Double or Nothing #1

Double Crossed

Rate this book
Mission Find the stolen treasure. Eliminate the threat. Protect the girl at all costs. And for shuck’s sake, Jack, feed the shucking chicken.

The lost gold of Helen of Troy was supposed to be a myth, until it showed up behind enemy lines. Only to vanish once again when one of the soldiers double-crossed his own team.

Now, the recovery mission is in the hands of…well. A bunch of idiots.

Jack Crossed is a ripped, brooding Navy SEAL who will punch first, ask questions never.

Gabriel Madsen is a military man with the swagger of a rock star who cares about justice (almost) as much as he cares about his hair routine.

Kennedy Furhman is a whip-smart law student who moonlights at a strip club and, with the right makeup palette, can blend into any crowd.

It’s up to the three of them to find the lost gold, eliminate the bad guys, and, apparently, take care of a dumb-as-rocks pet chicken who won’t stop following them around.

Too bad the chemistry between the trio is pull-the-grenade-pin-out-with-your-teeth explosive. If only they could keep their hands off each other, they might be able to accomplish the mission.

But where’s the fun in that?

Double Crossed is a fast-paced, why choose romance with two rough military men and the woman they’d burn the world for. This book contains two possessive anti-heroes, explicit sexual situations, and violence. There is no cheating, and there is a HEA.

MMF ~Romance ~why choose ~ assassin~ thriller
Action packed, violent, sweet, sexy

This is my 1st by Adora Crooks and it was so great.
My favorite parts were of course Clucky the chicken and the awkward Thanksgiving at the parents house, it was so funny. Oh and Granny is hysterical and fun!

A reverse harem romance with an excellent plot YEAH!!
It was so good I’m pretty sure I’ll be reading it again.

The good
+ The open communication and honesty
+ Kennedy and Jack deciding they want Gabe with them permanently
+ Their safe space talks when they get on their knees and look each other in the eyes
+ Jack's expression of love and affection through touch
+ How free and open they all were with their kinks
+ The trust between all of them
    + Aftercare
    + Lots of cuddles
+ Jack's possessiveness immediately making space for Gabe to stake a claim as well
+ Kennedy bit the face of the man who tried to sexually assault her. Hell yeah
    + Clucky

The neutral
o Well, the blurb did warn me that they were all idiots, so I won't say anything about the stupid decisions they made. But o boy could things have gone differently if they thought with their brains instead of their guns (in every sense of the word)
o Was Kennedy's family forgiven in the end? Because they didn't deserve that. Her sister was a bitch and a bully, her mother didn't respect Kennedy and refused to listen to a word she said, and her father told Kennedy he felt like he owed her ex something because of the shame she had brought him. An ex that tried to rape Kennedy. How could her father not pick Kennedy's side in this?

The bad
    -
    - Kennedy and Jack had a sacred ritual for speaking safely, where they both went to their knees and looked into each other's eyes. Guess it was only sacred when it suited them, because when Jack asked for it at a very difficult moment Kennedy kneed him in the balls and left. Wtf?
    - They drank a lot of alcohol before they got together for the first time. It's always a pity when alcohol is required for relationship development, and it impedes consent. I'm glad Jack and Kennedy had already spoken about the possibility when they were sober, but it still didn't sit right with me

Quotes
My cigarette has a long tail. "Anyone have an ashtray?"
Jack cups his palm and holds it out for me. He lets me shake it out into his hand.
And they say gentlemen are a dying breed.

"If I can fit them both in my cunt, surely I can fit them both in my heart."

This book was silly and sweet and also really violent and action-packed. I don't think the plot made a lot of sense, but I didn't really care either because I was here for the relationship. They were so great together and I really liked the way they were when they were around each other. Would recommend if you're looking for a light-hearted and sweet relationship at the center of a pretty violent and surreal action plot. And a pet chicken.

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the balance throughout the book between the smut and the action. Watching Jack grow throughout the book from being so closed off to opening up more and learning how to better express his feelings instead of not acknowledging them was great to see. Gabe was fantastic. Loved him. He was so patient with both Kennedy and Jack which really helped them both grow while they were able to give Gabe a real home and a family. So cute. Plus he had such a fantastic sense of humor which really helped to diffuse a lot of situations. Kennedy was also a fun character. It was nice to see her be able to open up more by the end instead of pushing everything down. Her liberty bell move really came full circle which made me laugh. Loved the show tune references especially at Thanksgiving.

Honestly though, the star of the entire book was Clucky. What a great chicken!

I downloaded this with the stuff your kindle day, wasn’t expecting much… it’s safe to say I am thoroughly overjoyed 😂 I absolutely loved this! It was so smutty & the dynamics between Jack, have and Kennedy was perfect, especially loved Jack beginning to trust and love them both (of course it’s why choose themed). Also love that Kennedy could hold her own even with her two mercenary boyfriends

Jack Crossed, Kennedy Furhman, and Gabriel “Gabe” Madsen.

Jack Crossed is a retired SEAL who does “no questions asked” mercenary work. His latest job goes sideways when the man he’s instructed to assassinate — one Gabriel Madsen — turns out to be a brother-in-arms. Instead of killing his target, he incapacitates him so he can get the whole story.

Turns out Jack’s mission wasn’t sanctioned and the moment he saves his bound prisoner from a sniper shot, he puts his own head on the chopping block. Not only are both men now fugitives, but so is anyone they love, including Jack’s girlfriend Kennedy.

Lots of running, hiding, and trying to figure out who is after both Gabe and Jack.

Did I mention Gabe is a charming, bisexual flirt? He’s a good foil for Jack who isn’t the most expressive person. And Kennedy wants to bring Gabe into their bed. Turns out, Jack wants that too.

Includes edge play, specifically …

Personally, I adore Gabe. Love me a witty, charming, man who will flirt with anyone.

This is my first Adora Crooks book and it definitely will not be my last. I LOVED this book. I do not give out 5 stars very easily or often. For a book to get 5 stars from me, it has to meet a few criteria: illicit some sort of emotion (this book had me ROLLING the humor was top notch and always hit at the exact right times), not have many noticeable typos (I found less than 3 on my initial read), desire to read it again (I WILL be reading this again), good spice (I mean…their first encounter together is a DVP scene sssooo….), and I need some good and believable character development throughout (let me tell you, Jack alone met this criteria for me).

This book kept me interested throughout and at no point was I wondering “how much longer”. It’s fast paced enough to keep your attention but, not too fast where you feel like you don’t know the characters at all. I loved all 3 characters, they each felt needed for the relationship to work and each of them was so likable. Getting to watch Jack and Gabe’s relationship develop was so precious.

Just read this book, it’s an easy read and you will fall in love with it! I can’t finish this review without mentioning Clucky - the true star of this book!

Their Adventurous Journey to Survival -
Wow! I think I need a shot of brandy to calm my nerves after reading this book. This action-packed romance story had so many twists and turns, as well as unexpected sexual connections, that will leave you feeling the thrill you get when you finish riding the Kingda Ka rollercoaster. There were parts of the story that had me sitting in the edge of my seat and eagerly turning the pages to see what was going to happen next and whether their relationship would end in a happily ever after.

The suspense, drama, danger, angst and sultry passion woven through the story, makes this a definite must read book. I suggest you carve out a few hours where you won’t be interrupted before you start reading, because there is no chance you will want to take a break until you read the final word.

My favourites in this book:
•Awkward Thanksgiving dinner as a trigger warning. LOL
•Her laugh "sounds like Christmas ornaments clinking together". So cute!
•The chicken. OMG the best
•"A man with a doggy bag is inherently less suspicious than a man without one." hahaha yes
•"His only crime is that he rolls his window all the way down when we're driving so he can let his arm hang out, like he's a wild tree that's outgrown his container." LOVE!
Also exceptional:
•pornstache
•granny.
Won't say more, no spoilers.
Finally, Gabe Madsen is now my n.1 favourite book boyfriend. Love, love, love!

Thanks to the author for the ARC copy.

FINALLY A REVERSE HAREM WITH AN ACTUAL PLOT! I loved this. Usually books like this don’t have a developed story and characters but this one did. Not to mention Clucky who was the star of the show. This is the first book I’ve read of Adora’s and I will definitely be reading more. If you are a reverse harem girlie, it’s safe to say you will LOVE this. Top tier spice but in a way that it compliments the plot and enhances the story not just for the sake of it being spicy.

If a romantic comedy and a dark romance had a baby…

One TikTok video and I had to read this. So glad I did.

MMF dark ops romance. Enjoyed the plot, the action, and the spice.

I loved Jack and Kennedy’s dynamic and how integrated with Gabe they became. He smoothly fit in with them.

The Clucky was the real star though 😂

Free stuff-your-kindle amazon deal.

Expectations were very low.
The tone from the start suprised me, very male, almost a noir detective feel. 'Macho man' kept playing in my head! But the writing is far better than I'd expect for a freebie mmf.

It actually takes them a long while to get it on. If danger gun play is your kink, happy days. I didn't find any of it hot. Smart kitten Kennedy is always wet and desperate with pointy nipples. Her men are hard. There's an orgasm count, some purring, then on with the story.

There's a lot of wtf? Ludicrous action scenes. None of the characters are likeable or as tough/clever/smart as we're told. The plot is ridiculous, love from nowhere. A sweet innocent angel kitten stripper with an ever dripping cunt.

But it's not terrible. It had potential. Insomnia hit and I read to the end. From me, this is a good rating, it's not what I'd generally pick up to read.

Ahhhhhh the amazing Tesla that never needed charging.

FMC x MMC1

She's a law student, stripping at night for the bills. Her live in BF is MMC1 - former SEAL, now bartending at the same strip club, in between his off the books assassin assignments for a secret society. His contact is a former higher up.

Gets sent for a mission .... Except it's another society member. They end up banding together after he's unsuccessful. The other guy (MMC2) has a story about a "mission" he went on, in a group, w M1's contact, that turned out to be an everyone's dead theft mission. Except he's left and now people are being sent after him, M2.

They escape, grab the GF, hide out in his off the books cabin in N Ga (that has power & water). They hook up 🔥🔥🔥 and steal the artifact back. They return it to a guy from a different agency. Bad guy dies, the end.

It isn't often a book manages to blend genres as well as this one does. We've got military, off the books mercenaries, dodgy business men, an international treasure hunt, mmf. A lot happens but with a fast pace and few interruptions it didn't take too long to read in one sitting.

This book wasn't just steamy; it was also really fun! I loved all three characters, but especially Gabe, the wisecracking smart-ass. He and Kennedy are the sunshines to Jack's grump, and the three of them make a great team. And let's not forget about the intrepid Clucky! I hope that Kip gets a book of his own. Looking forward to the next one in this series!

Om en fight mellan två systrar:

”But if boys will be boys, girls will be nuclear warheads.”

Efter att ha skrämt bort hönan från sängen:

”I thought we had a rule about birds in bed.”
Kennedy stretches her arms above her head. She makes a sweet noise that makes my blood rush. “We do.”
“Which is…”
“If hens aren’t allowed in bed, neither are cocks.”

This was the last book in this months backlist buster (excluding bonus content) and I think I saved the best till last. I devoured this. It was slightly darker, but still managed to include the lighthearted banter and campy elements that Adora delivers so well. The plot was gripping- as the trio evade bad guys and try to retrieve and return a precious artefact-, and the characters were so much fun. I loved Kennedy - the pole dancer and law student. I loved how proud she was of her dancing, and how it was as much a part of her identity as being a law student. Jack was Kennedy's wolf, willing to do absolutely anything for her, except be vulnerable. Gabe was hilarious, and exactly what they needed for Jack to tap into his emotions and for the relationship to blossom.
I loved the grumpy x sunshine dynamic between Jack and Gabe - it made for some really funny scenes especially when they're out doing military shit together.
Special mention has to be made for the MVP Clucky, a stray chicken who probably helped Jack get vulnerable just as much as the other two did.
The spice was sizzling, and the scene in the woods was particularly memorable (especially since Kennedy blurts out what happened over Thanksgiving dinner).
I've had so much fun with this backlist, and cannot wait for Double Bucked to release!!

CW: mentions of sexual assault, rope play and bondage, knife play and gun play, choking during sex, consensual degradation, violence, killing, mentions of PTSD, and kidnapping

Ugh the way I screamed when I found this in my inbox. HELL YEAH. THANK YOU ADORA.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Romance has become one of my favorite genres thanks to BookTok, but make it spicy and gay and I’m SOLD.

One issue I did notice was there were minor grammar/punctuation errors and some tense errors, forgetting words, adding words, etc. Nothing that took away from the story, of course, just something I noticed more than a few times. Past vs passed was one I noticed a couple times too. Maybe another pair of eyes to look over the book?

[EDIT: 7/30/23: just got an email that the arc doesn’t have final edits and all the grammar/punctuation, etc errors I noted above will be ironed out in the final version so please ignore that lol]

And Clucky. Oh Clucky had my heart from the first moment she made her appearance lmao. The way she somehow managed to get herself in to “trouble” in the first 10% of the book had me howling and the way she is just literally so chill. Reminds me of the chicken from Moana.

Gabe and Kennedy and Jack were the best. The stars of the show, obviously, but man I fell in love with all three immediately. Gabe’s cockiness and suaveness, Kennedy’s ability to love and love deeply, and Jack’s protectiveness and willingness to go to ridiculous lengths to protect those he loves.

This was such a sweet and GOOD book. I literally couldn’t put it down. Mildly disappointed it wasn’t longer lol cause I want more Gabe, Kennedy, and Jack. Hm. Maybe a reread in like a week??

Jack is a 'living, breathing, walking weapon' working for the privately funded Wolfpack mercenary agency but it hasn't stopped him from having a relationship with the fierce and sassy Kennedy. Then Jack's mission flips upside down, people are dead and a priceless necklace is missing. To recover and return the necklace to it's rightful country Jack and everyone he cares about will be a target.

Kennedy is willing to do whatever it takes to get through law school, even if it means working as a stripper. Her love for Jack gets her through the tough times but she knows something is holding him back emotionally. Then Gabe comes into their lives so unexpectedly and it is quickly obvious both she and Jack have feelings for a man they aren't even sure they can trust.

Gabriel Madsen was the target, now he's helping Jack to catch the real bad guys and recover the jewels. He's light-hearted and easy-going and helps Jack to lighten up enough to enjoy the small moments. But he and Jack will have to learn to trust each other if they all want to survive what's coming.

Time is running out and Jack and Gabe are on the run with Kennedy while trying to catch the man they thought they could trust with their lives. When their mission puts Kennedy's life is in danger both Jack and Gabe will do whatever it takes to protect her.

My only concern with this book was the enormous amount of typos in the ARC copy I received. I hope this book is cleaned up before the release day.

I received an ARC and freely offer this review.

I tried, I really tried to like this book I just flat out didn’t. At all. To start with I don’t like Jack. Something about him rubs me the wrong way. First he says he’s not the settling down type but he’s “playing house” with Kennedy. I mean SHE doesn’t know it but who cares. He’s this elite spy/assassin and in the story he knows, deep down that something is terribly wrong with his new assignment but f it, he does it anyway. Then he decided it’s not his fight (even though he should realize they are going to kill him). So he just hands something over, ready to walk away and see someone else die for doing what was right- standing up to the organization that had used them to kill people. This big, bad army warrior is a fucking coward. Shortly after planning on watching an innocent guy die his ever devout, idiot of a girlfriend says
“I can’t believe that…did Anders really think you were going to just hand him over like that? Like some…human slavery trade?”

Ummmm yes yes he was. Did she miss that while she was standing right next to him? There is just so much that made me roll my eyes. Like this….

I have my scars (the jagged ridge down my throat to my clavicle, the dent in my left calve) and Kennedy has hers (the inch-long protrusion on her bicep where her birth control implant lives under her skin).

Did he just seriously compare his scar gotten in war which frankly could have been life threatening to her birth control implant. Did I read that right?

Just hated the characters.

Me Caveman. You Mine.

4.5 stars - Before I get started, I think I should point out that the star of the show isn't Jack Crossed, Kennedy Fuhrman, or Gabriel "Gabe" Madsen. Oh, no. It's definitely Clucky the chicken. 😂🐔😂

All kidding aside, Clucky does provide some comic relief, but the mission that goes sideways and the chemistry between this trio is riveting. Whether Jack is topping from the bottom or needing to rein in his caveman tendencies, Gabe is being an insatiable flirt, or Kennedy is struggling to balance all of her feelings, I found myself wanting to be in the middle of them. 🤗💙🔥

I’ve never won the lottery— not even a couple bucks. I suck at poker. I’ve never gotten out “by the grace of God” in any of my missions here or overseas.

But I hit the jackpot with her.

-- Jack Crossed

He's good about admitting his feelings, but only to himself. Jack is a bit of an enigma, but I really liked him, caveman qualities and all.

As for Kennedy and Gabe, I love that they are open to the possibilities that life throws at them. Kennedy bucked expectations from her family and community and set her own path. And Gabe, well he was a lone wolf before be left Wolfpack but he seemed to assimilate with relative ease with his found family.

There are some plot holes, but I mostly ignored them and enjoyed the ride as it was presented.

This MMF romance between 2 ex-military men and a stripper is an engaging story. There are all the makings of a best-selling thriller: hit men, priceless artifacts, and bad dad jokes. The addition of a chicken that acts more like a cat makes for some comical moments. "Clucky", as Jack calls her, is the comic relief in many scenes.

There were no chickens harmed during the writing of this book. Good to know.

It's not hard to imagine the characters that this author has created. They all have a past that haunts them, each with their own ghosts. There is a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner scene with Kennedy's immediate family, including her ill-tempered twin sister that probably sums up the fmc's early years at home. It's almost laugh out loud funny.

There are a number of graphic sex scenes, and the author lists quite a number of possible triggers at the beginning of the book. I think the gun play/knife play most affected me since I wasn't expecting that. Be aware that this is an MMF romance between 3 adults, including MM action. Violence is graphic as well. If you have any reservations about any of these concerns, this book is not for you.

It's a fun time and I recommend it for fans of snarky commentary and thrilling action.

Oh man. This story. Excellent plot. It does have trigger warnings so make sure you check it. This suspenseful romance was full of plot twists. It almost reminded me of Romancing the Stone, with the hidden treasure aspect. It was angsty, sexy, sassy, spicy, sensual, sultry, a little kinky and full of mystery. Adora did a good job of keeping me on my toes.
The story line contained: Private military secret agencies, 2 ex military alpha males, the young lady they fell in love with, a secret treasure, secret missions gone wrong, lies, omissions, deceptions, murderous plots, backstabbing and double crossing, and the chicken that stole the show Clucky.
The story does start off with Jack and Kennedy(MF) then you through Gabe in the mix. And, we get a throuple, with some MM scenes too. I must say they were the perfect combination of right. They complemented each other so well in the relationship. They each gave each other the love and confidence that they were maybe missing individually. It was great to watch them all grow personally and in love throughout the book. And, Clucky was the comedic relief we didn’t know we needed. Great read.
