two of them together that also make Gil realize what a wonderful mother Bailey would be.

Gil worries a lot about Bailey and her job. With the kidnapper still unknown, he fears that she could be in danger as she moves further along in her investigation. When she is attacked his fears for her are overwhelming. The identity of the attacker was a very interesting twist that I did not see coming.

Audiobook
Bailey was very unprofessional for law enforcement. She chased him like a school girl from beginning to end. Meanwhile he's always telling her how to do her job and that she could die. I mean, she's in law enforcement, not a Bakery owner. I'm sure the little woman knew she chose a job that might get her killed. Duh.
She's written to be pretty terrible at her job. 🙁
She didn't realize she really just wanted to be a housewife and a Mom. 🇺🇸 😆
Thank goodness Gil is a Billionaire 💰 🤑 💸

A book that feels like a series . It ends by not be completed.

The original story takes a step away and a romantic relationship takes over. While that is a good story the book feels incomplete. Enjoyed father and son finding a connection.

Premise was good, saw the twist ahead of time, but it was still enjoyable. The writing though was painful...the kind of romance writing that I hate. Had to force myself to get past it to finish.

Great cowboy tale

I like Maynard's writing style. She moves the reader easily to the next episode and heightens the interest level. She's a great storyteller.

I saw this book on the shelves at Walmart & decided to pick it up & take it home. i usually do my readings on Kindle & i told my self I was going to read this book slowly but that didn't happen . I love this book. & When I finally reached the last page I was satisfied. I felt a sense of peace and i don't know, just the feeling of satisfaction and giddiness. & that night after I finished, I lied down I couldn't move at all and i saw flashes of a woman holding a book. It was scary .

The romance itself was good even if the ending seemed a little rushed, but this book is not standalone. I haven't read the others and the mystery our heroine is investigating wasn't solved. So, overall I was not satisfied.
