Review for complete series

I believe Rockin' Heaven is the series where Sakai makes a big leap in her manga career and matures a lot in terms of writing and art. The first volume still shows several traces of her older style and somewhat disproportionate face, especially for male faces, but it solidifies so much over the course of the series and by the 8th and final volume shows a very confident and nice art style which has lasted through to her most recent works.

Also the plot is much stronger than her previous works - on the surface, this seems a very basic shoujo manga filled with clichés and a shallow lead character. And perhaps that impression isn't entirely wrong, but Sakai handles it really well. Our main character Sawa is about to attend her new school which she purely chose for the sake school uniform. It's only after she enrols that she realises that this was a formerly all boys school now open for the first time to girls as well and she is only one of two girls in her new class which also happens to be a rather infamous one for slack rowdies. On the surface, the second girl Akira's only purpose is only to play second fiddle to Sawa who takes centre stage in this boy-filled class room stage and of course the ring leader Ran is the most handsome and also happens to be the director's son - clichés are unavoidable, especially in the first volume. But I believe that Sakai has smoothly carried these characters through this eight volume series with some surprisingly mature themes all the while avoiding some of the common downsides of these tropes.

First and foremost, I was glad to see that neither does Akira purely play a secondary figure, nor do all the boys gather around Sawa. Of course, there will be certain jealousies and dramas, but that's to be expected in a scenario where there are only two girls in a class that otherwise only consists of boys. But I appreciate that there was a good focus on friendships among the classmates both amongst each other but also between Sawa and Akira and between them and the other classmates. There were a plenty of moments where it seemed a potential romantic rival could have been introduced, but I felt that this was kept to a relatively low level when I compare it to other works of this genre.

There was a healthy and realistic focus on how Ran and Sawa's relationship developed. I was surprised by some of the decisions they made along the way but in a positive way. Were they the best decisions? Perhaps not, but I could relate to where the characters were coming from. It also dealt with heavier subjects such as loss of family members, attempted suicide and pressure from parental expectations.

I enjoyed Sawa as a character and, although she sometimes seemed a little too selfless, I thought it was well explained in the later half of the series and how it ties in to her own family background and how even in her selfless way she develops selfish thoughts and feelings. It is by no means the deepest manga series out there, but I do believe it has some thoughtful scenes and is all in all one of the superior series of its kind. You definitely can't go wrong with it if - like me - you simply enjoy shoujo high school romances, clichés and all.

Sawa ist noch immer schockiert über das, was sie gesehen hat. Ist Ran wirklich mit Yuri zusammen? Eine Welt bricht für die Schülerin zusammen und sie weiß gar nicht so recht, wie sie Ran gegenüber auftreten soll. Als auch noch Schulfreundinnen von Yuri auftauchen und Sawa von Ran wegbringen wollen, scheint das Fass über zu laufen. Und wäre das alles noch nicht schlimm genug, wendet sich ihre beste Freundin Akira von ihr ab, weil sie denkt, dass Sawa nicht wirklich mit ihr befreundet sein möchte. Nachdem Sawa verzweifelt versucht mit Akira zu reden, bekommt sie Hilfe von ihren Klassenkameraden, die die kleine Sawa und Akira endlich wieder als Freundinnen sehen wollen.

Wieder einmal ist Mayu Sakai eine wunderbare Fortsetzung ihres Mangas gelungen. Die Story besticht weiterhin mit wichtigen Dingen wie die erste große Liebe, die Bindung zwischen guten Freunden und Schulproblemen. Ich mag die Geschichte, weil sie so herzlich ist und immer wieder durch ihre niedlichen Zeichnungen besticht. Sakai hat sich wirklich sehr viel Mühe gegeben und das kann man auch sehen. Empfehlen möchte ich diesen Manga allen Mädchen die eine leichte Liebesgeschichte mögen und gern träumen. Ihr werdet begeistert sein!

Another fun volume, but a little clunky in transitions between stories. The first two chapters heavily followed the romance and were really sweet, then the last two chapters followed a friendship plot line. With how the romance ended in the second chapter, it felt odd to completely transition to a different topic. I did like the focus on the friendship though, as I was wanting some more development of the side characters.

After all this years I still don't understand why Sakai-sensei does those PERFECT scenes between Sawa and Ran and ruins this fuzzy and adorable feeling by putting a friends fight at the end of it...

achdem sich Ran immer weiter von Sawa, aber auch von seinen Freunden entfernte, versuchte Sawa in Band 2 die Ursache für Rans Verhalten zu erfahren. Nachdem man als Leser am Ende von Band 1 erfuhr, dass Sathosi (einer aus der Runde rund um Ran) sich in Sawa verliebt hatte, überracht einen umsomehr zu erfahren, dass Rans Rückzug weniger damit, als vielmehr mit bereits Vergangenem zu tun hat. Ran beging in der Mittelschule einen Selbstmordversuch und glaubt nun, dass seine Freunde nur aus Mittleid mit ihm befreundet wären. Sawa versuchte nun die Freundschaften mit ihrer süß-witzigen und überaus motivierten Art zu kitten. Kaum beginnt dies Erfolg zu zeigen, taucht Rans Ex-Freundin Yuri auf, die ihn unbedingt zurückgewinnen will.

Band 3 beginnt am näschten Morgen, nachdem Sawa mitansehen musste, wie sich Ran und Yuri umarmen. Sie steht derart neben sich, dass sie im Sportunterricht von einem Ball stark am Kopf getroffen wird. Ran verbietet, dass jemand anders sie zum Krankenzimmer bringt und trägt Sawa selbst dorthin. Statt Herzklopfen entsteht jedoch eine Spannung, da Sawa beleidigt reagiert, als Ran (von sich aus!) die Situation rund um Yuri erklären möchte.
Beim Versuch sich von Akria helfen zu lassen, lässt diese wiedermal nur die Mangaka raushängen und erklärt, was für ihre Mangahandlung von Vorteil wäre.

Yuris Schule plant gemeinsam ein Schulfest mit Sawas Schule, weswegen Yuri und ihre Freundinnen nun öfters am Schulgelände sein werden. Yuris Freundinen bedrängen Sawa auch prompt, um ihr klar zu machen, dass sie sich von Ran fernzuhalten hat, damit Yuri eine Chance hat.
Sawa bekommt ein klärendes Gespräch zwischen Ran und Yuri mit, in dem dieser auch gesteht eine andere zu lieben.
Kurz darauf fährt die Klasse ans Meer. Dieser Ausflug führt auch zur Klärung der Beziehung von Ran und Sawa. Es knistert!


Der Band ermöglicht Einblicke in Akiras Gedankenwelt. Der zweite Teil des Bandes beschäftigt sich vermehrt mit Sawas und Akiras Freundschaft. Dadurch gewinnt der Manga zunehmend Tiefe und zeigt, dass er nicht nur eine oberflächliche Shojo-Geschichte ist, wie es sie öfters gibt, sondern eine fein gestrickte Geschichte mit Höhen, Tiefen, Szenen zum Schmunzeln und welchen, die einen in den Manga versinken lassen.

Die Zugabe bringt dem Leser die Familien der einzelnen Charaktere näher.

Ach herrje, ich hab die vorigen beiden Bände vor Jahren gelesen und dachte, dass ich jetzt endlich weiter machen müsste. Hab den Band angefangen und fand es soooo kitschig, dass ich abbrechen musste. Weiß echt nicht mehr, was ich damals daran gut gefunden haben könnte, mal abgesehen vom Zeichenstil, der sehr hübsch ist! Aber so ne pure Jugend-Romance-Geschichte ist halt echt nicht meins...

This Volume has been the cutest one yet! Ran and Sawa are an adorable couple and Sawa and Akirs have hit a rocky road in their relationship. But their makeup was so cute and happy I cried! (I'm not too sure why though dice I rarely ever cry). 5 stars I love this manga! (Ran is so hot <3 )

Series Review: Rockin' Heaven is a cute and short manga that was fun to pass the time with. The characters were good though I sometimes questioned their reactions to certain events. The plot wasn't that in depth but still enjoyable.
