Kitapta iki şey hoşuma gitti. Birincisi, sanatın sadece sanatçı ya da akım başlığı altında ele alınması yerine, sanatçı, akım, mekan gibi unsurların tanıtımına bir arada yer verilmesiydi. Hoşuma giden ikinci şey de, sanatçıların veya akımların bu tür kitaplarda alışık olduğumuz kronolojik bir sıralama yerine rastgele bir düzenle incelenmesi oldu. Bu tercih, hadi hep beraber mağara resminden rönesansa, izlenimcilerden çağdaş sanata gelelim sıkıcılığı yerine okuma keyfini çok artırmış.

Yorumlara baktığım kadarıyla bir çok kişi bu kitabın neden kronolojik olarak sıralama yapmadan basıldığını düşünüp kitabı yerden yere vurmuşlar. Bir tarih kitabı olmadığı için açıkçası bu konuda eleştirmek bana çok mantıksız geldi.
Kitabı bir süre hızlıca okuyup, sonralarına doğru uzun bir ara vermiştim ancak nihayet bitirebildim.
Bu tür kitapları her zaman okumak da sıkıcı gelebiliyor doğrusu.
Sayesinde bir çok ressam öğrenip, bu öğrendiğim ressamlarında bir çok eserini gözden geçirmenin yanında, sanat akımlarını ve bazı çizim tekniklerini de öğrenmiş oldum.
Tarihten bazı fotoğrafçılara yer vermeleri de ayrıca güzeldi.
Zaman zaman dönüp bakacağıma eminim.

As the title implies, this is a really good basic introduction to modern art and artists. This could very well be used in an art class and I wish they would have offered this in school. There were a few photos at the end but I'm undecided as to whether this book would have benefited from photos of the art, but in not having them, I was not distracted from the reading and much less likely to skim past based on if I liked the art or not. So now I'll go back up and look up the many artists and their work that interested me.

Discoveries as I look up the art and artists on the internet afterward:
1. I LOVE Bauhaus art.
2. I do not care for Dadaism even though much of it is done in a collage method, which I do love.
3. Impressionism is dreamy.
4. I do enjoy appropriation art. Think American Gothic and all the many variations on that theme.
5. I admire typography art but not so much all the 'Kitchen', 'Eat' signs that are popular in home decor today.
6. The colors of Fauvism appeal to me.
7. Cubism looks like a fun little exercise.
8. While I like the technique used by Jackson Pollock, I find his pieces too busy.
9. Love the subject and style of Edward Hopper.
10. Frida Kahlo was the master of self-portrait art but didn't live to see her success and admiration grow. She lived a hard life.
11. Pablo Picasso made art seem effortless.
12. Rembrandt's portraits were SO good!
13. I love Georgia O'Keeffe's Evening Star series.

The information in this book was adequate, but I would not recommend it as a good learning resource. There is no sense of organization whatsoever, neither alphabetical nor chronological. You flip from one artist in the 1800s to a modern movement, to an art technique, back to an older movement, then to an modern artist, with no sense of continuity. Also, there are no pictures, which makes it difficult to appreciate the distinct styles and techniques of each entry.

Good introduction for art, but two negative points:
It’s not in a chronological order which would confuse the novice reader about the development of art forms and schools.
Second the lack of painting photos during the description which would require the interested reader in looking the images up himself.

great book to anyone who wants to start learning about art without being overwhelmed! loved it! simple, learned a lot and even despite the apparent lack of order or continuity, that's one of the reasons the book never dragged on and became boring.

I don't generally write reviews - or award one star - but I'm astonished by the poor quality of this book.

There's some interesting information presented, but (as other readers have mentioned) the disjointed way in which it is presented means that you'd do just as well looking up the individual themes online.

Reading the ebook I even found myself wondering if the pages had got scrambled somehow, as there was no discernable sense to it.

There are some plates at the back of the book. On the ebook it would help if these were linked in the text, so one can flick between them. It would also help if the other artworks referred to were in a format that was simple to look up online, including the date.

I suspect that the author is not an Art History expert, which on it's own is not necessarily a bad thing for straightforward, jargon-free communication. However, some editing / proof reading by someone with an art background would surely have helped and appears lacking.

If you are thinking of reading this, try Will Gompertz; What are You Looking At?: 150 Years of Modern Art in the Blink of an Eye. Not quite as wide-ranging (and not perfect) but still superior in every way possible.

Birden fazla sanat akımı, sanatçı ve sanat ile ilgili önemli sayabileceğimiz konular hakkında bilgiler veren kısa bölümlerden oluşuyor kitap. Sanat ile ilgili okumalarında ilerlemiş kişilerin ilgisini çekebilir fakat yeni başlayanların daha çok keyif alacaklarını düşünüyorum.
Benim yer yer keyif alıp yeri geldiğinde de sıkıldığım bir kitap oldu açıkçası. Tek okuma olarak değerlendirilip okunabilinecek bir kitap değil bana göre, çünkü ben öyle başlayıp çabucak sıkıldım. Sonrasında her gün birkaç bölüm okuyup çapraz okuma yaparak bitirdim. Okuduğum en iyi sanat kitabı olduğunu söyleyemem. Bana göre bölümler çok kısaydı, her şeye değinme amacıyla yazar konuları kısa tutmuş. Benim önerim kitabı karıştırıp, sonrasında ilginizi çeken başlıklar hakkında araştırma yapmanız, zira bu şekilde daha çok faydalı olup size katkı sağlayabileceğini düşünüyorum.

Adından içeriği zayıfmış ve tamamen pazarlama amaçlı yazılmış bir kitaba benziyor gibi görünse de sanat tarihi dersinde öğrendiklerimin üzerinden geçmek için harika bir özet olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Yalnız okuması iki sebepten çok uzun sürdü birincisi dönemsel ve yıllara göre bir akış izlememesi, ikincisi de bahsi geçen eserlerin görsellerinin olmayışı. Pek tabi tüm görselleri kitaba eklemek mümkün olmayabilir ama ben yayıncının yerinde olsam kitaptaki sıra ile tüm eserleri renkli olarak bir pdf te toplar linkini de kitabın başında paylaşırdım. Okurken bazı sanatçı ve eserleri o kadar merak ettim ki ya elimde telefon ya da youtube ile daldan dala atlayarak aylar içinde ancak bitirebildim!

Sanat tarihiyle ilgili olan bir kitapta az görsel olması, bilgilerin unutulabilirliğini kolaylaştırıyor. Elimde olan başka bir kitabı uzun zaman önce okumama rağmen görsellerinden dolayı metinleri halen aklımda ve bu kitap aynısını başaramıyor. Fotoğraflar bir sanat kitabının olmazsa olmasıdır, belli dönemleri anlatırken yapılan eserlerden bir tane bile fotoğraf koymadan betimlemek ne yazık ki pek de mümkün değil. Düzensiz içerik dağılımları, fotoğrafsız metinler okuyucunun bilgi almasını zorlaştırırken kitabı okumak da bir hayli yorucu olmaya başlıyor.

It was fine and easy to read, but I would have preferred it if they started each artist with their most famous work so I could know who I was reading about. It took me until one of the final lines in Piet Mondrian to realise that I actually knew one of his pieces, so I actually cared about him. If I did get one thing out of this book, it's that Max Ernst's The Triumph of Surrealism exists.

The pros: relatively simple to grasp
The cons: the severe lack of pictures, the obvious lack of effort put into it, no organization.

Makes me regret picking it up as a budding artist. However, I bought it because it was in line with Music Theory 101, so I suppose it's not that wasteful. But I still strongly wished I got a different art book.

Decent crash course on art history, but way confusing in terms of organization.
The chapters are poorly connected to each other and not ordered by following any intuitive criteria (since the content is regarding art history, a chronological order would be useful)
Overall, it is worth reading not only because it contains approachable language but also due to the coverage of the most relevant art movements, artists, and museums worldwide, in only 290 pages

Wikipedia > bu kitap. Kişiler/kavramlar rastgele gibi görünen bir sıralamayla ele alındığı için konu bütünlüğü yok. Akımlar veya sanatçılar hakkında kendi içinde bilgi versin diyeceğim o da yok 2-3 sayfa wikipediada ilk paragrafta yazacak bilgiler. Örnek resim veya detay verse diyeceğim o da yok.. konuları bildiğimden değil ama “bilmek istediğim 101”e kıyasla çok zayıf ele alınmış bir kitap..

Great Format

I really like this book and the way it is organized. There are quite a few in the series that I would like to read. The thing I like the most about ebooks (kindle) is highlighting automatically synchs with Wikipedia and Dictionary. So any artist or topic that you want more information about can be easily accessed.

3/5. Byłaby to bardziej przejrzysta książka, gdyby opisy reprezentantów stylu w sztuce umieszczone były od razu po omówieniu danego stylu. Tak powstał mały chaos, ale dało się w nim odnaleźć. Czuję niedosyt, bo ten przewodnik traktuje naprawdę pobieżnie podejmowane tematy. Myślę, że dałoby się to zrobić lepiej.

I really hate this book. This is the worst book I've read in 2020.

Firstly, I had to google endlessly because no pictures were used and this is very absurd for an Art book. Secondly, its lack of organization completely killed my enjoyment.

I wish I had never bought this book.
