Blessed Curses

Rate this book
Though he’s a sorcerer with a talent for creating blessings, David can do very little with any other magic. He works the night shift for his cousin’s magical supply shop because he’s cursed—his brother did it when they were kids—and now people can’t stand to be near David since he inspires irrational fear. Many experts have tried to remove it, but the curse has proven completely binding. Then David meets Vaughn at his brother's wedding.

Vaughn works for the magical enforcers, picking apart complex curses and making sure sorcerers stay within the law. He has the ability to dampen magical effects around him and loves solving supposedly irreversible curses like David’s. He quickly develops a more personal interest in David. Despite the distance David attempts to keep between them, he finally realizes when Vaughn is injured on the job that he doesn’t want to stay away anymore. But what about the curse?

I read this blurb and just knew it would be my kind of story, I mean a cursed sorcerer and another one falling for him. But with a curse that literally repels people, what can ever come of it?

The very beginning had me falling in love with little David. I have kids very close in age, so the rivalry and jealousy that Todd had for his little brother was understandable and instead of fists these kids use magic. Havoc ensues.
The story then skips to the here and now, and honestly I would have loved to have seen a little of how difficult it was for David growing up and how he managed it all.
No one can stand to be near him for more than a little while, only Todd can touch him, just being in his vicinity elicits fear and dread in everyone. I can imagine it, school and family, but I would have liked to have been there with David for a little bit of that.
Vaughn Moore works for Arcana, he's an enforcer in the government agency responsible for magical accidents and crimes.
Vaughn's original interest in David is as the 'incurable' curse case, but as soon as they meet he finds he really likes David and develops a more personal interest in him.

David is a little suspicious and fearful, understandable if you think about his life, this quote sort of sums it up :
“If I say you can kiss me, and you do, and I love it, and then it never happens again, will I spend the rest of my life trying to get that feeling back?”

There is a side story that Vaughn is working on and again I would have loved to hear more about his cases and his job, but the novella length limits that, but the main focus was Vaughn trying to gain David's trust and friendship and maybe more.

David is trying to protect himself and his feelings, which in his situation I can understand, he is afraid to hope, so he is a bit prickly and reticent with Vaughn even when he really loves the time he spends with him.

Vaughn calls him 'Hedgehog' in a loving way and it's fitting, but I have to say Vaughn is a wonderful, patient, kind and understanding man.
As much as I felt for David, it was Vaughn who stole my heart .
I don't want to say anymore and give away anything, I wish I had been able to spend more time in this interesting world and with these men and their family and friends.

Uninspired fluff with little world building; the "cursed" MC, David, was a petulant child. I was never sure what Vaughn saw in him. There wasn't enough tension in the story to make it interesting, and the last chapter came out of nowhere. Steam content was medium with one more explicit scene.

There isn't much to say about this book-- brilliant premise with an execution that fell short. The entire book had a very unpolished, lackluster atmosphere about it.

The premise had inconceivable potential which was what really made this book stand out to me at first; however, I felt that there was little development on the base idea (which we already understood from the blurb). He had a wicked curse... then it was broken (anti-climax much?). The curse was so juicy I somehow fooled myself into believing that there would be even juicier tidbits and plot twists awaiting me.

Additionally, although Madeleine Ribbon surely has potential, her writing was indistinct and bland and various other details like pacing and world building could have been better.

However, in spite of that, Blessed Curses was quite a sweet and enjoyable read. The romance was quite pleasant to read about (it was more explicit than I had imagined though [I had imagined a rather cutesy tween romance, I'm afraid. Don't ask why]... So yes, it was a fun read, though not one I'd completely recommend or revisit.

NOTE: 2 stars means OK . I've never felt the need to clarify, but with the whole GR kerfuffle, I suppose I should try and accommodate *eyeroll*.

I'm not that big a fan of fantasy in my m/m romance books, but Blessed Curses was an okay read. I could handle the fantasy aspect and it didn't bother me at all; I even found the idea of the curse David was suffering from quite interesting.

Unfortunately, the romance did nothing for me. The characters were a little boring and their interaction way too sweet and sappy. This might be a good read for fantasy fans that like oversweet relationships.

This is my fourth book by Madeleine Ribbon and I really like her writing style and her stories. this one was no exception.

here we got enough time for the relationship development ... and it was so well done

although I would have loved it if there would have been more time at the end. on the whole this book was a great read and I would love to read more in this world

This was a cute story about David who was cursed as a boy by his jealous brother to inspire irrational fear in anyone or anything that gets close to him. He’s lived twenty years with this curse in which only his brother could withstand his company for more than a few minutes. At his brother’s wedding, he meets Vaughn, the bride’s best friend, who works as an enforcer at Arcana, which is like the police for all types of magical crimes and such. Vaughn loves puzzles so he loves breaking curses. When he meets David with the intention of helping to break his curse, it’s lust at first sight instead. David’s lived years feeling lonely so he has a hard time thinking Vaughn wants him for more than just as a chance to cure the ‘Impossible Kid’ as Arcana has nicknamed David. To be with David, Vaughn has to prove his love but in the process will he be able to cure David?

I’ve got to say, I absolutely adored David. The life he’s lived is so sad and lonely, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. To live decades with a curse that not only affects others but you as well must be brutal and because of that he’s a bit jaded and confused when Vaughn shows interest in him. At the same time, he’s this cute little nerd that has so many layers to him. It’s hard for me to describe Vaughn. I couldn’t clearly visualize the way he looks but he has a strong personality that seems genuine. I loved the way he handled David and how he tries to woe him. I loved the endearment he calls David, it’s so cute.

The story deals with mainly Vaughn and David tentatively starting a relationship and how they manage to get around David’s curse. Vaughn was born with a suppression power that enables him to suppress anything that seems harmful to Vaughn. There’s also a few side conflicts such as how Vaughn tries to break David’s curse but also deals with someone breaking into magical practitioner shops to steal a powerful herb so there’s a bit of a mystery regarding that. All together it is a little overwhelming and sometimes things go slightly too fast but it’s still a fun read and I loved the way the author handled the conflict revolving around curing David’s curse. I think it fit the story very well.

While I enjoyed the book very much, I missed the fact that more time wasn’t spent on Vaughn physically looking for answers to the curse. I wish the story was just a tad bit longer because I would have loved to see Vaughn and David out as a couple and not just secluded in their homes. To experience them in a more public setting would have legitimized the feelings between the two for me.

All in all, this was a light, fun read that had me laughing at times and feeling bad for the characters at others. I loved the world the author created because she has a smooth writing style that made it fascinating but not too confusing. I hope there’s more to come of either Vaughn and David or other characters within this world because it would be amazing to explore it further. Definitely recommended.

A sweetly romatic tale of magic, and love with a nice splash of angst and longing. Nothing too heavy or melodramtic. A perfect book for my day spent sick in bed.

I believe this is the first book by Madeleine Ribbon that I've read. I was excited about this book because it has a great premise -- a man cursed by his brother at a young age who repulses everyone and everything around him until a man who excels at breaking curses and has his own natural resistance to others' magic is the first man who can get close enough to him to try to remove it. And indeed, that is what immediately drew me into the story when I picked it up. We first see David as a young boy. He's completely jealous of his older brother Todd (by one year). Todd has more magic than David; David can only do Blessings, not Curses and Charms like Todd and just about everyone else in the magical world. And Todd has friends. When Todd goes away to a magical camp one summer where David cannot follow, David finds that despite what his brother told him, Todd's friends are happy to play with him. But when Todd comes home to see David with his friends he get's jealous, and in a typical move towards his younger brother, he curses him. Only this time David tries to protect himself with a blessing and the combination of the magic creates what will become known among the magical world as the impossible curse, and David as The Impossible Kid.

David feels the curse himself. He's uncomfortable, full of fear and feels the creepy crawly feeling across his whole body. But that doesn't compare to how other people feel in his proximity. The closer they get the more they want to run away, the more they're afraid of him. And because of that impossibility of touch and interaction with all except for his brother Todd who is immune (as the curse caster, and subsequently has devote his life to his care because of his guilt), David has lived a life devoid of physical affection, even from his own parents. Those who take the time to brave their discomfort and get to know David fall in love with him. He's shy and awkward around people because of his curse and his lack of experience relating to others.

David still has his magic and though he feels it's rather lackluster in relation to so many other people's gifts, he admits that he has a real talent for Blessings. It is when he's fulfilling his promise to be in attendance of his brother Todd's wedding (and to bless the cake for the couple) that he meets Vaughn. He's confident, sexy, intelligent and talented and David has no idea what Vaughn sees in him -- other than the challenge of breaking his curse. Nevertheless, Vaughn can't seem to stay away from David. While it started out as a professional interest, Vaughn finds that the man himself is more intriguing than the horrible curse he bears. Getting David, a man who has never received any kind of positive attention from another handsome gay man, to realize that David is worth more than his curse looks to be almost as challenging as finding a counter to the curse itself. But the more time that Vaughn spends getting to know David -- wooing him in baby steps the whole way -- the more important it is to him to find a way to keep David for good.

I liked this novella but I think that it mostly only kept my interest because of it's length. It's short enough that when my initial interest, which covered the first few chapters and maybe the first 25% of the book, started to wane there wasn't a whole lot left to read. I won't say that it turned me off in any way, but I did feel like the book stalled a bit and it never really regained the magic even until the end. The premise of the book is really interesting, but once the initial meeting between David and Vaughn at the wedding finished they went into a long and slow courtship, because of David's fear of forging a connection with someone who he believed would ultimately be turned away by the curse. It made sense for the characters, but it slowed down the pace somewhat. That bulk of the story was really only driven by the internal conflict. And I hate to say it, but for me that really slow courtship which was much more like friendship killed the passion. I'm not sure why I reacted this way because I usually am a big fan of the slow burn. I think that's why I slowly lost some interest in their relationship -- I didn't feel the "burn" in the slow burn.

There is a side plot throughout the story. Over the months of their courtship is a small mystery keeping the two on their toes. Someone, what seems to be a scrawny kid, is trying to break in and steal a blessed plant from magical shops around town and is quite good at escaping capture. The plant in question is only used for suppressing magic, which leads David to believe that someone might be cursed similarly to him and hoping to stop it's effects. Vaughn, who works for the Magical Enforcement department of Arcana, the magical government, is involved with the case. This side plot could have remedied the problems that I had, diverting the focus to something else to drive the plot forward. But, ultimately while the conclusion was interesting in it's own way I didn't feel like it carried the story through those parts.

On the whole I just didn't find many surprises with this story. It is good for what it is despite the few problems that I had with it -- the premise is wonderful and I liked the characters quite a lot. David is cute in his geeky, online gaming and need-to-be-rescued kind of way, while Vaughn is charming and dashing, popular and sexy and loyal and caring. But after the initial introduction to the story and between the characters, I pretty much had the story already figured out.

This would be a good book for those of you looking for something not too involved, that won't take up a whole lot of your day and is a relaxing and light book to read. It's heartwarming in a knight-in-shining-armor kind of way. But if you're looking for something more intense or more exploration of the magical world and a deeper study of the characters, this might not be for you. Though I enjoyed the experience, I fell into the latter camp.

Sweet and fluffy yet utterly uninspiring. I loved the scenario of plot but thought it was poorly timed and executed.

Spoilerish?? Maybe...

Vaughn was a big question mark for me... He’s a magic enforcer and figuring out and reversing curses is like his thing... like literally... I know this because it’s stated in the blurb and many times in the book... many... and yet he never tried to break or reverse the curse. Shit it’s like 3 months of dating before he even remembers to ask permission to look into David’s files and another 2 or 3 before he actually tries to look into it at all...

Meh...

I was also disappointed that the rash of burglaries was so nearly wrapped up and over with without a big hitch other than Vaughn getting hurt. I loved Cole but thought the big events in this book all ended up being rather uneventful.

I had just noticed this book and was pleasantly surprised when my friend lent me her copy. I enjoyed this story about Daniel who was cursed as a child and Vaughn who worked for the magical enforcers. The heat level for most of the book was rather low and I liked that they really got to know each other before sex was on the table. I liked how Vaughn was patient with David and never gave up on him despite how prickly he could be. I felt sorry for David and was glad that he was able to get his HEA in the end. I also liked the side story of Cole and hope the author writes his story soon. Overall a really good book.

I loved this story! A sweet romance with two really great characters. Blessed Curses is a paranormal story with magic it’s something just a little bit different and I’m sure that’s one of the reasons why I liked it so much. It also had all the elements of what I like to look for in a romance, a gorgeous guy sweeping that sweet, shy, and somewhat awkward young man off kilter and watching that guy be at a total loss as to what to do with the attention.

Vaughn works for the magical enforcement squad, he investigates the crimes that involve magic. He loves puzzles and the biggest magical puzzle of them all is David. David has a curse that his brother Todd accidentally put on him when they were young and no one has been able to undo or even figure out. David meets Vaughn at the wedding of his brother Todd and Vaughn’s best friend Kelly there is an instant attraction but Vaughn has trouble convincing David that he’s interested in him and not just his curse. David’s magically abilities are limited but giving blessings he’s really good at unfortunately the rest of his life isn’t as good. David’s curse makes it impossible for anyone to get close to him or be around him for any length of time the only person that has been able to is Vaughn. Vaughn has the ability to suppress the magic David sends off.

I loved these two together and their love story was beautiful. It was a slow burn which was perfect for their situation and it made me fall head over heals for Vaughn he’s such a patient and understanding character and I couldn’t help but love David’s sweet and cautious ways and feel heartbroken for what he’s had to endure.

This story had me from the beginning to the very last page, I didn’t want to see it end.

I finished this book a few days ago. It was a 3 star read for me. The book started off very strong for me. I loved young David so much. I was disappointed when the book jumped to an adult David. i felt so much was left out of the story. I wanted to know how David felt when they were trying to lift the curse. Why was Todd immune to the curse? Couldn't that tell them how to cure it? Why did Todd decide to live with David? And why did they live in a run down house? That made no sense to me.

The crime plot was incomplete as well. So much was missing from Cole's story. Who was his father? What was in the letter from his great aunt that changed his outlook on life and attitude? Did he stay in touch with the guys?

I wanted to know more about Vaughn's background. I think Vaughn and David were great for each other, but something was missing. The story felt rushed at times, especially at the end. I also think the storyline or plot was missing several sentences. It just felt disjointed in spots.

Don't get me wrong. This was a good book, it could have been even better.

This was my first book by this author and it won't be my last.

This really felt like a first draft because the idea behind the plot was interesting but then it was just a succession of telling and not showing with two MCs really bland, especially David who had no personality (his point of view was seriously ridiculous at times).
The only good thing was the beginning when he was a child, after that it was just flat and sickening with all these sappy feelings.
There was no information on the hate the non-magics seemed to have towards those having magic, no explanation at why children could go around cursing people (like it had never happened before and this society doesn't have control over kids manipulating dangerous spells). And I still don't understand why David didn't punch his brother for making his life a real hell, this would have made the guy looking a little more real.

An ok read with very interesting premises and plot-lines.

The concept and the *plot device* of this book was very interesting. David was afflicted by the mangled curse, brought on by his brother when David was eight and the brother was ten. The curse ended up making everybody around him felt uneasy and agitated to the point where they cannot stand being around him. He had seen *A LOT* of experts, researchers and healers, all failed in breaking the curse. So David was living with this affliction for twenty years when chapter 1 began.

The writing was ok but I think Ms. Ribbon still finding her footing in her writing style. The pacing felt a bit off in the middle and I was perplexed by some of the decisions and behaviors of the MCs. The world buildings felt slightly... uneven and far less than complete but it was enough to frame the story.

I was wondering about the applications of David's curse though... It seemed that it would be perfect to use him to unbalance the suspects before interrogations.

David here was somewhat difficult for me to warm up to. His predicaments lead him to develop prickly personalities as a self-defense mechanism. It made him a pragmatic pessimist that quite lovable.

There were many time jumps which was kinda work in this book but when things came to blow, it made me wondered what did Vaughn do with his time away from David when he supposedly tried to undo the curse. Also, Vaughn was billed as a very good at picking apart curses but we never get to see him doing that.

For me, it was perplexing that Vaughn keep going through notes of other people and not examining David himself. There was no mentioning of what other people had tried to fix David's curse, seemingly no attempt at trying to dampening the effects or some such.

Overall, it was an ok read with some uneven patches here and there. I think it required some more polishing and maybe a few adjustments to be better.

My first book by Madeleine Ribbon and it was a very nice surprise! Hooked from the first line! I followed David to the fateful meeting with his jealous older brother. I couldn't help, but feel sorry for David and angry on his behalf or glad for him, which is a good thing, for me at least, since I like to be able to relate to the character and have at least some connection to them. Anyone who had older siblings and didn't get along with them could empathize with the poor boy, when said git of a brother cursed him. Temporarily I wondered if their mother should do more than just deal with the damage, she doesn't really punish Todd (fitting name!) for hurting his brother.

Now because of his brother’s thoughtless action, David has to deal with a curse that stuck and nobody beside his brother can stand to be close to him, or he close to them without experiencing angst, dread and other negative feelings. David never had friends or lovers and no enforcer or other magic user was able to help "The Impossible Kid", how he has been named by the researchers. All changes on his brother’s wedding day when David meets his sister in law's best friend Vaughn, who is part of the magical Enforcers that deal with different magical problems, mishaps and crimes. Sparks fly when they meet and Vaughn actually has a blessing that allows him to be close to David, without freaking out, running for the hills or just fainting. Lucky for David, Vaughn sees more in him than just a puzzle to solve.

It was a sweet story, with elements of hurt/comfort and parts that melted my heart, like David’s confession to Vaughn, about never having kissed anybody. I loved how patient and understanding Vaughn was and that they took their time to work towards a relationship. While the suspense didn't last and the story did move a bit sluggish in the middle, I got attached to the characters by that time and just wanted to see them have their happy ending. The story flows nicely and makes for an easy read, with well developed characters and sometimes heart melting dialogs. The one thing I was wondering is why David got along with Todd so well as a grown up. I mean basically Todd ruined his life and David didn't really blame him, considering the dreams he had about his own restaurant, having friends and someone to love.

Magic – virgin – first kiss – sorcerers – vulnerable – romantic - chivalry- asshole brother - HEA

When David Karakova - “Hedgehog” was eight years old, he wanted to go to the magic camp with his big brother, Todd. Todd was a year older and had a different kind of magic ability than David. His mom said that he was too young too, or so he was told. So he didn’t make it to camp that year. Todd had told him that his talents were for sissies. Big brothers, go figure. Todd was the epitome of an ass at such a young age.

In the world of the magical community, there are those who can throw the best of curses. And then there’s David. A loner, not by choice. He’s an enigma. People were afraid to be around him. They avoid him like the plague. Why, because of Todd’s infamous curse. Out of jealousy he cursed his brother. Over the next twenty years doctors as well as sorcerers have tried to find a cure to help David. But to no avail.

Vaughn Moore – Works for Arcana as a magic enforcer. He has the ability to dampen any magic that threatens him. His job is a stressful one, especially the current robberies, statue assault, and earthquakes. He sets out to solve the puzzle that no one else has yet to solve for the “Impossible Kid”. A knight in shining armor.

David and Vaughn meet at Todd’s wedding. They hit it off pretty good. But David is reluctant to start something with Vaughn due to this stupid curse. So they start off at a slow pace. While Vaughn takes his time wooing David, love sneaks up on them. Be still my heart.

This was a romantic read for me. I liked the way this story played out. Not having sex every other page was a BIG plus too. The pace was perfect. The “awww” moments were in all the right places for me. This was a nice Bingo choice. I have a few more of Madeleine’s books on the TBR shelf.

Building love and fostering hope

This was a beautifully crafted story that ignored the quick fix in favour of taking the time to build love and heal hurts.

David was cursed by his brother when they were young but the curse got mangled and no one can remove it. Vaughn is a curse breaker and is instantly intrigued by this man with the unbreakable curse. Upon meeting David, Vaughn is interested in not just the curse, but the man. He wants to get to know David and start up something more, curse or not. David is afraid of allowing the hope of a relationship into his life but bit by bit Vaughn's steadfastness breaks down walls. But the hope of breaking the curse is to much to even think of.

David and Vaughn are not an easy or instant relationship. Through trust and caring they slowly build a relationship with a good base. It is not without pitfalls though, but friends and family are there to help them through or knock sense into them. It is a relationship that builds a basis for more, but the focus remains on that build of love and trust. A slow and steady build of a read that gives love a chance.

Interesting

Really interesting story. The plot wasn't complex really in any way but it was good, if pretty basic.

Wish there was more to the world building. It touched on their universe, but not enough to get you into it too much which I thought was sad. The characters were a bit 2d but had enough depth that you could get into them.

David and vaughn's relationship was pretty flat which was disappointing. The reader never really gets to SEE growth. We just assume it has happened with the passage of time. Not good when the story basically revolves around their budding love.

All in all it was a good story (not great) that was stimulating enough to keep you going. You want to root for the MCs, especially david. I really felt for david. By the end you are happy that he is happy with Vaughn but they really have very little in the way of chemistry until close to the end.

Sweet but a little bland

I wanted to rate this 3 stars but that felt unfair since there’s no obvious flaws with this book. It’s technically good writing and has a pretty interesting plot. David and Vaughn are a sweet pair. Unfortunately, for some reason, there’s no real sense of emotion. Everything feels very remote and matter of fact. The only really lively scene occurs late in the book when Vaughn observes a minor character hurting himself. In that brief moment, I engaged more than I did over the entire story.

Nice but a litle monotone. Normally I enjoy the quiet books, but this had nothing that stood out much. I enjoyed the story while reading, but it's one of those books, that doesn't stay long on your mind after finishing. On the plus side - It was very sweet, so, when I'm going to re-read it in a while, I think, it will be as nice as it was now.

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

David is a sorcerer who is skilled at creating blessings, he has very little other magical abilities, but for David it isn't something he worries over. David has had to live with an unbreakable curse for twenty years ever since his brother, in a fit of childhood jealousy, cursed him, now as an adult no one can stand to be within ten feet of him before the fear drives them away. Vaughn works for the magical enforcers making sure sorcerers stay within the law and breaking curses, when his best friend offers him the opportunity to meet The Impossible Kid he jumps at the chance to take a look at the curse that has baffled everyone. Vaughn takes a more personal interest in David when he meets him but David put's distance between them, will David ever give Vaughn the chance to prove he is more than just a curse.

This is a great magic story that isn't magical cures but does have a magical love. David has lived his life knowing no one can get close to him, so when an enforcer who specializes in breaking curses shows an interest in him he can't believe it is for himself and not his curse. Vaughn is instantly attracted to David and because of his own birth blessing he can get close to David, but trying to convince David that he really wants him is hard. As the two become close Vaughn keeps looking into a solution to David's curse but his work is getting stressful and hunting for a thief might get dangerous.

This is a great story and although it is about magical people it isn't too fanciful, both men are wonderful and their relationship is taken slowly as David gets used to being close to someone. Although the story focus' on David and Vaughn's relationship and it's progress and ups and downs, it also gives us an insight into Arcana (where Vaughn works) but we only really get to see one case. I would have enjoyed seeing even more about the work the Arcana enforcers do but I enjoyed this little taster. I also really liked David and couldn't help feel sorry for him and his complete loneliness, but the happiness he discovers with Vaughn is really special. Vaughn's love for David becomes very clear to us when he finds a solution to David's curse, that was real love.

I recommend this to those that love great characters, magic, finding a love that you will do anything for, a great storyline and a wonderful ending.

4.5* Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

This was such a sweet, satisfying read! Poor David has lived his life with everyone (except his brother) afraid of him while also being afraid of himself. He’s seen every curse breaker and medic available and after years of attempting to find a solution, David finally gave up and just retreated further into his own company. The last thing he wants is to be attending a wedding with a large group of people that will never understand or tolerate his presence but its for his brother so he’ll just have to suffer through it. David is understandably surprised, however, when he meets Vaughn, a friend of the bride who works as a curse breaker. While suspicious of his motives at first, David develops an unexpected and unanticipated relationship with Vaughn that has him letting someone in for the first time since he was a child and may see him finding a way to his happily ever after.

Like I said, this was a really sweet story. I felt so bad for David yet despite the curse he was saddled with as a child, he’s still managed to build a life for himself. Granted it wasn’t the life he wanted or envisioned for himself but he still got by. Vaughn was also a great character; there were quite a few different sides to the man but his best quality was in sticking by David, even when David was trying to shove him away for ‘his own good’. There’s a bit of a side story included that deals with Vaughn’s job that added a nice undercurrent to the overall story line and it was interesting getting to see what he did for a living. There isn’t a lot of drama or angst to speak of over the course of the book but I found it wasn’t really necessary here, either. This was just a great story that dealt with the magical backlash to a kid that didn’t deserve it and getting to see him finally get his happy ending. The only complaint I have is that, for a book featuring magic users, I didn’t actually get to see much magic! I still enjoyed the story immensely, however, and I know I’ll read it again just for the characters themselves.

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

Dealing with the after effects of sibling rivalry gone wrong is the premise of Madeline Ribbon’s Blessed Curses. David has spent the majority of his life with a curse that makes people extremely uncomfortable. He is himself uncomfortable. Numerous sorcerers have tried to break it to no avail. David just lives with it, working nights blessing magical herbs for his cousin’s store. At his brother’s wedding David meets Vaughn. Vaughn’s birth blessing was for magical suppression. He barely feels David’s curse at all and really wants to get to know David better. A relationship between the two of them is certainly an uphill battle. Part of it is David’s prickly nature, he earns the nickname hedgehog, and part of it is Vaughn’s very heavy workload. When Vaughn visits David’s place exhausted and falls asleep he’s unable to suppress his reactions to David’s curse. Vaughn wakes up terrified and David breaks off the relationship insisting it will never work between them. It takes Vaughn weeks, and the completion of a case, to finally win David back. It’s not til then Vaughn is able to track down a possible work around for David’s incurable curse.

This novella was charming although it didn’t cause much of an emotional response. That doesn’t necessarily sound like a plus, but I occasionally find myself in need of a book that won’t intrude on my life. That’s not to say the story wasn’t well written and good, because it was. It’s a twist on modern society with some people having additional magical abilities. I liked the characters and the plot. There were a couple of instances I found some things to be a touch overly convenient, but the book worked on the whole and is certainly a nice book to read when you’ve got time to sit, but not time to devote to a book.

This starts off with something truly scary. An angry child lashing out with magic in a way that has lasting consequences. If my kids had magic things might have gone very differently when they were grounded.

I'll try not to get too detailed and spoil anything.

I thought David was a very understandable character. He had found a way to adapt to his circumstances and have some semblance of a life. And when the opportunity to try and change things comes about he is afraid of the risk. How could he possibly find peace again if he learns just what he is missing and then loses it?

And then there is Vaughn. I think I am in love with him. He is a former slut who makes no apologies for his past. He is ready for more in his life at this point. He is open, compassionate and very, very stubborn. What I like most about him is he never once ignores any difficulties he and David face. He confronts them honestly, with empathy for David always tempering any frustration he feels.

The relationship between the two men was outstanding, while the attraction between the two was immediate it was a long time before it was truly acted on. The problems the two face are never glossed over.

I loved the way the story was resolved. When Vaughn is offered a possible solution he doesn't jump on it right away. He takes some time to consider all risks and he realizes that he could wind up worse off than David if it doesn't work and they split up in the future. That just makes it more meaningful when he does take the risk.

If you are looking for a shorter book with a bit of magic and some truly enjoyable characters look no further and settle down to read.

This book was so much fun, which is great because it was a sad story. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but it’s true. This was a wonderful love story full of magic, curses, blessings and sacrifice.

David was as alone as you can get while still being surrounded by people. His magical strength lies in blessings and his brothers lies in curses. One silly childhood fight caused twenty years of isolation and constant fear and dread, for everyone. He was 8 years old when it happened and it hurt even his mother to touch him. My heart broke for him. I understood his prickly ways and his fear of allowing anyone close to him.

He couldn’t understand why Vaughn would want to be with him. David can’t believe he is anything more than a puzzle to be solved to Vaughn. Luckily, Vaughn is as persistent as he is charming and sexy.

Vaughn hasn’t had an easy life himself. He takes one look at David and is hooked. The more time he spends with David, the deeper he falls. All he has to do is convince the man who hasn’t been touched by anyone, except his brother, in twenty years that he is serious. It was beautiful.

Vaughn’s inexhaustible patience and compassion for David were amazing. He was so sensitive to David’s needs and fears. While he was willing to go at David’s pace, Vaughn knew what he wanted and he would not be moved. It was great when David finally realized that he was all that Vaughn wanted.

There were so many things that I enjoyed about this book. It had heart, charm, devotion, mystery, a bit of angst, sweetness, and two beautiful men falling in love. I loved it.

A really enjoyable read with a wonderful storyline. The only reason it didn't receive a 5 stars from me was because some of the dialogue confused me at certain points of the story. I wasn't really sure which character was saying what (meaning it was unclear to me who the speaker was to a certain sentence). I also felt that the story didn't really flow smoothly at one or two parts (transitioning from one paragraph to another didn't seem smooth and confused me a little). Other than that the story was spectacular. The first 10 pages really grabbed my attention and had my heart in a vice grip. I wasn't sure if I could ever forgive Todd for what he did. Needless to say David made it easy to do so.

I really liked the ideas behind Blessed Curses and the worldbuilding. The story left me feeling giddy with the HEA ending. Best of all, the sex scene towards the end of the book actually made sense. It had a reason to be there and it helped the plot. Too many times, I've read M/M romance books with a sex scene towards the end of the book with no reason. Of course, I appreciate the smut but the scene seems to serve no purpose other than to reaffirm the MCs' love for each other.

The story focuses more on David's character, not Vaughn's. That leaves readers feeling that Vaughn's character can be developed some more and more can be learned about him. Overall, everything works because Vaughn is focused on breaking David's curse and developing their relationship.

I would have loved the story more if it was longer and explored Vaughn's character more. I'm still not completely convinced that Vaughn would make the kind of sacrifice that he did at the end of book to save David. I wish there was more to solidify the characters and make them more human and relateable. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading the story, its paranormal setting, and its unique ideas. This is definitely a story that I would re-read and so this is a 5 star read for me.
