I try not to be a total buzzkill when it comes to fanservice, recognizing that I have out-aged the target demographic for a lot of manga by more years than I would care to either count or admit.

That being said, sometimes the prurient aspects of a series really get in the way of my enjoyment of it and that’s where this volume finds itself, despite having some quite strong bits within it.

And it’s not like this hasn’t been a breast-forward series in the past; there’s even a fairly-dumb-yet-amusing gag here where Nobukuni keeps running up to Sasaki at increasing speeds and eventually inertia takes over.

It’s just really awkward because, even more than most manga of this ilk, this stuff feels crammed in for the sake of the mangaka and the story’s excuse is even more wafer thin than typical.

The first section is about Nobukuni’s gyaru friend, Airi, and her unexpected friendship with the meek Keira, a member of the student council. And their mutual crush on Nijima, whose main claim to fame this volume is asking Airi to get naked in front of several onlookers.

I’ll go ahead and spoil the part that drives me nuts - this actually works and Airi eventually does pose nude and the indulgence of the art here is downright creepy. It’s just… weird, even if the story is at great pains to paint this as something more important than said indulgence. I definitely do not propose censorship, but this is just not for me.

And the worst part is that this arc is otherwise really good. Keira is half-Japanese and half-African American, which makes her wholly unique and explains her incredible shyness.

So when she and Airi truly connect and even discuss consent and then her jealousy causes her to flat-out slut shame Airi instead? That’s more gripping than anything this series has ever pulled off. And the way Keira and Nobukuni are alike in their shyness, yet different, is well done.

And I love that Sasaki has turned out to be basically as hopeless as Nobukuni; his friends dunking on him for creeping her social media and coming to the utterly baseless conclusion she has a boyfriend is amusing, then even better when his idea of suggestive photos involves seeing a bit of clavicle.

When our leads attempt to make plans over summer, yes, it’s the inevitable beach trip next volume, the crazy just keeps upping itself. Nobukuni’s inscrutable thought process that leads to immediate jealousy wouldn’t be that interesting, but the dead eyed glare she gives Sasaki is absolutely hysterical.

While the jealousy angle is not particularly new, I love how all this is in full view of many of their classmates. Being privy to the viewpoint of the class changes this from a couple chuckles to a great comedy bit as they all sub in for the readership.

I do appreciate that Nobukuni’s hopeless self-esteem is her real problem. There’s nothing wrong with her size, yet she thinks she’s huge in comparison to others. That sort of self-sabotage rings incredibly true amidst a story that frequently doesn’t. Her shopping anxiety chapter manages to be a bit more than just fanservice, with a great cliffhanger for next time.

3.5 stars - there are some things here I really like; my problem is just with the things that I really don’t. There are ways to have your cheesecake and eat it too, but this volume takes it further than I’m personally comfortable with.

I really liked that this volume focused a bit more on Airi since I’ve grown fond of her character. I have mixed emotions about her friendship with the student committee member so I hope that she stays more of a side/minor character. I found Sasaki’s behavior in this volume to be hilarious because he really is just as clueless as Nobukuni is when it comes to their budding relationship and how to act in relations to each other. It’s oddly adorable.
With the way things ended in this volume, I’m very curious to see how things go in the next volume since it involves a beach trip.
