First Impressions
Tall Dark and Vampire is an interesting read and I was quite curious to see what this author would do here. I do know that this series and the Amoveo series are loosely connected. I have had this one on my kindle for quite a long while, but I really was in the mood for a paranormal and it’s been a while since I have indulged in a vampire romance. And unfortunately, this one didn’t quite work out for me as many of this authors’ books have. So I was disappointed in this reading. I had such higher expectations than what I received in this book here. I will say that the first half of the story is solid, I went into this book really enjoying it but the middle of the story just fell flat, and not until the end did it wrap up nicely. So while I will always recommend this author and even this series (I read book 3 in the series a while ago and it was a five star read for me) so I think it just wasn’t a fully consistent read in what I expected but a solid story was delivered here.

Summary
The story sets off with our heroine, Olivia Hollingsworth, who has been having dreams for the past twenty years of a man she once knew, the love of her life who was killed when she was turned into a vampire. But now its been three hundred years and vampires shouldn’t have dreams, but she is experiencing them with more intensity. Olivia is head of her coven, but when there is a human that is killed and one of her vampires in her coven is the prime suspect she comes face to face with a cop and the man she has been dreaming of, who is the spitting image of her long lost love….Doug Paxton. Doug is human and is a police officer and detective, and he is determined to find out who is brutally killing humans, but there is an intense connection that he feels for Olivia and while he suspects she knows more than she is letting on, he also can’t deny what he is feeling for her. But when they are attacked and his partner is murdered and he has almost killed himself, Olivia saves his life but it comes at a cost, he is now a vampire and he is full of feelings of anger and hurt towards Olivia. Even if he doesn’t understand this new world he is living in, he also can’t deny the feelings he has for this vibrant woman that seems to know him more than anyone else ever has. But as Olivia and Doug work together to find out why there are so many rogue vampires being made, they also could be in more trouble than they realize…..

What I Loved
There were quite a few elements to this story that I actually really enjoyed here, and I was so drawn to this story here. I especially drawn to the reincarnation aspect of the story. My heart just broke for our heroine, who just has so much depth of love for Doug and he has no memory of her. She also is experiencing evidence of being a bloodmate to Doug which certain leadership of the vampire league find threatening because if you have a blooded mate, you can walk in the sun. I really was so interested by the set up of this story and seeing the way that the author built up the certain vampire plot device that was developed in the story. I did have a fun time with Olvia’s coven and the vampires that she is over. She definitely has her hands full with some of them. But she was such a wonderful heroine, in how she is a true leader and balances out firmness with love and affection. And she always has faith in her love to Doug. Even when he has anger towards her, she is so gracious with him and I truly admired her as the heroine of the story. There are aspects of the hero that I did enjoy. I admired that he was always willing to do that right thing and even be willing to sacrifice himself if need be. He is a fighter and I did like how well he takes to being a vampire once he gets over his anger.

What I Struggled With
There was only one aspect of the story that I truly struggled with here and that is the hero.. I struggled with his character so much. Once he gets turned he gets so angry and bitter towards Olivia and I just couldn’t understand it especially when she saved his life. He just puts all the blame on her shoulders and I could understand at first being angry or hurt at losing yourself, but to be honest, I struggled with his character at times for much of the book and when he turns against Olivia I just couldn’t reconcile enjoying his character enough as it took much enjoyment from the story.

Overall View
Tall Dark and Vampire is a sexy, heart-filled paranormal romance that sets up the series in a thrilling tale of vampire lore, a fated love, and a second chance story to deliver a satisfying turnout.

Write a review? Oh my gosh, I'm just trying to get my head together and think of words at the moment! Hmmm....ok, here goes.

I'm blown away by the feelings this book has given me. By that, I mean, heart pounding, adrenaline, smiles, tears! This continuation-spin off from the Amoveo Series is amazing! I love Sara's writing anyhow, but the way the new characters are introduced and the lives they lead, just throws you right in the middle and makes you want More!

In my opinion, y'all should read the Amoveo series first, if you haven't already. Number 1, that series rocks it. Number 2, obviously there are some characters that were introduced previously. It'll 'flow' better, I promise. :)

Again, I'm not one to write much about the book and characters, I feel sometimes that too much information is given. I like reviews that tells how the reader felt! How much that book was loved! And I loved this one!!

Rock on, Sara!!

I went to the Barbara Vey Readers Appreciation Luncheon today, and got to sit with Sara Humphreys and received this book. I came home and I started reading it and four hours later I finished it. I couldn't put it down.
The writing was amazing and the story sucks you in. Olivia is a kick butt girl with a soft side, but not in the way that you get annoyed with it, it fits her personality and how she responds to the people around her. Doug is that macho guy we all want that isn't all about showing off. You feel a real connection to the characters Sara created and want to stay with them longer. I didn't want their story to end and will want to continue visiting them every chance I get. It isn't rushed and doesn't feel force. If vampires and shifters existed in our world and I got to chose who I would want to hang out with Olivia's family would be my choice. I am so glad I got a chance to meet Sara Humphreys and was introduced to her books. She will be on my buy list when I see a new book by her.

Alright, alright! True confessions and all that, I chose this book based on the title for the most part with a smidge of wanting to try the author after hearing good things and another smidge that thought the blurb sounded good too. I knew about Sara Humphreys' Amoveo series and it has a good rep, but I was behind so thought I'd start this new series instead. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that this is a spin-off to that series so the worldbuilding and some characters were crossovers. It was not a total loss or just a very tiny one that I felt for not starting with the original series because I was able to enjoy and track with this book just fine. It was deliciousness from start to finish.

Olivia is a three centuries' old vampire who has a heart of gold for her created vampire coven family made up of 'strays' that she has rescued over the years. She is careful to teach her coven to deny the monster within and live good, productive lives. Olivia gives to these others, but she remains separate and lonely avoiding relationships of a romantic nature because no one can replace the love of her life who died the night she was turned. Oddly enough, in the last few years she has started dreaming about Douglas and the dreams are vivid.

One night, Olivia's well-ordered world comes crashing down around her when her latest vampire child gets the whole coven particularly Olivia into a bit of a pickle when a human she was last seen with turns up drained and very dead not far from the night club where Olivia and all her coven live and work. The death is discovered by the human police and Olivia is shocked down to her stylish Loubatins when the detective on the case is in the spitting image of her own long-dead lover, Douglas.

Doug stands before the beautiful night club owner and can't utter two coherent words together because here stands the woman of his dreams- literally. He has dreamed about this woman's likeness for years and his instinct tells him that she is keeping secrets in relation to his new case. Doug wants answers and Olivia evades.

Both are working the case from their own ends and soon their investigations converge. The danger stalking the streets and threatening all that Olivia cares about forces them to work together against her better judgment. As her secrets come out, she is terrified that the answers will drive Doug to want nothing to do with her.

This new series has everything that I enjoy blended together: strong and likeable characters, creative paranormal worldbuilding, intriguing mystery and passionate romance. In retrospect, I do wish that I'd started with the other series first- something I will rectify soon because I loved this one so much. As an intro to a new series, this one did great and I'm eager for the next installment.

I liked how the story switched perspectives and I appreciated that the instant attraction was not satiated immediately between Olivia and Doug. They had to work out all the secrets first, but then wowsers were they good together. She was a strong gal because she had been alone and fending for herself for a while, but he was the perfect blend of stronger male who was understanding yet firm. He was also a tender, possessive and passionate lover with her. The secondary characters weren't just fillers and I look forward to running into them again in future stories.

It was an enjoyable start to a new spin-off series that paranormal romance fans who love strong characters and spicy romances should give a whirl.

Thanks to Net Galley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book for review purposes.

First impressions are often times deceiving and that couldn’t be truer than with Sara Humphreys latest book. At first glance, Tall, Dark and Vampire appears to be just another “vamp story” but beneath its pretty cover lives a well developed story peppered with rich lore and a timeless romance.

For me it was Humphreys mythology that propelled this novel from being just an average, everyday read to something truly special. Anyone who’s read a decent amount of paranormal fiction is probably familiar with the term daywalker but the Dead in the City series takes it to a whole new level by making one myth go hand-in-hand with yet another lore, that of the bloodmate. Now true love comes with its fair share of advantages which also ensures that the stakes are higher than ever. I liked that despite all of the pros that come with being undead that there’s also a few disadvantages as well, namely blood memories. In this world, when a vampire feeds directly from the source they also absorb their victim’s memories for eternity so it’s now doubly important that they chose their prey wisely. It’s hard enough living with one’s own sins never mind those of others as well.

I really enjoyed Doug as this book’s lead male protagonist; he’s a cop who’s investigating the murders connected to The Coven nightclub when things go awry. I liked how Humphreys took a good-to-the-core character and turned him into the epitome of evil: a vampire. When first confronted with his new reality Doug confesses his plans to end his existence but the more time he spends with Olivia, the more he realizes that not all vamps are bad. I thought the “natural vampire” aspect was pretty neat too. Doug’s transformation is anything but typical and the skills he acquired as a police officer serve him well in his new life. He has one of the smallest learning curves that I’ve ever encountered in paranormal fiction. I also liked how the author described his first moments as a vamp; she does a phenomenal job of depicting all of the heightened sights, sounds and smells. There was one chapter specifically where I felt like I was seeing the world for the first time through Doug’s eyes.

I flew through the first 3/4′s of this book; the murder investigation was intriguing and the chemistry between Doug and Olivia was downright scorching! The ending on the other hand felt rushed and didn’t really fit with the rest of the story. It was just too… perfect. It seemed as though the author forced their HEA and it didn’t do their journey justice at all. If I would have stopped reading this book at around the 250 page mark it probably would have been a 5-star read. Tall, Dark and Vampire starts off strong but fizzles towards the end; all-in-all, not a bad start to Sarah Humphreys Dead in the City series.

Dead in the City #1

If you’ve read Undone (Amoveo Legend Series, Book 4) then you’ll know some of the characters in this book, if you haven’t then the characters may not mean as much to you (at least to begin with) but you’ll still enjoy the read.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this new series but I was completely drawn in within the first couple of chapters. I read a lot of vampire books, but this one definitely stuck out from the rest and was unique and different to the mass of vampire books available. Despite Olivia being a vampire, she tries to save people where she can and together they form a family of sorts who all help run her nightclub. Working hard, she doesn’t let people close romantically and has been celibate for 300 years after losing the love of her life. Doug, a policeman, is investigating a murder when he pops by the nightclub to question a barmaid but is left speechless when coming face to face with Olivia, who is literally the girl of his dreams.

I loved the chemistry and history between Olivia and Doug, who have always been connected. Together they become whole and will do anything to keep what they have, and their family, alive. The emotions clearly shine throughout the book, and the descriptive nature allows the reader to easily imagine the whole storyline. A well written story that provides characters you’ll care for and want to carry on reading about.

I received an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this book, I’ve read Sara Humphreys before and enjoyed it but this is a new series. I have to say I enjoyed this book immensely. It was funny and action packed, one of my favorite combinations. Olivia was a great combination of compassionate and kick ass. She loves her “family” and would do anything to protect it, but she is not one to take shit. She is a protector by nature and will protect them to the death if she has to. Over 300 years ago she had a lover as a human, the man she was set to marry. On the night she was turned he was killed, and for 300 years she has mourned him, never so much as dating. For 20 years she has been dreaming of her former lover, Doug. As a vampire, she isn't supposed to have the ability to dream; only the fabled Bloodmates have that capability. When the Detective Doug Paxton walks into her bar investigating a murder she knows that he is her lost love only as a human he is off limits to her. Doug is a good mix of macho Alpha versus caring protector. I really enjoyed his character he takes his job as a cop seriously and truly wants justice for the victims. H immediately recognizes Olivia from his dreams and knows that she is meant to be his. All his life he thought he was incapable of relationships but in reality his heart already belonged to someone else, an unknown red headed woman. He knows what he wants and he is not willing to let anyone the way of what he wants including the woman he wants. Olivia pushes Doug away for his own protection but not even she can fight fate and Doug. In this book we are taken on a fun action packed and steamy ride. The book is hecka fast paced. I was reading along and before I knew it I was half way through the book. All of the characters including the side characters were all vastly entertaining. I am very much so looking forward to the next books in this series. I will definitely be reading them!

It can't be easy for an author to find an innovative twist on a long standing genre, but Sara Humphreys has scored a hit!
Tall, Dark and Vampire is a story filled with action, passion and dark suspense, that’s sure to get your heart pumping from the very first chapter. Add to the mix some mystery, fidelity that has spanned centuries and a perilous menace bent on revenge, and you have a tale that will lure you in and hold you captive until the very last page.
With an extraordinary cast of intriguing characters and assorted personalities, Tall, Dark and Vampire provides a stimulating plot and promises to launch the beginning of an enthralling and addictive new series!
Thank you Ms Humphreys, I do love my Vampires!!!!

Whooo Weeeee.. Sara Humphreys is at it again!! Tall, Dark and Vampire is the first book in her Dead in the City Series and with it she shows us that she is not a one hit wonder. While I will always adore those Amoveo's I am falling quite willingly for Sara's Vamps.. And for those of you who know me, you will be quite surprised.

Tall, Dark and Vampire is a Vampire story.. not creatures based on mythology, not Atlanteans not based on a war between good vamps and bad, not Vamps that ascend to other dimensions ..nope good old fashioned vampires.. you know where they are sired by another vamp.. where they live in covens.. all those things of legend.. and yes I still FREAKIN LOVED IT.. Me the queen of make the vamps with a twist because otherwise it just gets boring!! Didn't matter Sara writes a quality story and uses the mythos that is vampire to her advantage.

Olivia Hollingsworth is a sexy Vampire with a big heart (so to speak) she is forever saving those that need to be saved. Those that have been tossed aside, be they girls who survived the Indian raids in the late 1880's or girls who were raped then tossed aside.. Or the boy who was running the streets that she just couldn't help save (she didn't even turn him, he wasn't dying) and it's not just humans, dogs, cats.. she has a soft heart and doesn't want anyone to be lost. Which is why her coven remains true to her, she is true to them. She was once a simple village girl, then a warrior for the vampires and now she runs the hottest club in New York.. You might remember her from Undone, she is Marrianne's best friend. Things are pretty darn good, all things considered. Well if you don't count the fact that she hasn't had sex in 300 years. Her entire time as a Vampire, she fell in love for life as a human and has remained true to him. The last thing she ever expected was for him to walk through her door.

Doug Paxton has dreamed of a woman for most of his life. Always the same woman, the same glorious woman. And as he aged the dreams well they got very interesting.. Now he's a cop in New York and bodies are piling up. And they all seem to surround one club, the Coven. When he walks in the door and sees literally, the woman of his dreams he is lost...

Together Doug and Olivia have to find the rogues who are killing the humans and leaving them around New York. The Czar of New York is a bit of a pain in the rear and goes back to Roman Times.. he has his own agenda and has no problem following Orwell's "Some Animals are more equal than Others" Philosophy.. Insert Vampire for Animal and you will see the picture..

Pete is around quite a bit and it's great to see him and hear that Marrianne is a real "bear" while pregnant.. *grins* couldn't help myself. We don't see her at all but Pete has his place in the Vampire world and is loyal to Olivia.. the cast of secondary characters is wonderful and I can't wait to learn more about each and every one of them. Who knows what direction Sara is going to take.. What I can say is it will be a delightful ride.

I loved the way Sara incorporated traditional Vampire tendencies into this story and yes they do have some delightful non traditional aspects so I guess she does have some twists and quirks to her vamps.. The thing with Sara is she has a unique and gifted way of making the unbelievable perfectly believable.. I can totally imagine these individuals running beneath the streets of New York.. And again, I want to say I really want to see this underground New York. So many exciting things happen there. you know Vincent lived there and They found the National Treasure there and... yeah it has to be a totally cool place! Ok back on track!!

Ok back to the book.. A fabulous start to what is going to be a wonderful series..

You had my heart before I was even born.

Olivia has been a vampire for 300 years, and lost the love of her life the night she was changed to a vampire.

Ever since Doug can remember, he was been dreaming of a red-haired siren, never expecting her to be real.

"I feel like I've been looking for you forever - my whole life," he murmured. "Every time you get closer, but no matter how much I get, it isn't enough. I want more. I want it all."

When Doug goes to investigate a murder at Olivia’s night club, both of them are shocked to encounter one another. Olivia because Doug is the spitting image of her dead love, and Doug because Olivia looks just like the siren from his dreams.

I’ve liked Olivia since her first appearance in Undone from The Amoveo Legend series, and I really liked her in this book. She was feisty, loyal and has a very big heart. I loved her dog Van Helsing (how awesome name is that!), and her kitten Oreo.

I really liked that Douglas was captivated by Olivia since the first moment he sees her, and basically struck speechless. That was quite a funny moment.

The most breathtakingly beautiful woman he had ever seen was here, and he stood there staring like a mindless boob.

I really don’t know what a mindless boob stare looks like, but it sure sounds hilarious!

I loved the fact that death could not keep these 2 apart, and how forever meant just that…. Forever. Their romance was very intense, and the ending was just perfect.

Dreams may end, but you and I are in it for eternity.

A lot of great secondary characters were introduced. Olivia’s coven members Maya, Sadie, Trixie, Damien and Suzie, and Pete Castro makes quite a few appearances, which I’m very glad for. I like his new partner Shane Quesada, and can’t wait to read more of him.

This was a good read, and I can’t wait to read the other books in this series.

Tall, Dark, and Vampire is the first book in the Dead in the City series by Sara Humphreys and is scheduled for release on August 6 2013. Olivia Hollingsworth is a vampire, one that has remained faithful to her long dead true love, who died on the night she was turned. Unexplained dreams have kept him close to her heart, and when Doug Paxton walks into her club in order to investigate a murder, his resemblance to her past love is irrefutable. Doug recognized Olivia as the red-haired siren that has been haunting his dreams, and has trouble focusing on the task at hand, at least until more bodies start piling up. Now, the two must work together to discover the truth behind the violent murders and perhaps find real happiness in the process, if they survive.

Tall, Dark, and Vampire was a first for me, I do not remember reading anything by Humphreys in the past, and I liked her take on vampires. Like other groups of people, there are good ones, and ones with a possessive or psychotic personality. The structure of the vampire government and sentries were unique and well built. The personalities and connections between the major players, and the underlying politics that are inherent in the vampire society here are extremely well layered in a way that drew me in. Olivia and Doug are caught up in a plot that threatens their lives, and are struggling to understand the bond between them. The 'mythology' about love bonds and the lengths that some will go to in order to hold power over others are important factors here, and I found them very well done.

I recommend Tall, Dark, and Vampire to readers that enjoy the work of Humphreys, and those that are looking for urban fantasy or paranormal romance with a little more substance than what you might expect. I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes from here.

Oh man I got to put in to words a review!! First let me say this is a spin off from the Amoveo shape shifters series. I loved that this is Olivia's story as she was a character from the last Amoveo book that I also found I loved. She was one of those friends that who had your back no matter what. My kind of girl and kinda reminds me of me(the friendship part of course). Of course that is also what makes Sara's books so awesome is you don't just meet and love the main characters of her books. You also meet other characters that you just can't wait/hope she will write about. She has done this for us again as always. Olivia is a kick-ass vampire is the most awesome way. She treats the vamps she has changed in her coven as family, and shows us in this book. That she will always have their backs if they are honest with her.So yeah new characters for us to obsess over.If you are like me you wonder-will they get their own story and more than likely they will.Just because usually Sara does that to us but well in the best way possible. When murders take place that are seemingly connected with her club. Olivia works to find out who the murder is whether vampire or human. Which brings us to her meeting Doug Paxton. He looks so much like her lost love, the love she is haunted by. Is he her love? or no? You gotta read to find out and let me tell you it is so worth it this book was awesome. I will say there are some nice surprises in store for our Olivia. I can't wait to read more about these vampires, Thank you again Sara for writing such an awesome story.

Olivia has been a vampire for 300 years she has made the best of it and does what she can to help those who are in need of help. She runs a nightclub in NYC called of all things The Coven and she and her small coven work and live there. She was in love when she was turned and her one true love was killed so the entire time Olivia has been a vampire she has also been celibate. Olivia is also a bit unusual in other ways for instance about 20 years ago she started dreaming very hot, sexy dreams about her love the thing is vampires don't dream.

Doug is a cop, a homicide detective, he is good at his job but he can never keep a relationship going with any woman. Doug's problem is that no woman can live up to the smokin' red-head he has dreamed about forever. When he comes across the woman of his dreams she just happens to be all wrapped up in a murder investigation. What's a guy to do.

I loved the perfect mix of murder mystery and hot romance that Tall, Dark and Vampire has. We get an awesome paranormal love story that gives us true love with a side of reincarnation. The push/pull of the hero and heroine not only being on different sides of a murder investigation but also mortal/vampire makes for a lot of juicy dilemmas and plot twists, the whole while there is a sick-o out killing young people who have been out dancing at The Coven and Olivia and Doug must stop it. This has just the right mix of humor, sex, suspense, love and duty. Overall a really great read.

So, first thing I have to say is that this book wasn't bad, but it wasn't OMG yell from the roof tops good either. For me Tall Dark and Vampire was you typical vampire romance and a bit cheesy. The book is about Oliva, a 300 year old vampire so in love with, or maybe guilt ridden, with her deceased fiance that she has been celibate since the day she turned. Then she starts dreaming about her fiance, such vivid dreams, but vampires don't dream, so she writes them off and tries to ignore them. When a guy her coven member drank from turns up dead and the cops start knocking on the door she opens the door to find the lead detective is the reincarnated version of her long lost fiance. There is instant attraction between them because they have after all been dreaming of each other. There is mystery, romance, action, and evil bad guys in this book and I really wanted to like it. It was easy to set down and parts were "come on really" cheesy. Like the ending was so over the top. I liked the message that there is bad in everyone, humans or vampires, and it's how you live that determines who the monsters are. The book did have its moments, but it was the we are destined and very tidy ending that had me rolling my eyes. So while I didn't feel like I wasted my time with Tall Dark and Vampire, it was just an ok book so that I am giving it three laser pistols for a stable orbit.

- Twelve percent in and already I love the loose ties this story has with her Amoveo series. Not enough to be considered a spin off unless of course she is thinking on more books to follow this one.

Just reached the part where the hero was introduced. Humphreys did a great job of introducing the heroine, giving insight about her character without doing an info dump.

- Fifty-percent in - Both the heroine and hero's personality are well established. With Olivia she is the perfect balance of "tough as nails" (aka bad ass) with "Softie" for the outcasts and loss causes. She treats the few she converted as family than pawns to be used. Compassionate when called for obstinate and unyeilding when necessary.

With Doug I was not certain about him. We learn little factors about his life growing up that sort of defines his adult life for the good.

Like with the Amoveo shape shifters Humphreys created a heirarchy for her vampires that is different from all others, unique and all her own. The momentum of the story was neither too slow or fast moving at a good clip.

Overall it was a great introduction to this new world. The characters had enough grit and sass to appease me (okay so I am a sucker for a strong, gusty, sarcastic heroine). And that is something coming from a person (moi) who is not into vampires often finding them blase.

I had only read Ms. Humphreys' first Amoveo book before I read this new release. I have to say she has now hooked me. I am traditionally a Regency historical romance reader, so I approached her books with some trepidation. I will be the first to admit, I loved it. I love Olivia as a heroine, as she is so strong and protective, yet still capable of exuding sex appeal. And Doug? Whew. He sizzles and you can tell he is the perfect mate for Olivia. I enjoyed the world building Ms. Humphrey creates and her writing style is fresh, flowing and easy to read. I can't wait for the next in the series

Vampire Olivia is having a normal work evening running her club, The Coven when cop, Doug Paxton pays a visit. The kicker is he looks exactly like her human lover who died 300 years ago. Passionate Dreams, memories and fierce longing will change both of their lives.

Riveting story. I found Ms. Humphreys writing and characters fresh and exciting. Tall, Dark and Vampire was the perfect remedy to my paranormal reading rut, I loved it. A lot of times in Paranormal Romance you get a male vampire as the lead character, this time it was a female vampire. It made for a nice change. If you enjoyed this author's first series, Amoveo Legend you'll love this new one as well.

More than I was Expecting

Three hundred years ago, Olivia Hollingsworth watched a monster slaughter the only man she ever loved, then was forced to become a monster herself. She's never quite gotten over it.

Sure, being a vampire has its perks, but mostly Olivia just tries to keep her coven, those vampires she's turned and the humans she's saved, safe and gainfully employed at her night club. In all that time, through every thing she's seen and done, with every soul she's saved...one way or another, she has never forgotten the man she gave her heart and body to all those years ago.

For the past two decades, against everything she knows to be true about her kind, Olivia has dreamed of that man. Her Douglas. The one she couldn't save. And then he walks into her club, alive, breathing, and decidedly human, and Olivia's reality takes a quick trip to the land of surreal.

Homicide detective Doug Paxton has a grisly case on his hands, a victim who looks like he was mauled by an animal, the blood drained from his body. All evidence points to the night club near where the body was found. Meeting the owner, however, rocks Doug to his core, because for all that he knows he's never met the deliciously gorgeous Olivia before, he's seen her almost every night for as long as he can remember. In his dreams.

Two souls separated by centuries, divided by more than surface differences, are destined to complete each other in ways neither had ever dreamed. If the forces working against the city's inhabitants and the vampire race itself doesn't kill them both first.

I had some trepidation when I picked up this book. I wasn't a big fan of Humphreys' Amoveo series debut and I was a little worried by this book's title and cover, which gave me the impression of this being a fluffier book than I favor for my paranormal romance. Fortunately, however, that impression was wrong. This is more the sort of darker-edged story that I prefer.

In fact, neither the story nor the characters are anywhere in the vicinity of fluffy, and for almost three-quarters of the book I was highly entertained by the foundations of the gritty world that Humphreys started fleshing out here, as well as the deadly plot and intense characters. I enjoyed the role reversal in the power structure of the relationship between Olivia and Doug. For all that Doug is quite obviously an alpha male, he is human when he's introduced as a character and Olivia is not. She's a former warrior and current savvy business woman, fiercely independent and more than a little jaded about her kind.

She is the power in the relationship and I liked that dynamic between them very much. I was less fond of her three hundred year celibacy, but that was more in how it kept being mentioned. After three hundred years, one would think the subject would be played out, that it would be a moot point, just a fact of Olivia's unlife or whatever, so it didn't feel natural that it kept coming up in the narrative. I get that readers need to be made aware, but a more organic way would have been appreciated.

That was a relatively minor hiccup in my fondness for Olivia's character, however. She's keenly intelligent, loyal to her family, and struggles with the darker side of her nature. I found her interesting and wish the story had provided even more depth to her character, delving into more of her issues with the dark impulses of her kind. She's obviously set herself up as an outsider in her world, and her entire coven are misfits, all survivors of one tragedy or another. I would have loved to have a more comprehensive view of all of that.

With so strong a female lead, I was surprised to find myself liking Doug as much as I did Olivia. Humphreys tread a delicate line in their relationship. Olivia was strong in ways that didn't undermine or contradict Doug's own strength of character, and that thrilled me, but he was also quite endearing, mostly for his butt-over-brains reaction to coming face-to-face with the woman of his dreams. He was so adorably poleaxed by Olivia I couldn't help but be charmed. That he was also a no-nonsense homicide detective with a hella amount of sexy going on just upped his appeal.

Well...I did for most of the book, anyway. My appreciation for Doug as a character in general and as the romantic hero went through a very large change right around the same time he did. Frankly, I thought he was more than a little bit of a douche bag at times in the latter half of the book, and he spouted off some pretty unpalatable plans to address his new condition.

I think I could have accepted that as a part of his character evolution, though, had there been a corresponding evolution of the romance arc surrounding it. As it was, I just couldn't engage in any of the sexy good times between Doug and Olivia so soon after he tossed himself on the not-so-metaphorical pyre and acted like a judgmental, ignorant wanker. And there was a disappointing lack of addressing that issue throughout the end of the book.

Unfortunately, that downturn in the romance coincided with a couple of elements of the external conflict in the plot that didn't appeal to me. For the majority of the book, this was a nicely woven, darkly suspenseful tale with a strong thread of romance tying it all together. Then things went just a step too far down the road of implausible, illogical, and abrupt and I had to shake my head a little.

Beyond my issues with the not-so-fabulously changing Doug, the conclusion to this book was not to my taste. The resolution of several of Olivia's and Doug's life-threatening problems got handed to them on a silver platter that came out of nowhere, and it included some very odd story developments and awkward attempts to hash out a few more quick bits of world building and shady explanation. In a few pages, what had been a dramatic Sword of Damocles hanging over their heads morphed into into a quick, way-too-convenient and tidy conclusion. It was a very uncomfortable deus ex machina that left me feeling confused and a little frustrated.

It was still a better read than I was expecting, though. I didn't have a lot of luck with the Amoveo series. It just wasn't my cuppa, and I was worried this book would also fall short. It didn't, really, even if the ending was too abrupt and clean for me. The larger portion of the book was a lot better than I was expecting and highly entertaining for it all. I may have absolutely no idea what direction the series is heading in - not after that conclusion - but I'd be interested in finding out.

A fun and flirty romance with bite! Tall, Dark, and Vampire has rekindled my love of PNR! Sara Humphreys has taken the vampire mythology and truly made it her own. Olivia and Doug’s romance will steal your heart and leave you wanting more. Don’t let the sexy cover fool you, Ms. Humphreys has woven an intricate new vampire lore that sucks you in (no pun intended!)!

What do you get when a 300 year old celibate vampire club owner and a dark and mysterious detective come together to solve a string of grisly murders in the streets of New York City? A recipe for a page turning mystery and a swoon-worthy romance!

Olivia Hollingsworth has spent her immortality helping others, staying in the shadows and dreaming of her long lost love Doug Threadgood. When a killing spree brings Detective Doug Paxton to her club’s doors, Olivia comes face to face with the man she thought was lost to her forever. Faced with clearing her name and protecting her coven, Olivia must work alongside the man that’s haunted her dreams for years and fight for a second chance at love despite all the odds against her.

I love when an author breaks out of the conventions of the genre and makes her heroine the one who’s paranormal with a human love interest (or at least for a while!), it makes for an interesting story line. Olivia is a great balance of kick ass and femininity, she’s all about business and protecting those around her, but she still has a sexy side when the right man comes along. Liv (as Doug likes to call her) is indeed a tortured heroine, she’s lost her true love and has had to live with the guilt of his death for centuries which has made it difficult to get close to another man. She doesn’t need an alpha male to protect her but her love for Doug is stronger than her pride and there are some cute moments between them where she lets him be the protector.

Every fierce heroine needs a swoon-worthy counterpart and Doug Paxton is the perfect beau for Liv! He’s a stand up detective who has no clue of the supernatural world surrounding his city. When his life is altered and he joins the ranks of the “undead,” Doug is torn between accepting his new world with Olivia and losing his mortality. He’s a bit resentful at first but soon realizes being a vampire along with his training makes him an apex predator. The most interesting aspect of Doug’s transition is how quickly and smoothly it occurs, the revelation as to why is also a shocker I didn’t see coming. Sara Humphreys allows us to experience Doug’s transformation through her vivid storytelling, I almost felt I was there with him!

Although Liv and Doug have a “past” so to speak, their romance is not so instantaneous that it’s not believable. It’s almost as if these two characters meet and fall in love with their true selves the second time around. Yes, there is an immense physical attraction between these two at the start of the book, but I enjoyed the courting and flirty banter they provide before things get serious, it’s a great build up to the sexy scenes. Humphreys also delivers an intriguing mythology of bloodmates and daywalkers that ups the stakes (oops I did it again!) for our couple’s relationship.

The ongoing murder mystery, delightful characters and romance in Tall, Dark, and Vampire effortlessly draw the reader into Humphrey’s Dead in the City world. As a native New Yorker, I can’t help but feel a connection to the the book’s setting of New York City and think it’s perfect for this dark and gritty vampire world. I’m a sucker for a HEA which is almost guaranteed in this genre but felt Olivia and Doug needed a little more story before they sail off into the sunset. All in all I found this book to be the perfect read to delve into after a paranormal romance hiatus. Tall, Dark, and Vampire is a solid start to a promising new vampire romance series I can’t wait to revisit!

I received an ecopy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sara Humphreys' first installment in this spin-off series from her Amoveo novels is unfortunately brief and unconvincing. While the world building and passion will leave readers breathless, TALL, DARK AND VAMPIRE just isn't the most believable romance.

Olivia tries to live a normal life...well, normal considering she is a vampire running a nightclub in New York City. She has spent the last three hundred years pining for the one true love she lost in a brutal murder, but she doesn't know fate has a huge surprise in store for her. When Detective Doug Paxton walks into her club, Olivia is reunited with the man she swore to love for eternity.

Doug may not remember loving Olivia in his past life, but he knows he is finally face to face with the woman that has invaded his dreams for years. As he tries to focus on finding the person responsible for the brutal killings near Olivia's club, he can't help but wonder why she feels so familiar to him. Fate has brought them together again, but this time Olivia won't let anything tear them apart.

If I were to dissect this book in multiple parts, there were plenty of things that I loved. The characters are fun and well crafted, adding interesting personalities to this paranormal world. The people that Olivia surrounded herself with made a great and unique family. They were charming, humorous characters and gave the novel a lighthearted feel. A few will be familiar to fans of Sara Humphreys' Amoveo series, but new readers will have no trouble jumping right into the action.

Another thing I appreciated was the world building. The author uses general vampire lore...some that is kept in traditional form and other things that she gave her own unique twist. It kept this particular journey into the paranormal genre interesting and fresh. TALL, DARK AND VAMPIRE spends plenty of time involved in the action and excitement from this classic good versus evil tale. The lives of her vampire hierarchy and the dark world were beautifully descriptive, leaving me eager to learn how it would develop throughout this series.

The passion and chemistry between Olivia and Doug was delectable. Sara Humphreys can write steamy love scenes that leave you short of breath, but the romance to support it just left me confused. The first half of the book, the two protagonists hardly spent any time together and the second half had too much going on to develop a solid romance. The premise of this instant love connection was supported by a reincarnation plot. I loved this in theory, but it could have been developed and explained just a little bit more. I found myself wanting to know more about Doug's previous life with Olivia and why their bond was so strong now. Yet in TALL, DARK AND VAMPIRE, I felt like I was just supposed to believe they were meant to be together, with nothing to support it.

I read nearly 300 pages, but for as far as the story developing, I felt like I read half that. It seemed as if the lengthy descriptions of the world building left the main characters looking a little flat. Their justifications for various actions throughout the novel just did not match. Doug for instance was furious about his change in circumstances halfway through the book, but one chapter later he miraculously understood everything and all was forgiven. He seemed to move through the motions way too quickly and left me wishing I understood why.

If I didn't have such high expectations for the romance, TALL, DARK, AND VAMPIRE would have been a stellar read for me. The excitement and action from this dramatic vampire world certainly left me satisfied and curious to know more. I would like to believe my disappointment in Doug and Olivia's romance was just a fluke in this case. I was charmed by this undead family and as this series develops, I would love to get to know them all better.

Sara Humphries latest book “Tall Dark and Vampire”, the first in her “Dead in the City” series is a spin off of her “Amoveo Legend” series, but can certainly stand on it’s own if you haven’t had a chance to catch up on those yet. (although I wouldn’t recommend it because it and this review won’t be spoiler free about “Undone” so get to reading! Turn away now if you wish to remain spoiler free about Undone and come back after you are completely caught up... ok, you have been warned!) We first meet Olivia and her Coven of Vampires who run a Nightclub in a converted Manhattan Church in Undone. She assists her friend Marianna Coltari turn her not so human mate Pete Castro into a Vampire while he is at the brink of death. You see, Olivia is a humane Vampire who does not feed on humans or turn them unless there is no other option. When there is a murder that leads the Police back to club, she meets Doug Paxton, the spitting image of her long lost first love, whom she had remained celibate after losing over 300 years ago. Now typically Vampire’s do not have the capability to dream, but there is a legend about finding your “Bloodmate”, and around 20 years ago, Olivia started having dreams about her first love.

Now when Doug first see’s Olivia, he is nearly knocked on his ass because he too has been dreaming about her for the past 20 years, and it took him a long time to wrap his head around the fact that his dream woman was standing in front of him in the flesh. During the investigation, it becomes more difficult to remain professional with Olivia, but the harder he tries, the more drawn he becomes to her. In order to remain in her life, he must sacrifice everything he is, but is he ready to give up this life, for an eternity in another?

Now I don’t want to give too much away but holy amazeballs Batman this story takes my breath away. Sara has a way of turning a romance book into an epic love story! Her version of Manhattan felt so real I literally wanted to hop on the subway and look for “The Coven” just so I could meet my latest book boyfriend Damien the bouncer (now back off ladies, we only meet him and see him for a scantling of a time but when his book comes out I have already called DIBS! Don’t worry, my Steven understands). The cast of characters that we meet, and some that we are already familiar with, are such an eclectic group that you can’t imagine them not being real and rooting for them (I especially love the dwarf vampire, how stinkin cute is he?!?!?!). Now I can count on one hand the number of vampire books that I have read so you can see that they were never really my thing... that is until Miss Sara wrote about them. (I said the same thing about shifters before reading her Amoveo Legend series too). There is just something about the way she writes paranormal books that makes them feel natural and not beyond belief. She is truly and amazing storyteller and I would highly recommend this series to anyone and everyone (dudes included, mayhap they can learn a thing or two, ya know).

I always get serious book hangover after finishing anything by Sara, and this time was no exception. Now I am anxiously waiting for her next Amoveo Legend book “Unclaimed” and the next book in this series “Vampire Trouble”. Do not make haste people. If you can’t run out to the store and get this one right away, download it for your nook or kindle or ipad or samsung, or whatever device you normally read from, hide yourself away from your family and get lost in this wonderful world that Miss Sara has created for you. 5 very enthusiastic thumbs up!

TALL, DARK and VAMPIRE is the first installment in Sara Humphreys new Dead in the City series focusing on the vampires of New York City. Although the series is not necessarily a spinoff from Sara’s Amoveo Legend series about shapeshifters, Tall, Dark and Vampire does have a couple of characters who cross over that give the story a more familiar edge.

Olivia Hollingsworth is a three hundred year old vampire who lost her life and her love the night she was made. Twenty years ago she began having dreams about her former love which isn’t all that bad, but vampires do not dream. And to complicate matters, the dreams were becoming more lifelike and real. But a series of vicious murders leading to a newly made coven of rogue vampires would bring in the NYPD and Olivia’s long lost love, who had died more than three centuries earlier or had he?

Doug Paxton is a NY city police officer and his dreams about a beautiful red-haired woman were coming true the night he walked into The Coven-an nightclub owned by Olivia Hollingsworth-and the woman of his dreams. Together Doug and Olivia would begin the hunt for a coven of rogue vampires, but who was their maker and why was he/she trying to implicate Olivia and her coven in the murders?

Sara Humphreys has written a storyline of second chances and new beginnings in Tall, Dark and Vampire. The reader is taken on a journey through one woman’s centuries of guilt and the need to protect those in harms way or risk everything that she is in doing so. Olivia’s ‘family of vampires’ are a coven of likeable characters and there is definitely a hint of an upcoming storyline for one or two.

Olivia and Doug are relatable and could pass as your ordinary every day human, as well as Olivia’s coven of vampires and friends. Although Doug is at first reticent to accept the situation, he will quickly learn that to be with the woman who has captured both his heart and his soul, he must accept what is, even if he must sacrifice himself, to save the woman he loves.

Sara Humphreys brings the world of the Amoveo Legend into Tall, Dark and Vampire with the appearance of half-demon/half-vampire Pete and in doing so, brings some familiarity into the storyline for fans of Sara and her beloved shapeshifting series.

As an introductory storyline, Tall, Dark and Vampire had just enough world building to peak the interest of any reader including a little bit of history behind the first vampire and the governing body of the Presidium. If you like a story with a little bit of sex, a little bit of romance and a little bit of mystery, Tall, Dark and Vampire is a must read for fans of the paranormal storylines.

Tall, Dark, and Vampire has a storyline so well written you will just breathe in every word as you anxiously turn the pages waiting to see where it will take you next.

Olivia Hollingsworth loved her life and her fiancé with all her heart and soul. Neither she or her fiancé Douglas Threadgood had any idea the night they snuck off into the wood their lives would be changed forever. In one instant violent moment the man she swore to love for all eternity was dead and she should have been next, instead the very monster responsible had taken her and turned her into vampire.

Doug Paxton is a New York City Detective sworn to protect and serve, he knows this is what he was born to do. Doug always found although he was great at his job the same could not be said about his personal life. He had been having dreams of a woman most of his life and it seemed although he could commit in his dreams real life was a different matter.

Olivia has lived a quite life since breaking ties with her maker at the end of her service. She now owns and runs a night club called The Coven and keeps only those she has sired or trusts around her. On a call out to a brutal crime Doug and his Partner Tom receive information that leads them to The Coven a local club the man attended. When Doug comes face to face with the club's owner he is less than prepared for what he finds, but he is sure this is only the start of these gruesome attacks and Olivia and her club are somehow involved. Doug and Olivia will need to pool their recourses' and knowledge to get ahead of the murders that are occurring if they are to save the people of New York and Doug will need to accept that not all is as it seems if he is to save Olivia from what she is about to endure.

I look forward to reading many more of Sara Humphreys' books and would recommend if you love paranormal or vampire romance you pick up Tall, Dark, and Vampire you won't be disappointed!!

Olivia Hollingsworth is a 300-year-old vampire. She had spent her 1st 100 years with her maker and another 100 years serving as a sentry for the Presidium/Vampire Council. Now she proudly runs "The Coven," a very popular night club in Greenwich Village with her own coven of vamps and humans. On this particular night, she feels a heightened sense of impending doom...

When Olivia finds two detectives at her club's entrance, she is shocked to discover that one of the detectives, Doug Paxton, is the spitting image of her fiance, the love of her life, who died the night she was turned. Stranger still, she has been dreaming of him for the last 20 years - that's in spite of the fact that vampires don't dream. The news the two detectives have brought could be devastating to her club and her coven: a customer from the night before has been found drained and dead. Now she must find a way to protect her coven, their livelihood, and fight her attraction to Doug.

I loved this book! Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down staying up until 3am to finish it. Most of the vamp stories I've read have very strong male vamps; Tall, Dark and Vampire has a kick-ass female vamp heroine. I really liked the characters AND animals in her coven and am hoping that we don't have to wait very long for Damien's own book!!!!!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys paranormal stories, especially those who love their vamps (like me)! I am certainly looking forward to where Sara takes this series!

Sara Humphreys’ writing just gets better and better. Her Amoveo series is great but Tall Dark and Vampire (Dead in the city) is her best so far. This is great classic paranormal romance. The story is about Olivia Hollingsworth and her long lost, as in dead, former lover Doug Paxton. Olivia is a strong independent vampire who runs her own nightclub with the help of her vampire coven. She is 3 centuries old and has a history in vampire law enforcement. She is tough but full of empathy for any creature in dire straits. Doug is a cop who’s good at his job, a human in his third decade, but he is an old soul. The two have been dreaming about each other not aware that there was basis in reality until the night Doug investigates a murder committed near Olivia’s nightclub. The vampire society Sara has created is well thought out. The politics and subterfuge in the story create great mystery and angst. This is a full length novel that is well edited. It has fast paced action that would make a great movie even men would enjoy. It has its moments in the bedroom too which is why I read this stuff. Heehee. The story has a very satisfying end and I look forward to reading the future books in this series. My only problem with this book is the title, Doug is blonde and Olivia is a red head. Go figure.

Wow this was good. A little predictable on who the bad guys are and the good guys' reward. That aside...

This is an extremely well written book. It kept me at the edge of my seat and I was at a point literally biting my nails - and I'm not a nail biter. The UST (Unresolved sexual tension) was through the roof and when they hooked up, a little on the disappointing side. I feel like the smut was a little glossed over. But it fits the mood of the book, so I'm not going to complain about that.

Tall, Dark, and Vampire really is captivating and worth every penny you pay for it. Right now, I can't wait to get started on the next book, and the one thing that is bumming me out, is that once I'm done with that book, there is a helluva long wait before book 3 is out. 5 months...

I adore Olivia, she's the kind of kick ass leading lady that makes the book a joy to read. She's strong, smart and not afraid to be vulnerable and let someone else take the lead every now and then. Doug... I want a Doug. He's the kind of leading man you just want to latch onto and not let go. :D

The plot is good, albeit a little predictable, the pace is great and my biggest beef with this book is that it's not long enough. I'd be happy to read a couple hundred more pages. So far, loving this author.

I gotta say I really liked this book. The world-building was excellent, the characters were a great mix of funny and awesome and the writing was very well-done. It kept my attention through out the entire story. A few times I felt as if things/characters/scenes might be getting a little repetitive (like Olivia mentioning that she's never gotten over her last love), but then BAM! the author would throw in a great plot-twist.

Yes, this is a vampire book, but let's face it - I like vampire books! And this one was very well-done. The main character, Olivia is a 300 year old vampire running the hottest night club in NY, The Coven. Yes, they know it's a clique but the humans are flocking to their doors anyway. Not that they know real vampires are pouring their drinks, or spinning their dance tunes, or walking among them at the VIP tables. Olivia however is lonely. Three hundred years is a long time to carry a torch for an old flame. But at least she can see him in her dreams, except that vampires aren't supposed to dream. One night when a detective shows up at her doors looking exactly like her beloved deceased finace, well, things get a little more lively.

I really enjoyed Olivia and Doug's journey and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of Olivia's coven get their Happily Ever Afters.

Tall, Dark, and Vampire is the first book in the Dead in the City series by Sara Humphreys. Olivia Hollingsworth is a vampire, one that has remained faithful to her long dead true love, who died on the night she was turned. Unexplained dreams have kept him close to her heart, and when Doug Paxton walks into her club in order to investigate a murder, his resemblance to her past love opens her mind to the memories they shared as lovers, friends and mates. I couldn't put it down and read it in four hours.
The writing was amazing and the story keeps you in suspense waiting for what is going to happen next. She is a protector who will do whatever is necessary to protect those she cares about. She hides her soft side to protect herself. She is a fierce fighter, a friend and always available to protect those who have fallen prey to the vicious vampires. Doug is a human, a detective who is investigating the brutal recent murders in the community. He is an amazing, handsome macho guy many women wish they had. He protects Olivia and feels a connection with her but has not figured out the reason for this connection. Olivia is forced to turn him in order to save his life. Finally they both discover that their love has endured all their years of separation. Fantastic story.
