Humanity has long believed that it was the highest order of life on Earth, the pinnacle of evolution. We were wrong. There are others who covet the crown, and they aren't pleased with what we've done to the planet. Pollution and overpopulation have left our world crippled and spiraling towards utter destruction.

To many among the preternatural species, mankind is a disease that must be remedied if anyone is to survive the next step. Kagan, tyrant of the vampire cabal and his ally the mongrel father Ahmu, have raised an army. Fueled by hate and a mysterious stimulant simply known as "juice", they will cut a swath through human civilization.

The cabal is not without enemies, however. There are allies among the others, those who will strive for the betterment of all. An ancient empress and her most loyal general will lead the charge to save us.

Humanity itself is not totally defenseless. The Angelista Corporation has been expecting this day for quite some time. Preparations have just been completed for the most advanced weapons system ever devised by man. All they need now is the right candidate, and they just found one. But will their invention be enough to protect them from a fanatical cult of elemental channels?

It's an adrenaline soaked thrill ride through a world of overwhelming darkness. Alliances will be struck, millennia old feuds will be reignited, and blood will be spilled in all corners of the globe. The end is nigh, The Purging War has begun.

I'm an independent writer with an all encompassing love of all things related to the supernatural. Magic, monsters, alternate dimensions, ancient evils, etc. It's all fun stuff. I've been wanting to get myself started in the biz for some time, but only this year did I actually manage to finish a complete book. The time has come to make my dream a reality, even if nobody likes, or reads my work. My goal is to write several series of novels over the next few years. One is an apocalyptic war between humanity and several supernatural species, another is about totemic magic, and yet another is a fantasy epic set in an alternate universe that I am still in the process of designing. I do have one huge roadblock to completing my mission though. I am an anal retentive planner. I can't sit down to type out even a small portion of a story until I know exactly what is going to happen from start to finish. Hopefully I can change that in the near future. The feeling of looking at a finished product for sale in the smashwords store is quite a rush.

I received this in ebook format from the author in exchange for a review.

Being the month of October, I decided to read something along the lines of horror/paranormal. I had a few stipulations, 1. it had to be an ebook, 2. it had to be free, and 3. it could not be paranormal romance. I was looking for something a little more dark and sinister. I came across a post from the author asking for reviewers for his book, The Purging. I read the synopsis and decided it might just fit the bill.

I want to first say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I say this because initially I did not think I was going to like the book. In fact, I was at least 4 or 5 chapters into the book and afraid I wouldn't be able to finish it. I was ready to pass the book off as "a great idea for a book, but bad execution." I did not like the characters, there were too many characters, I wasn't getting enough background information about the characters, I did not like the author's writing style. I thought he was using words just to try to impress the reader. And where was that horror story with the "monsters I would want to flee from fear" at? I was beginning to feel like I was reading something more akin to a parody of a horror story. And yet the story kept calling to me. I would find myself thinking about it after I had stopped reading. So, I would sort of groan and start back reading hoping I would find something likeable about it and thinking there must be something there because I keep wondering about those characters and their stories. Also, feeling that I owed the author a review, I continued to read. I am so glad I did!
It was around chapter 12 when I distinctly remember sitting up and saying, "Holy Crap! The author has had a plan all along." Everything was coming together. I suddenly realized why I did not like certain characters in the beginning of the book, I was beginning to realize why the author left so much of the characters history out of the story, I was making connections, and I was discovering that what the author had done was actually quite clever. He has left himself a wide berth in which he will be able to continue the story in so many different ways and with so many different characters. Each character could actually become a book in and of itself that tells their history, backstory, etc. up until the point we are introduced to them in this story. There are elements of mythology that can be explored. Lessons that can be taught from the mythological elements of the story. There are lots of social issues that can be explored, such as slavery and servitude. There are environmental issues and warnings to be expounded upon, such as overpopulation and the drain of natural resources, etc. And, best of all, at this point in the book I was really beginning to enjoy the author's writing style. I feel like the author's writing got so much better as the book went along. I mean he's funny, like LOL funny and very clever too. For example, when discussing the name of a horrendous battle in which many humans were killed by vampires during the night in the war on humanity, it is revealed that the first day is referred to as "Nightfall." One character states that the name sounds ridiculous. The other character says that he thought so too and he suggested the name Twilight, but "some asshole had it trademarked."
I was looking to read a horror story because of Halloween and the month of October. This isn't a horror story by my definition, but it is so much more. It's more of a super hero/supernatural with mythological elements story that I found very entertaining and very satisfying. I hope the author continues to write because I really want to know more about these characters and their individual stories.
I am giving it 4 stars on Goodreads, but in actuality I would give it 3.5 stars because of some corrections and light revisions that need to be made.

Eons of Darkness by Reed Bosgoed
Book One The Purging
Kagan, a hideous vampire, appeared on the internet to announce to the world that vampires were tired of humans’ and had decided that, in one week’s time, the vampires will be murdering them to extinction and taking back control of the world. He invited other vampire tribes to join with him, but warned them to stay out of his way if they chose not to do so.
People denounced the video has a hoax and continued on with their lives. A website went up that showed vampires preparing weapons. A huge clock onscreen counted down the hours.
Benjamin Guitierrez was one of the few people who believed the video was real and he was worried. He prepared his car for the attack and he discussed this with his cousin Juanito as they walked through the airport to pick up a package. Both were major gang leaders and well-known criminals. There was 24 hours left before the vampires were scheduled to take over the world. At that moment, all flights were delayed, cell phone service dropped, and all hell broke loose.
Benjamin was a horrible man, a sociopath, yet the author actually expected the readers to believe the police were going to temporarily hand leadership of their ranks over to him. This scene alone was insulting and seemed to set the tone for the book. The entire book seemed to be a tome dedicated to violence for the sake of violence, not to tell a story, or to make a point.
The Purging was a difficult book to follow. It seemed to consist of a series of violent scenes pasted together with absolutely no coherent plot, or any threads linking the scenes together. The characters were not memorable; I actually had to look them up when they reappeared after not having been mentioned for a chapter or two. The few characters that appeared regularly had no depth. There was never any reason to get attached to any of the characters. No meaningful information was given about them that allowed the reader to connect to them, nor was there ever anything within the story that served to draw the reader into the author’s world.
The book was disorganized; words were often misused or created. If the book had actually followed the blurb, there could have been good story. Instead, the entire idea was buried within an orgy of pointless violence with no plot.
I received this book through Goodreads’ Lovers’ of Paranormal Read for Review program. All opinions are my own.
I rate this book a 2 out of 5.

never-finished

Let me start off by saying that I have a bit of ADD when it comes to books. I pick them up and drop them back down just as easily. The book has to grab my attention and manage to keep it enough for me to read the whole way through. As soon as my mind starts drifting, I just drop it because the reading then becomes a chore, not something that I'm looking forward to.

I picked this one up because the blurb sounded really awesome. I've read plenty of post apocalyptic books with supernaturals and some do have supernaturals helping the humans, but not always are they actively fighting against another group to help the humans, and this is what drew me in initially and why I requested a copy for review in the first place.

The Purging had a very strong start with Kagen throwing down his ultimatum, or more like his 1 week notice, and being all disgustingly violent on camera. Unfortunately after that is when I had started having problems.

I'm not an English teacher nor am I some connoisseur of the English language but I can tell when some words and spelled and used wrong, and this was the case here. Every time I came across another one it would distract me from the book, and as it turns out there were quite a few in just the first 20% (that's how far I made it).

My other problem was with the writing it self. I'm never a fan of third person, and in this case it didn't help at all, but I understand why it was used. My issue was with the Ben yelled: He said: She replied:, it didn't flow. It felt choppy and made me distracted yet again. I was hoping the plot would be interesting enough for me to be able to ignore all of that, but it wasn't.

So ultimately, I ended up stopping at the 20% mark. The Purging has a great premise but was a lacking in the execution.

I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. The story is told from various perspectives as the mankind’s age as the dominant species flickers to an end. This is a fast paced, action packed story that will keep you turning pages. At many times I caught myself picturing it as an excellent graphic novel. If you like origin stories or superhero stories (with a good mix of violence) than you will definitely enjoy this one.

I will say that there were a few places where the story slowed slightly or the dialogue got a little in its own way, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps my favorite section involved the channels (elemental beings). The descriptions were vividly painted and the action scenes involving them were entirely captivating. I really hope the author continues to explore this component of the plot in the sequel. I could have read an entire novel based on just that one species.

The novel has everything, Vampires, Were-beasts, Elementals/Channels, and even Cyborgs. The cyborg story-line was my least favorite, but was still thoroughly entertaining (again all of this would be great source material for a fantastic graphic novel series). I am really looking forward to the sequel!

I tried really hard to like this book, but 12 chapters in I had to give up.

The story begins with Kagan (a vampire) giving the world a warning that in one week's time they would take over the world and kill all humans. He actually kills a girl on screen in a very gory manner. The story continues from there with Ben a member of the Mexican Mafia as our protagonist......I'm sorry I just couldn't relate to this character. Ben and his cousin are at the airport in LA when the attacks begin and from there the story goes from awful to worse. Lots of action, blood and gore. It felt like I was reading a screenplay for a really bad action/horror flick.

When I read the synopsis I thought this story had real potential and it's a new author which I usually enjoy, but the book doesn't live up to its promise. There was so much gore and not much plot that I was not only repulsed by he descriptions but also started getting bored.

However if action/horror/sci-if is your thing, give it a try. You might enjoy it. It's just not for me.

Maybe it should have been a warning to me that The Purging was the thirteenth book I read during December. It was one of the worst books I have ever read. (I would say the worst, but I've had the misfortune recently to review so many bad books that I hate to tempt fate.)

As other reviewers have noted, the Goodreads synopsis sounded promising. Unfortunately, Reed Bosgoed's horrendous writing and the complete absence of any coherent plot destroyed the book's potential. I am one of those irritating people who always sees typographical and grammatical errors. Usually, I feel compelled to note them on my Kindle as I encounter them; it was a measure of how abysmally written this book was that even I finally gave up marking all of the tense changes, punctuation errors, misspellings (a simple run through grammar check would have pointed out that assent, ascent, and accent have different meanings), and ridiculously poor word choices (I can't think of the last time so many people "wended" their way somewhere).

I agree with reviewer Lillian that The Purging can best be described as "a screenplay for a really bad action/horror flick." Had I not felt the same ethical obligation to finish and review the book expressed by reviewer Telma *.*, this book might have been the first book ever to defeat me.

I strongly encourage Bosgoed to find a good editor and proofreader before he even considers publishing the second volume in his Eons of Darkness series. Postscript: I just posted my review on Amazon and saw that two people are credited as "editors" of The Purging. My only hope is that they were just friends of Bosgoed's whom he wanted to thank for an early reading; if Bosgoed paid for their editing services, he should demand his money back.

I received a free copy of The Purging from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Excellent!

I rarely give a book five stars but this one deserved it if not more.
The subplots and side stories were well defined and perfectly executed. Sometimes writers tend to forget those are to enhance the main storyline, and take you way off point. Or, they barely give enough info to allow you to develop needed background info. It makes you wonder if you missed a previous book.
Another thing I liked was how the story started immediately. No long, drawn out buildup. It all starts on page one and by page three you're holding your breath. From that point, this book has you holding onto to seat.
My criteria for the five stars? I could not put this book down from beginning to the end, excellent writing geared towards adults,( and I don't mean graphic descriptions of sex, the violence at times can be, though with this subject matter, it cannot be avoided). The plot was well defined and that was maintained throughout the book. I didn't have to go back and re-read chapters to see if I missed anything because suddenly the there is a twist and it's not making sense. Last, as an American I find it takes me out of a story (you know that delightful haze you're in with a good book that surrounds you, and blocks out the world around you?) when one of our UK cousins are writing for an American character, but the dialect is not how an American would actually speak. This writer has done an amazing job capturing American English, as well as the dialects spoken by the many ethnic groups living here. In other words, the language along with the way the story was written is done in as believable a fashion as one can get for this subject matter. Who knows? Perhaps if we humans do not clean up our act really soon, we will start seeing those things that up until now have been living inside the depths of our imagination?

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Before I started, I had in mind it would be one of those horror books, with lots of gory descriptions. However, to my surprise it was much more than that. It tells you of an apocalyptic war started by the sups (vampires, werewolves, elementals etc.) who want nothing more than to destroy human kind and return to the top of the food chain. Along the way, you meet people (and other sups) who are fighting back, determined not to let that happen.
I love the way Mr. Bosgoed introduces the characters. They have all their own stories, and you get to know them as the attacks are launched in the cities. Some even gained new powers! I can't wait to read the sequel and learn how Jean, Mo, Yvette, Ben, Natusko, and company will fare against the growing numbers of their enemies.
Although Mr. Bosgoed has a slightly different ways of presenting dialogues and doesn't use the usual formatting, it did not deter me from the story. I was sucked in from the first page where he introduces the head of the foes, Kagan, and he kept my interest high right until the end. I loved the story and I would recommend it to anyone who likes the superhero kind of story/movie.

I was browsing for a horror story and came across a post from Reed offering a coupon so I feel I need to be up front about that to begin with.

There were a couple of typos and yes, the formatting was not typical but these paled into insignificance for me. The story starts with a real buzz and it continues that way throughout. There are several main characters from different types of horror fantasy genres and the action takes place across the world. Characters are drawn quickly and have definite personalities, depth is added with their experiences ... I found myself disliking some and warming to them later and vice versa.

There are violent episodes and some references to torture and S&M, however I would say everything is relevant and in context and that most adults who have read anything involving vampires, were creatures or end of world scenarios will have come across something similar previously.

Dare I say this is a very ambitious book which almost hits the spot aimed for. I think a good editor could tighten this and make it a great book, in the meantime, it is a VERY GOOD BOOK, an enjoyable read, a page-turner and difficult to put down.

Now all I want to do is find out what happens next!

I received this book from the author for an honest review his book!

Earth is dying, pollution and overpopulation are the cause. Creatures long thought to be no more than legends have once again revealed themselves. Their goal; to destroy the root of the problem, humans. Mankind's time as the dominant species is about to come to an end. Lines have been drawn between those among the preternatural species who wish the extinction of humans and those who would seek to protect them. The Purging War has begun. The Purging was told from several points of view. The book has vampires, elementals, as well as werebeast.

This book was very interesting; it was told from several different points of view. This part was the most annoying for me as you were not given any direction that the point of view was changing. The storyline pulled me in and other than the POV changing I found this book a very good read. It was high action and was a page turner.

I can not wait for the next book to come out!!! I look forward to continuing the series!!!

Thank you to the author for it was a real pleaser reading this book!

A look into darkness****
Open your mind to a new way that the paranormal creatures operate. They want to destroy all mankind as they know it. And the Purging War begins. This story is being told by several points of view. The views of the vampires, elemental as well they were people. I was blowed away that Kagan, a vampire used the internet to announce to the world that their time was up and the vampire was going to end their life.
This is a horror within a horror story and one you will not put down ****
So get a friend because this super natural is made for two.

*I was given The Purging for exchange of an honest review*

The Vampires in this story are definitely not The Cullens, they would eat them up for breakfast:)

The Purging is an excellent dark tale of what it would be like if the human race wasn’t at the top of the food chain. It’s told from several different POV, so you get a good idea of what everyone’s thinking as the war is brewing.

The dialogue confused me a few times but I still really enjoyed this book, and want to read the sequel. What I liked most about this book was the fact I’ve never read another story like this before. It’s a great dark tale with a new twist:)

Initially I thought with several different groups in the mix it might be hard to follow but it has proven to be totally engaging. The characters are well done. The author creates them with nuances that make them stand out....
(Possible spoiler alert)

My favorite characters would have to be Ben and Jean so far. Ben keeps the essence of his humanity while losing all the physical of it. And Jean is endearing in his lack of being endearing until you learn how much he's lost.

I can't read the next part of the story!!
