Rate this book
Hard Power—the follow-up to the electric Hard Exit—is a riveting new thriller from bestselling author J. B. Turner.

When Amy Chang, partner of NSA hacker Trevelle Williams—a friend of Jon Reznick—is found dead on a Manhattan subway, everyone says it was a suicide. But Trevelle knows that someone had been watching Amy’s every move, and he isn’t about to let them slip away.

Trevelle calls on Jon Reznick to help him uncover what happened to Amy and protect Amy’s brother, Kevin Chang, a Hong Kong student-activist living in New York. Before long, two government organizations are hunting them, forcing the trio to go on the run. Will Reznick be able to pull himself out of another mess, or have things finally gone too far?

As his pursuers close in, Reznick reaches out to Martha Meyerstein, FBI assistant director, for help—but with so many political forces at play, people are not always who they seem to be. With friends’ lives on the line, Reznick will have to summon all his black-ops skills, tradecraft, and killer instincts to keep both Trevelle and Kevin alive…but he might have to sacrifice his own life to do it.

Hard Power is the twelfth instalment of the Jon Reznick series about a former CIA officer the books assassin, and one of my favourite of the series so far. I’ve read them all in order but it’s not essential to follow the story - although the key relationship would make more sense if you’ve read at least some of the previous books.

Reznick is asked to help find the killer of his young hacker friend Trevelle’s girlfriend, a dissident from Hong Kong, who has been killed by agents of the Chinese government in New York. When events rapidly turn violent, Jon and his friends must go on the run from his former allies at the FBI - putting him at odds with his former lover Martha.

Sometimes by this stage in a series, authors can start to run out of ideas, and I was almost ready to give up a couple of books ago, but am glad I didn’t as this was a fast-paced exciting read that has Reznick facing an implacable and powerful new enemy - China. The lengths their spies are willing to go to in order to take out so-called enemies of the state felt plausibly scary, including corrupting FBI agents and impersonating rescue services. I felt most sorry for poor Martha Meyerstein, her loyalties impossibly split, her career threatened after decades of service for political expediency. The ending here wraps things up in a way that could mean the end of the series - but I hope not!

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC. I am posting this honest review voluntarily. Hard Power is available now.

Firstly only a few books and authors obtain a five star rating from me.

JB Turner is nearly always one of those authors, his Jon Reznick books are at the top of the action thrillers series, I blame JB Turner why I am so tired this morning after reading and finishing the last 35% of the book in one section.

This book deals with a frightening and realistic and scary scenario of the future, maybe the present.

An absolutely a page turned, fast action packed, powerful and sadly very realistic with everything betrayal, politics, chaos, espionage, filled with everything.

I love action thrillers and JB Turner is in my top twelve of action thriller authors, alongside Mark Dawson, David Baldacci, Mark Greaney, Ben Coes, Simon Kernick, Mason Cross, Tom Wood, Greg Hurwitz, James Carr, Kerry J Donovan, Steve Konkoly, and could list another twenty.

Hard Power" by J. B. Turner, the twelfth installment in the Jon Reznick series, is a high-octane thriller that had me hooked from the first page. When Trevelle's partner, Amy Chang, is found dead on a Manhattan subway, the circumstances scream foul play, setting off a chain reaction of political intrigue and danger. Turner weaves a complex web of corruption involving the Chinese government, the FBI, and a former NSA hacker.
The plot is suspenseful and fast-paced, with Reznick facing not only external threats but also the unsettling discovery of corruption within the ranks of those meant to protect. The dynamics between characters, particularly Reznick and Martha Meyerstein, add depth and emotion to the narrative. As Reznick races against time, the story unfolds with gripping intensity, keeping me on the edge of my seat.
“Hard Power" is a great addition to the series, delivering the relentless action and intrigue that fans have come to expect from Turner's masterful storytelling.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley, opinions are my own

Well, this one is a bit overdone. Reznick has gone pretty much too far this time. Anyway, fun action but the hard power thing is too over the top.

I've read quite a few Jon Recnick books and I enjoyed Hard Power by J.B. Turner, but like most, a slightly different plot and characters. Plenty of action, deceit, and of course the greedy government employees'.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC of this novel.

I absolutely love this series and this latest release is no exception. Jon Reznick's friend and hacker Trevelle is the one who calls Jon for help this time, a far cry from the norm. However, the situation Trevelle finds himself in is far from the ordinary. Trevelle's girlfriend Amy Chang is found dead and he is convinced, along with Amy's brother Kevin, that it was no accident. Although Jon has no jurisdiction he as per the norm sticks his nose in to try and get to the bottom of what has gone on. It becomes clear pretty quickly that the situation Jon, Trevelle and Kevin find themselves in proves the theory that all is not right!

There is plenty of action pretty much from the off with this latest book and as usual Jon is determined for the truth even if it means falling out with the FBI assistant Martha (which he does plenty of)! I was a little on the fence with how the Jon and Martha relationship has played out but a part of me also understands the need for it. That aside I loved the pacing of the story and there was plenty of corruption and action top keep you entertained. Although there is a slight swerve into the arena featuring Chinese politics, I can forgive it as it didn't detract from my enjoyment. I just hope we don't see the author going politics heavy in future books.

Overall this is a fast paced and action packed story with a character you can't help but love. A great series which I am thoroughly enjoying and would happily recommend.

J.B. Turner's Hard Power (Thomas & Mercer 2024), twelfth in the Jon Reznick Thriller series, had a lot of potential. The Chinese national sister of a friend of Reznick's, himself a former NSA hacker, is murdered on the NY subway, but no one believes it wasn't an accident except her brother and her boyfriend, Trevelle. She had been worried about being stalked and threatened with her life for leaving China. When she dies, Trevelle calls Reznick for help and it doesn't take long for things to escalate. Soon, Chinese bad guys threaten to kill the brother which Reznick solves by killing them. The FBI doesn't believe it is self-defense and wants Reznick to turn himself in while they investigate. The problem is, the more Reznick digs into this murder, the more DC and FBI corruption he finds, as well as unchecked Chinese law-breaking that even Reznick's sometimes girlfriend, Martha Meyerstein, in the FBI seems unwilling to believe.

I wanted to love this book as I have all the others in the series. I wanted to see Reznick and his cadre of talented cohorts deal with the treachery that threatened to sink justice. At times, the story was clever, but often it got stuck in backstory and emotion. The plot seemed to become as much about saving Martha’s career and analyzing her relationship with Reznick as saving America. This was a serious change of attitude for Martha, an FBI character I have liked in the past. I began to wonder if the author was running out of ideas for the fast moving pieces that in the past, always made this book difficult to put down. There were a lot of places in the story where motivations were rehashed and ideas repeated which bled the energy out of the story. It seemed to stall often where it never did in earlier books.

Overall, I'll read the next because I remember the good books, but I hope the fast-paced indominable Reznick returns for the next in the series.

After finding his "deceased" wife alive in the previous volume, Reznick is called by Trevelle Williams, his hacker friend, to investigate the suspicious death of Williams's girlfriend, a Chinese immigrant. It soon become apparent that something nefarious is going on.

This book follows the usual pattern of Reznick identifying a serious problem, the authorities denying that there is a problem, then blaming the man who has saved countless lives and stopped unnumbered plots against the US for the problems. At some point, even the most clueless government drone would presumably figure out that Reznick is unlikely to be at the root of the problems. The government reaction to the problem is unreasonable on nearly every level, but it's fairly consistent within the established world of the series.

The supporting characters are weaker than usual this time, with Trevelle not performing to his usual standard, and Martha distancing herself throughout the book. The writing for both does not feel true to their previously established personalities.

I could believe the basic setup for the story. It seems unlikely, but not so unlikely that it broke my suspension of disbelief. That said, the way that the threat escalated became rapidly less believable

The end of the story was done fairly well, with a new character that I hope will show up in future volumes.

The writing was fairly good, in particular, Turner does action scenes well. Though it's worth noting that there is no nitroglycerin in gunpowder.

Overall, this was a very uneven story. The good parts were done well, but the weak parts were very weak indeed. There is not enough wrong here to cause me to drop the series, but nor is there enough that I would specifically recommend this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for a review.

Hard Power is a thriller novel by J.B. Turner. The story follows Jon who we first meet when he sends his daughter off at an airport for her next adventure.

The initial selling points that intrigued me into requesting this book were the covers interesting design and the summary/blurb. It seemed right up my alley and like the book I would love. I did appreciate the story that was being told and how it progressed. I would say the prologue (Chapter before the first chapter) was well written and managed to get me hooked and kept me locked onto my screen, wanting to know what happens next. Unfortunately, the things that I loved about the book stopped there.

Onto the least pleasant part of the review, the negatives. I would say I found it hard to read/keep reading midway through the first chapter. I had a strong urge to stop reading and it was probably to do with how the book was written at that point, descriptions were minimal to the point where I could scarcely recall a single scene within the story, with the dialogues not even an action tag or dialogue tag, leading to confusion as to who is talking at the time. It just seemed a bitt dry in my opinion. I really tried to keep reading but I had to stop due to the dry dialogues. Had the descriptions been written with more details. I would have definitely read on.

The writing style probably wasn’t for me, but I do think others would find this book to their liking. I’d rate this book a three out of five stars overall for the reasons above.

I was looking for a decent thriller to plough through and, even though this is part of a series, I thought it sounded like it might fit the bill - generally speaking this type of series generally lets a reader pick any book up in any order and be able to follow along - in that regard, there were enough throwbacks to previous books/storylines to ground me in who the main character was.
The book opens with a lot of promise - we have a murder that looks like an accident, and a father bidding farewell to a daughter heading to a potentially dangerous assignment abroad. Turner doesn't delay dragging us into the action and what follows is a fairly stereotypical spy novel that trundles along to its conclusion. That's actually my main problem with it, I got no real sense of urgency from the action - perhaps because a lot of it was told, rather than shown. And there was an awful lot of repetition - it seemed like every page we had character A, B or C telling us that they were sad/stressed/angry etc and repeated, detailed callbacks to incidents that the reader read about in the beginning of the book - we don't need to be reminded of a murder, it should be pretty memorable in its own right!
It was also very straightforward - there were no strong twists or turns, nothing to raise the eyebrow and make you wonder where it was going. It's not a bad read; it just, to me, felt like a skeleton of a book that could have done with a bit more meat on the bones.
My thanks to the publishers and author for a review copy of this book, via NetGalley.

This is the 12th book in the Jon Reznick series, but the first I've read. There are references to events and characters from the previous books in the series, but nothing that will materially affect the ability to follow along with this story and plot.

Called in by a friend to help an immigrant from Honk Kong who fears for his life, Reznick answers the call and almost immediately finds himself killing 3 Chinese, 2 of whom turn out to be diplomats. Through his contact in the FBI, Jon offers to turn himself in in exchange for a guarantee that the Honk Kong immigrant won't be deported. That guarantee is not forthcoming and so a hunt is on for Jon, his friend and the immigrant, against a backdrop of Chinese infiltration of the United States and their attempts to silence, intimidate and/or kill Chinese dissidents.

I read this book on a flight and it was the perfect material for it. The writing is fine with good pacing and if you're somewhat distracted it's fine because the book won't change your life (although it does try to make you aware of the dangers the United States faces from China. If you're not aware of that, maybe it will change your life :) ).

The book is fine for this type of reading, but it doesn't make me want to go out and immediately read the rest of the series. It's light reading to pass the time.

There was 1 miscue that stuck out only because it seemed to be emphasized: whose office was Martha temporarily using? I'll leave it at that.

Author J.B. Turner turns up the adrenaline and consequences for Jon Reznick's thriller "Hard Power." The intensity begins immediately when Reznick's despondent buddy Trevelle calls him and says his girlfriend has been murdered, pushed into the path of a subway train in New York. Trevelle wants answers. The pair meet up and go see the girlfriend's brother, Kevin. But when they arrive at his apartment, Kevin is on his knees with a gun pointed at his head. Reznick does what he's been trained to do. He takes out the threat, secures the victim and removes any further threat, killing two others who draw on him on the way out of the apartment building. Turns out the kill team was Chinese and two had diplomatic papers. Reznick is vilified. He's considered to have gone rogue. Martha Meyerstein, who normally provides his cover as ranking executive of the FBI, abandons him. He's gone too far this time. But Reznick has his moral compass. He supports residents of the United States even if they just have a green card and happen to have supported democracy in Hong Kong. He can't be intimidated even by well-meaning members of his own country. The narrative is especially explosive and entertaining. After spending two months on my previous book, which was a beast size-wise, this one only took a couple days.

Apparently this is the 12th Jon Reznick book in a series, but this is my first one. It wont be my last. And the fact that there are previous books in the series did not impact my enjoyment of this book. It was great as a stand alone thriller.

Trevelle is a hacker with a Chinese girlfriend. She falls onto the train tracks and dies. But did she fall or was she pushed?

There were some really enjoyable characters in this book – Trevelle and Jon were great and I am looking forward to going back in this series to get to know them.

There was a good dead of action and the pacing was perfect.
I thought the story and the way that it unfolded was great.

So why not 5 stars? I really enjoyed this and read it one sitting, but I didn’t finish and say “wow”. I am going to read more books in this series, and can really see this as a movie. However, there were a few little things that bothered me- such as the characters telling you how they feel, rather than demonstrating it.

Thank you to the author, the publisher and to #netgalley for the ARC and for helping me find a new author to binge. But this did not impact my review

I received an ARC through "NetGalley" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

In this latest book, Jon is leaving his daughter at the airport as she starts her new CIA assignment in Jakarta. Once Jon is home, he receives a call from his friend Travelle who wants his help. He returns to NYC and learns that Travelle's girlfriend has been killed. He wants Jon to help Amy's brother. Once he learns more, they go to Kevin's apartment where they discover that someone is holding a gun on Kevin and Jon winds up killing the person. Jon discovers that there are others waiting and winds up shooting them. Unfortunately, all of the victims are part of the Chinese delegation and Jon and the other two are now wanted.

Follow the story aas Jom tries to avoid being captured and learn who assists him along the way. Find out what happened and how Jon handles the events that arose during the chase and his apprehension. Discover why and what happens in the end that pertains to Amy and Kevin and how everything works out in the end. You won't want to miss this one.

I have read a number of J.B. Turner’s Jon Reznick books, and had taken a break from the series because the books had started sounding the same to me. Coming back to Hard Power, I was reminded of all the things that had initially drawn me to the books in the first place. J.B. Turner’s insight into the geopolitical threats and challenges of today’s world creates compelling stories and Jon Reznick is the uncompromising, brave, and principled hero that makes me root for him and his success by any means necessary. I enjoyed Hard Power, the author’s consideration of Chinese political activity in the U.S., the fast-paced action, and the jeopardy attached to the plot. I was slightly disappointed with the treatment of Martha Meyerstein’s character in this one and found many of the dialog passages throughout the story stilted and ineffective. They didn’t seem up to par with the books I’ve read in the past, but not enough to prevent me from anticipating the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Trevelle Williams calls his longtime friend Jon Reznick when his Chinese girl friend Amy Chang has been pushed under the subway in New York City. Amy's brother Kevin is now worried that he too will be killed. They had been activists in Hong Kong, and made their way to New York and now had green cards. However, now the Chinese diplomats are after them. Reznick goes to NY and when Trevelle takes Jon to where Kevin is hiding out, they find two Chinese men with guns pointed to Kevin. Resnick kills both Chinese, and begins driving Trevelle and Kevin up north. They finally get away from NY and find a hiding place with a friend of Trevelle. However, when Resnick calls to FBI assistant director Martha Meyerstein, she tells others and Resnick is arrested.

Can Resnick find someone who believes him and save Kevin from his sister's fate? This is a very exciting great great addition to the Reznick series. I thank Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the opportunity to read an ARC before publication.

Former (but is he ever really former?) CIA & Delta Force, Jon Reznick is back on the attack again. This time he is protecting Kevin Chang, a dissident that the Chinese government wants returned to China. Kevin has been living in the states with his sister Amy, who was recently murdered. Having worked with Jon before, Amy’s boyfriend Trevelle Williams, contacts him for help protecting Kevin. Jon tries to go through legal channels with his long-time friend, Martha Meyerstein, the assistant director of the FBI. When he is stone walled, he goes out on his own. He receives unexpected assistance from a friend of Trevelle’s, writer Caroline Sullivan, but will he be able to guarantee their safety? John is used to continued threats on his life, but as the body count rises, former teammates who have served with him in far out foreign places step up. Jon realizes that he is up against “hard power”! Non-stop action from the very first page! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

It was a blessing to reach the end of this one. Started promisingly but gradually went down hill. Had to skip-read large chunks where the descriptions of self analysis and doubt went on and on. Have followed Reznick throughout the series; its maybe time for him to retire. The action when it occurred was quite exciting. However the pages and pages of introspection by nearly all characters was draining and just served to slow the plot although plot may be an exaggeration. Reznick and protectees have to keep on the run from homicidal Chinese agents. Every hiding place is compromised by the ( now almost obligatory in books of this type ) corrupt individuals in the alphabet agencies. No real problem for good ol' Rez though; he can defeat whatever the baddies throw at him without hardly breaking sweat.

Geopolitics

The whole concept of the plot, centering wholly geopolitics is rare in a fictional story, how is very much in the mainstream world we live in, in this day and age.

What appeared to be a one off incident, to a friend of the main protagonist, turns out to be much more serious of espionage, and acts of aggression on American soil with the use of sleeper cells.

Although it feels like the end of the series that I enjoy, the ending of the FBI involvement and his relationship with the assistant director, makes me feel like there is a few twists and turns that will come out of the other end.

What transpires is a deep level of corruption that can be taken advantage of.

JB Turner normally has the pacing and story of his novels just right, so it was a little bit surprising that the tone of this story came across as a bit preachy and green politics, an area that he never seems to address.

It didn’t detract too much from the story and certainly not enough to reduce a star, but it was a minor annoyance all the same.

Having voiced my irritation, I have to say that it was read in two sittings, as his books normally are for me, and I came away entertained and regretting reading it so quickly.

A surprising betrayal added a neat twist but Turner just delivers, every time.

Whew boy...John sure stepped into it in this one and just by trying to help a friend. It's crazy how things went from helping his friend to being in hot water so fast. From there John and the friend were on the run trying to stay alive and one step ahead of the threat coming for them. They found help in unexpected places and were betrayed by unexpected people. In the end, for "National Security" so much was swept under the rug, but at least John and his friends were safe, even as some relationships were severed. Yet right at the end, there does seem to be a bright spot for John. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

What can anyone say when it comes to saying anything about Turner’s Reznick? I’m hard-pressed! This is a carefully written and orchestrated novel about all things bad in our world today as it focuses upon China and the idiots in DC. Turner gets it! We are being played by the Chinese. Well, duh! The only ones who don’t get that are in the White House basement hoping Barack will save him. Nice try. Toss a “righteous” man into 5he foray and oops! He’s blamed for everything that’s wrong with 5he US. Nice try. Best part…Caroline! 2gat a teaser Turner tossed in! I was glad. Reznick needs a Lady like her. It’s his “adult supervision.”

Is this the end for Jon?

I had a constant feeling that this is the end of this series. Somehow after all these books you just get the same feeling every time. Not to mention what Martha did was totally obnoxious - like she got poisoned in her office and they broke in ro an FBI office to kill Reznik, but she's still mad at him?! Like seriously :)) Yes, he killed those guys but in any other case they would've shot him down without regrets. Not to mention the whole romantic line, they barely did anything to warrant such charges from anyone..

As I said before, I don't see any direction in which this story can be developed further - but let's see what happens :)

I initially wasn't sure if I would like this book but I came around. I have read most of this series and they are all good. This one Jon Reznick is called down to NY to help a friend support someone who lost their sister and his friend Trevelle who lost a girlfriend to mysterious circumstances. It started a little far fetched but the action and the involvement of the Chinese and their attempt to silence any dissidents carried the day. Reznick's conscience is something you can always count on and his desire to right the wrongs made this a good book.

There are some twists in this one I was surprised to see. A new character that looks to be sticking around, oh and the presumed-dead-but-not-really-dead-but-a-CIA-agent-in-hiding-wife from book 11 is around, sorta.

I like how Jon is has evolved, understanding how he has changed, his abilities have changed as he has aged, as well as how he views situations has changed - some. There was one small annoyance with a character just disappearing halfway through, but in the end didn't make a huge difference.

As always, a good read.

Happy Reading!

Excellent addition to an addictive series. Jon Reznick plays by his own rules: right is right; wrong is wrong; shoot first, and get names later. In this episode, he starts off protecting a Chinese dissident, and ends up uncovering and disposing of various assets unfriendly to the United States. Along the way, he alienates many while burning some important bridges. I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an hour review.

Captivating thriller,,Reznick seeing his daughter leave for two year's overseas.
Wanting solitude now, when he gets a call. His friend wanting his support and
help to come to. New York.
This book held my attention from the beginning, a roller coaster of action to the end. I enjoy the authors books, and highly recommend this one.

This series never disappoints. WOW. could not put this book down once I started. While this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but if you're read the previous books it helps connect the relationships a little more.
This book had a little less action in the middle, but the plot was just as exciting as ever. absolutely love this series, and am already looking forward and hoping there is a next.
