"Make sure your health insurance covers psychiatric counseling before reading this book, because you're gonna need it. The experience of this collection may be likened to getting run over by a 666-car locomotive engineered by Lucifer. This is the cream of grotesquerie's crop, a Whitman's Sampler of the heinous, and an absolutely gut-wrenching celebration of the furthest extremities of the scatological, the taboo, the unconscionable, and the blasphemous." -Edward Lee, author of THE HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD and THE DUNWICH ROMANCE If you thought Volume One was intense, you ain't seen nothing yet! Twenty-eight masters of the extreme contribute their most hardcore tales to the anthology that only Blood Bound Books could D.O.A. II. Wrath James White, Jack Ketchum, Robert Devereaux, J.F. UPDATE: I just realized how much this review sucks. It reads like a fucking marketing tool, written by a Marketing TOOL! If you're into this kinda stuff, and I mean INTO this kinda stuff, you will love this. You know who Ed Lee is, and you know what he does. These writers are fucking out there, man. OUT THERE! The kind of place NO ONE wants to be. When these guys wake up in the morning, I think even Satan hides under his covers and says: "Oh Fuck, they're up." Or perhaps, they never sleep? The word "horror" means nothing to these guys. This is absolutely NOT horror. These stories, aside from the absolutely hilarious ones (indicated below with a ** next to the title), are not even your worst nightmare. To assign the "horror" genre to these guys, to lump their fetid grey matter in with the Kings and Koontz, is like putting a honey badger and a fluffy bunny in the same playpen and calling it playtime. I've been calling it “gorror”, but that doesn't fit either. These stories are horrific, and gory, and bloody, and disgusting, yes, but they are also sin incarnate. Absolute and utter sin. Sin that would scare Satan. If you're into that, you came to the perfect place. If you're not, this is not even remotely the place you want to be. Get the fuck out, FAST! If you want to see what this stuff is about, DO NOT start here. You will not last through the first page. Trust me. Trust me, said the spider to the fly.

“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to shew when you are there.”

“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
can ne'er come down again.”

Is there a common fear factor? Are there universal fears? Fears so dark, so empty, so unfathomable, they are ingrained in everyone’s natural being. Fears so deep and dirty, that they infect an entire species? Horror is so hard to classify these days. Irrational fear. Imaginary demons. Insane desires. Repulsive acts. D.O.A. II is practically an encyclopedia of fear. The 28 stories in this anthology will test each one of your weaknesses. When you’re finished reading, you may not have found a definitive universal fear, but you will have found at least one fear you can call your very own.

All well written, impossibly graphic, and universally repulsive and entertaining, each author is a beautiful black angel of horror. A few favorites:

The Devouring – Kristopher Triana – Ever play truth or dare? Ever make a snuff film with your boyfriend? “Whether people admit it or not, there is a side to everyone that wants to witness things that are almost impossible to imagine, let alone see. The genius of snuff is not its existence, but rather its universal appeal. While totally repugnant, it is still more enticing than the filthiest porn.”

Real Dino Shit – Wol-Vriey – It’s always a problem when your fat, naked, baby eating, red-headed zombie cousin is stuck behind your toilet. “There was a zombie in Mo’s toilet. Her name was Mary. She was immensely fat and a redhead and had been there for three days now.”

Sexy – Wrath James White – Trust me on this, you do not want to look up an app called Eros Morte it doesn’t exist. And thank you for reminding me to watch Lair of the White Worm again. “I was terrified of losing control, afraid to find myself carried away by passions I could not bend to my will and master with reason.”

The Pubic Hair Tumbleweed – Joshua Dobson – How many times have you been sitting in the laundromat thinking, “I’ll be damned if I’m gonna be bested by a ball of carrot-colored sex-offender pubes.” Maybe what they say about red pubes being good luck is true?

3 Stars - The Devouring - Damn. How do you rate something you're not into? The writing was solid. The couple, from my point of view, are twisted-sick, and are into some stomach-clenching, asphyxiation shit. If you dig that snuff stuff this may be for you.

5 Stars- If Memory Serves by Jack Ketchum- Multiple personalities. Some secretss should stay just that.

5 Stars- Scream and I'll Come To You by Raymond Little- Maybe they should have used another symptom instead of screaming. Too easy to misunderstand.

4 Stars- Real Dino Shit- A pregnant zombie? Cool story.

5 Stars- Finger Cuffs by Matt Kurtz- The prey becomes the predator.

4 Stars- Annointed by D. Lynn Smith- Plumbing the drains of sin.

3 Stars- Home by J.F Gonzalez- A solid story, but nothing horrific.

4 Stars- Road Kill by Monica J. O'Rourke- That was sick!

3 Stars- A Scalene Love Triangle by Kerry G.S. Lipp- Everyone gets off

2 Stars- Bordertown by Laura Campbell- Don't worry be healthy

2 Stars- One Flesh by Robert Devereaux

3 Stars- Telescopic by Harper Hull

2 Stars - Sexy by Wrath James White- When I die, I wanna be remembered as....

5 Stars- Threads by Calie Voorhis- Gross

2 Stars- Burn the Witches by K. Trap Jones

4 Stars- Under the Pretext of Propensity by Anton Cancre- Beware underage fantasizing! Nice ending.

2 Stars- Every Drop of Blood Has a Soul by David Quinn

5 Stars- Dr. Scabs and The Hags of El Cajon by Robert Essig- Drugs and scabs. What an odd combination.

5 Stars- STD by David Berstein- So freaking nasty!

3 Stars - Fat Boy by Kelly Hudson

4 Stars- The Pubic Hair Tumbleweed by Joshua Dobson- Too short, but original.

3 Stars- The Proud Mother by Ken MacGregor- A dead man's baby.

3 Stars- Game of Golf by Gregory Norris

3 Stars- Slice of Life by Thomas Pluck

3 Stars- Stud Service by J S Reinhardt

3 Stars- Give Me Something good to Eat by Shane McKenzie

3 Stars- Linger by Daniel Russell

3 Stars- Skunk Jr by John McNee

A really extreme horror read with some very talented authors. Some of them are new to me and I will be looking to see what else they have written.

Recommended for those who can stomach dark and twisted reads.

Uuurgh. Utterly disgusting. But deliciously so. Its not horror per se, which only churns you in one register (as in, I’m scared), but a quagmire of puss filled, festering open sores on curdled flesh and chunky torrents of snot boogers which slide rancidly down puke crusted throats like escargot on the prowl, orgies of writhing in red tinged ejaculate on the floor and lapping up piss thirstily, obese women whose gelatinous flesh folds over glistening rolls as they strain to eke out a dump, dicks with pimple encrusted zitoids whose white heads look like whipped butter and ooze with nicotine coloured pus, mother son loving with a scalping thrown in for free, and necrophilia: oh yes, virgins who straddle corpses and are impregnated with dead man’s cum, fucking octogenarians whilst dismembering them, and my personal favourite, fucking whilst eating yourself. All tastes catered for. I don’t see what was missed out here, but obviously this is just the tip of the iceberg because contributor Ken Magregor gives it only 3 stars!

What, ho? I didn’t think any atrocity had been omitted, me, but perhaps I am a mere novice.
Still, it dids what its supposed to do: I regurgitated my dinner, squirmed in my chair, got turned on, got grossed out, got putt off, got put one over, got going, got me a good ole Halloween read.

D.O.A. II EXTREME HORROR COLLECTION
Edited By David C. Hayes & Jack Burton
2013 Blood Bound Books
Stories by Jack Ketchum, Wrath James White, Robert Devereaux, J.F. Gonzalez, David Quinn and more

My Review 4.0 Stars

"Make sure your health insurance covers psychiatric counseling before reading this book, because you're going to need it…” Edward Lee, author of Header

“This is the cream of grotesquerie's crop, a Whitman's Sampler of the heinous, and an absolutely gut-wrenching celebration of the furthest extremities of the scatological, the taboo, the unconscionable, and the blasphemous." -Edward Lee, author of Header.

I was excited by the prospect of reading these three collections of extreme horror which included stories by some of the most highly lauded names in the genre. I purchased all three (D.O.A. I. II, and III) a couple years ago and recently decided to dust one of them off and give it a go.

I read this generous volume over a period of weeks and posted Status Updates and Ratings as I meandered along. This collection contains 330 pages and quite a number of individual tales of extreme horror. It occurs to me that if I attempted to include those individual updates in a book review it would be cumbersome. I noted that some reviewers grouped their ratings by using Honorable mentions and praising the headliners. I will attempt an approach along these same lines and forego articulating just how bad several of the contributions happened to be. That said, my Rating of the short story collection will be the average of all the ratings I assigned.

THE DEVOURING by Kristopher Triana was the first story out of the gate, admittedly penned by a Headliner. It was among my favorites out of the entire story collection. Rated 5 Stars.

IF MEMORY SERVES by the legendary Jack Ketchum followed and garnered a second Rating of 5 Stars.

SCREAM AND I’LL COME TO YOU by Raymond Little was a great story, an easy 5 Stars, and another one of my favorites in the collection.

FINGER CUFFS by Matt Kurtz was a fantastic entry and my favorite in the collection. I Rated it 5 Stars and that same night I bought three books by this author one which I have already read and liked.

HOME by J.F. Gonzalez brought another 5 Stars to the party. It was not as extreme as I would have anticipated from another Headliner like Gonzales but definitely a top shelf short story.

A SCALENE LOVE TRIANGLE By Kerry G.S. Lipp added another 5-Stars to the tally. It was both erotic as hell and memorably chilling, excellent contribution to the collection.

BORDERTOWN by Laura J. Campbell while not adding any real gravitas to the collection she added her marvelous talent and brought it with a story that got under my skin and made me feel like the temperature had dropped in the room. A different kind of horror, and certainly my kind of horror. Rating 5 Stars.

SEXY by Wrath James White not unsurprisingly adds another shining 5 Stars to the total of outstanding contributions listed above.

FAT BOY by Kelly M. Hudson is outstanding and rides in on a blood red horse flashing 5 Stars.

SLICE OF LIFE by Thomas Pluck was another 5-Star Read I really enjoyed. It was brutal, stark, emotional barren, espoused a message, and even offered up a double-entendre for its title.

GIVE ME SOMETHING GOOD TO EAT by Shane McKenzie is a really outstanding extreme horror tale. It is a 5-Star Read without having to think about it. It falls in my top five favorites in the collection.

SKUNK JR. by John McNee is an entertaining romp through extreme horror tales and earns a shining Rating of 5 Stars. It is also the last story in this collection.

There were a dozen (12) 5-Star Reads in this collection for this individual reader. It is a true fact that not every reader is going to agree with what I must characterize as my naïve but honest likes and dislikes.

I am choosing to include honorable mention for all of the 4-Star Reads, including a couple of 3.5 Ratings I rounded up. These include the following tales of horror:

STD by David Bernstein – 4 Stars
UNDER THE PRETEXT OF PROPENSITY by Anton Cancre – 4 Stars
THE PROUD MOTHER by Ken MacGregor – 4 Stars
GAME OF GOLF by Gregory L. Norris – 4 Stars

They were an additional 7 contributions which were allotted a rating of 3 Stars.
Three stories were allotted 2 Stars and just to point out that I do not select the well-known names in horror and rate them 5 Stars, two out of three of these authors are major players and one is a veritable icon in extreme horror.

Finally, I gave 1 Star to one contributor and did not include a second contributor because I did not understand the point of the story. I think this is fair since many readers would have allotted 1 Star in that situation.

There are a grand total of 28 stories in this collection, one of which I am not rating as previously noted, which leaves 27 in all to average for the total Rating of Stars for this extreme horror collection. Rating 3.85 Rounded to 4.0 Stars.

I read a few Amazon Customer Reviews and many were favorable. One was (in my opinion) overly zealous in advising readers not to bother with this collection. I would not discourage picking it up for its reasonable price for a couple of sound reasons. First, my review is only my opinion, and I will freely admit that many of the authors of the stories I disliked the most were highly praised and listed in the advertisement. Second, what in the heck is wrong with a 4-Star Rating?

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY---YOU DECIDE

Couldn't finish this. There's extreme horror, and then there's sleaze and cheap gross-outs. The majority of what I read was the latter. I'm giving this two stars because there were some quality, and actually subversive, stories here.

I read this book about 20 minutes in and vomited in my mouth and I couldn't continue. I tried the other chapters but I could not get past a few pages each time... I cannot stomach any of the stories until completion, in fact, I feel a little bile rising up my throat typing up this review... *pukes* Sorry I'm not much help of a proper review but I would highly recommend braving your soul for this.

This is a no-frills anthology that goes straight to the action. Twenty-eight stories with only a few flops among them. It's a much stronger offering than the first book. It's more creative, has better twists, and the tales themselves are generally of a higher quality, plot- and literary-wise. A lot of the really good ones are bunched in the first half tho.

The most note-worthy stories here are:

The Devouring - a rip-roaring start to the collection featuring the kind of feverish passion that defaces and snuffs and yes, devours

If Memory Serves - it's two for two for this book as Ketchum serves us a tale of abuse that masks something sinister

Finger Cuffs - a truly inventive if refreshingly organic way to punish a sick predator. The title is but a pale, severely understated clue of the delights to come

A Scalene Love Triangle - a harrowing exploration of a doomed ménage, with clever (if a bit heavy-handed) takes on the triangle motif

One Flesh: A Cautionary Tale - reincarnation breeds an unhealthy measure of lust and homicidal psychopathy when a man and his father is reborn in the body of his infant son

Sexy - a conservative, vanilla joe discovers the nexus between eroticism and death in the form of a bewitching, rubenesque sex murderess

Fat Boy - about the kind of (self-)hate that kills

Stud Service - a balls-blanching tale of male rape featuring one of the most repulsive crones I've ever had the displeasure of encountering in a written page

I'm rating this 8/10 or 4 stars out of 5.

More fun than a bag of severed appendages. Some of these stories were extreme, as in Sexy, by Wrath James White, some were extreme in terms of their psychological horror such as Jack Kethchum's If Memory Serves. Finally, some where extreme in terms of grossness, as in Monica O'Rourke's Road Kill. Others were less extreme from rather tame, Home by JF Gonzalez (I know I know) to midrange nervouse breakdown, like in Fat Boy. Great writing throughout, some really nice and nasty bits, some misses, some just plain nasty stuff. All in all an entertaining anthology.

It’s October and it’s time to get scared! I’ve read horror for decades so I just didn’t just want some run-of-the-mill story. No, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and test my boundaries.

D.O.A. II is an anthology of Extreme Horror. For me Extreme Horror brings up images of brutal torture, blood and guts, explicit pain and suffering among other such immoral acts of human behavior. While some of these stories would fit into this category, others necessarily did not. Yes they were Horror but not necessarily Extreme Horror.

Which got me to thinking if my definition of Extreme Horror is wrong in the first place? There was no Introduction or Forward so I don't know how the editors selected these stories. I did a quick Google search and found a definition of Extreme Horror that pertained to movies but could also be used for books:

1)Tackles social, cultural, or sexual taboos
2)Addresses controversial topics
3)Contains gross-out scenes
4)Torture for the sake of torture

Okay, now with that in hand maybe my definition was too strict. I seem to put too much emphasis on #3 and #4.

Regardless, there are some outstanding stories in this book. Definitely worth checking out if you are into this kind of thing. My favorites included: Scream and I’ll Come to You (Raymond Little); Finger Cuffs (Matt Kurtz); Road Kill (Monica O’Rourke); A Scalene Love Triangle (Kerry G.S. Lipp); Fat Boy (Kelly Hudson); and The Pubic Hair Tumbleweed (Josh Dobson).

And yes, my boundaries were tested.

**Warning- Only for the seriously depraved and disturbed of heart.**
Nightmares are rarely this disturbing. I wasn't sure if the second book would live up to the first one but bless their twisted little hearts (all contributing authors), there is no skimping on the nasty in book two. :) (I marathon read these two anthologies in a two day period, one clicking the second book as fast as the page would load.)
I've been thinking about putting a warning in the first review since I started book two, out of respect for others. This is not your typical horror anthology. If you consider yourself sane, these probably aren't the books for you. If however laughing while fighting waves of nauseousness and cold sweats sounds like your cup of tea, welcome in sick f*ckers! <3 lol

I always enjoy anthologies. My memory is awful so I already can’t tell you much about any of these stories besides it was a pretty good read. Some twisted stuff in here and only 1-2 duds. This is extreme horror so not everyone’s cup of tea but a nice little collection including some familiar names in the horror community.

Some of these stories are really, really bad. It seemed maybe they were making fun of themselves and of tropes but they were still just... terrible, and I couldn’t even enjoy them from a satire POV.

Others I really enjoyed! Mostly I sat here in abject horror with my face scrunched up. I’m generally someone who is very desensitized, but a few of these stories hit on my weak spots and really, deeply grossed me out and I barely battled through them. That’s what I had hoped for.

Personally I’ve come to realize short stories aren’t really my jam, I prefer getting to know more about everything before jumping into the gore; there is no reprieve from the grotesque here. None.

Overall it’s a lot of body horror, sex, violence and gore. If it’s gross, it’s here. So if that’s what you’re looking for, then this is an alright read.
It’s intense and unpleasant, but that’s what you get reading splatterpunk/extreme horror.

This was a dark, fun, sick, twisted, and carnage filled splatter ride that I didn't want to end! Fucking loved it! 🤘I appreciated the variety of extreme horror that was packed into this collection. You have sexual horror, psychological horror, body horror, creature features, necrophilia and everything delicious in between. The body count is piled high at the end of this ride. Giving this collection 5 blood splattered body bags! 💀💀💀💀💀

This was ridiculous. Each story was enthralling and disturbing at the same time. Its hard to have a favorite when they're all so varied, but I've gotta say I liked JF Gonzalez's, Ketchum, and Mckenzie's most, there just weren't any weak entries so its hard to specify something like that.

This was more like it, as anthologies go. Overall a lot more variety compared to Woom and some true stand-out pieces. The gross-out horror that is there is much better realized and conveys a sense of true revulsion and terror as compared to some of the "Preteens telling exaggerated stories" feel that some of the chapters of Woom had about them. Especially "Stud Service." Jesus Fucking Christ, what a vile ride that was.

"Home" had a twist followed shortly by another twist just before the ending and left me reeling in stunned silence. That story might be my favorite of this anthology. Another "get in, hit hard, get out" kind of story.

"Give Me Something Good To Eat" was an awesome and chilling Halloween story just when you thought Halloween stories were played out and tired. Oh, hell of a twist ending there too.

"Fat Boy" was a deliciously (pun intended) gruesome revenge tale satisfying for all the right...or wrong?...reasons. I will say that following it up with "The Pubic Hair Tumbleweed" was probably the biggest case of mood whiplash I've had all year, though. Seriously, what were you guys thinking?

There were a few that missed the mark, namely "Telescopic" and "Bordertown". They weren't bad stories by any stretch, but something about them just didn't quite resonate. I think Telescopic had a bit of a weak ending and Bordertown had all the makings of a good horror tale but somehow they failed to coalesce.

Best Story: Either "Home" or "Good to Eat." Between the former's sudden rollercoaster ride and the latter's high-octane terror from start to finish, these were absolute highlights.
Least Favorite Story: "Road Kill". Kind of an aimless gross-out hillbilly tale that, to me, fell flat.
Sickest/Grossest/Most Fucked-Up Story: "One Flesh: A Cautionary Tale" Holy shit, this was a warped premise. No spoilers, but...wow.

One general nitpick/complaint about this: It could have used more proofreading. I noticed some oddly-placed commas and hyphens, which could be attributed to Ebook file formatting issues, but also incorrect use of words like "weary" when the writer meant to say "wary," or "exasperated" in place of "exacerbated." Not a huge deal but it does break immersion a little bit and for horror, atmosphere is so important.

I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who's just starting out in Extreme Horror/Splatter Punk. But if you are seasoned in this Genre I highly recommend it. There are certain stories I enjoyed more the others and will return to re-read them in the future.

I have read Extreme Horror/Splatter Punk books in the past but this book left me feeling queasy in certain parts!

"Telescopic" by Harper Hull - A cop returns home to find a note on the door directing him to the backyard where he finds a telescope. Looking into it he sees another telescope on the top floor of an office building so he drives over there. Looking into that telescope he sees another on the third floor of a house so he drives over there. When he looks into that one he sees a man wearing a pig mask looking back at him and realizes that he is looking into his home's bedroom where the killer is making mocking gestures over the butchered corpse of the cop's wife.

"Finger Cuffs" by Matt Kurtz - Gene drives his van in the country looking for girls to molest but the sheriff has awakened a creature that forces him to procure victims for it. When her daughter screams in the barn Beth almost shoots her to spare her a miserable death only to realize she had just been startled by a rat.
