Este libro recoge los sugestivos y esclarecedores escritos de Kafka publicados en vida del autor: tanto los libros de prosas y narraciones —a excepción de La transformación—, como escritos de otra factura publicados solo en revistas y periódicos. Contemplación (1913), En la colonia penitenciaria (1919) o Un artista del hambre (1924) muestran, tanto o más si cabe que sus novelas, el universo personal del autor y esa manera de narrar por la que ha sido considerado como el autor más emblemático del siglo XX.

O colecție de povestiri scurte și nuvele, printre care și "Metamorfoza", care este de departe cea mai interesantă și importantă nuvelă din acest volum.
"Metamorfoza" are unul din cele mai faimoase începuturi ale literaturii: ”Într-o bună dimineață, când Gregor Samsa se trezi în patul lui, după o noapte de vise zbuciumate, se pomeni metamorfozat într-o gânganie înspăimântătoare…”.
Fantasticul deja se poate simți, iar transformarea este una înspăimântătoare dacă am fi fost în pielea lui Gregor.
Metamorfoza lasă loc numeroaselor interpretări:
- una din ele ar fi că aceasta nuvela îl oglindește chiar pe Frank Kafka, el simțidu-se întotdeauna izolat față de cei din jur.
- o altă interpretare este aceea că oricine dintre noi poate fi Gregor Samsa, fiindcă atât viața cât și societatea ne conduc la aceste stări tragice de anxietate, izolare și alienare. Pentru Kafka, protagonistul este un alt gândac scârbos, inutil si înspăimântător care trebuie să moară, absența lui fiind mult mai benefică celor din jur. Metamorfoza este de fapt rezultatul barierei psihologice dintre Gregor și restul lumii, iar corpul de insectă nu reprezintă decat o închisoare, mintea lui rămânând aceeași.
Din punctul meu de vedere, nuvela "Metamorfoza" este una dintre cele mai bune nuvele din literatura universală. Chiar dacă este o lectură scurtă, influențează enorm orice cititor, lăsându-l să își interpreteze propria viață.

Dintre opera antumă a lui Kafka, până acum citisem doar cărticica apărută la Polirom în traducerea lui Mihai Isbășescu intitulată “Metamorfoza și alte povestiri” dintre care povestirile “cele mai importante” se află-n aceasta. Ei bine, în această ediție de la Humanitas în traducerea lui Mircea Ivănescu (cuprinzând întreaga operă antumă a lui Kafka) nu doar că am dat un refresh (mereu bine venit) povestirilor deja citite în cărticica de la Polirom, dar, evident, am dat și de alte texte plus-minus scurte care au fost de-a dreptul năucitoare, în sensul bun, bineînțeles, cum numai o operă fundamentală poate fi. Acest fapt este îndatorat, mai ales, traducătorului, poate la fel de mult pe cât îi este îndatorat lui Kafka. Prin această traducere nu doar că universul kafkian a (re)pătruns în adâncurile ființei mele, dar amprenta pe care a lăsat-o acum e cu mult mai semnificativă. Până la urmă, adevărata lectură este recitirea. Recomand acest volum, evident, tuturor celor care doresc să-l descopere sau redescopere pe Kafka în întreaga-i puritate tăios-mângăietoare. Dar și celor care nu au neaparat asta în gând, căci niciodată nu strică (ba chiar este de-a dreptul necesară) înlănțuirea într-un “altceva”.

Libro magnífico que reúne ( si es que se puede) un pequeño retazo del genio de Franz Kafka. Lo enorme de su obra, las innumerables posibles interpretaciones y la desolación ( apropiada y nunca en exceso) de cada palabra es sencillamente envolvente, absorbente y de admirar. Ídolo: gigante, destructivo, constructivo y absoluto. En esta compilación ( maravillosa y llena de notas (afortunadamente no como las notas de Cátedra) que hacen del proceso de lectura algo indescriptible) se reúnen los lamentos de los artistas exitosos y fracasados, los gritos de los individuos contra la monotonía y los que han sido absorbidos por ella. Textos desgarradores como "En La Colonia Penitenciaria", frustrantes como " El Jinete del cubo" o apabullantes como " El Médico Rural" son lectura vital para quien desee comprender la modernidad literaria, para quien ame la literatura o para quien simplemente quiera perderse en las infinitas redes que poseía la mente de Kafka. Una pequeña mención sobre Kafka y su contexto. Escritor hijo de la modernidad, lector de Baudelaire, Poe y Nietzsche; escritor hijo de la revolución industrial y del poderoso desarrollo técnico de finales del XIX Kafka, presenta textos, casi que retratos, de la Modernidad, de los cambios que implementó en la mentalidad del individuo y de la invención de la figura del ciudadano. Magnífico.

Nici nu știu de unde să încep. Culegerea de scrieri (că asta e volumul, până la urmă) cuprinde tot ce a publicat Kafka pe timpul vieții, iar bijuteria coroanei este, după cum îi spune și titlul, Metamorfoza. Și celelalte povești sunt ”la înălțime”, dar parcă sunt prea abrupte, prea scurte, îți ridică așteptările și apoi nu reușesc să ți le satisfacă. Practic, vorbim despre o frumoasă introducere în lumea lui Franz Kafka, cu care mă voi mai întâlni cu plăcere, pentru că pe lista de citit tocmai s-au adăugat America și Procesul.

I read this one a few years ago. While I can't say I remember much of the details of the story, I do remember in which circumstances I read it.
I was on my way home, on the late-evening train coming from my office in Brussels. The train was packed with elated people coming from the yearly LGBTQ-pride-week celebrations. Halfway through the journey, I (and with me a few dozen party-goers) missed the connection with the last train to my hometown. The railroad company had to arrange a nightly busride. All by all, it took untill 3am to arrive home.
I read The Metamorphosis in that strange atmosphere. And the story itself was not less surreal. An enjoyable story that made me want to keep reading. Sometimes you just don't know to either laugh or cry.
I still thank the railway company for messing up that night, so I could read the whole story in one session.

LA PUERTA A LA DESESPERACIÓN
En la obra de Kafka aparecen dos conceptos fundamentales: la culpa y la búsqueda de la redención, y a la culpa se vincula todo este relato. La culpa se refleja en el ansia de ser admitidos para limpiar o purgar un pecado que nos apabulla, en este caso presentarnos ante una Ley que nos redima. Y ser admitidos implica realizar una petición, una súplica. La redención llegará al ser aceptados en el seno de las leyes humanas y liberarnos así de nuestras cargas. El sujeto en el mundo kafkiano encara las dolorosas realidades desde la súplica, hallando siempre la negativa y la imposibilidad de conseguir aquello por lo que suplica (alcanzar un castillo, la explicación ante un juicio absurdo, el acceso ante la Ley). Exactamente esto sucede en la parábola. El campesino juzga que la Ley debería ser accesible para todos, pero no lo es para él, ni atiende a sus súplicas. La Ley, por medio de uno de sus empleados, se le niega. La Ley aparece como una sucesión de guardianes de aspecto temible, de obstáculos ante los que el campesino no puede responder sino con la resignación y la espera. El campesino es algo insignificante frente al Derecho. Sus culpas no son expiables. Al menos de momento.
Scholem realiza una interpretación mística de esta escena en su obra En la Kabbalah y su Simbolismo. Según él, puede insertarse toda la parábola en la tradición cabalística: La Torah vuelve una cara especial a cada uno de los judíos, exclusivamente reservada para él y únicamente aprehensible por él, y, por ende, un judío sólo cumple su verdadero destino cuando llega a ver esa cara, nos dice. Esto se cristaliza en la frase del guardián: Esta puerta era sólo para ti. Esta referencia de Scholem, para mí, es la explicación del texto. La Torah es para cada uno de los judíos, no sólo como libro sagrado, sino como compendio de Leyes que hay que cumplir, adecuadas a la individualidad de cada uno y extensible a todos, seamos o no judíos, seamos o no creyentes: una Ley adecuada para cada persona, una Ley a la que no es fácil acceder, a la que es muy difícil llegar y que sólo se obtiene tras toda una vida dedicada, con empeño, al estudio, forjando las virtudes personales y del espíritu con paciencia y perseveración. El individuo libre tiene que buscar su modo de entrar en la Ley o, enlazándolo con la interpretación rabínica, su modo de ver el rostro que la Torah sólo le vuelve a él.
Pero, además, y aquí nos deslizamos por el terreno de la sobre interpretación, la parábola bien podría responder a la experiencia que el escritor experimentó al entrar en relación con lo diferentes ámbitos del Derecho en la sociedad, del comportamiento de las leyes a través de las instituciones a las que perteneció –no en vano Kafka trabajó en una Aseguradora repleta de pleitos y leguleyos-: el Derecho se manifestaba ante el individuo como algo infranqueable, casi absurdo, que coexistía con una infinidad de trabas. E, incluso, rizando el rizo en la ya mentada sobre interpretación, hay quién piensa que Kafka lo que quiso decir es que todos llevamos una puerta abierta dentro y que sólo necesitamos saber como cruzarla o descubrir cuando será el momento adecuado. De ser así me pregunto: ¿una puerta? De acuerdo, pero… ¿abierta hacia adonde? ¿En qué dirección? Y, sobre todo, ¿qué nos aguarda tras ella?

Ik had De Gedaanteverwisseling ooit gelezen en toen vond ik het vrij saai. Nu niet meer! Het is verbazend grappig! En het schiet op, er is plot! Wat een prachtig portret van een gezin in crisis!
Eigenlijk vind ik horror/scifi zo op zijn mooist: hoe gaan gewone personen om met onverklaarbare, fantastische gebeurtenissen?
Ik vond de Strafkolonie en Het Vonnis ook geweldig en onregelend, jeetje hoe DOET Kafka het? Het is vaker gezegd en ik ben het er mee eens: juist omdat hij zo zakelijk schrijft worden er gebeurtenissen nog fantastischer en vreemder.
Wat een fascinerende, totaal gestoorde werelden beschrijft hij! Ik vind het onweerstaanbaar om er in verzeild te raken.
en Kafka lijkt met zoveel zekerheid te schrijven maar als lezer val ik van de ene in de andere verbazing. Ik voel dat er een enorme samenhang is maar ik kan daar niet bij.
Ik vond trouwens de strafkolonie iets van een Roald Dahl-verhaal weg hebben!
En hier alleen voor mezelf: Dit is mijn interpretatie van de gedaanteverwisseling:
Gregor is de redder van het gezin want zijn vader is failliet geraakt maar dankzij zijn werk, zijn ze niet arm. Als zoon zou hij niet de redeer moeten zijn, dat is de taak van de vader. Dus de natuurlijke orde van het gezin is verstoord.
En hij is trots. Gregor als redder is bijna zijn hele identiteit. Zijn werk en het geld wat hij ermee verdient onze gezin te onderhouden is zijn hele leven. Daarom maakt hij zich ook vooral zorgen over zijn werk wanneer hij wakker wordt als insect.
Maar hij begaat daarmee de zonde van hoogmoed, hij steekt zijn vader naar de kroon. En IK denk dat hij daarom wordt verwond door een appel die maar blijft interen op zijn lichaam.
Maar nu Gregor van het hoogste, de mens, is veranderd in het laagste, een insect, gaat het eigenlijk veel beter met gezin! Vader gaat weer aan het werk, moeder gaat werken, zijn zusje begint zich te ontwikkelen.
Wanneer zijn zusje viool speelt en hij kruipt naar buiten om te luisteren, verpest zijn aanwezigheid ook dat. Dus Gregor is de slechterik in dit verhaal. Want pas als hij uit de weg is kan het gezin weer goed functioneren.
Ik dacht dat Kafka kil en deprimerend zou zijn, maar dat vind ik het helemaal niet. Als portret van een gezin is het heel warm en liefdevol!
En hoewel Gregor is veranderd in een weerzinwekkend monster, blijft zijn gezin wel voor hem zorgen!
Eigenlijk vind ik horror/scifi zo op zijn mooist: hoe gaan gewone personen om met onverklaarbare, fantastische gebeurtenissen?
Ik vond de Strafkolonie en Het Vonnis ook geweldig en onregelend, jeetje hoe DOET Kafka het? Het is vaker gezegd en ik ben het er mee eens: juist omdat hij zo zakelijk schrijft worden er gebeurtenissen nog fantastischer en vreemder.

Gregor is de redder van het gezin want zijn vader is failliet geraakt maar dankzij zijn werk, zijn ze niet arm. Als zoon zou hij niet de redeer moeten zijn, dat is de taak van de vader. Dus de natuurlijke orde van het gezin is verstoord.
En hij is trots. Gregor als redder is bijna zijn hele identiteit. Zijn werk en het geld wat hij ermee verdient onze gezin te onderhouden is zijn hele leven. Daarom maakt hij zich ook vooral zorgen over zijn werk wanneer hij wakker wordt als insect.
Maar hij begaat daarmee de zonde van hoogmoed, hij steekt zijn vader naar de kroon. En IK denk dat hij daarom wordt verwond door een appel die maar blijft interen op zijn lichaam.
Maar nu Gregor van het hoogste, de mens, is veranderd in het laagste, een insect, gaat het eigenlijk veel beter met gezin! Vader gaat weer aan het werk, moeder gaat werken, zijn zusje begint zich te ontwikkelen.
Wanneer zijn zusje viool speelt en hij kruipt naar buiten om te luisteren, verpest zijn aanwezigheid ook dat. Dus Gregor is de slechterik in dit verhaal. Want pas als hij uit de weg is kan het gezin weer goed functioneren.
Ik dacht dat Kafka kil en deprimerend zou zijn, maar dat vind ik het helemaal niet. Als portret van een gezin is het heel warm en liefdevol!
En hoewel Gregor is veranderd in een weerzinwekkend monster, blijft zijn gezin wel voor hem zorgen!

En esta edición encontramos los escritos publicados en vida por Franz Kafka. Desde el primero, Los aeroplanos de Brescia (Diario Bohemia, 1909), una crónica literaria de la exhibición de unos aviadores en Italia; hasta el último, Un artista del hambre (Die Schmiede, 1924), un libro de cuentos editado poco después de la muerte del autor, cuyas revisiones a las pruebas de imprenta fueron hechas por Kafka un par de días antes de morir.
Aquí se reúnen cinco de los seis libros que Kafka entregó a la imprenta: Contemplación (1913), La condena (1913), En la colonia penitenciaria (1919), Un médico rural (1919) y Un artista del hambre (1924). El sexto libro publicado en vida fue La metamorfosis (1915), la cual aparece editada en un tomo aparte de esta misma colección. En el presente volumen además encontramos El fogonero (1913) —primer capítulo de la novela póstuma El desaparecido (1927)— y la compilación de los textos impresos en diarios y revistas. Resulta un privilegio asomarse a estos primeros escritos, pues conocemos un poco más del joven Kafka y la búsqueda del estilo que lo convirtió en un clásico universal. Además de la crónica de los aeroplanos, hay reseñas de libros, artículos sobre revistas literarias, ejercicios y reflexiones contenidas en textos cortos. Todo ello acompañado de notas biográficas e históricas que amplían de forma notable la lectura de cada uno de los pasajes. Tras esta primera etapa vienen las obras maestras: La condena y En la colonia penitenciaria. Aquí entendemos, gracias a las numerosas notas de la edición comentada por Jordi Llovet, que tras quince años de ardua búsqueda (lectura y escritura constantes), Kafka encontró la forma de expresión literaria para los anillados abismos, colmados de humor y horror, de su mundo interior. Sucedió una delirante noche de septiembre de 1912, en la que logró escribir de un tirón La condena, desde las diez de la noche hasta las seis de la mañana.
Tras encontrarse como autor, Kafka escribió la absurda transformación de Gregorio Samsa, el diabólico proceso de Josef K. y el laberíntico vagabundeo del agrimensor por la villa del castillo. Pero también compuso los magníficos relatos de Un médico rural, que también se encuentran en esta edición y examinan, entre otras cosas, la subordinación y el infinito (El viejo folio, Ante la ley y Un mensaje imperial), en la forma de lacónicas pesadillas, como bien dijo Borges. Hay que agregar, sin embargo, que estos cuentos investigan la extrañeza de la condición humana en forma de sátiras hilarantes como Informe para una academia, Chacales y árabes y La preocupación de un padre de familia.

Integrala prozei antume ne introduce într-un univers aflat între grotesc și hilar. Textele înfățișează o realitate halucinantă și haotică.
În "Un artist al foamei" toate faptele și acțiunile excepționale devin banale, iar dorința de perfecționare este fatală, iar "În colonia penitenciară" se definește efortul și complexitatea împlinirii actului creator.

Als Kafka ergens een letter op papier zette, dan moet dat vereeuwigd, dacht men wellicht. Ondanks dat K. zelf liever zag dat niets bewaard zou blijven. Het resulteert in een bundel met prachtige verhalen zoals De stoker, In de strafkolonie, Het vonnis of De wet, maar ook nietszeggende fragmenten. Die eerste maken het de moeite meer dan waard gelukkig!

Niet helemaal gelezen. Gekomen tot aan de gedaanteverwisseling, wat ik niet zijn beste verhaal vind. Ik heb wel zijn schrijfstijl beter leren kennen. Hij is een erg speelse schrijver die soms vrij surrealistische scènes maakt waarin tijd bijvoorbeeld niet de normale orde volgt. Een beetje als een droom blijft hij in bepaalde situaties hangen.

I was a little disappointed after I read America, which I didn’t enjoy much. I’m very excited that I now know the Kafka people are always talking about. There are some absolute gems in here. Metamorphosis is as great as promised, but so are A Country Doctor, The Penal Colony and The Judgent.

Deze specifieke uitgave bevat meermaals spelfouten. Inhoudelijk geweldig; het gevoel dat de verhalen van Kafka bij je oproepen zijn onbeschrijfelijk.

Ik durfde heel lang niet aan Kafka te beginnen. Bang dat het tegen zou vallen. Dat viel mee. Surrealistische universa, onnavolgbare schrijfstijl, hilarisch bij vlagen.

Kafka is en blijft goed. De verhalen herlezen toen ik in Praag verbleef, dat geeft het geheel nog net een extra dingetje. Zo schrijven als Kafka; niemand kan het, behalve Kafka dus.

I really enjoyed most of the longer stories. The absurd world that Kafka is able to paint is very intriguing and makes sure you want to keep reading on. I didn’t care as much for the 1-page stories, although some were enjoyable.

Deze Nederlandstalige editie bevat blijkbaar veel meer verhalen dan de Engelstalige collectie met dezelfde naam. De meeste van die extra verhalen zijn de moeite niet waard.
Deze collectie bevat zeer sterke verhalen, maar het grote merendeel was wellicht beter ongepubliceerd gebleven.
Er mee rekening houdende dat Kafka zelf had gevraagd om zijn werken niet meer te publiceren, en deze collectie postuum is uitgebracht tegen zijn wensen in, probeer ik niet te streng te zijn tegenover de verhalen die ik niet goed vond.
Mijn vier sterren geef ik dan uitsluitend voor de verhalen die ik wel goed vond: "In de strafkolonie", "Het vonnis", "De stoker", "De nieuwe advocaat", "Een plattelandsdokter", "Voor de wet", "Een boodschap van de keizer".
Ik heb me door de andere verhalen moeten worstelen en heb meermaals op het punt gestaan dit boek op te geven.
De gedaanteverwisseling zelf, het titulaire werk van deze collectie, vond ik maar niets. Het duurt te lang en gaat nergens heen. Ik weet ook niet welke boodschap ik er uit moet halen. "Onvoorwaardelijke liefde bestaat niet?" Erg cynisch.
Mijn advies: als je na een paar zinnen nog geen klik voelt met een verhaal, begin dan gewoon aan het volgende. Op die manier is deze collectie nog wel de moeite waard.

In't kort: Gregor Samsa wordt, zonder enige aanleiding, op een morgen wakker in de gedaante van een gigantische insekt. Uiteraard reageert zijn omgeving daar nogal dramatisch op. Zijn werkgever komt de anders zo stipte Gregor (maar nu uiteraard te laat omwille van) thuis opzoeken, maar rent al snel in blinde paniek het huis uit. Zijn familie houdt het iets 'rustiger', vooral zijn zus probeert hem naar best vermogen te verzorgen, maar dat eist zijn tol. Paps moet weer beginnen werken wegens een kostwinner minder, ook zus neemt een baantje aan. Maar de kruik gaat maar zolang te water tot ze breekt, en de oprispingen en de humeurswisselingen van Gregor nopen de familie ertoe hem te laten verkommeren. Tot Gregor uiteindelijk sterft.
Mijn oordeel: Schitterend geschreven, leest als een trein, maar soms o zo vreemd. Vooral het onderwerp zelf is zo schokkerend, ook al lijkt het voor Gregor toch een beetje de gewoonste zaak van de wereld, hij heeft , lijkt het, 'gewoon pech gehad.'
Af en toe pakkend ook, vooral dan wanneer de familie besluit om Gregor met de beste zorgen te omringen, ondanks de toch uitzonderlijke omstandigheden.
