Kate Bell isn't perfect. Not even close. The things she got up to in college would cause her parents to fall off their pedestals in shock. Home for the summer vacation, Kate settles in for a long, boring break in the tiny backwater of Winter with folks who still treat her like she's twelve.

Then Ben Parker arrives and suddenly Winter gets interesting. He's hot, mysterious and good with his hands. Kate falls for him instantly, but her cop father warns her to stay away. But how can she stay away from someone as compelling as Ben? Someone who thinks she's perfect just the way she is?

When Ben's dark secrets catch up to him, not only is Kate's heart in danger of being broken, but Ben's entire future could be ruined.

RUIN is a short new adult contemporary romance novel intended for mature readers. It contains strong language and sexual situations.

How lush is that cover?!?!

This is fairly short, it weighs in at about 129 pages, but it's an engaging read all the same. I love this kind of set up - sleepy old town, nothing happening when a gorgeous and mysterious stranger rolls in to disturb the status quo.

This is exactly what we get with Ben. He gets off the bus in Winter (the town not the season!) and Kate and Jane can hardly believe their luck. After a bit of convicing he decides to stay at Jane's grandmother's house in return for board and lodging. Kate, Jane's best friend, has got her sights set firmly on Ben but he's a reticent soul - he hasn't got a lot to say for himself and he's obviously harbouring some fairly dark secrets but she can see the pain in those sorrowful eyes and is desperate to know more about him. Ben, for his part, is convinced that he is not the kind of guy that Kate needs to be involved with and resists her very determined onslaught for as long as is physically possible!

As I was reading this, and the story played out in my imagination, I got the strong impression that it was like watching a Nicholas Sparks movie adaptation of one of his novels - small town USA, secrets to be revealed and a gorgeous, soulful hero.

I loved Ben - I did actually guess his secret exactly although I think it was a lucky guess, it's not obvious from the text. He's a man holding back all his emotions - he's got a lot of demons in his past and he doesn't want to let anyone in or allow himself to become attached. He's looking for answers, a place to feel he belongs and he's desperately in need of someone to care about him.

My only problem with the novel was that I didn't much like Kate. I did eventually warm to her but it took the whole novel. I found her to be brattish, sulky and I hated the way she treated her parents. But it's a minor gripe and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

Her best friend Jane and her very ornery grandmother were great secondary characters. I'd very much like to see Jane find a man to care for her when all she seems to do is care for everyone else. She needs her very own hero - hopefully in the next book!

So, a great beginning to an intriguing new series, a delicious hero and a plot with a few twists and turns and surprises waiting for you.

First I would like to say, wow! The cover is amazing, it is what drew me in.
After that things didn't go as well for this book for me.
This book was rushed, I felt where the story was going was obvious. In saying this I liked the story, I liked the idea of the book. I think if it had a bit more length and substance it would have done better.
The heroine was not my favourite in fact I out and out disliked her for the majority of the book.
She seemed virtually unhappy with everything, even though her life seemed fine to me, she was out to prove something and I guess she just rubbed me the wrong way.
What saved this book for me was Ben. I liked his personality, his story, he soothed my raw nerves ;)
Ruin was a really short story, I believe it only took me about an hour to read, but like I said I believe this could have done better being stretched out and infused with a bit more detail and suspense.

" Like I said, Winter was the Sleeping Beauty of Montana. Except no prince came to wake the princess. Princes avoided Winter like she had the plague......Until now."
Exactly until now when mysterious gorgeous hunky man gets off the bus, and meets the girl.
Kate has been away to college but is home, back in sleepy Winters with her family and friends. She and Jane her friend are at the cafe when Ben Parker gets off the bus. Since no one ever gets off and stays in Winter's Kate is wondering who and what he is about. Kate and Jane decided to find out, he tells them he is just staying for a short time and has no money. Kate and Jane work out a plan where he can work at Jane's Grandma's, Mrs. Merrweather's home which is in bad repair for room and board. He agrees, but Ben has secrets that not everyone knows about, and he wants to keep it that way.
I really enjoyed this story Ben is hot, mysterious and a really good guy. Kate is smart, knows what she want which is definitely Ben. At times she comes on a little to strong with all her lusting over him, it felt a little desperate in the beginning. They do seem to have a connection but all the secrets get in the way. I liked how Ben tries really hard to help Jane and her Grandma. I also enjoyed watching Ben and Kate fall in love with each other. This story had great characters and a great mysterious story line. Will Ben's secrets be to much for Kate and the community to handle? Read and find out!

For a quick read, RUIN packs in a whole lotta drama!

It’s the classic story line of the small town sheriff’s daughter who is also a “good girl” falls for the vagabond bad boy.
I'm not perfect. Not by a long shot. If my parents knew what I got up to at college, they'd be horrified. I've slept with more guys in the last three years than I care to talk about. I've smoked God knows what, I've skipped class, and last month I woke up in the gutter without any underwear. See? I'm not fucking perfect!
Well, just to be fair, I think most parents would keel over if they knew what their kids got up to in college – there are some things a parent just never needs to know and that would be one of them.

I fell in love with Ben right away. He’s a good guy with a bad boy stigma attached to him and I think he’s just perfect for Kate Bell. She’s not a good girl, but everyone thinks she is… kind of ironic, isn’t it? Ben and Kate both have secrets, Ben’s secrets just happen to be pretty earth shattering. One of his big secrets was really no surprise to me, but despite the predictability, I quite enjoyed the journey.

I will definitely be checking out the follow up book in this new series to see where life takes this sexy young couple.

This is a real short story, it's 113 pages on my Nook. I found the main character, Kate was just too pushy for my tastes while the male lead, Ben was a tad too soft.

Kate, Way to win the guy who thinks your perfect's heart...

"And another thing. I'm not perfect. Not by a long shot. If my parents knew what I got up to at college, they'd be horrified. description

Kate was a hard main character to relate to and the love portion of the story felt completely rushed. The hea felt too fast for where the characters stood with each other. I also found the secret reveals somewhat predictable.

I will however read the next installment in the series about Jane because she was sweet and I'm interested to see what C.J. Scott has instore for her.

On a positive note, this cover is hot!

Ruin by C.J. Scott surprised me in a very good way. I already knew I liked C.J. 's writing, but I haven't had good luck with novella's in the past. However I was worrying for nothing because after reading Ruin, she's moved up to the short list of authors who if I know it is by her, I'll be more than willing to read it.

What I liked: As soon as it started, I was sucked in. Ruin is short, but don't let that fool you. There is a ton of worldbuilding here, done so skillfully that it never becomes bothersome. Every single sub character has wants, and clear motivations. They have histories and rich, definable personalities. It's very easy to see how the different people are going to class just because of what they want. I feel like I got to know them so well that they might as well be my neighbors. The scenery is also beautifully portrayed, and now I want to go on vacation to the town of Winter. The people and places just truly came alive for me. I also loved how clear and distinct Katie's voice was. She's such a fun character, with a great personality.

I started to get worried about 30% into the book because I had so many questions: What was Ben running from? Would they manage to fall in love? Would it be believable? Will we get to see resolution with Jane and Mrs. M? What about Katie and her parents? Knowing this was a novella and I was approaching halfway through, I started to think that I was about to have a cliffhanger shoved down my throat rather than being given a complete story. I started to think I was going to be unhappy and unfulfilled or else the pace was going to be far to fast at the end in order to wrap everything up.

And I was wrong.

(yes, it happens occasionally)

C.J. Scott is a master. She kept a perfect pace, leaving me racing through, only to wind up grinning at the end. Next time, I'll know better while reading and will trust more than everything will be just as it should be, because this novella was a total delight.

What I didn't like: Umm... I still want more. Not because I have unanswered questions, but because I enjoyed these characters so much, I want more. I want them to be friends who I can go have coffee with, or visit. I'm not ready to say goodbye. Fortunately, the series is continuing with Jane's story and hopefully Katie and Ben will make appearances =) I've got my fingers crossed.

Short and sweet review for a short read. C.J. Scott's "Ruin" was a book I was on the fence about, but the premise was enough for me to pick it up. The novel, as a whole, isn't quite vetted out, and rather formulaic. So formulaic that, well, I found it uneventful and unsurprising for 127 pages.

Kate is a "good girl" home from college in her small, uneventful town called Winter. Lo and behold, Ben Parker (which is rather unfortunate considering his name is shared with a character from Spiderman, and actually a footballer/soccer player too) waltzes into said uneventful town and makes the place suddenly more interesting. Kate's filled with instalust and wants to do everything in her power to make said stranger stick around, even when he says he's just passing through. Note that she's making him stick around not because she knows anything about the stranger, but because she can't help but notice how "hot" he is. *rolls eyes*

Kate's determination proves fruitful as her efforts allow Ben to stay in order to fix the roof for the aunt of a friend (Jane). But things aren't what they seem as Kate's father's an officer of the law, and Ben's background's too mysterious as not to invite questions. Her parents, as well as people in the surrounding town, aren't exactly happy with the idea of Kate hooking up with Ben.

I had a hard time following this story because it was so threadbare and dry in the narrative. Very little connected me to the characters, and I could predict what would happen in the storyline - point by point, even the big reveal. The sensuous scenes were quick and dashed off, bit awkward in inclusion and for motivation as well. The problem was that I felt like I was being told the story and walked through it without feeling any kind of true investment for the characters. Granted, the bare bones approach of it could've been great for a fuller novel, but this felt like it could've had more to it than what it did. Others may appreciate it for being a quick read, but I was left wanting more from it than what it offered.

Overall score: 1.5/5 stars

20-year-old Kate is home from college in the small village on Winter where she grew up, when 24-year-old Ben arrives in town.

Ben is broke and has nowhere to stay, so Kate suggests he stay with her friend and her grandmother and in return work on their house for them. This also means that Kate will get the chance to get to know him better.
Who is Ben though? What is he doing in Winter? And will he give Kate what she wants?

This was an okay erotic romance story, but I felt that the sex happened quite quickly.

Kate was an okay character. She seemed determined to do what she wanted to do, no matter what anyone else thought of her, and she was pretty determined that once she saw Ben she was going to have him.

The storyline in this one was okay, but it didn’t take long for Kate and Ben to end up in bed together, and it just seemed like it was about the sex rather than anything else as they barely knew each other. The relationship started out as lust on Kate’s part, and there didn’t really seem to be much emotion and feeling involved until later in the story.
The erotic parts of the story were okay, and fairly short, and again I didn’t feel like there was all that much emotion involved.

The mystery of who Ben was and what he was doing in town was quite interesting, and I didn’t guess what was really going on, or why Ben was so secretive. I thought that the ending was okay, but was a little surprised at the way things worked out as Kate was going to be leaving to go back to college quite soon after the events in this book, so the pair wouldn’t be together when that happened anyway.
Overall; an okay erotic romance, with a mystery storyline, but lacking something for me.
6.5 out of 10.

I was really sure what to expect with Ruin. The synopsis is very vague but that is a good thing because the reader is really able to sit back and experience the ride.

Ruin had me hooked the entire time. I had so many questions and couldn't stop reading - I needed to get my answers.

Ruin starts off with a stranger showing up in the boring little town of Winter. Kate, a college student spending the summer at home with her parents, feels an instant connection to the stranger - Ben Parker. Ben is so mysterious but Kate believes he is good & starts to form a relationship with him. The problem is not everyone in the sleepy town of Winter believes this mysterious stranger is innocent. I loved the mystery of Ben and wanted answers just like the rest of the town. I love that C.J. Scott completely caught me off guard. Some of the books out right now have predictable plots - Ruin definitely did not!!

My only complaint is that I felt the end was a tad bit rushed. The back of the book has the synopsis for the next book in the series and I was honestly a little disappointed - it is about Kate's friend, Jane. She is a nice girl & all, but I wanted more of Ben & Kate!! SO much of their relationship was in turmoil from the enigma surrounding Ben. I wish I could have seen how he was without that pressure.

Oh well, I guess it's not too bad if my biggest gripe is wanting more, right?!
If you like some mystery & are looking for a book that is not predictable - I would recommend you give this one a read.

Mystery man In a Small Town

**I was provided a free copy of this book via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

This book started off with so much potential. I loved the author's descriptive writing. I could actually picture the small town of Winter and Jane's home in my head as I was reading the book.

I actually started off liking the main character Kate. She is very forward and blunt and I enjoyed that until she was became so pushy with Ben that she seemed almost desperate. Ben on the other hand was mysterious and added new life to the story.

If this book had been a full length novel I think it would have been better. There would have been more room for character building and relationship build-up. Ben and Katie's romance moved entirely too fast. They slept together within hours and declared their love to one another within a very short period of time. It was just unbelievable. The parents also "hovered" over Katie and that seemed very implausible for a woman in her twenty's.

After reading this book I can see a world of potential that wasn't quite realized. The writing and world building were very good but I kept waiting for more from this story. Unfortunately I didn't get what I was looking for. This was an OK read for me. I did somewhat enjoy it and will be on the lookout for other books from this author but I think given a longer book and more time to develop a storyline then this writer could be fantastic.

Ruin by C.J. Scott
3.5 Stars

The story starts off as the main character Kate, a college student, comes back to her hometown of Winter, for the summer. She hates the small, dying town where she grew up and only comes back because her parents guilt her into it. Things start looking up, when a sexy “stranger” comes to town, she decides immediately to befriend him. Only her feelings for him develop rather rapidly and in a very short time. When I say short time, I mean short as in hours. This development in the story seems so rushed and made the storyline unbelievable to me. They fall into bed and in love so it seems. He tries to push her away immediately, because he says he is not right for her and she starts to think he is keeping secrets. It turns out secrets are in fact being kept and they eventually come to light making her “stranger” not so much a stranger to her or her town. Other then the relationship that formed so quickly and not being very believable the premise of the book was good but just could have been developed a bit more, therefore making the book a bit longer as well. It was an ok read for me.

A mysterious stranger and a small town girl…..

Copy received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Who wouldn’t look twice when a gorgeous and mysterious stranger steps off a bus in a town that time forgot.

That’s exactly what happened to Kate Bell. Brought up in Winter, she has escaped her loving but over protective parent’s clutches by going to college only to return for a visit and to fall in love with a stranger.

Ben Parker arrives in Winter sporting his dark blue eye and chiselled looks and Kate is immediately swept away. Full of intrigue, Ben is protective of his secret and realising he has made a mistake coming to Winter after all tries to leave but Kate has other plans for him and his body!

After persuading Ben to stay for one night to undertake some renovations to her best friend, Jane’s grandmother’s dilapidated house, Kate sets about capturing his heart in attempt to make him stay longer, with her.

The story develops and mysteries are unfurled and when Ben’s secrets become known Kate has to decide whether this is a battle worth the fight.

I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for Jane’s story.

ARC PROVIDED BY NETGALLEY FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

3 OK STARS

Definition:

ruined past participle, past tense of ru·in (Verb)
Verb
1.Reduce (a building or place) to a state of decay, collapse, or disintegration: "a ruined castle".
2.Cause great and usually irreparable damage or harm to; have a disastrous effect on: "a noisy freeway has ruined village life".

I am giving the cover of this book 5 HOTT STARS because straight up I wanna lick the cover model's chest... from abs to throat... yes 5 bloody HOTT stars for the cover!!!!

The book to me was predictable, I knew from the moment Ben walked into that " ruined castle" that he had something to do with it and funny enough he rose from his "ruined" state as well from being there

I will give that this book had its share of angst and sweet and the end just worked out for each of the characters

I do look forward to reading Jane's book, cause something about her makes me want to read it

This book was short but excellent written, the story was perfect had me hooked from page one. I fell in love with all the characters from the beginning . This story it gave me butterflies, made me cry, it was really everything I love about books. A suspense young man with secrets with a sad story. The end is perfect. If you are looking for a hot, short, suspense novel well this is it. I loved it. I can't wait to read Jane's story in book 2.

I got a copy in exchange for an honest review

After participating in the cover reveal for this book I wanted to read it, so when I noticed it on Netgalley I didn't hesitate and requested it. This book was different than I expected, but it was really well written and the story was so intriguing.

Ruin is about a small town called Winter, winter is such a boring town and there isn't really anything left there. At first we see Winter through Kate her eyes and even I felt the need to escape from this small and stiffling village. It was almost creepy how well the author described the village. Then ofcourse there happens something unexpected a stranger enters winter. From that moment on I started speculating about why he was there and it's only at the end of the book that we found out and all my quesses where horribly wrong. There is a lot mystery and even a bit danger and romance. The stranger called Ben, makes the reader see another side of Winter. The book is written from Kate her perspective, but when she talks with Ben I could suddenly see how beautifull Winter could be.

I really liked the author her writing style, I really felt like I was there in Winter and while the story is a bit short, it's not rushed. The pace is perfect and the ending was great too. The ending wraps up the story of Kate and Ben, while leaving room open for more stories to take place in Winter. And I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I liked Kate, although sometimes I was a bit surprised at how she reacted. She get's angry at her parents once and I flinched when I heard what she said to them. At first I wasn't sure what to think of Ben, he was a stranger and he never told them his reason for being there, while Kate trusted him almost immediately I thought she was a bit quick to trust him, because he was suspicious. I wasn't sure what to think of Jane and am curious to leanr more about her in the next book, because in this book she came across as a bit weak and not really having a mind or dreams of her own. I really liked Jane her grandma, Mrs M. She was a grumpy old lady, but for some reasn all the exchanges with her where funny and she was still really perspective despite her old age.

There also is some romance in this book, but I felt that it clashed a bit with the rest of the story sometimes. The relationship develops a bit fast and Kate keeps saying Ben is a good person, while she hardly knows him. I also couldn't get a really good feel of both characters and maybe that's why I didn't really feel the romance.

To conclude: I enjoyed Winter, it's a bit short, but the pace is right. I really liked the smal town setting and the mystery. I found it a bit difficult to connect with some characters and I didn't really feel the romance. The ending wrap this storyline up nicely, while making me look forward to the next book in this series. I like the authors writing style and it fits the story perfectly.

Review by Natalie

Kathryn Bell better know as Kate is a college student, attending The University of Maryland studying criminology.

She's originally from Winter, Montana and visiting her family and friends there on summer break. Winter has long

lost its life, after the saw mills closed down and most moved away in search of work or schooling like she did.

Coming back is bitter sweet because she should be enjoying her summer break instead of sitting in this desolate town.

While she is hanging out with her friend, Jane Merriweather at the Winter Warmer Diner a tall, dark, and handsome

man enters. Needless to say he isn’t from around here and no one would want to just visit this place. With his duffel

bag on his back and a lot on his mind he takes a seat after locking eyes with Kate. She felt like he was seeing

into her not at her.

Jane and Kate finish up their visit and begin to leave. As Kate turns around, she almost plows right into the sexy

stranger. Kate introduces herself and he says his name is “Ben”. Then Kate introduces their waitress, Molly and her

friend Jane. Ben mentions hes not staying and is going to get on the next bus out of town. Knowing there isn’t another

bus until tomorrow Kate suggests Jane employ him at her grandmothers for the night. Being Mrs. M Janes' Gran has

one of the biggest houses in town there is always work to be done and it would keep Mr. Sexy in town one more day.

Although he declines many offers by Kate and Jane he leaves and waits at the bus stop. Realizing there isn’t another

bus til tomorrow, he returns to the diner and asks Jane if her offer still stands. They make it over to Kates' where

Janes' car is and Kate says she's going to stay as well. She says it's so Jane isn't alone with a stranger but Jane

knows better than that. Kate runs inside to grab some things and they all head over to Mrs. M's house.

Later she shows Ben where the tools are in the stables. While they were in there Ben wanted to show her some of the

amazing things that were in there. He reaches out his hand to help her around the cob webs and she feels a tingling

run up her arm as their hands touch. Locking eyes once again and she hopes he'll kiss her. Ben backs up and puts

distance between them because he doesn’t know her and she doesn’t know him or his past. He believes shes too good for

him and he just needs to get through today and leave tomorrow. Or will he? Can she change his mind? Will his past

change everything?

I give this book a solid 4.5 stars and not 5 only because it was so short but it was a quick, great read. There is murder,

sadness, deceit, and love in this book. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down. The characters are very believable

for a small town and I am excited to read the next book.

Review for Ruin (A Summer in Winter Novel #1) by CJ Scott

I am seriously torn about this review. I finished this book a few days ago and I have to be honest here, I’m still completely undecided on how I feel. So, here I am writing a review and I don’t really know where it’s going to go… probably into ruin. (See what I did there? Ruin, ruin. Oh, shut up you smiled at my idiocy.) The main thought that is running through my head is ‘rushed’. The entire book felt like a sprint to the end. Some stories less is best, but I think in this case it was to the detriment of the characters. I never really felt that they had the chance to be fully developed. At least not in any satisfying way. I give the author mad props for coming up with a plot line that wasn’t just like a million others. It had a bit of mystery and intrigue, but again it just didn’t have a chance to fully get there.

Kathryn Bell is home from college for the summer. She hates Winter, it’s boring, yadda yadda… Her BFF Jane is stuck in Winter because she is the only person who can take care of her grandmother, Mrs. M. (If you haven’t caught on yet, Winter is the town they live in not the season.) Okay, so, in walks tall, dark, handsome stranger Ben Parker. Love or lust at-first-sight for Kate, while I don’t hate these at-first-sight stories, this one for me was a bit much. Add to it that we take Mr. Parker, stranger, possible serial killer, hottie home with our shy BFF Jane just minutes after meeting him and I’m thinking, romance or Texas Chainsaw Massacre Winter Edition?

I don’t want to really get into the story much more than I have already because let’s face it I tell much more and the whole 100 page story is ruined. This story has major potential, don’t get me wrong, it’s worth a read if you are wanting a short story that isn’t all smutty. However, I do think the author did a disservice to herself and her characters by making this a novella length book instead of going for a full-length novel. Had she taken things that one step further it would be an epic story as it is, I was disappointed. I will give the storyline three stars for effort (I really want to go two stars, but the originality of some of the plot details keeps me from doing that.) As far as the smut factor, it’s more angst ridden tension than fulfillment for me so that will have to be two pairs of damp panties. (The couple of full-on sex scenes left me feeling like I did with the rest of the book… rushed and disappointed.)

**4 out of 5**

Read my full review at http://romancereaders101.blogspot.com

I was looking for a short quick read without a lot of issues and this book covered those points well. It's a short book but worth the read. There was more angst than I expected. I'm not a huge fan of instalove but knowing it was short was ok with it. The characters were ok. I liked everyone for the most part. The heroine had a tendency to get on my nerves at points but she was over all easy to like. The hero was tall, dark, and handsome. He brooded a lot and was extremely mysterious. I figured out one of the big secrets pretty fast but didn't really expect the other one. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by Ruin. I would have liked the book to be in both POV's but other than that it was great.

Kate is home from college on summer vacation. She's 21 and has been raised in a small town with very conservative parents. Her father is the police chief as well as the only cop in her hometown. She's seen as a "goody two shoes" but isn't as innocent as others believe. She's average with blonde hair, and a slim figure. She's bored out of her mind, spending time with her best friend who is her direct opposite, and wasting away her days until she can return to school, graduate and get out of town forever.

Ben is tall dark and handsome. He's 24, has blue eyes, dark hair that's on the spiky side. He has the whole mysterious bad boy look about him. He gets off the bus and strolls into town looking for work with a past as dark as the look he wears on his face.

Kate and her best friend Jane are hanging around the only diner in town when Ben walks in. Their eyes meet and there is an instant connection but he isn't planning on staying. She pushes him to stay in town and work for room and board at her friend's rundown house. He politely pushes her away and leaves only to realize that he isn't going anywhere until the following morning. He agrees to stay and do the work for a place to sleep.

There is a connection but he fights it and they get to know each other in a very short period of time. It's almost not believable but the story is really short so I can understand. If you're looking for a HEA we get it but it's quick and the book kind of just stops. There is no epilogue so we don't know what happened between them. I hated that but it was still a good book. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick read. I give it 4 stars because it's a good book and it was exactly what I was looking for.

Kate is spending the summer back in her hometown of Winter. She dreads spending her days in a small, quiet town where nothing changes. Then a stranger enter the town's diner. As mysterious events go, this one is a bug one. No one ever comes to Winter, mostly they just want to leave. So when Ben steps off the bus and into the little town of Winter, Kate can't help but be curious about the handsome, quiet stranger.

As a short read Ruin packs a punch with its interesting characters, romance and overall plot. I enjoyed getting to know Ben, a lot. He was quiet and strong, considerate and passionate. He didn't want to affect Kate with his past and kept his true reason for arriving in Winter a secret. I liked Kate, but not right away. To me, she came across a bit immature, especially when she kept acting like a brat with her parents. Never mind that she kept announcing how 'imperfect' she was to every one. That was unnecessary.

Anyway, as a whole the story was interesting to read. I enjoyed how the author went about bringing Ben's past and his reason for being in Winter to the page. I liked that he hesitated before following his attraction to Kate. It did show a lot about the kind of person he was. I also enjoyed the secondary characters and what they brought to the story. Mrs. M was hilarious and I can't wait to read about Jane. She was kind, shy and a great friend. I wonder what's in store for her.

The 'mystery' of why Ben was in Winter wasn't a surprise, but it was interesting to learn all the other details and the reaction of the characters to the news. I loved learning about Ben's past. C.J. Scott brought with it a lot of emotions that I was surprised to see coming from Ben causing my heart to melt for him even more.

My biggest hurdle to get through with this story was how fast the romance developed. I don't think a couple of weeks, with a week spent apart at that, would be enough time for two people who just met to develop strong feelings for each other. Lust, of course. But not the kind of deep emotions Ben and Kate were professing.

Short and to-the point, with a little mystery and a sweet romance, Ruin is the first book in the Summer in Winter series.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Cover: The cover is hot and caught my attention!
The Characters: Kate - She is strong, rebellious (but not in a bad way) and so very curious. I liked her character and her drive and passion for life.Ben - Is dark, sexy and mysterious. He is a gentleman and kindhearted but has an edge to him.Jane - I thought she was a little old fashioned but she was ok and came about as the story progressed. I wondered how her and Kate were still compatible considering just how different they truly are.
The Story Line: I really liked the story line. It was the same ole "hot guy with a dark past meets girl" but it was different.
The Ending: I liked the ending and look forward to the next book. It tied up lose ends but not all of them.

...When I started this book I wasn't sure what to expect since it seemed to contain so much by the description, yet the book was so short.
It starts off with a bang. You get to know a little about the 2 girls and then the handsome stranger arrives. You don't have to read through pages and pages of back history before the story even starts. I love the way the author describes the surroundings. It truly made me feel like I was in the town and inside the mansion/house. It was amazing the connection she helped me form.As you read you learn a little more bit by bit about the history of the town, the people and Ben. You know and can feel that he has a past and a dark secret that is tied to the town or people or the house or even the Grandmother, yet you don't know what it is and really want to find out. I enjoyed the way his story came out and how it was dealt with. It was a twist and I did't see that coming.
I love the way Gran seemed to warm up towards the end but not too much. Just enough to not ruin her character but show she has a heart. Nothing seemed rushed in this short book and it was well written.
I really enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. It wasn't a super huge suspenseful novel but it did the trick and was a fast little read. There were some nice love scenes, not your hot sexual erotic ones but nice and simple.

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a little romance mixed with intrigue and mystery. I know it won't meet everyone's taste but I really enjoyed it.

Firstly I have to say it's the cover that draws you to this book. It's an excellently presented piece of artwork for sure. Hot dude, the house gives an idea of connection. The black and white photography with the colourful title is very visually stimulating altogether; yes I would say this book cover is certainly enticing indeed.

This story is short and a quick read. Because of that though I found the plot rushed and hard to fully sink into.

I also really struggled to connect with the heroine; Kate. On the one hand she was portrayed as kind and helpful but what alienated her to me was how she spoke and interacted with her parents. I am a parent, my oldest a teenager, how Kate spoke to her parents was just like a stroppy teenager who felt everything was unfair towards them, this to me is not the actions of a 21 year old. So I found her behaviour quite juvenile and hard to warm too. But when she was being thoughtful like when she purchased food for Jane and Mrs M. this was a side of her I liked and could interact with.

Ben was the saviour in my eyes, he is a likeable man. Kind, caring and thoughtful. He was troubled though and you could guess what the connection was in the story from very early on. What I found slightly strange was the role reversal of Ben being the good, sensible and almost virginal character and Kate being the promiscuous, drug experimenting, drunken one. This again did little to warm me to her, I don't like reading girls/women portrayed in the light that Kate was, don't get me wrong I don't like meek and doormat heroines either, I just don't like immature, self centered, slightly selfish characters as in how Kate came across to me.

So all in all this is an OK read, it's quick and I feel perhaps too quick. I would have liked to get to know the characters more and the plot to have been building with the mystery surrounding why Ben says he can't be with Kate. It was too condensed in my eyes and left you little time to get to know them fully, but that's just how I feel. Some of it felt unbelievable and I don't feel the plot was suspenseful enough, it was easy to work it all out before the reveal. Will I read the next book about Jane, in truth I am really not sure, I am certainly not drawn to adding it to be 'to read' pile.

There was a bunch of things I liked about the story and some I didn't like so much. I liked the overall concept and mystery of the story. It was intriguing and new. It drew me in from the start and held my attention until the very end. It was very short, I wish some things would of been longer. Like the relationship with Kate and Ben. I felt a sexual connection with them, but nothing more. I wanted more. Jane was really sweet and I see she has a book of her own. I will probably read that! I hope more Ben and Kate will be in there. The ending was good, but I needed more. If there is no more I wanted where their lives went, what did Kate decide to do. Stay or go? did they continue their relationship? I just needed more. It was overly good but I felt it lacked in many areas. The writing was good and it was mysterious and had an interesting story line. And some didn't feel very realistic, even in a small town. Who would let a complete stranger live with them just for room and board? I wouldn't. I get it's fiction and makes the story. But I felt it could of maybe been handled a better way.
Kate was home on a summer vacation and she is hanging out with her friend Jane when a stranger catches their eye. They get to talking and they realize he needs a place to stay and a job. There are no jobs in Winter so Jane and Kate offer up room and board in exchange for fixing up her grandmothers house. But Ben has secrets and Mrs. M see's right through those secrets. Kate and Ben get real close and he tries to push her away for her own safety. Then Ben is arrested and all the little lies and secrets come to light. Will Ben be free again? will his past haunt him forever? and can he and Kate ever have a chance at a future? you will have to read to find out. It was a good, short read. And for free, why not! it wasn't amazing, it lacked in some areas, but I enjoyed it and I will give Jane's story a chance and maybe anything else from this author :-)

Interesting word, ruin. It has so many definitions. But what is ruined to one person is only slightly damaged by another. Yet, a third person will not see it has damaged or ruined. And sometimes a little tender loving care is all that’s needed to make it seem like new again, like it has a second chance.

Ruin by C.J. Scott is all about second chances. It reminds us to see people for what they are now and not what they were in the past. It also reminds us that we all need someone in our lives to love us, keep us, and help us along in life.

Ben Parker comes to town looking for something. He won’t tell what he’s looking for, but he’s definitely looking. Otherwise, why would he have ever gotten off the buss in Winter, Montana?

Kate Bell can’t wait to escape Winter. But once Ben shows up, she’s not so eager to leave anymore.

This was an interesting story. Kate is the town cop’s daughter and the “good girl”. She falls for the new boy in town who’s also hiding secrets. Kate gave Ben something he wasn’t expecting, a second chance. However, Ben felt he wasn’t any good and kept pushing Kate away.

Kate wasn’t perfect. Not by a long shot. But she was a good person and was willing to see the good in others. Her parents are over-protective and mean well. Jane, Kate’s friend, is shy and sweet. She needs some excitement in her life! Then, there’s Mrs. M., Jane’s grandmother. She’s old, crotchety, and set in her ways, but overall, not a bad person.

This short story packs a lot of drama and punch into its pages. I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series. But all looks, Winter, Montana is a sleepy little town but I have a feeling things are going to get lively there!

I was not overly impressed with this book, unfortunately. I give the author props for coming up with a plotline that was actually kind of interesting and cool; a little bit reminiscent of the style of Kate Morton and Sarah Jio. But the fact that this book is only novella size (at 100 pages) makes it hard to develop the background necessary to pull off that kind of "OMG" moment at the end of the book. I barely felt like I'd met the characters, and was not nearly comfortable enough with the story for the plot twist to feel authentic.

The writing wasn't actually all that bad. This book definitely had potential to become something awesome. I can see it now — "a debut new adult novel from author C.J. Scott that revolves a deep-seated family secret that threatens to expose these secretive characters living in a small town." I would totally read that book. And I think that there is a place for it in the market. But Ruin is merely a first-draft attempt at what could potentially have been an explosive hit.

Their were some other problems, though. The characters were one-dimensional, and there was no tangible chemistry between the two main characters. This was another case of insta-love that totally didn't work. And I have to admit that I only skimmed the (two) sex scenes, because they weren't hot or anything special.

I do feel that this book could've been great if the author had spent a little more time on it. I liked the dynamic between Kate and her parents, as well as the dynamic between Jane and her grandmother. And the dialogue was written decently. So, while there are a few things that I would change and I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book "as is" to somebody, I think that it has massive potential if those three things were worked on — the length of the book, character development, and romance.

Ruin was an unexpected surprise. This was one of those times that I should not have judged the book by its cover. I overlooked this book for a year because the cover did not draw me in. I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it.
It began with mystery and desire with the new visitor in Winters. Ben stopped in the town of Winters looking for work. He not only acquired work but a companion as well. Kate having grown up in Winters could not wait to leave until Ben arrived. It was an insta connection, but it worked.

Kate grew up in Winter. Winter was once a bustling town with two mills. When Jane's parents passed away she was left in the care of her grandmother. Jane was now her caregiver. Kate could not wait to leave Winters. Every summer she dreaded returning to visit family and friends. However, upon her third summer return, a new visitor changed her outlook in Winters. "For showing me how pretty this place is. I've been coming here for years, looking at that river from this very spot, but I've never really seen it." Excerpt from story when Kate is looking at the river through new eyes.

Ben had his perception of Kate that her family life and upbringing was perfect because it's what he wanted for himself.
Kate felt smothered by her parents and the town. The Bell family name had a reputation for being good perfect people which Kate did not want to be identified by. Kate wanted to create her own identity and define herself not by her given name but by her own choices.
Ben and the town of Winters held secrets. Mrs. Merriweather was one of few people left in the town who knew about the secrets.
It was a short and quick read with an emotional story that developed the characters enough to allow a connection.

I actually really liked this. It wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed reading it. Once I started, I read it straight through.

The worst thing about the book was it flirted with the line of way to sappy. It was really close. I did find myself giggling occasionally.

Also, I wanted it to be longer. However, that isn't really a complaint so much as a compliment.

I'd score the writing at a 3/5. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular either. Some of the dialogue didn't feel real, but most of it was good. The story was engaging and had good pacing as well.

I have 2 specific nitpicks:

1. She feels the need to justify just how not slutty or slutty she is. I would really prefer a MC who owns their sexuality and doesn't feel the need to justify herself.

2.

I really really loved the chemistry between Kate and Ben. I really felt it and was engaged by it. Ben was seriously hot. Kate was fairly likable as well. I really loved the old lady.

This was definitely a solid debut for the author, and I can't wait to read more by her.

The town of Winter has dwindled down to just the locals. Once a bustling place when the mill was open, times have changed and the town has lost it’s quaint charm. As the daughter of the sheriff, Kate Bell wanted more out of life than being stuck in a town with no visible future. She attends college in Maryland, far away from her home in Montana. During her summer breaks, Kate comes home to visit her family.

Visits home are always boring for Kate. There is never anything ’fun’ to do. For once, she would love to have things shaken up in town. Then Ben Parker comes strolling into Winter……….

This handsome hunk wanders into town looking for work. Kate is instantly smitten with the stranger. Kate convinces Ben to stay in town to work on her friend Jane Merriweather’s home that is in disrepair. Despite warning Kate to ’stay away’, Ben finds her compelling and hard to resist.

There is more to Ben than meets the eye. Secrets are revealed and threaten to break Kate’s heart in two. Those revelations expose secrets that involve the town of Winter and threaten to ruin Ben. Kate must face the realization that Ben may not be the person she believes he is…..or is he?

Ruin was a great short story. I loved the characters and the plot. This short and sweet romance packed a punch, drawing readers into Ben’s story. Typically, I am not a fan of ‘short stories’…they always seem to leave you with questions or unsaid events. This is not the case for Ruin! I look forward to reading more in this series!

* I was given a copy of this book from the author via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review*

Kate Bell can't believe she's back in winter for her summer vacation. While other parents are going to the beach with their college student children, she's stuck in the most boring town that is slowly dying before her eyes. This is going to be a summer like every other one, spending time with her friend Jane who is taking care of her grandmother, spending time with her parents who have no variation in their weekly schedules, that is until Ben Parker comes drifting into town. He's secretive, sexy and mysterious, all traits Kate can't resist. But when she finds out the truth, will their feelings for each other be enough?

I loved this book. There was emotion, drama, feel good moments, and mystery. What a great group of characters! Kate was slightly immature but just in a typical college student kind of way, and I loved watching her mature with her experiences. Ben was wise beyond his years, but broken, and I wanted to reach through the pages and make things better for him. The mystery of Ben's secrets and how the town of Winter tied into everything kept the story fast paced if not a little rushed, and you glued to the pages. I would have loved for it to be longer so the pace could have been spread out a little better, and gotten more detailed but I still loved the story that C.J. Scott wound.

Kate Bell is home from college. She's happy to reunite with her best friend Jane, who is living in twon and taking care of her sick grandmother. Kate is expecting along, boring summer at her parents' house. But them Ben Parker arrives. He's dark and mysterious, and looking for a job. Jane offers him to stay at her grandmother's house in order to fix it for food and board. Ben and Kate share an immediate attraction, but he keeps pushing her away. And Ben's past is catching up with him, threatening his future.

Looking at the cover for this book, I was expecting it to be about angels. I'm not sure why, as it was stated on the blurb that it is contemporary romance (not paranormal). Yet, I kept thinking that the guy on the cover only needs a pair of wings to be an angel. When wondering about Ben's secret, I fleetingly considered the possibility that he might be an angel. But no, of course. No angels in this book.

Ruin is the first in a series of novellas. It was good, but I think it could have been better if if had been a regular novel - at least 60 pages longer. The attraction between Kate and Ben felt rushed - insta-love at the nth degree. There's a secret in Ben's past, but I was able to guess at least half of it - it was kind of obvious to me. Considering the short lenght of the book, things get resolved pretty fast, too.

The next novella in the series is about Jane. I'm going to read it, as I find her a very interesting character - much more so than Kate.
