This 2002 collection of short stories by noted Mexican author Antonio Sarabia is another Spanish language treasure I found on the tables of the regular book fairs when I lived in Mexico.

I am SO glad I bought it! Of the seven stories here, there was only one that did not hold my attention, and that (oddly enough) was the title story. It concerned a Spanish poet of the 1600's. He is on his death bed, thinking about his life and the way he used to write satiric versions of poems written by another court poet. To put it bluntly this was a dull story for me and I didn't finish it.

But the others! WOW! There was a pirate tale that surely had a surprise ending for everyone concerned, especially me. Another about a woman who falls in intellectual lust with the pizza delivery guy because he understood where she got the name she gave her cat. But was he really the Romantic Hero she thought he was?

Another story told of two children left alone in the family house when their parents died. They continued their lives more or less in the same manner, except for the geography game they begin to play using a globe of the earth and their imaginations. They write letters to places all over the world, using the names of long-dead ancestors from the family graveyard. What do you think happens when they begin to get replies to these letters?!

I was super impressed by this author so (of course) will be looking for more of his titles. And I will never forget the characters in these stories. Niguas most of all. His story made me cry.
