Can you even rate something that both tortured and fascinated you?

Wow this book is intense. It made me want to kill myself sometimes because it has so much info per square inch that it's kind of like reading a whole set of encyclopedias that's on...EVERYTHING in life! It was a lot to digest but it's crazy that this book even exists and I can't believe I read it all and managed to regurgitate it for repeated exams.

To βιβλίο Βιολογία των Campbell & Reece αποτελείται από τρείς τόμους. Στον 3ο τόμο που είναι το βιβλίο για το οποίο θα αναφερθώ εδώ φέρει τον τίτλο «Μορφή και Λειτουργία στα Φυτά-Μορφή και Λειτουργία στα Ζώα-Οικολογία». Η μετάφραση του βιβλίου έχει πραγματοποιηθεί από τους Θόδωρο Κοκκορόγιαννη, Βασιλική Βακάκη, Αζαρία Καραμανλίδη, Στέλλα Γεωργίου και η επιστημονική επιμέλεια από τον ομότιμο καθηγητή Ιατρικής του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών Νικόλαο Μοσχονά.

Μορφή και Λειτουργία στα Φυτά. Η συγκεκριμένη ενότητα αναφέρεται σε βιολογικά θέματα που αφορούν τα φυτά. Βρήκα πολύ ενδιαφέρον το κεφάλαιο των φυτοορμονών όπου οι συγγραφείς του βιβλίου αναφέρονται στην δράση των αυξινών, των κυτοκινινών, των γιββερελίνων, των βρασινοστεροειδών, του αμπσισικού οξέος και του αιθυλενίου. Έμαθα από το συγκεκριμένο κεφάλαιο ότι η κάθε φυτοορμόνη αντιδρά ξεχωριστά σε κάθε τμήμα φυτού. Π.χ η εφαρμογή αυξίνης επιμηκύνει τον βλαστό και την ρίζα του φυτού ενώ το αιθυλένιο αναστέλλει την επιμήκυνση των κυττάρων και δρα στην επιτάχυνση της ωρίμανσης του φυτού. Ένα άλλο κεφάλαιο που μου έκανε εντύπωση είναι η αντίδραση ενός φυτού στα διάφορα μήκη κύματος του φωτός. Π.χ ένα φυτό μπορεί να αναπτύσσεται στο ερυθρό φως και να αναστέλλει την ανάπτυξη στο βαθύ ερυθρό φως ή στο σκοτάδι.

Η Ενότητα «Μορφή και Λειτουργία στα Ζώα» ομολογώ ότι με δυσκόλεψε λιγάκι διότι περιέχει πολλά κεφάλαια με πολλές λεπτομέρειες και αναλύσεις. Δεν βαρέθηκα όμως να διαβάζω την συγκεκριμένη ενότητα αφού περιλαμβάνει σημαντικά θέματα που θεωρώ ότι είναι αρκετά χρήσιμα για τους αναγνώστες. Αυτό που με ενθουσίασε περισσότερο και μου κίνησε το ενδιαφέρον είναι τα πειράματα διερεύνησης τα οποία θεωρώ ότι βοηθούν στην καλύτερη κατανόηση των κεφαλαίων.

Η τελευταία ενότητα «Οικολογία» με χαλάρωσε λίγο από την προηγούμενη ενότητα «Μορφή και Λειτουργία στα Ζώα». Το θέμα υπήρξε αρκετά ενδιαφέρον κυρίως στο σημείο που αφορά την προστασία των οικοσυστημάτων και των βιοκοινοτήτων και γενικά θεωρώ ότι το θέμα την οικολογίας είναι κάτι που μας αφορά όλους είτε έχουμε σχέση με την βιολογία του πλανήτη είτε όχι.

An amazing book, throughout. Easy-to-grasp illustrations abound (to say nothing of the animations on the accompanying CD-ROM). Overviews followed (quite a bit later, in the case of some chapters) by in-depth treatments, followed by (often visual) summaries provide all-important repetition.

I don't know how long it will take me to devour this in its entirety, seeing how I only sample it in chunks as I prepare this lesson or that (plus my curriculum doesn't require nearly the detail--and certainly not the breadth--this book offers) but I will read it all.
