“YOU DON'T SEE ME” was a truly phenomenal collection of seven short stories delving deep into the depth of humanity. I couldn’t put the book down it was an amazing read. I had the best time with it and I highly recommend it to horror lovers!
You don’t see me This definitely was an intriguing story but I was very confused by the ending. I would love to read more in depth on this one.
Book Club I was so impressed by this short story, it captivated me from the very beginning and left me wanting more. It was a fantastic story!
Chat/Room This was so good! Just wow, the ending was incredible just like the whole story.
Blue Wow… I’m truly speechless by this one.
Company Incredible!
Hysteria I got goosebumps while reading the end of this one. I absolutely loved the plot twist!
You Don’t See Me is a collection of short stories that essentially surrounds the characters’ love lives. Their love turns dark very quickly.
I feel like the first story, the book’s namesake, took a drastic leap to reach the ending. Aside from that individual story, they all seemed to have a steady pace.
By the end of each [very short] story, I said “wtf” at least twice. The further you get into the collection, the more effed up they become.
I loved being able to sneak in a bit of reading with these bite sized tales. It truly takes talent to pack so much into such few pages.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I gave this book a 3.5 because it was an interesting, thrilling read but there were a few things that turned me away, including the abrupt ending of the first story. I feel like it had more wiggle room and deserved more attention. It was actually my favorite one of the bunch until then.
Overall, I did really like the book and will still be giving it a 4⭐️ on GoodReads since they don’t do halfsies. I just wanted to be more honest where I can be.
If you want a quick read with a Love Gone Wrong trope, this one is definitely for you!
I dare you to keep your jaw off the floor while reading this one.
Thank you to @mmarques.writes and @twinsandtalent for letting me read and review You Don’t See me!
A huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this debut series of short stories!
This was definitely a fun read. The LGBTQIA+ representation was refreshing (and the acknowledgments at the end were so sweet), but also enjoyed the variance in characters.
The last half of stories were great, I liked the pacing and the style of leading the reader to read between the lines. Where it started off a bit rocky, wrapped up nicely in the end. The stories “Book Club” and “Chat/Room” fell a bit flat for me. They had a nice lead up to unexpected endings, but both ended predictably with not a lot of creativity in the execution. There were some sentence structures throughout that didn’t quite make sense, but didn’t necessarily take away from the story. Although,“Blue” was particularly good; carrying a fever like cadence. Definitely my favorite of the bunch. You could tell with the last few stories that the author had felt more confident in their writing style.
I think short stories are incredibly difficult to write - you have to come up with a new idea and execute it well in using only so many words. Marques does a lovely job of this! I hope to see more of their work in the future!
This collection of short stories will have you reading in suspense. I would love for some of these stories to be full-length books, they had such a gripping set of plots, with perfectly unusual characters, each with their own unique and twisted minds. This is a read which I can easily imagine as a show. The author has a great story telling mind and truly brings the twists and turns to life. This is great for a chilling sit down read, but it'll leave you doubting whether you want to be social again...
You Don't See Me by M. Marques was a fast and fun read.
It's a short story collection that I consumed in less than two hours. The stories were short, sweet, to the point, and some of them had some chilling final paragraphs.
Overall I really enjoyed this collection. Would've loved to see a few of the stories expanded a bit more.
I couldn’t put this book down! Story after story I had goosebumps and was always caught by surprise. A wonderful debut for M. Marques. If you like horror and thrill, give this a try, you won’t regret it!
TITLE: You Don’t See Me Author: M. Marques Pub Date: June 28, 2023 Genre: Horror, Short Story Anthology
I read this little gem of a book back in April.
Each story shares the common theme of people seeking connections with others in the most common, yet unexpected and deviant ways— all while hiding the dark and twisted side of themselves.
I recommend you check out this book if you’re looking for a quick read that makes you ponder how well you really know the people around you.
Thanks to author @mmarques.writes and @twinsandtalent for this copy of You Don’t See Me!
I think with short stories, there is a fine line between concise and abrupt narration. As for this particular book, I think what was missing is more of build up and more gradual tension. It would also benefit from more show and less tell. In short, I think some developmental edits would really elevate the writing. I enjoyed the bluntness and the ideas of the twists in this book. I think the author is really onto something here, except the whole thing didn't feel very refined but more like a first draft. Most of the stories felt either rushed or unfinished, with the reveal feeling too sudden to the point that it partially seemed a bit silly. I think it could be of benefit to the writing to explore the characters more and what their personalities are. Make the reader feel for the people, make them more realistic, and show who they are through interactions with people in their lives. Even if that makes the story more of a slow burn, I believe it would be beneficiary to really set the tone and the scene. Really go into description of places and people, for instance, what kind of clothes they are wearing, how are they standing or sitting, is the demeanor relaxed or tense. Make me as a reader believe that these people want the things they supposedly want. Another example, instead of the character literally telling us who they are, show it by letting them interact with coworkers, friends or neighbors. Allow a build up through leaving clues here and there as to their state of mind that would make the ending really make sense in retrospect. I think the author did succeed in this partially, but there is room for improvement. For example, the book club story felt too surreal, why did the main character make the choice that she did. I do not believe it was solely due to her reading preferences. Maybe give her a short backstory, some trauma or ideation of the macabre, perhaps her father is a serial killer, and she used to help him as a kid, and now she wants to have her own glory. And instead of letting her explain herself in the end, maybe show it through the eyes of the other people in the room. Maybe they can have flashbacks to something the main character has said or did to make them understand what had happened. Something that was done well was, for example, the reveal in the story Blue. It was so smooth that I missed when it actually happened, and I nearly gasped when it dawned on me what had occurred. Overall I could sense a sort of uncertainty or perhaps shyness from the author's voice, at the same time I can tell the author has a lot to say, a lot to share with an audience. My advice to the author would be to just let it out, to write like no one will read it, to share the stories with all their intensity and emotion. I think there is so much potential in the writing, and I would love to see how the author's voice develops in the future.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book to provide an honest review. The series of short stories completely blew me away! As a passionate lover of short stories, I must admit I've encountered my fair share that fell a little flat. However, in this collection, not a single one was bad. They all delve into the psychological realm, showcasing how incredibly sinister the human mind can be.
The author skillfully places these eerie tales in everyday settings like book clubs, social media, and dating, leaving you questioning everyone's intentions.
For me, the writing style bears a resemblance to Caitlin Marceau's, evoking a creeping sense of dread. Some sentences were so unbelievable that I had to reread them. The book's casual tone at times made the characters' actions seem justified, a talent on the part of the author.
Among the stories, my favorite has to be 'You Don't See Me,' although 'Hysteria' and 'Delivery' were also exceptional. Honestly, each one stood out in its own way.
I find it hard to believe that this is the author's debut work. It's truly amazing! I can't wait to read more from them!
You Don’t See Me has the suspense, blood, and various tones of emotion for every type of horror fan. Each story was unique and most had strong LGBTQ+ representation. Marques was able to create characters that both scared the hell out of me and made me root for them. A must read for those who love horror.
A couple favorites were:
Book Club 📚☠️
A book club that turns killer?! Need I say more?
Delivery 🍕
A Young Woman delivers a pizza to a man well known for his great tips.. but he also takes something from the delivery drivers
what a book! I was completely hooked on these short stories, particularly "You don't see me" and "Hysteria". I was completely absorbed in the stories, normal everyday situations, when suddenly, something horrific - that I was not expecting at all -would happen leaving me on the edge!
And it is so well written! What a wonderful book by M. Marques, can't wait for the next one(s).
Sometimes short stories can fall a little flat for me. This collection has the perfect amount of a foundation for each story so we know what’s going on and have enough of a chance to get invested. Each story ends in a twist so it makes every one fun to read. Overall this has that deep, almost poetic darkness I crave. 🖤 I’d definitely recommend this!
As far as short stories go, this one was great! I read all 7 of them in an hour. Some were rather abruptly ended, I could’ve continued with novellas on every single one of them. All of the stories share the theme of lonely people seeking connections but in unexpected and sometimes twisted ways. An easy and entertaining quick read!
A great collection of short stories to showcase the true horrors that lurk around us inconspicuously, everyday. I loved how each story truly felt entirely unique in voice and writing style!
Well that has to be the quickest book I have ever read. Albeit a collection of short stories, these were good. I could imagine these as anthological short episodes for a TV show
This twisted little horror collection of seven short stories was a morsel of yummy goodness!! From love gone awry, macabre bookclubs to unsuspecting customers, each story came with an unnerving feeling and now I'm looking at people with a side eye because now I trust nobody!!!
Definitely an escape from heavier reads and looking forward to reading more from this author!!
