Oh, boy! Where do I start with this one?
First, I have to get off my chest how much I hated the main character Marcie Powers! She was a f***ing bitch! Excuse my language, but I need to impress just how truly awful and horrible this woman is. She asks estranged hubby Joe for his help, but then proceeds to constantly get pissy at him over EVERY SINGLE THING he does! She blames him for "letting" their child get stolen. Marcie, honey, no parent "lets" their child get stolen. That blame should go squarely on the sociopath who does the child-stealing. Not the poor guilt-ridden parent, you horrid, sniveling, selfish waste of space. Gosh, she really got me fired up! If she's not reminding Joe that he lost their child or that she hates him, she's randomly bringing up all the times in the past he's failed her as a husband. She keeps this snotty attitude up all the way until the end. Just pages before they're apparently living happily ever after, she's telling him she hates him and it's all his fault! I absolutely detested her!
I didn't want these two to have a happily-ever-after! I was hoping Joe would sue for custody of little Joshua so he wasn't raised by a self-absorbed psycho! What sort of future would these two have? How long would it be before Marcie was flying off the handle and telling Joe she hated him because he burnt the steaks?
Joe was a solid hero. I felt bad for him that he would be spending the rest of his life tied to a hot mess like Marcie. He had a firm grip on the idiot ball, however. Despite knowing that Marcie doesn't like him keeping information from her, he keeps on doing it. Even when that information is on the front page of the freaking newspaper! The book had a pattern: Joe would get an idea. He wouldn't tell Marcie. Marcie would get pissed at him when she found out the truth and tell him how much she hated him and how everything was his fault.
There are two loooong, seemingly neverending chapters at the house on stilts while Marcie waits to hear from the abductor. The author trots out the old "mother lion protecting her cub" cliche. Joe grabs Marcie from behind at one point for no other reason than to end a chapter on a cliffhanger, because it makes no goddamn sense that he would otherwise do that!
Gosh, I hope my next Intrigue read isn't as bad as this one!
