Beyond The Mitten––across the Mackinac Bridge––is Michigan's Upper Peninsular. Kate, Fancy's cousin, commutes monthly from Mackinaw City to Michigan Tech in Houghton. After she leaves I-75 near Sault Ste. Marie, she travels east on M-28 through the forested woodlands, boggy swamps, and tiny villages along Lake Superior's shoreline. Here she escapes––leaves her worldly cares along sections of the wild and beautiful Hiawatha National Forrest.
Gigi’s first attempt to write was in orange crayon. She wrote across a Robert Lewis Stevenson’s poem: “The world is full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.”
To this day the sentiment often comes to mind––it pretty much wraps up how she feels about life in general.
She writes faction––fictional adventures happening in factual locations––ones that didn't happen, but could have.
Her illustrated stories often take place on the shores of Little Traverse Bay and Lake Charlevoix in Northern Michigan. Others happen in the Northwest and the Northeast where she's been known to ride the rails coast-to-coast rather than fly.
The author has written speeches, and tributes, as well as a commercial copy for brochures, booklets, and packaging. Since junior high school, she has sent award winning poems and letters to the rich and famous––some have replied.
One was delivered in the middle of a current history class by special delivery. It was from a sitting president of the United States of America. Another she particularly treasures, is from First Lady Barbara Bush, who commented on their mutual love of the twelve volume 1937 children's books––My Book House. The set, enhanced with beautiful colored illustrations, holds hundreds of stories written by famous authors. She credits the volumes––a gift from her grandmother––as inspiration for the illustrated books she's in the process of creating today.
In the future she hopes to write historical fiction for children based on her research and recollections. “What they learn,” she says, “in a pleasurable way, is long remembered.”
Her most recent work includes: (A) The Love Box Series–– Love Boxes: A Love Story from Northern Michigan to Points Beyond, Love Boxes 2: The Vacation, Love Boxes 3: The Twilight Zone, and Love Boxes 4: The Bay View Cottage. (B) The Paradise Trilogy––Paradise: A Love Story from Petoskey to Harbor Springs, Paradise 2: A Love Story from Cross Village to Harbor Springs, Paradise 3: A Love Story from Harbor Springs to Sausalito. Each of the seven books is complete or can be enjoyed sequentially.
Galt's love of genealogy, history, music, art, antiques, and old house restoration is reflected in her fantasies. She draws from this, as well as from her memories of growing up in Northern Michigan and spending summer vacations at the family cottage.
