Classic Ghost Stories: Tales of horror, mystery and the supernatural is a creepy collection of tales from beyond the grave, ideal for readers of all ages. Notes on the authors and ghoulish illustrations provide a powerful introduction to some of the most fiendish characters in literature. There are 4 sections: - From the Grave - Haunted - Cursed Creatues - The Doomed and the Dead Stories included under each title are classics adapted for young readers. A few examples: The Body Snatchers by Robert Louis Stevenson, A Bottomless Grave by Ambrose Bierce, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Signal-Man by Charles Dickens and more. Color illustrations throughout. This book is aimed at middle school students who are good readers, or early high school readers.
I’m not sure how Classic Ghost Stories by Belinda Gallagher found it’s way into my collection but it was a pretty decent collection of traditional “horror” stories. It’s intended for younger audiences and provides a spooky yet interesting introduction into famous myths and legends 🧛♂️ While I was familiar with the classics such as Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula, I was happy to learn about new folklore such as the Legend of Don Munio Sancho de Hinojosa and the Kropfsberg Keep. The book is easily laid out by section and features some vividly captivating graphics that are perfect for all ages. Classic Ghost Stories is a great gift for kids who are not afraid of creepy stories that leave chills down their spine and love a good scare 👻
Good choice if you want a sampling of different older classical ghost stories. Not too scary, and easy to read. Quick read too, aimed at a pre-teen reader in my opinion. Nice thing is there are full short stories as well as extracts from longer stories. I had read many of them, but got enough of the ones that I haven't read yet to still want to read them and find out the whole story.
If this book is meant to be for children, they are going to have a difficult time reading this book. The vocabulary for juveniles with this book is tooo advanced.

I'd have loved this as a kid, it's brightly illustrated and colorful, though some younger readers-the book's intended audience-might find the images or at least some of them, a little scary or creepy. But this is a great introduction to the horror genre, with some well-known classics and others were less well-known, at least to me. All in all, I enjoyed taking my time with this one this year, I sort of skipped around and I do have my favorites, but I won't list them here, it would take entirely too long. And I have a few that I plan on re-reading before I actually put it away on my shelf.
First published in 2010, 'Classic Ghost Stories' is a collection of 35 short stories and extracts from novels, all originally published between the mid-19th century and the early 20th century. Aimed mainly at the younger reader as an introduction to the genre, this works well. On the other hand, if you have read a lot of this genre then you may have come across much of the contents already. That said, the selection is great, with several real gems.
A wide range of gems from many masters of classical horror, gothic fiction and ghost stories.
Includes stories by Robert Louis Stevenson, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, M R James, Gertrude Atherton, Ambrose Bierce, Oscar Wilde, J Sheridan Le Fanu, Emily Brontë, Charles Dickens, Frank Norris, J K Bangs, Fitz-James O'Brien, Mary Shelley, E and H Heron, Bram Stoker, E Nesbit, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Henry James, Ralph A Cram, Mary E Wilkins Freeman, and Amelia B Edwards.
It was fine. I keep reading short story collections even though I don't really like short stories, so that's on me. The extracts were weirdly...well, EXTRACTED. Just chopped out of longer novels willy-nilly. My favorite story in the collection was "The Bottomless Grave ". The cover and artwork are beautiful, though.
Loved the many different stories. This book was a gem I found in a Cracker Barrel gift store on the way out. My family loved them as well, read a few aloud to them. Most probably going to be a common thing around Halloween from here on out.
I LOVED this book of Classic Ghost Stories! Was such a great way to get ready for Halloween. Even though I have read much of these stories before I can never get enough of them 4.5 stars.
It was sometimes hard to follow a story, I know that the purpose of this book is to introduce some horror authors but to me the "extract" stories were boring or too short.
The variety of stories is outsanding. Some I had read in school but he excerpts made me want to read the complete story again. You really need to read these with all the lights on.
