"I guess this isn't a good time." Lendill folded into the kitchen."Here. It has bourbon in it." I pushed my cup of tea toward him and rose from my seat to make another."Land and sky, Reah, this is strong." Lendill took a sip from my cup."Yeah. Sit down," I said. "What do you want?""Is that any way to treat a mate you haven't seen in months?""You only show up when you want something," I said. "So what is it?""Bel has disappeared," Lendill swallowed more tea, grimaced and then swallowed more."Wizard Bel?" I hadn't seen Bel for years, yet I knew he still worked for the ASD."Yes. I sent him to investigate a problem on Surnath, and he vanished. We can't find him.""What kind of problem?" I asked, sitting down with my freshly poured and spiked tea. I didn't even ask Teeg if he wanted any. I was still pissed at him."A worker in an electronics factory went crazy and killed twenty of his coworkers after getting his hands on a laser pistol somehow. And then, two weeks later, a secretary at a legal firm kills six people there. The governor of the Realm on Surnath asked us to investigate. We thought it was just a copy crime. Bel was in so he volunteered. Was there for three days before he came up missing.""That's terrible," I said. "And you tried mindspeech and everything?""Yes. No answer. Bel isn't one to fall easily into a trap. So we're all concerned.""Me, too," I nodded. I'd known Bel when I was a conscript in the Regular Alliance Army."Norian and I are willing to pay top credit if you'll work a special assignment on this."Wizard Bel is missing, after investigating two crimes on Surnath. Reah agrees to work this special assignment for the ASD, and discovers that Bel's disappearance is linked to far deeper and much darker crimes. The criminals behind these crimes hold the survival of both Alliances in their grip and it is up to Reah to expose them before their final plans become a reality.
Connie Suttle lives in Oklahoma with her husband and three cats.
Connie holds an MFA in Fine Art (film production and animation) and taught courses at the university level before moving on to bookstore management. Nowadays, if she isn't writing or editing, she's dreaming up her next book.
This book, like all the others that I've read by this author, drew me in and wouldn't let go. I'm not really sure why. I mean sure the stories are interesting, and the sheer number of gorgeous male characters might have something to do with it.
But it's not just these factors that keep me hooked. I even like the main characters. In this series its Rhea, in the other one it's Lissa. I'm surprised that I like these characters for one major reason...they take martyrdom to an artform. I mean both of them let their mates walk all over. Ok so the walkers always have some justification for this or were manipulated in some way, but come on. When will Rhea (or Lissa) make her own decisions? I usually like books with strong female lead characters and I don't really think of Connie Suttle's characters like that.
Despite this- or maybe because of it- I can't wait to see what happens next with the storyline and huge cast of characters that were largely introduced in the Blood Destiny series and continue in the High Demon series.
And yea, I'd like to know, what happened to Wizard Bel? I could guess but...
I find it interesting how angry these books make me yet I'm unable to put them down (and may even tear up at spots). Unfortunately I feel like Reah has a bit more responsibility for the way she is treated than Lissa did in her books (after about book 3 anyway), which I find irks me. I guess she felt like she had no bargaining power but I always thought she did. As a previous reviewer stated, both Lissa and Reah are professional martyrs in these books and yet I enjoy the hell out of them.
I didn't expect to be crying toward the end. I feel so sad for Reah and extremely pissed at all her mates. I want to strangle Kirifin. Where in the world is Wizard Bel?
4.5 Stars MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT: I liked this book. It was fast paced and the plot didn't drag at all. I was shocked when I learned that it would take place 25 years after the last book. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it and I was actually pleasantly surprised. I felt so bad for Reah while reading this book. I used to say that I couldn't imagine someone having a more worse life than Lissa, but I was really wrong. It is unbelievable how much Reah went through in this book alone. While I don't discredit what Lissa went through, she was never almost raped, bitten against her will, or had her mates forget that they cared about her. I cried so much during this book at the pure injustice that is Reah's life. Dee said it perfectly at the beginning of the book; Reah was at her breaking point. I mean, how much can one person go through before they break so much that there isn't any coming back? I feel like if Reah hasn't reached that point yet, she is on the brink of it. I really hope that someone is there for her when that happens. I want Reah to be happy because she deserves it more than anyone. I am going to say right now, that I dislike MOST of Reah's mates. I feel like there isn't an excuse for how they treated her during this book. For 25 years, they all stood by and watched while she suffered. She was living in a hovel and wearing rags for crying out loud! No good mate could stand by and watch that happen. Reah said it herself; they only came to her when they wanted sex or needed something from her. That is despicable and Reah deserves better. The only mates that seemed like they cared at all were Ry and Nefrigar. None of the others cared enough to notice that Reah was suffering and had reached her breaking point. In my opinion, none of them (besides Ry and Nefrigar) are mate material at this time. Reah deserves better mates and deep down, I think they all know it because if they didn't, they wouldn't try to control her as much as they do. They are worried that one day, Reah will finally realize that she deserves more and will leave them all. Lendill made me very angry during this book. The mass rape scene especially. When Reah was about to get raped, Lendill didn't beg her to get out of there or try to help her. Instead, he begged her not to turn Thifilatha and protect herself. WHAT?! I don't care what happened. No DECENT mate would just stand there while his mate was about to be raped and do nothing about it. I was horrified that all Lendill was going to do was stand there while it happened and try to assure Reah that it would be over soon. I don't care if it were for the good of mankind or not. No one could look me in the eye and tell me that a loving mate would allow that to happen. If I am being honest, I have no idea why I continue to read these books. The problem is that every time I think about stopping, I can't. I am addicted to this series because I have to know what happens. It frustrates me to no end at the best of times, but I can't imagine not continuing the series. I will be reading the next book; I just hope that Reah gets the ending she deserves.
Garde actually blames Reah for Tory mistakes. She is entitle to "princess" title and vote on the demon council, but Garde wants to take that away, and from her daughters too.
Kifirin is right in one thing, Reah lives in a hovel while everybody else lives in a palace.
The ending was very sad and very emotional. Many things were put into perspective by Kifirin confessions.
Many betrayals. But Reah got some revenge in some part.
GuyThis series is going to be the death of me. I haven't cursed so much or so virulently since I last watched Game of Thrones! I'm telling you now, if you are female and have triggers about captivity, rape, or slavery, get out now. Don't do it to yourself, just don't. I'm going to have to take several shots of whiskey and read a damn chapter of a Celia Rivenbark book before I get any sleep. I refuse to start the next one until tomorrow. I loved it, but damn.
This story really made my heart hurt for Reah. I cried, a lot, especially at the end. However, I was happy to read that her mates weren't purposefully hurting her, since they were MADE to hurt her. Once again, Connie weaves an awesome story that leaves you wanting more!!!
Lovely book! Reah's adventures continue and this book sure pulled out all the feels. When I started reading and figured out that it was set 20 years after the previous book I was disappointed, but it turned out to be one of my favorites. Definitely recommend!
Garde actually blames Reah for Tory mistakes. Even though he is a fully grown man. She is entitle to "princess" title and vote on the demon council, Which should be any way since she had done all of those task for them, but Garde wants to take that away, and from her daughters too. Which makes now since if he want to keep control mostly to the ruling house.
Kifirin is right in one thing, Reah lives in a hovel while everybody else lives in a palace. And she should have at least lived in a better place if she could not lived in the palace with the girls SHE GAVE BIRTH to.
The ending was very sad and very emotional. Many things were put into perspective by Kifirin confessions. Which now that we now know what was going on with her mates make so much more sincere then what Reah said was going on. And she better get her stuff back too.
Many betrayals. But Reah got some revenge in some part. Plus her old JOB back with the grovel cause the grovel shoulld be her since she more than payed it with her own money.
And well what ever happened to wizard Bel. Is he going to be rescued/return to ASD.

I don't know who went through more misery Lissa or Reah, maybe it's a tie.
For 25 years she though one of her mates the father of her child didn't love her or his children. Then Kirifin who claims that she is the child of his heart, did unspeakable things that hurt her by his design when he made a vow not to interfere with his creations. She experience so much that she feels broken and unable to go on and throw away her life. If not for Nefrigar I think she would have died from rape and illness.
She was told all her mates were made to ignore her for years that's emotional damage right there. I am sad that Zen was banished to his world with Peril. I hope she doesn't beak again and I don't know what her mates can do to make up for ignoring her and putting her through so much misery. They didn't even realize that she was living destitute and working to the bone.
I don't think she will ever talk to Garde, he has done alot to hurt her as well.
Man it took me 4 years to find this book ( #5). I could remember her and Ry going under cover at Steller winds planet resort destination. Even her making her dessert with gold flakes. Zen wanting her. But the book blurb changed from what I remembered or it was always poorly written that I never re-found it again until now.
I started reading books by this author with the Blood Destiny series and now have read everything she's published so far. Ms. Suttle has a knack for getting the reader to care deeply about her characters to the point that on numerous occasions, I've found myself crying for some characters or seriously angry with others, all as if they were real rather than fictional.
The icing on the cake is that Suttle is very prolific, putting out a new book every month. It's a testament to her stories that even this often isn't frequent enough to satisfy our desire to find out what happens next to our favorite characters.
So, thanks to Ms. Suttle for all her hard work. Next, please!
I have enjoyed Connie's previous books although I did feel our heroine allowed herself to be a doormat too much - eg. blissfully agreeing to add any male with the hots for her to her growing collection even when she hadn't seemed too interested in them before hand. Ok, by book five, 25 years of multiple marriage I expected a bit of character development and maturity - which IMHO was not there. Too much of the book was taken up with our heroine still being downtrodden - more of the same old same old as earlier books which only made me annoyed and it was a chore to finish book. This will be the last in this series I'll read.
Wow this was an intense book. What is going on with everyone? They continually treat Reah like crap, I don't get it. And all these mates? They don't really act like it. Reah is sent to investigate why Bel is missing, she's to go with Ry. They investigate what Bel was investigating and stumble upon something going on at a local resort. Ry and Reah are sent there undercover as a married couple to infiltrate what is going on there. It's crazy! The ride is nuts, and all that happens is crazy and Reah is still just basically left in the dust forgotten. I feel really badly for her.
As usua, I am not very happy because the end of Miss Suttle are always sad and you end up wanting to strangle their mates!!! But you also finish her books the same day you begun them because they are so rich in characters, plots, twists and emotions you cannot put them down. THAT shows what kind of author she is, one who captivates people. Now when is the sequel??????????????????????????????????, :)
Bel is missing, and Reah will do everything she can to help find him. However, they just found out that it may be a lot more difficult than they thought originally. And Reah is having a ton of issues in her life, and not every one is really treating her right.
This book was good, but also very sad. I'm so sadden by what has happened to Reah, and I'm really hoping she gets a happily ever after.
This is such a great story! I have read 5 books in 4 days. I just can't stop reading other than when I drift off to sleep or have to go to work. Please do yourself a favor...start at book 1 and just keep going. The characters are wonderful and the storyline sweeps you up and takes you on a wild adventure! Love, intrigue, magic, battles...it has it all!!!
And more tragedy. The hits keep coming and Reah is yet again put in some serious danger. Her mates are clueless or have their own planetary uprising-type issues to deal with. This novel made me wonder where the justice is for Reah and whether she'll decide to throw herself in Baetrah sometime in the near future.
Where is the revenge??? I'm thinking she is going to kick some butt with her mates and what?!?! Hey there is more drama (reality T.V. Version) and more action. I'm continuing on.
Unbelievable, the trials and tribulations in this latest book.
Reah undergoes further suffering in her long life, as her mates all seem to either use or abandon her. The climax of the book is unexpected, and justice is served to the evil ones. What will happen next??
a very good book. when i started reading this serise i didn't realise that this was a young adults book but soon noticed it was , although it's a very good read. highly reconmended
This fascinating series continues. Now for the next one. All other books by favourite authors, waiting to be read are being ignored as I reach for book 6.
