Do you lie awake each night tossing and turning, trying to fall asleep or stay asleep? Are you tired of the quick-fix, over-the-counter, or prescription drug remedies that promise more than they deliver? If you're one of the millions who struggle with sleepless nights, you need to know that most people with insomnia or other sleep difficulties never receive the treatment that could finally put their problems to rest. Now, one of the nation's pioneering sleep specialists, Dr. Barry Krakow, shares his unique seven-step program that targets the mental, emotional, and physical causes of your sleep problems. Using the combined natural and high-tech mind-body approach designed, personally tested, and used by Dr. Krakow himself, you will learn how to get the quality sleep you need and the rest you deserve. Based on scientific research and clinical expertise, Dr. Krakow's Sleep Dynamic Therapy program will forever transform the way you think and feel about insomnia or poor sleep. At its core, Sleep Dynamic Therapy explains how the mind and body conspire to wreak havoc on the quality of your sleep. Contrary to conventional theories about stress and light sleep, most people who suffer from insomnia or poor sleep must address both psychological and physical factors to solve their sleep problems. These revolutionary ideas set ""Sound Sleep, Sound Mind ""apart from all other books. Some of the immediate and long-term benefits you'll gain include an ability to fall asleep more quickly, fewer awakenings at night, greater ease returning to sleep if awakened, more solid hours of sleep each night, and less daytime sleepiness and fatigue. You'll also reap additional rewards, including enhanced mental and physical health, greater powers of concentration, and a more stable mood, all of which arise from increasing the quality of your sleep. No other book provides you with as much insight and instruction on how to take control of your sleep problems, conquer your insomnia, and gain the quality sleep you might have once thought unimaginable.
There was only one really good suggestion for insomnia, and that was to change your attitude towards getting out of bed when you can't sleep. You should do something fun and not think of it as a kind of torture. Good advice, even though I'm not always able to implement it. Much of the book, such as the first section, was about useless stuff, like how much lack of sleep damages us. Duh!
Krakow's book offers strategies for improving sleep quality both mentally and physically. It includes cheap and cheerful options, information about sleep studies ($$$), and oh so many other things to try to help your sleep quality improve.
After reading the book I have much less anxiety about insomnia. A few of the techniques that Krakow offered have definitely improved my waking life. I am not sure if this book actually has helped my sleep improve that much. Though I haven't had a sleep study yet.
It is worth checking the book out. If you do, skip the beginning of the book. Much of it is only there to convince you to do something about your sleep problems. Honestly, I don't need any convincing.
Also if you have an anxiety problem (other than 'I can't fall asleep, OH NO') you probably will need supplementary help with that. This book does offer a few tips, but it isn't going to be able to fix everything that is going on in your waking life.
This is the BEST book I have found to help improve sleep! The author's help with balancing the TFI--thinking, feeling, imagination--system is not only useful for improved sleep but also for living in general. God has used this book to literally change my life for the better. Prior to reading this book I was way out of balance towards thinking about everything and quenching my emotions. This book has taught me how to experience my emotions again, which in turn is improving my sleep.
Finally, a book that addresses all the elements of sleep disturbances and disorders: biological, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive. Sound Sleep, Sound Mind by Dr. Krakow addresses various sleep problems and provides drug-free remedies to get you to sleep. Highly Recommend.
Practical and feasible treatment for anyone who experiences tiredness during the day or the need to nap. Clear explanations of gradual or aggressive treatment with psychological and physiological strategies. Highly recommended.
I'm have chronic insomnia and this book provides some really excellent methods for getting to sleep sooner. I think the advice is practical and really works. The book is very readable and I highly recommend it if you have trouble sleeping.
