A few years ago I started a personal reflection of what leadership is and was developing a concept of leadership as serving those we lead, those we report to and our customers, then I stumbled across this course by James C. Hunter. This course is a must read / listen by everyone. Why everyone and not just leaders? One of the tenants he mentions is the fact that everyone has an opportunity to lead at various points in their lives - even if they don't hold an actual role as a leader. This is so very true. In this course Mr. Hunter places in context the essentials of servant based leadership which should be utilized on a daily basis to incorporate these traits into our lives.
I listened to 1 of 4 of the CDs which comprise the audiobook. Hunter made a few good points but nothing earth-shattering or profound, and I just didn't find his anecdotes funny or helpful. Hopefully I can find a more useful resource on Servant Leadership.
This is actually a lecture, but I found it to be so incredibly eye-opening and helpful. It really is common-sense stuff, but Hunter gives it a new perspective - using the Golden Rule as a leadership style. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to up their leadership game.
Timeless and practical wisdom that I plan to read and remind myself yearly. It’s not about learning the things, it’s about putting them into practice in your daily life.
Lots of leadership golden nuggets here. Here's a strong piece of advice from the book: "Leadership development and character development are synonymous, you improve one by improving the other."
Review: Basically a recorded set of lectures. Marginally inspiring. Covers the ideas and motivation behind Servant Leadership and gives examples and stories to support the principles and concepts. James Hunter is passionate and a good speaker, however I found some of his stories and jokes a little thin. The examples tended not to really dive into the challenges of implementing these ideas and I found he concluded his points too quickly for me to feel like they were made. I'm a big advocate of SL and think there is a lot of meaningful discussion to be hand about applying it in today's modern, capitalist business world; I just don't think Hunter really explored the ideas and challenges that deeply.
James Hunter attempts here to summarize twenty-five years of studying and teaching the principles of servant leadership in a single overview program.
He has a gift for using visual imagery to explain abstract concepts such as demonstrating kindness and discipline as a leader.
I was taken with his ideas of serving as a leader by meeting the legitimate needs of all stakeholders (owners/investors/members/employees/volunteers), how to determine those needs, set measurable goals in meeting them and soliciting feedback to ensure those goals and needs are met.
This was overall a great book. The principles contained in here will bring you a long way to being an excellent leader. What better example than Jesus Christ? I would have given it four stars, but there was a bit of repetitiveness, and I felt like it really could have been shorter. One other issue was that it did not contain many direct examples of Servant Leadership.
A great convincing book that shows how important Servant Leadership is. The author delivered the concept in a conversational manner making it easy and simple to understand.
