The Haidren Legacy #3

House of Boreal

Rate this book
BEHIND THE MASK OF TRUTH AND HONOR, LIES SOW A CORRUPTED CREED...

Hunted and horrified, the Quadren escapes to the mist-choked House of Boreal—a remote highland citadel shrouded by harrowing tales of the occult. Meanwhile, mortal lies flood the crown city and propaganda plagues the streets. Insurgents infiltrate Bastiion, each lobbying for the vacant throne.

When Luscia returns to her homeland, she must convince the Elder Enclave to relinquish their elite warriors to Dmitri’s cause. In playing politics with her own people, the line between faith and zealotry quickly erodes, as does Luscia’s trust in her secretive aunt. As disappointment and rancor batters her from all sides, Luscia commits sacrilege and searches the brilliant power she’s struggling to control for the answers her mentor refuses to give, desperate to save Orynthia’s king before it’s too late.

Zaethan never thought he’d march his kinsmen into their place of nightmares. Yet marked a bastard refugee, he wears the issue of his heritage like a brand. Within the storied fortress of Roüwen, he and the Darakaians are met with untried hostility, and when a woman goes missing, the already fragile peace fractures. Persecution endangers everyone he loves. As loyalties splinter, Zaethan battles to prove his leadership to his prydes. Even more to himself.

Rivals turned reluctant rebels, both haidrens share a naivete to the changing shadow, to evil taking form. For it is the highlands where legend streams into reality—and in Boreal where when an ancient wrath is reborn, a more dangerous bright awakens.

The Series
House of Boreal is the third installment in the epic fantasy series, The Haidren Legacy. K.L. Kolarich

4 books465 followers
Throughout her life, K.L. Kolarich never expected to become a bestselling and award-winning epic fantasy author, nor one based out of Nashville, TN. But growing up in Metro Detroit, Kolarich developed a deep love for eclectic variety as well as the underappreciated. Both themes readily present throughout her treacherous series, The Haidren Legacy.

An individual plagued by sarcasm, conviction, and a constant distraction of fable and lore, K.L. Kolarich dreams in the day and writes through the night. Often hearing her characters argue in the background, Kolarich stifles the daily temptation to abandon reality and lose herself in the realm of Orynthia.

When fully present in the real world rather than another, Kolarich explores local waterfalls, habitually frequents the same Thai restaurant, adds to her ever-growing spice collection, and maintains a thoroughly messy kitchen for the sake of colorful vegan feasts.

With too many cats and not nearly enough wine, Kolarich resides in the woods away from the noise, happily married.

4.25⭐️ ugh, this series is just so good. I probably should have reread books 1&2, but it felt like too much of a commitment at the time. I will definitely reread before book 4. This world and these characters are so fleshed out, it amazes me. While some things were answered, more questions arise. There’s one thing I keep waiting for and every time I think it’s about to happen, a wrench is thrown!!! In book 4 I better get it, or I will riot 😭

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest spoiler-free review.

Can I just begin by saying how happy I am to finally have this book ! I've binged the first two books in the 2022 summer and loooved them ! The wait has been killing me ever since ! (And now the wait for book 4 will be killing me too :'( ).

I must say though, that finishing this book has taken me longer than expected. I think it lost a lot of momentum compared to the second book. I was expecting things to take off after where we left them in book 2 but on the contrary, the all book (except maybe the very ending) was really more of a retreat. If I forget my expectations for a bit, I can see why it was needed and to some extend I appreciate it, but the pacing was still a little off for me sometimes and I don't think we needed an entire book of it, especially one this long. It almost feels like a filler book : in terms of plot we didn't progress at all and that's a bit frustrating.
That being said : I also think some of that frustration (which is a theme of this book really) is wanted : it's kind of realistic, you share the frustration of the characters too : we all want to go to war immediately but hey !.... Politics !

I say frustration is a theme of this book because there's also some frustration around Luscia's character and again the author plays with your expectations and confronts them to reality. After Zaethan's incredible character development (and I'll come back to that because it continues beautifully in this book!) we're kind of expecting the same thing from Luscia but Luscia isn't Zaethan. And it makes perfect sense that coming back to the place of her trauma and the people linked to it she would take a step back. Her arc is raw and realistic, but when she has a breakthrough it's all the more satisfying ! And I love where we left her by the end of this book ! Really excieted for her character in the next book !
Kolarich does a great job with her main characters ; I love Zaethan and Luscia so much ! Zaethan is currently my favorite though : which illustrates how far he's come because in book one I wasn't sure about him. I love how he is embracing other cultures now, trying to understand them, how he is trying to be his own man, to write his own story, to find himself and earn his place.
I loved that we got to see more of Phalen and Orien : I had the feeling they were amazing characters and they indeed were ! Their relationship with Luscia is so heartwarming ! Declan is also quickly becoming my favorite side character !! I LOVE him !!! (The fact that he's clearly a Zaethan x Luscia shipper might be part of it I confess !). I'm even begining to like Marek ! Which complicates things because now I feel bad for him regarding Luscia buuuut ... I believe we got a hint that maybe another notherner will be better for him, so he might still get his happy ending, just not with Luscia !
Because Luscia is destined to be with Zaethan !! I LOOOOVE them in this book, I love that Zaethan is not giving up and I love how he is going about it. He's so good for her : pushing her to her limits, making sure she's free to be herself and proud instead of ashamed. He won't debase himself for her but he's also making sure he gave a real chance at their relationship. His way of doing it shines all the more in contrast with the Figure's flashbacks. Zaethan is THE MAN ! Their chemistry is incredible and the angst is sooo good ! (and OMG Zaethan has a way with words too ! Those dance scenes.... Hot hot hot !)
Speaking of the Figure, the flashbacks actually didn't help me like him or Alora more... I hate their relationship, I always found his devotion to her creepy and toxic. I felt like maybe he was getting out of it in the last book but it felt worse in this book... And don't get me started on Alora ! I HAAATE her !! She's such an hypocrite and to be honest, I find that she's boderline abusive towards Luscia... In some regards I feel like Alora and the Figure are the villains of the story too.
They're more compelling than the other villains at least : I'm still not sold on that front.
I'll finish this really messy review (sorry !) by pointing out one of the best things in this series : the worldbuilding ! It's incredible ! I was already in love with Darakai in the last book, how vivid and alive it was. I thought nothing could top the Ceremony of The Hands and yet... Boreal was just as magical and vivid too especially with the Fete : I could really see it with all the colours and the music.... MAGICAL !! This world really is one of the most detailed, complete and vivid one I've read in fantasy !

To resume (which I feel is needed after this looong review ) : the plot and pacing didn't work as well for me in this book but the characters, their relationships, the romance and the worldbuilding were excellent ! I'm really excited for the next books !! Go read this series if you haven't already : it needs waaay more hype ! It's better that the majority of what is currently out there and it's criminal that it doesn't get more hype !

OMG. The plot thickens... first of all, you learn so much in this book! Problem is, more questions are raised. I want to know more! I can't wait for the next book!

This book includes LOTS of tension, plenty of "ah ha!" moments, and a great deal of wonder (we are finally in Boreal and it does NOT disappoint!). I must say, though, it really excels in the characters. We get to really fall in love with these characters and watch them grow. The characters have so much diversity and it's so great seeing all the different relationships develop. You just have to keep reading because you get so invested in them! K.L. Kolarich does such a wonderful job at really creating such complicated characters that they feel real!

If you enjoyed the first 2 books, you'll love this one!

This book took me so much longer to get through than the first two. The pacing was much slower and the same conflicts took up the first 70% of the book which felt repetitive. It finally picks up at the end which redeems it and makes me want to read book 4.

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

This is such an outstanding series! Each book gets better and better. I thought that we were already at god-tier level awesome so book four will probably be multiverse level awesome. I can't wait!

K.L. Kolarich is a world-building mob boss! She is a queen in her craft and it is so evident when reading her books. The world-building is massive in this world. I can't even imagine all the time that went into the making of this fantasy world. The plot is riveting and executed beautifully. The premise is creative and original. I love all the lore and different cultures. This book answered so many of our questions but just raised more for us to ponder.

These characters are so complex and they jump right off the page. I am so amazed by how much intricate detail has gone into each character. All of the characters are distinct and vibrant. The main characters are relatable and easy to connect with. I love all of the interactions between characters. There is some excellent character growth in this book.

The slow-burn romance in this series is so worth it because every time Zaethan and Luscia interact my heart likes to pitter-patter. I just love them together.

Overall, this is a book series that you are not going to want to pass up. House of Boreal, as well as the rest of the series, has memorable characters that you will passionately root for, an intricately woven plot that will keep you on your toes, and breathtaking world-building that stands out and makes you take notice. Basically, the best of everything. Get ready for your new favorite fandom!

Okay, so I want to start off by saying that K.L. Kolarich’s writing style is both highly addicting and absolutely phenomenal - every book in this series has been amazing, but they just keep getting better and better!

I made the mistake of starting this book right before bed. Seven hours and a night of no sleep later, and I’ve finished it. This book was literally so freaking good that I couldn’t put it down, and it was most definitely worth sacrificing a night of sleep for.

Since “House of Boreal” is the third book in a very complex fantasy series, I don’t want to give too much away. What I can say is that this book had so much angst that there were a couple of times I got literally teary because of the emotions that this book made me feel.

So much happened in this book; there were so many shocking plot twists and action scenes that had me completely and utterly invested. I also loved that the reader got to learn more info about Boreal than we’ve ever had before, and as always, the politics played a huge role as well.

Finally, I felt like the character development of certain characters was very well-done, those characters being Luscia, the haidren to Boreal, Zaethan, the haidren to Darakai, and Dmitri, the king they both serve. And that ending! It kind of made me want to scream into the abyss. I don’t know how I’m going to wait to see what happens next!

So far, this was my least favorite book in the series. It was still good, but I felt like it really had a slow start. I probably didn’t get too excited until 2/3rds of the way in. That being said, I’m still looking forward to the next book in the series.

Book three and we are thrust back into this incredible world of mystery and intrigue as we once again jump on this intense and emotional rollercoaster ride. The author intricately weaves their magic and draws us close as we continue on these complex characters adventures. Captivating and enthralling, the world building is descriptive and beautiful, the storyline exciting and gripping as we get answers to our questions and then have more questions arise! It’s a fascinating addition to this incredible series and I am so ready for the next book.

House of Boreal is the third book in the Haidren Legacy series. As with the first two books, Kolarich does an amazing job of world building Boreal and developing the characters even further so you really understand where they are coming from. This book is so complex and rich and so well developed you can almost feel you are there in the middle of the story with the characters in that world.

This epic novel is a good size for sure, as are the first two. However, I will say, in the first 70% of the book there isn’t a lot that happens. I realize the author is setting up the storyline for what is to come, but it almost seemed like it was too much. If it has been edited down a bit, I believe the story still could have flowed, and not been as lengthy. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, because I am heavily invested in these characters now, but it took a while to get to the end where all the action happens. I also would have liked to see more happening with the coup in Bastiion, but I’m hoping that will be revealed in the next book.

And can I just say how much I loved reading Alora and the Figure’s story and finally finding out who he is and how he became who he is? Great storyline!

I’m totally looking forward to book four. I cannot wait to see how this story plays out. Highly recommend for any high fantasy fans.

I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Aaaaand K. L. Kolarich strikes again! Seriously, such a good series and such a good book! The world building is extremely interesting as always, and I love how we’re in a different location per book so we can explore the individual cultures and worlds. The characters were very fleshed out, as always, and I loved the realistic human conflict that happened throughout the book. While sometimes the plot felt like it was dragging a little bit, literally everything else made up for it. Compared to the previous two books, this was definitely more character focused, but it was extremely well done in a way that didn’t make me bored at all.

I am going to be honest, some of the book did feel a little Christian-y 'preachy' because "oooo~ all the gods aren't proven to be real, but the religion where there is one god is the one that " It felt kind of blatant and annoyingly obvious... but maybe that's just me. I liked the portrayal of faith vs. zealotry and the struggle to pick between faith and what you want, but... I don't know, it felt a bit preachy. But regardless of the intent, I was able to ignore it for the good writing.

4.75 stars.

Just like the first two books, this one was also intense, intimidating and full of suspense. With every book in this series, a layer of mystery is peeled off, and we get some answers to the previous questions while new questions arise in the process, and now it’s all about getting book 4.

K.L Kolarich writes stories with lots of information to absorb and explore and this one is the same with a vast world-building. The books are thick with every chapter having its purpose and something new to offer. Sometimes it felt a little slow and lengthy but with the story going so strong it all fell into place.

I want more of these characters and their bond and I am excited to see where it goes all in the next book. There is no easy path to take and I think it may get a little more complicated, I am looking forward to all the politics going on. Every place has new challenges for my favourites.

This is the third installment in The Haidren Legacy series, which had me engrossed from start to finish. As I dived into this book, I was caught in a web of political intrigue and personal struggles of the protagonists Luscia and Zaethan. Returning to her homeland, Luscia faces the challenge of persuading the Elder Enclave to support Dmitri's cause, leading to a profound exploration of faith and trust. Zaethan, marked as a refugee, battles against hostility and prejudice as he strives to prove himself to his people. While the pacing was slower than the previous books, the character development, intricate relationships, and slow-burn romance between Luscia and Zaethan were thoroughly satisfying. The world-building was exceptional, and the Figure's mysterious past added an extra layer of intrigue. In all, it was a captivating and emotionally resonant read that left me eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this epic fantasy series.

This one took me so long to read. I had trouble getting into because it doesn't reintroduce characters and I couldn't remember enough about the previous two books. The author's note at the end discusses how much trouble she had in writing this book and the internal struggles in keeping her faith and convictions while also writing about the evils that can abound in theocracies. I enjoyed the portions that explained the faith and I understood the characters that were clearly wolves in sheep's clothing. The injured hip was a nice touch too. Overall, though, it was a little boring. There was a lot of world building and not much action. The slow burn is super slow - like glowing embers slow. Some people like that! I'm not one of them. The last 15% of the book was better and I am still looking forward to book 4, House of Pilar.

Extremely hard to get into if your memories of the first 2 books aren't fresh despite brilliant writing. It was torture. But once I got used to the made up words littering every page and started remembering things from the previous books it became a breeze. Much better than book 2 in my opinion, once you get past the beginning.
These books are unusually slow, they remind me more of fantasy written 20-30 years ago. If you can't stand info dumping, be warned and turn back now.

I was getting a bit tired of Zathan's attitude and brashness, hopefully he finally matured for good.

The author unleashes insane amounts of angst between Zaethan and Luscia on us without any proper reward. Throw us a bone already!! I can't wait another eternity for the next one *sobs*

It may take me a day, a week, a month, a year to get over the sheer brilliance of this story. I’ve loved every story in The Haidren Legacy but the beautiful atmosphere of Boreal dragged me in and kept me captivated and mesmerized.

K.L paints a picture with her words that brings you into the heart of her stories. This world is expansive and is full of amazing characters, mysteries, politics, and the slowest slow burn romance that I am dying to see come to fruition.

The author has not only written a multi-faceted story, but built an elaborate world with its own language, it’s own comprehensive glossary, and it’s own bestiary. I urge you to start the journey now!

I know I can’t say this yet because I’ve only finished one book this year, but if House of Boreal isn’t in my top 5 reads of 2024 then I’ll be shocked. This book surpassed every expectation I had by miles. Kolarich mentioned that she spent longer than she had anticipated on this book trying to get it exactly right and you can tell. This book was such an emotionally vulnerable story to read and Kolarich wrote with incredible humility and grace to portray the brutal honesty of trauma and prejudice.

House of Bastiion was an excellent debut and House of Darakai was more intricate and complex. House of Boreal was on a completely different playing field. Our characters from the previous two books became living, breathing entities that existed off page just as much as they did in the novel. Continually changing the setting of each book is such a brilliant move because it allows the readers to examine each character under a different lens. Boreal is the home of warriors, devout religious leaders, secrets and awe. It showed the zealotry, fanaticism, and possessive desire to control things and why Boreal is considered a holy land. Seeing our Quadren navigate those nuances was spectacular. I can’t even begin to convey the love in my heart for Luscia, Zaethan, Dmitri, Ira (begrudging though that love for him is), and Hachiro except to tell everyone how I clutched this book to my chest over and over again while reading.

I loved Luscia more than ever in this book. She was a young and powerful woman who was determinedly marching the road to her destiny despite the challenges and trials, trauma and horrors that she’d faced. Her journey to self really shone in this book, rightfully so as she was back in the land of her people and faith. Boreal was not the place Luscia had remembered it being and I loved this idea of seeing what was once familiar as suddenly foreign when viewed through the perspective of outsiders. Luscia is the Quadren’s gateway into Boreal and thus the gateway to their success in regaining Dmitri’s throne. Watching Luscia buckle under the pressure of the Boreali was such a vivid image of what it looks like to carry a burden alone.

Zaethan. Where to begin??? His character continually grows and deepens with each book and I’m in awe of Kolarich for writing such a complicated man. I adored his journey in this book: watching him grapple with his identity, worth, and place were so emotional. I could feel his despair and anguish throughout this novel’s entirety. Friendship has always been one of the most important aspects of reading for me, so getting to witness the protectiveness between Dmitri and Zaethan made my heart sing. My heart swelled when I read the words: “’Brother, you have my heart.’” because that is exactly what friendship is: giving pieces of yourself away to gain something much greater in return. Zaethan has always been a prideful character, but I loved getting to see the moments of true humility and softness in him.

If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a hundred times more: I love Dmitri Thoarne and the entirety of Orynthia doesn’t deserve him. We saw a new side of Dmitri in this book other than the gracious, gently, and soft-spoken king we’ve primarily encountered in the past. This book had a sense of urgency that the other books didn’t because Dmitri is dying faster than anyone anticipated. This urgency also showed Dmitri’s flaws as a character, which only broadened him more. For a young and frail king, Dmitri is one of the most earnest characters I’ve come across. His fervency was as palpable as it was refreshing. From an outsiders perspective I can see why the people of Boreal struggle to accept him because his earnestness fits like an ill fitting cloak. So often, earnestness is looked down on as naivety and an inability to accept/face reality. It’s seen as an “overly optimistic” approach that is scorned. It’s an easily misunderstood trait, even more so in those who are young. But Dmitri is unapologetically earnest in everything he does and it fills this book with a hope that wouldn’t exist without him. He is the Quadren’s hope, both literally and figuratively. One of my favourite moments is when Dmitri displays this sincerity whole-heartedly:

“’Don’t you know, every seedling sprouts from darkness.’ He removed his elegant fingers without a touch to her skin and tucked then under his chin. ‘Planting is an act of greatness. The rain comes in its season. The sun, on its course. Sometimes…sometimes we don’t get to see what we grow, Luscia.’ His irises glistened, taking on a shade of soil more than the verdant splendour he so often cultivated in his gardens. ‘Sometimes our time is cut short in the field. So we must plant greatness wherever there is room, because one day, it may feed thousands.’”

Other points I want to briefly touch on in this review:

- I do not have the words to express how deeply I adored the religious overtones of this book. Seeing the Boreali practicing and living out their faith was something that is so rarely portrayed well in fantasy (that isn’t under “Christian fiction” at least). Kolarich really toyed with the idea of zealotry vs faith and I think it was a brilliant addition to this book.
- PHALEN!!! We finally get to meet Luscia’s little brother in this book and oh my gosh he was perfection. I loved every moment with him.
- THE PLOT?!?! I felt like I was desperately trying to catch my breath this entire book because from the moment it opens to the closing line the journey never ceases. There were so many “lightbulb” moments where I finally was able to connect the dots to previous plot points or easter eggs! It was so rewarding.
- Even though I didn’t feel excited over reading the Figure’s POV chapters, I did love them. They were the perfect segue back to what was happening in Bastiion while still tying in the Boreali elements. I was sooooo glad that we finally got his reveal at the end too!

I am legitimately obsessed with this book (and this whole series) and I found myself thinking about it when I was clearly supposed to be doing other things (like working lol). I waited almost 2 years for this book and my gosh it was worth every single day. 10/5 stars, just because I can.

Ethereally devastating, this book had my heart breaking out of my chest all the while squealing for joy. Over seven hundred pages and I’m still begging for more. I cannot wait for book four!

Luscia and Zaethan’s internal and external conflicts continue to have me up late reading “just one more chapter”, fist pumping the air with elated exclamations of “YESSSS!” Only to slam the story shut with a groan of frustration, before defiantly flipping it back open to seek out their next Kwihila.

The Figure is slowly being unriddled through glimpses into his past which shed a foreboding light on the current events of Orynthia.

Buckle up, this read is brutally intense in the most delightfully ruinous way.

I really enjoy this series. I love how the main characters grow, but also how they regress to worse versions of themselves when faced with traumatic situations or oppressive family members. I like that some characters are here for comic relief and I truly appreciate it because the story sometimes gets really dark.

I see that some situations serve the purpose of truly showing you who a character is - which is why I believe that neither Alora nor her creature deserve any redemption. Alora has manipulated and lied to her niece because she fears her own past transgressions, even though the past cannot be changed. She sees herself in her niece and therefore fears her niece will make the same mistakes... but to be honest the only mistake Alora made was NOT giving in to her feelings in the first place, so...
...and the creature (who shall not be named and remain spoiler-free) is still equally obsessed over Alora, proving he learned nothing. His character is devalued further in a scene when he is walking through a city and a) ignores and feels nothing toward a woman being raped b) feels sorry for an old man being stripped naked and robbed but does not interfere c) almost does not protect a child from a pedophile because he should not interfere - because Alora told him so. TBH at this point, creatures like him are spreading all over the realm so there's no need for secrecy anymore, is there? Although, unfortunately, there are still hints of possible redemption for the creature sparkled throughout the book.

I do not like the "one (true) god" situation happening tho. Too much religion spoils the story a bit.

I also don't like how Luscia freely takes from Zaethan but gives almost nothing in return, while he has truly been supportive and loyal to her (in his twisted way). I hope this relationship will soon even out because right now, he is being the better person. Which was a development I haven't seen coming given the person he was in the first book in the series. I also find it slightly amusing how the majority of their relationship happens within their heads. This is why we have two so different perspectives on what their relationship is - Zaethan's and Luscia's. Which just means that they should TALK more, and sulk less. I also like that he is much weaker, physically, than she is because she is a Boreali. Which is not a common trope in fantasy.

And now for the PREDICTIONS for the sequel:
1) Zaethan is Dmitri's half-brother. Dmitri will die, because Luscia's brother's blood is not as potent as hers. Zaethan will be the reluctant king from the prophecy. Then we'll have the issue of Luscia being the haidren and not being able to be with the king - luckily her brother will step in as the haidren in her place. I think the comment from Ira's father about "keeping his and Cyra's secret" was meant to mislead us into thinking that he was the father. The author keeps circling back to the green color of Zaethan's eyes and the "green-brown" in Dmitri's eyes. There is also the offhand comment the creature makes about Zaethan and Dmitri's love being the proof of their ignorance - why? Because they are half-brothers or because Zaethan is the son of a man who has some kind of claim to the throne? Interesting.

2) The story of Luscia's mother's disappearance does not make any sense. Was she kidnapped by the Obscurer? Something's fishy.

I can't wait for the sequel. We have a little "Frodo going to Mordor" situation with Zaethan being Sam, Luscia Frodo, and the creature being gollum. There is even a ring.

The book as the previous ones has lots of characters and each one is more complex, and more interesting and they drive the story forward in their way. I loved the new twist in events when comes to some characters, and also some secrets that were revealed made me go "I FUCKING KNEW IT", but even tho I had that hunch, it was so good to read what I knew it may be the truth. Once again Luscia has my heart ♥.

The world-building with each book takes your breath away. That's the way I can put it. It is rich, beautiful, colorful and so full of stuff out of this world. And when you read this book my honest opinion is you cannot rush it. You legit have to read it slowly to get in all those details because the way things are being created they paint this world in front of your eyes in which you live alongside the characters. You're not just reading, you're living the book.

⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜
Even tho is a big chunky book and usually they intimidate me, I can't complain. I loved it. I finished it slowly and I am ready for the next one. This one brought me to my knees and I've still not recovered. The Luscia scene with Zaethan - you could hear that heart crack. I was so close to sobbing my eyes out because that was a moment so much waited!! Also the "creature" in the night, I felt sorry about him. I had that feeling of knowing his story (kind of), but when things were revealed it was so bittersweet. The story is full of things that have a double meaning which I can't explain without being spoilery so go and read this one because the world will just blow you away. And the way the author twists the words and offers the scenes double meaning, double interpretation is just magic.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
The story is clean romance, there was barely any romance in the story more like angsromance which is way better if you understand what I say lol. The story however, can have dark subjects, some darker descriptions but in general I didn't got triggered by the story and you can check the TW's on the author's website.

We enter the Boreal through the Najjan training grounds. Luscia advocates for her king with the Master and it is interesting to me that after all the disgusting prejudices against the Boreali, those accompanying Luscia that are not natives are appalled at their treatment. It seems to me that it is similar to how Luscia has been treated the entire time-it is always funny how people think discrimination is OK when it is not about them. We move forward and many things are happening all at once. The Quadren has many trials during this book and just like any other group of people, the Boreali have some who are accepting and those who are not. I was very happy to get to know Phalen a bit better and to know in my heart that Alora is not different than what has been revealed so far. The Quadren grows closer and more at ease with each other but we definitely see Luscia conflicted with her love for Boreal and the traumas she had to endure with her prior assault and her mother’s disappearance. Mysteries you were not expecting are revealed and others shrouded with more questions. This book is packed with enough slivers of knowledge to make you want more and wet that curiosity but leaves so much more open for more questions that have yet to be answered. I know in my heart this is all leading up to something brilliant-I just hope that some of what I have floating in my head come to fruition. Only the author knows for sure but I am on edge waiting for that fourth book and hoping it takes less time than the others!! The world building and character development along with the languages are unmatched for any books I have read so far and I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a deep dive. The only thing I would change is how quickly I get the next installment! Lothadim’Aniell!

How did I not notice House of Boreal was the third in a series? Why have I not read the other two books yet?

KL Kolarich is an epic worldbuilder with an incredibly vivd and colourful narrative that the reader becomes immersed immediately. I feel that perhaps I could benefit from have erad the other two books first, but due to the detailed nature of the chapters, felt myself catching up throughout. I realy enjoy the writing style although I think it is a little heavy going, mainly because I did not read the other two books first. No shade on the author at all, because the flow is awesome, I am just a bit behind the game on this one

Luscia's journey and development is relatable and the slow-burn had me screaming at her and Zaethan just to get their flipping act together.

The House of Boreal is an immersive fantasy that is more focussed on the storyline than the relationship and I do feel that I have caught it half-way purely due to the strength of the writing flow and so I will certainly need to read the other two books so I can re-read this one and defo before i can move on to book four. Yes, it can be read as an awesome standalone, but for my preference, better for me to read as part of a series

The Haidren Legacy series continues to astound, and "House of Boreal" is no exception, delivering a relentless barrage of masterful world-building, vivid imagery, and emotionally-charged storylines that will leave readers breathless. Brace yourself, for this saga is not for the faint of heart.

In the midst of an already exceptional series, "House of Boreal" stands out as a true gem. From the first page, I was utterly captivated, drawn into a world of intricately crafted settings and deeply nuanced characters. The investment in world-building and character development pays off handsomely, enriching the narrative with layers of complexity and depth.

With each revelation, the plot thickens, propelling the story forward with a relentless momentum. Secrets are laid bare, alliances are forged and shattered, and amidst the chaos, love and loss intertwine in a delicate dance. It's a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions that leaves you craving more with each turn of the page.

As I devoured "House of Boreal," I found myself eagerly anticipating the next installment, hungry for more of the gripping saga that has ensnared my imagination. For those who revel in tales of intrigue, betrayal, and redemption, this series is an absolute must-read. Bring on the next chapter—I'm ready for the ride!.

Absolutely amazing!!!!! Although I loved HOD and up until now it was my favorite book in the series but I will have to say House of Boreal takes the cake. There was a lot of challenges these beloved characters faced but there was also a lot of growth that I appreciated. You slowly started to see each and every character come into their own person. Luscia and Zaethan are two of the many that I felt really shined in this book. They are definitely not the same person they were where we left off at the end of HOD. The personal growth was there, the vivid imagery of Boreal and their culture was there, the political intrigue was there, and of course the romance!!! Don’t even get me started on the romance. This is one of the slowest of slow burns I ever read but I’m here for it 🙌🏼 Even though this book lacked the same amount of spice that was present in HOD, it was still present just on a different scale. The tension between Zaethan and Luscia was expected but I didn’t think it was going to have a hold on me the way it did. You could just feel the sizzling energy coming off the pages between the two. It was utter perfection 👌🏽 Thank you Kait for sending me a copy as I had so much fun reading this work of art. I don’t know what I’m going to do while I wait for HOP but I can’t wait.

4.5/5⭐️

My god, I was so excited to receive this arc and finally reenter this world. Although, I did have to reread the first two since it’s so rich of a world, I kind of forgotten the smaller details in the time between. And it’s the small details you want to pay attention to.
I walked into this book with so many questions. I’m happy we got an answer to a few, but there’s still more I’m dying to know. I have my theories but I need to know. This book picks up right where we left off and does not relent. Although, the reason I am giving this book 4.5 instead of 5 stars is because I think there are a couple scenes that could’ve maybe been condensed? Like every chapter gave us something new and important, yet a few felt like we were dragging our feet a little. Although, maybe we were supposed to feel that to relate to how Dmitri and Zaethan feel?
I still adore Dmitri and not so secretly ship him and luscia. They’re just so precious in every one of their interactions while challenging and supporting one another. But Ira and Hachiro had me literally laughing out loud so often. I love this series. I think about it often. And I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.
Thank you to the author for providing an advance reader copy of this book for my honest review.

I started HoB with so many questions after HoD and was left satisfied with unexpected answers that have me impatient for the 4th book. We get to learn more about the figure, Alora, the Lumin, and more, while being set up for some big things to come.

HoB focuses heavily on internal conflict and growth for Luscia and Zaethan. It was interesting to see how each of them reacted differently to the circumstances they've found themselves in, their discoveries that their own people and loved ones are not quite what they expected, and to see how they continue to push each other to grow.

Boreal with its different customs and lore made a fascinating setting for the book. The Quadren has to deal with Boreal's own political agenda, which adds a lot of tension, but also causes the pacing to feel slower throughout the book. However, a lot of mysteries are revealed, while setting up for exciting things to come. Even with the slower feel, I didn't lose interest at all. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kolarich clearly put a lot of thought into everything she did with her plot and characters.

What a ending! I didn't expect it to go in the direction it did. The wait for book 4 is going to be agonizing, but so worth it.

I received and ARC in exchange for my honest review.

In this book we visit Boreal and learn all the secrets and astonishing aspects the province has to offer. We also watch all the prejudice the people have to offer as well. The other haidrens are not welcomed with open arms at all.
We watch as Luscia battles who she is now with who she was when she left home. She really grows into herself in this story.
In turn we also see Zaethan come to grips with everything he realized in House of Darakai. He learns where he currently stands in this new world and where he wants to stand in the future.
Zaethan and Luscia’s slow burn sadly continues to burn slowly!! I wish there had been more in this book for them! I’m hoping for more in the next installment to the series.
The cliffhanger on this literally left me jaw dropped because I didn’t even realize I was finishing the book! That was dirty K.L… DIRTY!!! You give us everything we’ve been asking about the figure and Alora just to stop the book like that!?!?
Overall I’m stuck between a 3.75 and a 4 rating for this one.
