Minimax is the hilarious, often farcical, story of lesbian/feminist Minnie, her trials and romantic tribulations in London, Australia, and San Francisco. It features a boisterous array of supporting characters include Renée Vivien and Natalie Clifford Barney who are revealed as vampires. Those who became staunch Anna Livia fans after reading Relatively Norma will greet Minnie like an old friend; others will delight in making her acquaintance here.
Anna Livia was a lesbian feminist writer and linguistic theorist. Born in Ireland, she grew up in London, England and Swaziland. As a professor, she taught at the University of Illinois and the University of California, Berkeley.
I mean I laughed, I really did, but the majority of this book was entirely incomprehensible. The setting alternates between reality and the imagination of the main character, and then people from these imaginations start showing up in reality, and also there’s vampires who own yachts. My favourite character was without a doubt the parrot, who spent its time being offended with everyone and trying to seduce an inflatable pool-snake, and subsequently fell in love with a plastic bag. I have to say I was relieved when this ended.
