One of my favourite books. My mothers family came from the area south of Coniston and were called Cornthwaite ...like the village .They were stone masons and built many of the dry stone walls in what was once Westmoreland. Reading this book and its description of the landscape is about as close as I can get to them ....my Gran Kath Cornthwaite ,my great Auntie Min ......all long gone but the walls are still there
I have always liked Harry Griffin's marvellous writing. This collection of vignettes are drawn from his half century of writing Guardian 'Country Diary' columns. It ranges far and wide over his beloved fells, and offers glimpses of a life lived to the full in Cumbria. Stories include everything from rescuing crag fast sheep to long dead Lakeland characters.
