4.5 stars rounded up....

The story starts out with Kyle, a teenager who awakens in a dark, unfamiliar room and soon discovers his bloody, ravaged leg. He thinks he must be drunk and that his friend is merely pulling a prank at his expense. Until he sees the cloaked figure brandishing an electric saw....

Teenagers are turning up missing at an alarming rate. However, police officials aren't putting forth their best effort to find them since most of the kids who have vanished were delinquents from troubled homes. Runaways, they conclude. Yet, one officer, Michael Brookes, finds himself personally involved in the investigation when his nephew's best friend goes missing. Despite pressure from his superiors to cease his investigation, he teams up with the new rookie officer under his charge, Sam Strike, to find out what has happened to the missing youngsters. The disappearances don't appear to be coincidental and they suspect foul play. When Michael's nephew vanishes, he puts his job and life on the line to find the young boy. But will it be too late?

Curious about the photo? You'll see what it's about...! Readers beware: This story contains scenes of gore and violence. You'll likely be surprised to find out who--or what--is responsible for the abductions. This is a refreshingly original story with a nice twist. I look forward to reading more books by this talented author.

Original!...One by One They Disappear is one of those books that could easily be read in one sitting, but I chose not to, because I didn't want it to end. I read a little each day to get a taste of what ticks inside this authors demented mind. This "original" story had just the right mixture of horror and gore to satisfy any horror lover who can stomach it. It is not for the weak bellies. This was one enjoyable read for me, but I wish the ending was longer. The book left me wanting more and for that it deserves 5 stars from me. I will be reading more from this author. A good read!

Bit gruesome for me - dry heaving when reading is not good.

"Caroline Gebbie's books are not for everyone, but if you like your horror more visceral, with a nice helping of blood you will love this."

There's a good solid story here, but which gets a bit lost in the confusion between genres. On the one hand the books could be a decent if rather cliched detective novel, or it could be a very graphic horror/slash story. The problem is that it really isn't either. That isn't to say it's bad, as it isn't by a long shot.

The lead character is a recently widowed police Sergent, only a few month short of retirement, who is disillusioned with his job, clashes regularly with his politically motivated boss, gets partnered with a keen rookie (see what I mean about the cop show cliches?) when a friend of his nephew goes missing.

While the reader knows what the young man's fate is likely to be from the graphic torture his predecessors have gone through it's a race against time for the Srg, and the rookie, to get to the bottom of it, before nephew puts himself in danger.

Now don't get me wrong for all the cliches - most of which are actually pointless to the plot so could be there for some sort of irony - this book has great characters, and a good plot although perhaps a touch of unbelievability about the true identity of the offender and the ending is much too sudden which could be fixed with a badly needed epilogue to tie up loose ends.

Still well worth a read.

it was ok. I kept being distracted by typos with punctuation & spelling.
