When Ekaterina Kalashnikova witnessed two men being murdered, she never could’ve imagined the culprit would become her worst nightmare.
Ekaterina lived her life, filled with men that thrived in the dark, yet none of them struck her quite like Davorin.
After all, when they first met, it resulted in an inevitable clash of their worlds. So magnetic, intense and compelling.
And before she knew it, her life was filled with only him. A masked man with serpentine eyes, secrets, and an obsession.
With coincidences continuing to pile on top of one another, his obsession fuels her ardor, and she soon begins to realize that she wants him maybe more than she should.
After all, a coincidence took a whole lot of planning.
“Oh God,” I rasped. Davorin chuckled. “No, little lion.” He brought his lips an inch above mine. “You are my god, and I was born to worship the ground you walked on.”
Have you ever wanted to read a book about two delicious villains who STAY villains throughout the entire story? If yes, this is the book you've been looking for.
So many times in books I've wanted characters to do exactly what they say they will, and this book delivers. Especially with Ekaterina, she was cold and unfeeling at the start, and even though Davorin made her feel for the first time in her life, she didn't let that distract her from what she set out to do. Now THAT'S commitment.
She's also a very strong main character, who doesn't need anyone to protect her, MY GIRL CAN PROTECT HERSELF!!!
Davorin captured my attention from the moment I saw his name in the blurb, like my fate was sealed. I love a good old Slavic name, just give a character one and I will read anything and everything with them in it.
He was a walking red flag, but a hot one so we will be ignoring all of the flags, thank you!! He's so devoted to Ekaterina and we love to see it. I loved the softer moments between them as much as the more chaotic ones, because these two are nothing if not chaotic.
They're both twisted in their own way, the same yet different, but they truly were made for each other and that twist at the end just proves it.
I had a thought bubble going in that direction, but the twist was still unexpected and I was going "nooo, no way". So you can bet I'll be going back to reread this to find the clues.
As the ending was getting closer, I was so scared of how it would all go down, and of course it was a cliffhanger...but a very good one, like the hair pulling kind. WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE US LIKE THAT KAT KING?!?
But it also makes me happy knowing their story isn't concluded and will continue in at least one more book. I was wondering if it would be a series-series or a series of standalones and I got my answer.
I will also be getting a physical copy of this book because it really was THAT GOOD and I'd love to have it on my shelf.
If you like mafia / dark romance books where the mcs are more than a wee bit insane (in general and also for each other) then you should pick this up. The story is also very well written, the steam is good, the side characters are interesting too, not just the mains...what's stopping you? Exactly, nothing, so go read it and thank me later.
*Huge thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
This one was such a twisted and psychotic read. I liked the characters and loved how they weren't cliché at all. Ekaterina was a badass FMC and Dovarin was hot af. The plot was something that kept me on the edge of my seat and the twist at the end was jaw-dropping. I didn't expect that at all. Kudos to the author for doing a great job with peeling the layers slowly.
Still shaken about the ending. I'm so conflicted!
Please read the trigger warnings before picking up this book.
Special thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Wow, just wow! I have no words to describe the way I felt reading this story. NO WORDS! 😱 I was immersed in the world of this book, the politics, the building, the characters. Each had their own personality. Davorin and Kaya were amazing, I loved the push and pull between them, and the twist, Goddamn, did not see that one coming! It took me completely off guard, I was staring at my screen for a full blown minute asking myself “what the FUCK did I just read!!!!”
And that ending, I don’t know what to feel.
Davorin was a character capable of keeping you biting your teeth and waiting for what he would do next, and Kaya was a very complex character that I still want to unearth and understand, because she is, damn! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
I love Dominik and I want to know moreee about him because he had this cool aura that just had me so interested!
Overall, this was a quick and easy read, and I can’t wait for it to come out!
Thanks to the amazing author for this wonderful arc!
ATE. I ATE THIS UP!! this book was eaten alive by me. or was i eaten alive by this book? either way, it served!! and i literally have proof because it took me less an 48 hours to read this, and i fell in love with the writing, the pacing, and i can't forget the characters!!
𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
ekaterina kalashnikova. OU THIS GIRL. MY QUEEN. my sweet kaya. i love her so much. granted, she might be a bit crazy in the head, i'll still defend her because miss girl was absolutely serving. SHE WAS SUCH A GOOD FMC. she was such a smart badass?? like can i be you?? or at least be with you?? i adored the way she was so determined towards the challenges she was faced with. her intelligence was crazy high and she always acted one step ahead!
davorin was a bit of a cliche stalker mmc but that didn't take too much away from his character. i actually really liked his character!! AND HIS OBSESSION WITH HER? WHAT ELSE COULD I ASK FOR? his obsession with kaya was literally so hot. but like, as he should be.
𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴:
on a real note of appreciation towards this story, i loved it. the story overall was twisted and spicy and dark! i loved the plot twists and i especially loved that ending!! BECAUSE WHO WOULDN'T LOVE A CLIFFHANGER? i sure did and i will in fact be counting down the days till the second book!
there were a few moments where the past tense writing got a bit mushy for me, but i loved the descriptions this book offered! i loved the way kaya's character was written because i could picture the type of person she was as if i'd actually met her!
a note in appreciation of the side characters shown throughout this book because i loved them too!! they helped build the foundation and plot of this story and i could not have asked for more...
overall, i enjoyed this book! i absolutely devoured it. please be sure to check trigger warnings before proceeding to read this book.
Ekatarina (Kaya) grew up in the Russian mafia with her father. She is a fearless, tough mafia FMC, which her past experiences have made her be like this. I love a strong FMC!
Davorin is a hot, sexy, and crazy MMC! I love how he was introduced right away. I do wish we had more of his POV.
I enjoyed how this book kept me on my toes. There more many twists and turns that kept me intrigued! Can we talk about that cliffhanger?!
Please your trigger warnings before diving in!
Thank you Kat King and Next Step PR for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I devoured this book! I love a psychotic FMC and Ekaterina is just that. Davorin is another stalker daddy I love a good stalker. This mafia dark romance was so good and I loved that the FMC was no damsel she can definitely take care of herself. I can’t wait for the next book that cliffhanger was a doozy.
This is book one in the series and check the trigger warnings as this book is a dark romance 🖤
Deviant Virtue is a book that I've been eagerly anticipating for quite some time, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The snippets I came across on Instagram only heightened my excitement, and I can confidently say that this book exceeded all my expectations.
The story revolves around Ekaterina Kalashnikova, a formidable female protagonist I'd love to befriend in real life—although, I have no doubt she could end me with ease if I crossed her path—She is armed with quick-witted comebacks, a mastery of the art of assassination, and a firm grip on her emotions. Her journey begins in a gruesome setting, where she confronts a dangerous man known as, Davorin, setting them both on a treacherous path filled with obsession and a touch of madness.
The narrative is a rollercoaster of twists and turns, and the cliffhanger at the end left me utterly speechless. I found myself thinking, "How could it end like this?" Part two cannot come soon enough because that last line left me craving more. I'm completely in the dark about where the story will go from here, and I can't wait to find out!
Before diving into this gripping read, I strongly recommend checking the trigger warnings as the story takes unexpected and intense turns. Deviant Virtue is a thrilling ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Brace yourself for the unexpected twists, and enjoy the journey! ✨
Recommended for readers who enjoy heart-pounding thrillers, dark romance, strong female leads, and stories that defy expectations. This book is an absolute must-read!
*P. S: Dominik (her brother) has my heart in a chokehold fr fr
First of all, I thank THENEXTSTEP pr and Kat King for the ARC.
This is my sincere opinion for this book.
⭐️: 4/5. 🌶: 4'5/5.
I want to tell everyone that I found my new crush and his name is Davorin. I know he is the RED FLAG (🚩) but I don't care. I just love him.
I enjoy a lot this story. It was well-paced and it had me intrigued all the time. Also, want to say that the chemistry between the lead is just 💋💋. They made me love their scenes. Their connection is something else. I just love it.
Something I dislike? Kaya's attitude. There's few scenes that I couldn't but dislike her. But at same time, I pity her and what happened to her.
That's it. Everyone must read this. 😌
Is there any chance that we could have Xenia and Rhea's book? They intrigued me and I want to know more about them. 🫢
This was a hard one for me. I was sent an ARC in exchange for an honest review after being intrigued by the blurb on this book. A damaged, diagnosed psycho who stalks a mafia princess after a chance meeting? Yes please. But. It fell short. Ekaterina (Kaya) is a cold, selfish character that stomps on everyone in her life and is very one dimensional. Her POV is angry and demeaning and constantly prattling about murdering people or punching them in the face for things like smiling at her. There’s not a single place in this book that made me connect to her, even a little and the further in I got the more I loathed continuing. She and her cringeworthy personality are what lost this book its remaining stars. Davorin is an interesting character, he intrigued me when he came on page, and even more when Kaya started digging into him. He’s a creepy, literal stalker but there are flashes of something underneath here and there in the story. It would’ve been nice to be in his POV longer and to get to learn something more about him as a whole. There was a lot of fluff written into this very long book. Some of this could have been pulled out in favor of further development of the characters. They’re very one dimensional, even together and it lost that spark for me because of it. There is also quite a bit of missed editing in this book. I may be the minority, but misused and misspelled words trip me up while I read. Misused especially. In one spot there’s actually the entire end of a sentence missing. This book needs a good, thorough sweep through for corrections. Overall the idea of the story is solid and something different. The thought is there and the writing is good, though repetitive, the characters just bog it down. Especially Kaya. There were some normal predictable moments and page turns, but there were some interesting twists as well that I didn’t see coming, which I always appreciate. I might be interested in reading a different series from King, I wouldn’t go back to these characters.
Check your triggers before reading. There’s stalking, murder, gore, swearing, child abuse, violence, and rough sex.
Ekaterina Kalashnikova is a mafia princess with a bone to pick with her father while also trying to get out of the family. She is cold, doesn't care about others and she likes to use people to her advantage. She also has a dark past and she was made into what she is because of it. Ekaterina is a weapon and a strong one at that. Davorin is a hitman who was hired to kill someone in the family but when he meets Ekaterina everything changes... or so i thought 🙃 I loved everything about Davorin and i was interested in learning more how his mind worked but unfortunately this is a duet so there's not many Davorin povs. What we do know is that he is a hitman, a psychopath and a stalker who has an obsession with Kaya. With two characters like this, what could go wrong right?
Kaya aka Ekaterina, and Davorin end up playing a cat and mouse game and only one of them will come out of it alive. That's what i thought when i finished this book. I do know their story has an hea but i just can't see it happening and I'm more than excited to read the next one and discover how in the hell are they getting together because by now there's broken trust, deceit and a broken heart in the middle of all of this not to mention innocent people that are getting caught in the Kaya/Davorin storm.
This was a very compelling and intriguing story and i was riveted by the main characters and how they worked. I'm impressed and i can't wait for the next one!
There’s not enough stars for this one. Once I started reading, I could not put it down! The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat with plot twists I never saw coming. It’s dark and steamy.
Assuming Ekaterina is your average mafia princess would be a mistake. She’s tough and cares about very little other than Davorin.
Davorin is a dangerous hitman/stalker obsessed with Ekaterina. His goal is to tame her. But he may have gotten more than he bargained for with this princess. “After all, a coincidence took a whole lot of planning”
Be sure to check for trigger earrings. This one is dark.
I was definitely not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I completely DEVOURED this book is less than 24 hours.
Deviant Virture introduces us to Ekaterina Kalashnikova, a woman that lives up to her name. A complete bada**.
Most of this book is seen through Kaya’s POV and although I love it, you later realize that it’s not the most reliable. Even us as readers are left dumbfounded by the discoveries towards the end of the book. I really enjoyed her character and think that she’d be an amazing friend to have in real life, most definitely loyal to a T.
We also meet Davorin (God of War) who isn’t exactly what one was expecting and definitely had many hidden secrets. I completely swooned over Davorin and the more I read, the more I became obsessed.
I think these two are definitely a match made in heaven (or hell). I’d say they compliment each other well and are just as deranged as the other.
The execution of this book was amazing and a lot of the things that ended up happening and we ended up discovering had me literally flabbergasted. I mean, talk about how the tables turn. The ending had me HOOKED and I literally yelled because of where we left. Definitely a cat and mouse game between the two and I can’t wait to see where this ends. I really hope the second book brings lots of dramatics between the two because I can definitely see it going down.
I highly suggest reading TWs before reading given that a lot of graphic situations occur, but compared to darker or heavier topics that occur in dark romances, it’s fairly tame.
It took me a while to write this review because I have mixed feelings. While I did enjoy this story, I have to say I was quite conflicted with the Ekaterina. I adored her fierce nature, sass and strength. Her heartbreaking backstory does explain her characteristics but there was something about her that was a bit off (can't quite put my finger on it). I got a bit of whiplash because despite it always being in her POV, it was hard for me to follow her thoughts. Davorin was quite entertaining in a scary stalker kind of way. We don't get his POV often which made him a mystery. It was sometimes infuriating, sometimes compelling. I didn't get very many answers to my questions about him though so here hoping for the next book. It was a bit hard for me to connect and root for both of the characters because I felt like they lacked in building an emotional connection/ depth (in my opinion). The spice was definitely there though :p
The plot was quite compelling though. I was on the edge of my seat trying to navigate through the twists and turns from start to finish. That ending was insane (in a crazy amazing way) and I'm very excited to see what happens next! I'm honoured to have received an advanced reader copy and am leaving this honest review voluntarily <3
Deviant Virtue (The Mastermind book 1) by Kat King. Ekaterina has been raised in the Russian Mafia. Growing up, her father was the Pakhan. Now, her older Aleksei is the Pakhan. So she is used to the underbelly of the world. She is enjoying her freedom in New York for now. When out at a club, she runs into Davorin, a contract killer. This story starts out simple enough. After running into Davorin, their paths continue to cross. The two have an attraction that can't be explained. This story was one of cat and mouse, however the real mind game is that you don't know who is a threat, who is on whose side and where this will end up, once everything is said and done. I am still trying to decide how I feel about this story. I do know I am looking forward to the next book. I need all my questions answered. It's a true mind game that has me all over the place. All I do know is Ekaterina has gone through some things that have left her as the cold , detached, and crazy person that she is , but is very into Davorin. Davorin is a contract killer who has a thing for Ekaterina and goes to bizarre lengths to make her his. He has an agenda, and I'm just not sure what that agenda might be. I do like both Ekaterina and Davorin and their sick relationship. 4 stars, I guess. I think I'm struggling because I don't know where this story is going. Enjoy!
A intricate and obsessive psychological romance from Kat King that had me gripped right from the opening pages. I thought I was getting a dark stalker romance with Deviant Virtue but this book was so much more than that as Bratva princess Ekaterina (Kaya) witnessed a murder attracting the attention of Davorin, an infamous hitman but nothing was what it seemed in this steamy game of cat and mouse and everyone seemed to have their own agendas. The characters of Kaya and Davorin were so complex, with Kaya especially a product of an horrific childhood. Something about the other draws this pair together but probably not in a healthy way and every time I thought I knew what to expect another facet to their characters was revealed. With secrets, betrayal and treachery at every turn all I can say after finishing this book is WOW!!! I’m not even sure if it ended on a cliff hanger or not but I know I can’t wait for the next book to see who’s left standing.
Wow…just…wow. Immediately I was immersed into the politics, complicated relationships, and character and world building. Kaya was so badass and my heart went out to her for all she faced at her father’s hands. Dovarin is so mysterious and hot. The plot twists were crazy and the whole book in general kept me on the edge of my seat.
I did not except this book to end the way it did. I just know the next book will be chaos.
I really don’t even know where to start with this review. This book actually has me speechless. I was and currently still am obsessed with these characters.
I feel like I need to start with Ekaterina because wow, I’m absolutely in love with her. She’s such a badass. The amount of shit she had to go though and still being such a strong character was amazing to read. I’m also kind of scared of her because she does not take anyone’s shit (Especially Davorin’s).
Speaking of Davorin, he was the PERFECT MMC. His obsession with Kaya has me in a literal chokehold. I love when the mmc would do absolutely anything for the fmc and he was that man. I love him, I love both of them.
I honestly don’t think I could tell you a single bad thing about this book. The characters, even the side ones had so much depth and I’m intrigued by all of them.
Also, that cliffhanger? I was on my fucking KNEES. Ekaterina is that bitch. Truly. 🤣
I am so grateful that I was able to get an arc of this book and I can’t wait to read everything else this author puts out.
Wow. I absolutely loved this book and it had me hooked from the first chapter.
This is a dark romance with all the vibes and I am here for it.
Ekaterina and Davorin are just savage and a little unstable but they just work. She is brutal! But it isn't surprising after what she was put through as a child. The intimate scenes were just perfection.
I have a soft spot for Dominik I just thought he was a great character and I liked Rhea too.
There were twists and turns and things are not always as they appeared. I cannot wait for book 2 (I hope there's a book 2 after that ending!!)
A dark, sexy and incredibly addictive read.
A huge thank you to the author and Next Step PR for my ARC.
DEVIANT VIRTUE by Kat King is the First book in the Mastermind Series. This is the story of Ekaterina Kalashnikova 'Kaya'. Ekaterina is a mafia princess but she isn't a weak one and is more on the dark side. When she keeps running into Davorin who is a killer/assassin there is a attraction between them. I enjoyed this dark romance and I hope to read more from this author / series soon.
This book was fan-freaking-tastic!!!! WOW! When I say that I devoured this book, I well and truly devoured this book. I started this before going to bed and I had such a hard time putting it down. Immediately I became consumed by the story and needed to know more about the masked man murdering people in the alley. Do not expect to find a damsel in distress because you will not find that in Ekaterina Kalashnikova. She is ruthless, cold, and, willing to sacrifice anyone that stands in her way. I THOUGHT I knew what I was getting into with this book, but boy was I wrong in the best way possible. This book was outstanding in my opinion and I hope and wish for a continuation of this story. To say I was well and truly gobsmacked at the end of this book would be a gross understatement. Highly highly highly recommend!
First of all, what a cliffhanger I've experienced reading for a while! Makes you itch immediately for Book Two, which is going to be a little ways away.
But back to our FMC, Ekatarina or Kaya is not your typical damsel-in-distress mafia princess. Such a refreshing read! She is equipped with a strong-willed personality and the fight-for-independence against her own family. I can't wait for more revelation of the pain she's been put through by her own father, and how it's shaped her to be what she is now 🖤
Davorin, our hot AF psychotic MMC is lacking a little on his POV, so I'm hoping to read more his side in Book Two, and of what craziness he's been through before he crossed paths with Kaya. I fear the tsunami of Book 1 is going to make our two MCs drift further apart, but I hope somehow or rather, there's a fight to get back to some normality in their diabolical situationship.
I am somehow, also really keen on reading Rhea and Dominik's potential side of the story… VERY INTERESTING arc there…🤞😘 and third to Aleksei's arc of course. Only if Kat is going to expand on the brothers' side of story.
All in all, great Book One so far! Great introduction to all the characters in the novel, but you know there will be more details to come in the next instalment. I am looking forward to continue the journey with #Ekavorin and the Kalashnikova brothers in Book Two 😘♥️
I'll die gladly if it means dying by your hand, little lion.
🌟 Star Rating - 5/5 🔥 Spice Rating - 4/5
What To Expect: 🖤 MF ❤️ DARK 🖤 Stalker ❤️ Russian Mafia 🖤 Strong FMC ❤️ Cliffhanger
Davorin was a psychopath. A dangerous man. A stalker. And his object of obsession was me.
I am in absolute awe with this book, it still has me completely in shock and I don't know what to do. First of all, that cliffhanger had me throwing my kindle across the room I was NOT expecting that! Kaya and Davorin stole my heart and I need the next book now. The depth to their character development was absolutely outstanding, I felt I could feel all their emotions (which Kaya is not good at showing!) and to see into their thoughts really helped with the plotline. The heroine was a strong badass human who doesn't take anything from anyone which I LOVED, and the hero is so unhinged it was delicious! I think I've found a new auto-buy author and I cannot wait to read her books when they release!
So Kate debuted again and still managed to get it wrong. How does an author do that? It’s quite interesting and I guess concerning. I read Beyond The Blood a couple of years ago I think it was, and it was a mess to put it simply. This was a mess but a tad better, nevertheless still unbearable. When I came across Kate a few months ago whilst on TikTok, her new book was promising. She had made a couple of videos and it sounded okay. I wanted to read it thinking she was so much better and that I would be satisfied.
Kate had clickbaited her own book. She told us it would give us said trope but in fact it wasn’t near to that. She claimed it was a dark romance but this wasn’t fair at all. It was like any other book and served nothing. It’s meant to be mafia but nothing was given. No backstory, no context, literally nothing. I never thought the mafia was this boring, because this book never gave the thrill or excitement of the fictional mafia world we love to read about. There are small authors on Wattpad who are doing better than this absolute shit show. Mafias have so many aspects and this is just terrible that I can’t even tell you that side of the plot.
Kaya was meant to be a badass character who was this mafia princess who called and made the shots, a sting woman who never let anyone walk over her, but in reality, everyone walked over her. She had a stalker for crying out loud, and at the first moment decided having sex with him would solve it all. The female lead was just annoying, she was lazy and made me want to rip my eyes out. Her monologues were just boring and she had no other interests at all. I can’t even tell you how old she was, or what her favourite colour was, or anything. I have read the dark verse and I was sensing some Morana vibes, and maybe a little Penn from Sinners duet. Can this author be original?? Kaya was also an awful friend, she was an awful breathing thing. I could sit and complain about this character all day, but I have more to say about other things in the book.
And what’s his name again…I have forgotten the male lead's name, that’s how irrelevant he was. He acted like he was some old stalker but he was such a pussy. The author thought he was some sort of genius throwing around gold dice, please…who does that? It sounds like another Sinner’s anonymous duet or some made series man. And the dice played no part in the storyline, what are you trying to do? Make him look cooler because yet again you can’t build a personality for a fictional character. It’s so easy to make them attractive and hot, but there’s nothing nice about him.
Together, the interactions and conversations and all of it were so boring. I was falling asleep. I hate them together, I sometimes felt like it was siblings having a sexual relationship because that’s how it was. And Kaya let this man carry on…WOMAN YOU ARENT FITTING INTO YOUR CHARACTER?!!!!! The little lion nickname was just not it because she was honestly a damn puppy. A blind one too, because that guy was a red flag he low-key made Joe from you a nobody. The smut was just jarring, she really wrote “you squeeze my cock so well” HAHAHAHAHA WTF ARE YOU FIVE??? I’m laughing right now.
Erm…what else happened? I honestly can’t remember anything because nothing was significant for me to remember. The daddy issues and trauma were just like any other story I have read. It’s nothing special and I hope Kaya recovers from this trauma in the future I guess…? And her brothers, B O R I N G. And I quite frankly don’t give a damn about their books or that other girl in the book, Sloane, Sasha, Sienna. I have no idea.
The plot twist. Kate wanted to pull a Rina Kent put but massively failed. What stupid twist was that? I never saw it coming, but it was just so dumb that even when it happened, it wasn’t great.
Finally, I just want to say it wasn’t so bad. The writing style has improved but isn’t ideal but it’s okay. I wish Kate the best and I hope the next book is better, I hope her next series is better and I just hope she gives another genre a chance as she could give it more justice. I hope my review wasn’t too harsh but it’s honest and just the truth.
She's unhinged, a psychopath, emotionally unavailable, a ticking time bomb. Strong is not even how you describe her. A female lead in the Mafia world that is not weak, helpless or innocent. She takes matters to her own hands, is the only person she relies on, confident in her skills, intelligence & abilities. Even one of the most feared contract k!ll3r worships the ground she walks on. I LOVE HER.
A daughter of an ex Pakhan who just wants out of the mafia world.
This book is fast paced but it didn't lack on the plot. The plot is far from something I ever expect. Saying my jaw dropped at the end was an understatement. If i were to read this when it just published & had to wait for book 2 with THAT cliffhanger, I would've throw a fit 😫
I jumped straight to book 2 immediately. It's GOOD.
