Blown away! That’s what I am after reading Master of Umbra! The second book in the Valhalla series is just brilliant, and I thought it couldn't get better after reading Master of Miasma (book 1). Let nothing take away from book 1, though, because it sets the scene needed for Umbra to work as well as it does and you have to read it first.

Ewan, Eagle clan chief, possesses the kind of strength that drives a story, and yet has an astounding moral core one completely falls for (astounding, because, come on, he’s meant to be a berserker!!!). Yes, reader, you will LOVE Ewan! And you will wonder a bit about his side-kick Gunn…

Deliah has a terrible past and is lost until the Eagle clan brings her into the fold, but, boy, does she cause waves to rise and crash against those walls of darkness and muscle!

When Emma and Macala from Miasma join with the larger-than-life characters in Umbra, know sparks are about to become infernos. The Eagles and Ravens are kin…can they work together to defeat the real enemy, the Wolf clan???

You will love the ancient legends and histories brought to life, and the amazing and imaginative settings. Mostly, in my opinion, you will love the author’s brilliant imagery; this is poetry on every page.

The answer lies in Master of Skadi…and I cannot wait to find out what happens!

5 stars! Well deserved. 5 stars for the entire series! Well done, Poppet!

Master of Umbra is the second book in the Valhalla Series. This book was published in May 2013.

Deliah is on the run from an abusive man. Thinking she is fairly safe for the time being, her main frustration is getting her cat, Bella, down from a tree.
When she is approached by a stranger offering her help with Bella, Deliah finds herself under the man's spell.
Suddenly, she finds herself in the dark Scottish Highlands adopted into the Eagle Clan. For the first time in her life, Diliah feels like she has found a real home, a place where she belongs. She is able to learn a part of her heritage and begins to fall in love with the leader of the clan- a wicked man named Ewan.
Things become confusing when Diliah finds they are on the brink of war, and she must train in preparation, although she doesn't have much time to learn, and she is mostly in the dark about everything.
To make matters worse, another arrogant alpha male arrives with a major chip on his shoulder. Gunn believes that his duty will be to marry Deliah. He resents this prophesy because he sees it as an end to his freedom. Deliah learns however, that there are other partners she can marry and the choice is hers entirely.
Deliah's childhood as an orphan, in and out of foster homes, and then the abusive relationship she ultimately escaped from, has her hyper sensitive to things, especially since she is still so unfamiliar with the Eagle Clan's ways.
Intrigue abounds as Ewan schemes and negotiates to try and keep Deliah and the clan safe from their enemies. Deliah's training is especially imaginative.
As time passes, Gunn becomes less offensive and shows signs of softening toward Deliah. But, Deliah and Ewan are having a very hard time keeping their feelings for each other at bay.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I received the book from Poppet for an honest review. I have heard from reading other reviews that it is a good idea to read the first book before reading this one, and it is always a good idea to start at the beginning of a series. But, I had no problems understanding this novel without having read the first one. I do want to go back and catch up now, however.
This author is very talented. The imagery is phenomenal. Part fantasy, part paranormal romance, with some action and adventure mixed with danger and intrigue. Deliah is no shrinking violet. She speaks her mind, fights when she must, yet she is damaged, flawed and fragile as well.
Ewan has a wicked sense of humor, and his use of the double entendre was hilarious. I just loved him. Gunn wasn't my favorite character at first, but he redeems himself in the end.
This was just an amazingly absorbing story. I was drawn into this fantasy world and forgot all about my worries and stress and escaped reality for awhile. I highly recommend this novel for lovers of fantasy, mythology, paranormal, and romance novels. This is an author I will follow from now on. Very well done.

First off OMG,OMG,OMG,OMG!!!!!!Wow!!How does Poppet keep doing this?!!Of this series I thought Master of Miasma was my favorite but let me just say that Master Of Umbra tops that book which is Amazing because Master Of Miasma is totally BRILLIANT!!Master Of Umbra takes place in Scotland which is very fitting because The eagle clan are a bunch of BAD ASS dudes!!They personify the Berserker legends.Ewan,Deliah and Gunn are caught in a triangle that is not welcomed by either of the trio.Their story is gripping to say the least!!Macala and Emma are also thrown into the mix and man oh man does all hel(yes I know how I spelled hel and to understand why you must read the Gods and Thurs books!!) break loose!!This book is very intense in the most delightful way,the adrenaline starting ripping through my veins on the first page and continued to flow freely long after the last page was read!!Poppet continually keeps you on your toes and guessing what happens next is impossible. On top of it all is the richness of Norse Myth that Poppet imbues us with so that we come away with such love for the gods of old. It's as if she was born with the knowledge imprinted onto her memories. This is a book to be devoured eagerly,You have the drama of a dire situation that leads to war,the love story of the characters and the Kick Ass giants who are gods and so very much more!!Added into it is Poppets humor which ranks right up there in the genius category.Poppet's books are not just words to be read and discarded, they are outstanding bits of knowledge to be absorbed and stored for a lifetime!!This is a story that must be read!!But I must warn you,Poppet's books are highly addictive!!Thank you Poppet, for sharing your genius with us!!

I've been reading Poppet books for a long time now, and love the authors way with words, and her creative gift of wrapping a reader into a story line. The connection to her characters is addictive and intense, this story has literally left me speechless. I read the story when I first woke this morning, and ended it in tears that I couldn't describe, except to say I was totally fulfilled and at peace.

This story is one with such a deep meaning, and it falls back into some familiar territory with other stories/series by the same author. Deliah is one tough chick, she's been through hell (hel) literally. She is thrown into a world of realms and clans of Eagles, Ravens and Wolf, that collide at every breathe. Take the journey with Deliah to finding all the delicious secrets and loves. Ewan is such a delicious character, that I want one of him for a Christmas present-all bound in red ribbons, yet I'm torn because the of the other characters, Gunn, Adam...etc, they're just frosty hunks of giants for me.

Deliah's journey takes place at the same time with Book One, The Master of Miasma-the background story of Macala and Emma, but it also does extremely well as a stand alone story too. I am so looking forward to book three in the series.

I was in tears by the end. The possibilities of love and the depths it takes you too is an incredible journey. Poppet did an amazing job. Definitely a 5 star review, more if it was an available option. Must read to fully understand where I'm coming from, recommend to all.

This is my new 'favorite' Poppet story!!!

It looks just like a gnome's underworld tunnel, the length of it arched and smooth with the same black ice effect as the room I woke up in. Except instead of lights, or torches, approximately every four meters stands a thick column of yellow quartz which is internally lit, imbuing the channel with a sickly sulfuric glow.

I started this book with hopes that I could lose myself. I wanted to fall down the rabbit hole and venture into another world. To say that I found it, would be an understatement. This story thrust me into a world of mythical beings and a place that Poppet described so vividly, I never wanted to leave.

I have always been fascinated by the world of mythology and often find myself reaching out for anything to read that deals with it. When I had originally started reading Master of Umbra, I hadn’t realized that I would be getting told a story based around Norse Mythology. It was a hook, line and sinker moment for me. Poppet had me under her spell with her writing and her ability to blow my mind with her story telling. I could envision Poppet sitting around a campfire telling this story captivating her audience with her ability to invoke the imagination.

Dias has stepped up in the underworld. It's that, or I've just been summoned by the devil. So much for the 'life screw up' chat with a spiritual guide type, this is straight to the flogging and chewing on decomposed intestines.

When this story begins the reader meets a woman by the name of Deliah, a woman on the run from an evil being. As she is trying to retrieve her one trusted friend, a cat by the name of Arrabella, she meets a man by the name of Ewan. She soon finds out that trusting this man will take her in to his world of Berserkers, where he is master and ruler. Scared to death and unsure of whether her mind is playing tricks on her or if she has died and is now in hell. She begins to see that there is more to this world and to her then meets the eye. When she finally begins to accept her surroundings, Ewan becomes more than just the only man she feels safe with.

His fingers play the xylophone with my nerve endings while he thunders the storm to my heart, lightning bolts of delirium titillating my pores, the pleasure so intense it makes my skin ripple cold.

I am going to say right now, if I could have sex the way that these two do and not end up in the emergency room, I would. Oh my, is about the only word I could use because my mind was reeling. When this man says “I can’t go easy”, yeah, he really means that, Deliah becomes his rag doll and he becomes her pin cushion. Seriously, HOT!

When Deliah is initiated in to the clan, she is given her vision and in that vision she has to make a choice. She has to choose between two men, Ewan and a man named Gunn. Gunn makes it very clear that he wants nothing to do with Deliah, but with Deliah’s sarcasm and quick wit, Gunn begins to crumble. I was very torn between who Delilah should pick. I was partial to Ewan but when Gunn begins to show himself, I was beginning to wonder if he may be a good match for Deliah. In the end I was shocked to find what happens and was satisfied with who she ended up with.

This story was fantastic. There was more to this story then just the love that develops between the characters. This story is about the heritage of the Valhalla, how they came to be and the war that is about to emerge. I am dying to read the next book. I need to know how these characters survive and what their story becomes. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to get thrown into a different world

One does not use words like "wonderful" to describe this book. Bad-ass and hypnotizing? Hell yes! Pretty words don't work for MASTER OF UMBRA. The heroine is all kinds of awesome--strong yet compassionate, flawed yet growing, broken yet healing. And the alpha males, specifically Ewan, in the story? Holy hell. Captivating doesn't even cut it.

Beyond the characters, who were extremely well-developed, what impressed me the most was the author's highly original plot-line/setting and the creative word-crafting. Set mostly in a deep, dark mountain in the Scottish highlands was so cool. The imagery completely created the visuals I needed in my mind for such a dynamic setting. And Poppet's creative way of using the English language both surprised and fascinated me.

The central plot, the romance, had me on the edge of my proverbial seat (because I actually read the majority of it snuggled deep in my covers). At one point, I screamed Nooooooooo! (In my mind, of course, as I didn't want to wake the whole house.) I was riveted by Deliah's struggle to make sense of her new world and her ever-growing desire to finally find and feel rooted to her new home. The subplot with the central villain is ongoing, which was the only point that had me feeling dissatisfied, wanting more. We never actually meet him, which I was yearning to do. Of course, this could be Poppet's crafty way of making us read on to the next book coming out in December. You sly fox, Poppet. However, there was a definitely satisfying resolution to the romance. Whew! I found some of the explanations of the back story with the Norse gods a bit lengthy. Other than that, I was utterly, totally hooked. The fact that I couldn't stop reading until, well, way past my bedtime, nearly saluting the break of dawn, tells you something.

I would highly recommend this book for paranormal romance lovers, specifically those drawn to bad-ass alpha males who rule with an iron fist but a gentle heart. I'll definitely be reading the other books in this series.

The third and final installment of The Valhalla Series Master of Skadi is indeed a treasure.Surpassing the first two books by leaps and bounds, which is saying a lot because the first two books were Outstanding.Bringing together Emma and Macala,Deliah and Ewan and Lara and Leug,Master of Skadi is an Epic culmination of the Valhalla series. This book is wrought with raw emotion, the likes of witch had my heart in a vice grip.Leug aka Loki has a terrible reputation for being evil and a trickster when in fact he is the exact opposite and it takes the love of his soul mate Lara to open everyone's eyes to the truth,I had been waiting for this book to come out for weeks and when the 21st of December(the release date of this final installment) rolled around I could hardly contain myself. When I finally got my hands on this book I read it non stop until life got in the way. Then a few hours later I was back at it until I had read the last page.I'm never the same after reading one of Poppet's books. They all effect me in different ways but I am always left with a feeling of richness deep within my soul.Mid way through I decided that I wanted to live inside this book for the rest of eternity. As usual the research that Poppet does for her books is evident and if I wasn't already a fan of Norse Mythology I would be now.Even being a fan I still managed to learn so much more about the Norse gods that I had not a clue about before.By the time I finished reading this book I was an emotional wreck with eyes so puffy from crying for so many different reasons that my vision is blurry writing this review. This book is an absolute treasure and must be read by everyone!!A cornucopia of wonderful surprises await you within the pages of this literary gem.

Poppet asked me a couple of weeks ago to read the second book of the Valhalla Series. Not having read the first one, I thought I would be lost, but I was wrong.
What I liked about Poppet’s writing is that she really make her pages easy to read.
Master of Umbra has a bit Norske mythology mixed with something else. It’s different, it’s really well developed characters, and really good story line with all it’s plots.
I won’t say that I fall in love with Ewan, he’s so not my type of guy, and for some reason, I liked Gunn more. I guess it’s a first impression thing.
The story had me hooked, and that is what a story should do.

Now, what I didn’t like about Master of Umbra. There are mistakes and I don’t know if Poppet had a proof reader, if so, she/he missed a lot of words, awkward phrases, etc. Another thing, this story contains way too much swearing. Although I don’t mind swearing in a novel, authors should use the cussing sparingly. Too much of a good thing, isn’t good, and I guess it’s the same principle with swearing. It did put me off the book a lot. In some pages, we see back story. It was a bit boring, but Poppet changed it, just before I wanted to put the book down.

Poppet, I got a bit of mixed feelings on this one. I can’t say it’s good for me to buy the next part and I can’t say it’s bad that I won’t buy the next book.
I think you did a great job overall, it’s just that I didn’t like a couple of things that totally put me off.
I’m giving Poppet a 3.5 stars.
It was good, but not my favorite.
The one thing I can say, is wow, what a beautiful cover.

Blown away! That’s what I am after reading Addictive Gloamshade! The second book in the Valhalla series is just brilliant, and I thought it couldn't get better after reading Nightshade (book 1). Let nothing take away from book 1, though, because it sets the scene needed for Gloamshade to work as well as it does and you have to read it first.

When Emma and Macala from Nightshade join with the larger-than-life characters in Gloamshade, know sparks are about to become infernos. The Eagles and Ravens are kin … can they work together to defeat the real enemy, the Wolf clan???

The answer lies in Addictive Rimeshade … and I cannot wait to find out what happens!

5 stars! Well deserved. 5 stars for the entire series! Well done, Poppet!
