Demon Days, Vampire Nights [Dramatized Adaptation] #5

Natural Mage [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
After narrowly surviving my debut into the magical world, I made a promise to no more hiding in broom closets.

But with the Mages' Guild reorganizing faster than anyone thought possible, and naming me as their number one target, that promise seems a little far-fetched. Especially since my training with Callie and Dizzy, the highly experienced dual-mage pair, goes off like a cake in a cannon.

Left to find someone that can fill the role, it isn't until a formal dinner party goes horribly wrong that I find the best (and worst) solution Reagan Somerset, the leather-clad crazy woman who busted into my broom closet sanctuary in the first place.

Through an off-kilter teaching style and many punches in the face, I learn my true potential. But with her happier busting heads and kicking in doors than staying put with a pupil in hiding, it isn't long before the world comes crashing down. The Guild has found me, and they intend to take me alive.

I did enjoy this one quite a bit more than the first one. The heroine was less wide-eyed ingenue and had a better grasp of how the world works. We got less golly gee from her, and there was less of the FMC getting after everyone for cursing or taking the Lord's name in vain. No more instalove, but there is some pining. I liked the way the stoey flowed more in this one. Also, it was great seeing Reagan from a third person point of view, which just emphasized her crazy.

Well, this was not more grown-up than the previous book. As with the last one, the concept as a whole is good—take down the evil guild and get together with the sexy mage—but this entry was basically just a training montage. First, they tell, not show, us that she trained with Dizzy and Calli, then she “trains” with the vampires, and finally, she trains with Raegan. Emory doesn’t come back into the picture until about the halfway point. The last fight scene is interesting, and we get to see more of what Raegan can do—and then, it’s over.

The next book is the conclusion of this trilogy, and I look forward to it, but in an “I’m curious” way instead of an “ooh, I can’t wait to read it” way.

I was a little disappointed with the spice, right when things we ramping up, it switched scenes. I wouldn't exactly call this a closed door book, because leading up to the main event was quite graphic, so it's a weird mixture of too spicy for those who don't like spice, and not spicy enough to be satisfying for those of us who do like spice.

Action-packed with battles, magic, romance and a hearty dose of Reagan serving as Penny's teacher.

Basic plot: Penny trains with Raegan as the situation with the mage guild comes to a head.

This book was a fun read, but not a whole lot is sticking with me right now. The pacing felt good, but a lot was going on and I had to keep stopping in the middle of action scenes. It's led to some memory holes. The story is clearly heading to a climax.

I liked it enough to finish the trilogy, but liked Natural Witch a lot more!

Things I liked:
1. As always the battle scenes are fantastic
2. A lot less mentioning of the term “turd swallop”
3. Regan was mostly funny

Things I didn’t like:
1. The losing the V card scene was ick
2. Regan was occasionally annoying
3. The L word too soon

I loved Penny's voice actor but having a separate narrator for Emery's POV from his voice actor threw me off, it just felt strange because Penny's voice actor was her POV narrator as well.

I also felt like this one seemed very abridged compared to the book.

I enjoyed this one. Penny is starting to come out of her shell a little more and once Emory returns she seems to become more balanced in her powers. There’s lots of fighting in this one as the mages guild is trying to capture Penny and Emory. I’m looking forward to what’s to come.

I'm really enjoying this series in dramatized form.
I like that Penny is growing out of her naiveté with her magic and the world, really.
This book gets her teamed up with Reagan, which I really found fun.
I'm excited to see where the next book takes Penny and her rogue natural mage, Emery.
