The Deception of Devin Miller

Rate this book
One month ago, seventeen year old Devin Miller wrecked while intoxicated— or so she’s told by the sightly ticked off blue-eyed boy when she wakes up from a coma. The only thing Devin remembers is the darkness holding her down and the voices-- some happy, some upset, and one very agitated. She can't remember her name, her age, where she lives, or who in the world the blue-eyed boy is. But he knows her and against her better judgment, she offers to pay him for his memories so she can trick the ones closest to her into thinking she's fine.

That is her first mistake.

When Devin gets home, the deception is harder than she thought. People she doesn't know keep talking to her. Trey (the blue-eyed boy) doesn't show up like he said he would. And the police want to talk to her about her involvement with the car accident. Plus she keeps seeing flashes of the wreck, but none of them make sense. What would a red plastic cup have to do with anything? And why can't she seem to trust the people she is supposed to trust the most?

Facing DUI charges for a wreck she can't recall, Devin fights to remember exactly what happened the night of the something the real driver desperately wants her to forget permanently.

Who is really doing the deceiving?

Kelly Martin is an author and developmental editor who lives in a possibly haunted house in a small southern town. While she'd like to say paranormal things only happen to her at her home, it would be a lie, mainly because she searches them out in some of America's most haunted locations. Whether it is talking to the ghosts of Waverly Hills or the spirits of Thomas House Hotel, these events inevitably land in some of Kelly's books. Just wait until you read The Haunting of Micah Reed.

What would you do if you woke up in hospital and didn't know how you got there?
How do you trust people you don't remember?

Devin Miller is 17 years old,a rich, popular girl or that's who she was..
When Devin wakes up in the hospital and cant remember who she is,things go from bad to worse.
She finds out by a slightly annoyed blue eyed boy that she has just come out of a coma and she had crashed her car whilst intoxicated..

Devin cant remember her parents, or all her so called friends..she cant even remember her name..
But she doesn't want anyone to know that she has amnesia..

What if they lie to her? Trick her into believing things that aren't true about herself?

She decides to ask blue eyed boy, Trey to help her act like she remembers everything..
Paying Trey for her memories seemed like a good idea at the time but when she returns home and there is a party for her, all she wants to do is go to her bedroom and sleep..
But where is her bedroom?
And where the hell is Trey?

As days go by Devin keeps getting flashbacks of the accident but it doesn't seem to connect with what she has been told..
What really happened? Was she really that reckless to drink and drive? Or was there more to it?

Who is really doing the deceiving?

This was a quick, fast-paced read, I was hooked right from the start and loved all the twists and turns in the story.
Everyone was keeping secrets and each secret was destroying lives..

I liked Trey he was funny and always there when things went wrong but I wanted to know more about him! I wanted the story to carry on..maybe a series? :D
I really enjoyed all the suspense and trying to figure out what happened, it was like a puzzle, putting all the pieces together!
Great job Kelly Martin!

Devin wakes up from her coma with amnesia but she doesn't want anyone to know. When she wakes up, there's a boy in her room and as she talks to him, he doesn't seem to like her and she has no idea why not. She offers to pay him to help her with her memories and not to tell anyone about her amnesia. He agrees. Her parents and boyfriend come to see her and they don't seem to like the boy, either. Why not? What's going on? Will she ever remember? Who should she trust to tell her the truth?

This book is full of Drama (yes, with a capital D). I love the writing style--information is released in small doses so it makes every conversation interesting but there are still enough questions to keep me reading to get more answers. There are lots of secrets and Devin is in the middle of everything; she just doesn't remember what's going on. Her conversations with Trey (the boy from the hospital that she pays to help her) are funny and I enjoyed their exchanges.

Her life is fine as long as she doesn't remember what happened, but once she starts remembering, someone isn't happy about it and wants her to stick to the story.

Content: There is underage drinking and her father has a huge secret that I guessed early on (but hoped I was wrong) and when it came out, made me cringe.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review

Mystery, lies, intrigue, suspense, this book has it all and more. Devin Miller is a mean girl, or is she? According to Trey she is, she doesn't actually know if anything he tells her is true or not but going with her gut and not having any other choices she decides to trust him. She wakes up in hospital with absolutely no memories, she doesn't know how she got there or even who she is. This is hard book to review without spoilers, I will say that when you start reading it make sure you have a few free hours in which to do it. This book sucks you in almost immediately and doesn't let go until the very last page. The characters are portrayed really well, they each in their own way play a pivotal role in the events of the story. There are several secrets woven into this story, its not just a book about a girl with amnesia but also a book about secrets, of which there are several. The story flows at a great pace, I never felt like there was a need for things to speed up, at the same time the story never got confusing even though there really is a lot going on. After leaving the hospital Devin starts to get flashbacks but none that make sense, its all in small pieces with nothing she can actually piece together to make a whole, its through these flashbacks that we start to learn more about not only the accident but also parts of Devins life from before. As for why the story is called the Deception of Devin Miller, my best advice would be to read it and find out for yourself, you won't be disappointed. For anyone who is a fan of suspense and mystery this is a must read, even if this book is not something you thing you'd normally read its worth trying, you might be pleasantly surprised :)

BEWARE: Once you start this book you will not be able to stop!!! Seriously!!! This book is amazing and I was hooked right from the start. A seventeen year old girl wakes up in the hospital and she has no clue who she is! And super hot volunteer guy is right there when she wakes up, looking at her kinda broodingly. Who is he? For goodness sake she doesn't even know who she is! From there you are taken on a whirlwind ride while Devin tries to put together the pieces of who she was and decide who she wants to be. Add into that the whole mystery behind the car accident, the strange way her boyfriend, best friend and father are acting, and yeah, can we say DRAMA? A fantastic read that will have you flying through the pages, The Deception of Devin Miller is one awesome book! Romance, mystery, intrigue, hot guy, rich girl who can't remember who she is....I could go on and on....but I won't! Read it for yourself!!!

I received a copy of this book for free, this is my honest review.

Kelly Martin has done it again! Blown me away with another YA story. You are pulled right into Devin's story from the first page. She opens her eyes and can't remember a thing. Who do you trust? Can you even trust your self when you get flashes? I can't even imagine the couple of months that this family has had, and what the future holds for them as well. The pieces of the puzzle slowly came out and showed a much bigger picture than just an accident.

Kelly did an awesome job developing each character's relationship with Devin. Each character had their own story within the story to make you like them or dislike them. The plot held mystery, suspense, action, DRAMA at its finest, and even romance. What is not to love??

I really enjoyed this book. Being thrust into the story from Devin's perspective gives the reader a really great idea of how she feels - you don't know who to trust, you don't know what happened, and you had no idea that her life was so complicated. At first it seems fairly simple, but then you learn that's not the case at all. Yet even while I was reading about the drama, I wasn't overwhelmed by it. Sometimes I read books that seem overly dramatic and never give the reader a chance to take it all in, but this author did a nice job of pacing the events so that the book is never boring and also not too overwhelming.

This is definitely a book that I will be re-reading, and I'll be on the lookout for more to read by Kelly Martin :)

I, too, was given an advanced copy. I really enjoyed the book and trying to figure out what was true and what was not. Devin Miller is quite an interesting person to read about. You get caught up in the story as if you are there with her watching what is going on first hand. When you try to make a guess on who did what, you usually are not correct.

Being a crime author myself, I was intrigued with how Ms Martin wove the tale around a first person POV.

This is an excellent book and you really need to read it. You will be immersed in it as I was.

Thanks for the chance to read it in advance.

Another true gem by Kelly Martin! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from her, and feel truly blessed to get to read this book early. Great suspense and character development. I read it all in one setting, as it was too good to put down. Kelly does a great job of making you really care about Devin and her memories. Who can Devin trust to tell her the truth? The twists and turns in the plot have you sitting on the edge of your seat, just like when you are watching a scary movie. Put this one on your to-read shelf and download it as soon as it is available. You don't want to miss it!

Not wanting anyone to know about her memory lose, Devin begs Trey for help to which he finally agree's. When she learns she is being charged with drink driving following the accident. Devin fights to learn the truth but could it end up costing her life

Lots of mystery and plenty of action. This novel is about a girl with amnesia who is rediscovering herself while the rest of her life falls apart around her. She learns that she had not been the nicest person but had been changing prior to the accident that led to the amnesia. And some people were threatened by this change. Seeing Devin through this drama is Trey, a boy she can't remember but feels connected to. I liked Trey but I feel like his character could have been explored a lot more. While the story was over-the-top at times, it was still very entertaining.

This was a great story. It kept me entertained for a few hours and I finished the book in one sitting.

The story moved along at a good pace from beginning to end and kept me needing to find out more as the story went on.

It was a nice feeling being able to escape into the world that Kelly Martin has created with these interesting characters.

I look forward to reading more from the imagination of Kelly Martin.

I was given a arc copy of this book. It is a written very well. It keeps you guessing who the guilty party is. She wonders about all of her friends and how they are acting since her wreck. It is woven together very well with a great ending. Kelly you have written a book that i couldn't put down from finish to start. GREAT JOB!

I received an ARC of this book and it was well worth the time to read. It was such an awesome story that I didn't want to put it down, because you wanted to see what was around the next corner. There was so much the poor girl had to deal with that are common teenage issues and might even help get people through their life a little easier.
