Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years.

A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.

Singleton Carrie lives in a beautiful house, she’s rich and has clawed her way to the top. Tony has oodles of money and all the right connections and a much younger trophy wife in Monika. Grace is a personal trainer who carries a heavy load. Alex is a psychologist who knows them all and their dark secrets. When Monika is found murdered, who is responsible?

I enjoy this thriller even though it takes me a while to read it. The different perspectives keeps the interest alive in figuring out whodunnit. There are multiple twists towards the end though the final one is not too hard to figure out. It’s a good fast paced, character driven psychological thriller with numerous secrets all are keen to keep hidden. A fun read.

"Money can't buy happiness", but it may ease some troubles in certain cases. "The Rich" by Rachel Lynch is set in Cambridge and follows a group of characters who come to realize the truth of the aforementioned adage.

Dr Alex Moore is a successful psychologist trapped in an unhappy marriage to Jeremy, an alcoholic and unemployed. They have three children: 18-years-old James, Lydia who battles bulimic, and Ewan who faces bullying at school. Among her patients are Carrie, a wealthy businesswoman; Henry, a former criminal; and Grace, an influencer and a fitness trainer, all with troubled pasts and hidden secrets. When Monika, the young Eastern European wife of their close friend Tony Thorpe, disappears, rumors fly. The plot thickens when her beaten body is found, and DI Paul Hunt, a misogynistic and inept man, is assigned to the case. He clumsily delves into the lives of the rich and neurotic yet privileged individuals. What comes to light will either shock you or not, but one thing is clear in this web of deceit: there is a murderer on the loose.

The book narrates the story from multiple perspectives, with only Alex's perspective told in the first person. The rest are written in the third person, and I found the writing in this perspective more engaging than the first-person narration. The author skillfully incorporates flashbacks into the story, shedding light on the victim's final days and adding to the suspense. The main characters are complex and flawed, but I didn't connect with any of them and changed my opinion about some of the protagonists midway through the story.

Sex, drugs, and murder sum up the book perfectly. The premise seemed promising, but unfortunately, it fell short of the mark for me. The story had a slow start, and I struggled to immerse myself in it. It does improve in the final section of the book, as more tidbits come to light and tension and action intensify. Themes like drug use, bullying, bulimia, infidelity, and dysfunctional families run through the narrative. I appreciated the way the author connected the dots, provided insights into the lives of the wealthy, and woven the storylines together.

It is ironic that Alex addresses other's issues but fails to confront her family's problems. The saying "the shoemaker's children go barefoot" certainly holds true in this case. I couldn't understand why she didn't leave her husband, as it was evident from the beginning that there was no love lost between them.

I found the ending and the message it conveyed unsatisfying. While I anticipated some twists, such as the murderer's identity, others took me by surprise. While the concept excited me, the execution left much to be desired, leading me to give this book 2.5 out of 5 stars. It was challenging to become fully engaged in the book until the final section, as the pacing was slow, the plot dragged, and the ending felt weak. Additionally, I never reached a point where I genuinely cared about any of the characters.

I refrained from giving it just one star because the plot was intricate and well-thought-out, things got really interesting toward the last section, and I enjoyed the dynamics between the characters. Their interactions and inner thoughts revealed much about their pasts and motivations. While not fully engaging, it wasn't a bore either. The book also raised some interesting moral questions about choices and how far will one go to protect a loved one. A tighter plot could have made it a much more gripping read.

Probs like a 2.5

It was quite slow and didn’t leave me wanting more until right at the end. The writing seemed to get worse throughout the book for some reason.

As a massive fan of Rachel Lynch and having read all of her previous books I’m sorry to say I really struggled with this one. I’m not quite sure why as I liked the premise of the story it was a clever one but I found it hard to connect with the characters and although they all had good stories to tell with a huge amount of secrets but it just didn’t seem enough to keep my interest although I did finish the book as I wanted to know the outcome. The writing was spot on just as you would expect from this talented author and the book was a quick read and I’m really hoping we shall have the next instalment of the Kelly Porter series soon.
My thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion

This was an easy read although not really that fast paced. The character development was really well written as I felt like I understood the characters well which I think for the plot of this book that you needed to. There were a few different aspects to it that intertwined but eventually built up the bigger picture.
This was definitely a great concept of a psychologist counselling these rich clients who seem to have everything but have some dark secrets to keep.
There were a few twists and turns which I didn’t see coming and it wasn’t all as plain and straightforward as I thought it was going to be.
A great book for those who want an easy to read crime/thriller that has you guessing but also flips it round

This is a quick read with a complicated plot and equally complex characters. Dr. Alex, a small town psychologist, is trying to balance her own personal struggles while helping others manage theirs. Carrie, Henry and Grace all have something to hide from their therapist, but when their neighbor, Monika Thorpe, ends up dead, one of them might be guilty of murder. Plenty of drama ensues with lots of secrets, lies and unexpected twists. Can Dr. Alex get to the bottom of this mystery? Thank you Netgalley, Canelo, and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be available for purchase on November 9, 2023

A twisty psychological thriller that has you suspecting everyone for the dastardly deed. This novel opens up with the murder, and then for the first part of the book you aren’t entirely sure who it is that was murdered. Everyone knows everyone in this story; and that includes secrets that they want to keep hidden. It is a slow burner of a psychological thriller, the first part was a bit slow at times. It does pick up though; I read this fairly fast after I started to get into it, it had me wanting to know what secrets everyone had and who actually committed the crime. Overall, a good read.

In a wealthy neighborhood in Cambridge, money can buy just about anything. Or so the rich seem to think. But as you dive deeper into the layers of their lives, their therapy sessions, at the gym, etc it quickly becomes apparent that while the surface is shiny and eye catching, much more sinister and rotten things lurk below the surface. After a woman is murdered, it seems like everyone that knew her had a reason to hurt her. Can money make this go away?

Thank you to Love Book Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

You can deduce almost immediately who the murderer is with this, but as someone who is more interested in the ‘how and why’ reveal, I’m ok with that. It was also quite nice to be right for a change and see how the guilty party played it out. I think the twists came from how they were handling the situation, rather than who it was or wasn’t.

What’s prompted me to leave a review is that I loved Rachel’s style of writing. It’s just of a good quality; it’s always welcome when you feel compatible with an author and how they communicate their story. I didn’t feel like I was desperately racing towards the reveal, but enjoying the book. It’s not a ‘read in one sitting’ book but it’s fun to pick up when you have the time to read.

I will say there is some debatable injustice and as a person that upsets me, but as a reader I love a bit of chaos and know it needs to be explored. It was a palatable amount of injustice.

~ Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the free digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. ~

I hate to say that this is my lowest rated book of 2023 but here we are. I had such high hopes going into this one so I'm disappointed it didn't live up to expectation.

The premise of this is what enticed me but I guess I was expecting something completely different. The only thing that stopped me from DNF'ing this halfway, aside from needing to know who committed the crime, were the short chapters, but somehow it still felt really slow paced. Not much seemed to happen until the last half of the book and even then everything felt predictable and lacking substance.

I understand the title is literally The Rich but the constant reminders of just how rich the characters are got so tiring; I lost count of how many times Waitrose specifically was brought up. As well as this, if it wasn't obvious the book was set in the middle of summer, the mention of how hot and sweaty they all were in almost every chapter made sure you couldn't forget. Because of this, the writing felt immature in most places and it made it tough to get through.

We seemed to be introduced to a lot of characters at once too which I personally found it hard to keep up with. I can't really understand what the point was in giving the main character three children when only one seemed to be part of the main plot— also unsure what the point was in giving the daughter an ED when it never seemed to relate to the story besides the very occasional side mention of it. I'm assuming the characters were all meant to be unlikeable to a degree but I didn't find any of them fun to hate either, they were all just kind of meh.

The ending wasn't a saving grace for me either unfortunately; it felt a little rushed and I predicted the 'twist' right from the first couple chapters. I so wanted to love this book but it just wasn't for me.

AD/PR - The Rich is a brilliant and twisty thriller full of sex, lies and murder where the rich realise money can’t always save them.

I’ll admit I went into this expecting a fun and easygoing guilty pleasure read that I could switch off and enjoy. I did get all of that but it had sooo much more substance. The Rich weaves this tangled web of interconnected characters and timelines where you have to stay sharp to follow who knows who and what their role in this murder mystery is. I loved how all these characters and storylines were juggled without it ever feeling confused or too much. It all came together brilliantly in the final part of the book and the ending left me completely satisfied.

Overall, a thriller you won’t want to put down once you start! A very clever murder mystery full of unreliable and unlikeable characters doing very bad things. Loved it!

Well it took me three attempts to read this but I’m glad I persevered. I have read all the DI Kelly Porter books by Rachel Lynch so I know I usually like her writing. There are a lot of characters and I wasn’t progressing through it fast enough to remember them all. My advice would be to start this when you know you have a lot of time to dedicate to reading it. Now that I’ve finished it I can appreciate how clever the storyline was. Most of the characters made it onto my suspect list at some point and I definitely didn’t predict the ending.

I was instantly drawn to this book by the amazing front cover!
It looks idyllic - the beautiful serene scene of a sunny pool - but that tag line! I was hooked!

I loved that we were following this one from the pov of the psychologist - privy to many of the neighbourhood's views, thoughts, feelings and fears.
When a murderer strikes, trying to work out who has the means as well as the motive to kill just left me reeling.

This had me gripped from page 1 and I literally flew through the book as I just couldn't put it down!
I had so many theories going through my mind that it was all I could think about whenever I wasn't reading....and this dragged me back, desperate to find the outcome.
I will say, that every theory I had, was totally wrong!

There were so many twists and turns that I didn't know who to trust and where I was half the time.

The characters were as expected .... The rich were pompous and annoying and boy can they hold a grudge. Their lives like a soap opera and the secrets they all hide! Wow! - absolutely and completely believable!
The DI, tired and old school.
And our wonderful psychologist, clever and on point!
Perfectly presented and brilliantly worked the whole way through - I loved them all!

A brilliant fast-paced and exciting read! I really wonder and hope that we might see more from some of these characters in future books.

Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for my opportunity to read and review this book.

The story is based in Cambridge and the locations are very descriptive in particular how the houses are described in their opulence. Dr Alex Moore is married to Jeremy and they have 3 children - James, Lydia and Ewan. The story is well balanced and full of how the Rich live their lives. The plot is super fast, full of twists and turns with unexpected threads of how the characters evolve, how they seem to intersect within the book and how deceit, lies and secrets appear among them all. The ending came as a complete shock to me, which I never saw coming. I will be recommending this book.

Set in an elite suburb, when one of their neighbours turn up dead, the suspects are endless. Everyone has something to hide and the secrets were so juicy that I lapped them up! The story did take me a little while to get into but once I was in, I was hooked. Rich people behaving badly are so fun to read about and the twists the author incorporated into this story were fantastic. I never knew what was going to happen next.

The Rich by Rachel Lynch is a very slow burn psyhological thriller with an emphasis on character development.

It is a steady paced but very character driven and therefore quite a slow read. I liked getting to know the person's traits and enjoyed reading about them. I also liked different points of view. I enjoy both first and third person narrative.
The book touches on so many important issues most of us are dealing with today. The presentation of them is pretty raw and realistic. I liked how it was portrayed but wondered is it possible that every character had some sort of really big problem in their lives.
I found it strange how the main character although a professional who helps other seems ambivalent and so static in solving hers and her family's problems.
After a while it was hard for me to keep interest in the story as not much happened apart from the very beginning where it started with a bang, it then really slowed down and didn't pick up until the very end.
I can't say that I cared much for the ending.
It showed a lot of promise, the plot was good, the characters were well developed and genuine, but the pace and the ending ruined the overall impression for me.
What I mostly liked about it was a very realistic presentation of current state of most of our lives.

The cover may suggest a story centred around a wealthy woman living a life of luxury, but there is very little indolence or indulgence in this psychological thriller. Instead we have a fast paced, tensely plotted tale of murder, partly narrated in first person by a psychiatrist, Dr Alex, with narrative switching to suspects in a murder case involving her friend’s beautiful, younger wife.

This is compulsive, dark reading with some trigger warnings around abuse, rape and eating disorders. Whilst Alex counsels her clients, her own family are clearly in need of help, and meanwhile a misogynistic police officer is looking for a likely candidate for the role of murderer. With red herrings aplenty, and central characters who are fairly dislikable, this is a great book to dip into and by swept into whilst all the pieces slowly slip into place!
(I picked this proof up in our staffroom and this is exactly the sort of read that I enjoy as an ‘in between’ book - not requiring too much thought, but entertaining. Rachel Lynch is a safe pair of blood stained hands!!)

The Rich by Rachel Lynch

Dr. Alex was the psychologist to Cambridge. In the neighborhood, we had Carrie, Henry, Grace and Tony. They all had dirty little secrets and these were kept by Dr. Alex.

Until their neighbor Monika Thorpe was killed. Dr. Alex knew all of them had the reason to kill Monica. But who?

I love the story plot, which was wonderfully executed. A slow-burnt, yet enjoyable crime fiction. The small neighborhood but full of gossips and drama. The rich and elite people, but full of dirty dark secrets. The content involved sex, drug and murder, which was somehow relatable to if you’re rich, you’re able to play the game.

Money can bring happiness, but it can’t buy you everything.

Many thanks to @lovebookstours, @canelo_co and @rachellynchcrime for my copy.

Alex is a psychologist who works with many wealthy clients. When three of them get caught up in a murder investigation, Alex realises that her unique position gives her an insight into who could be a killer.

The Rich is a book that ticks all the boxes for me - mystery, intrigue and great characters.

I loved following this story with its brilliant and twisty plot. I simply couldn't wait to find out who the killer was and what motivated them. It is definitely a book you will easily get stuck into and not be able to put down.

The characters were all so different and each had their own unique perspective on what was happening. I enjoyed being able to follow the connections between their stories and try to guess what was going on.

If you love shocks and twists then this is definitely a book for you.

Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Review

I took a wee while to settle into this book, as none of the characters are immediately likeable or relatable, but I think that's the point. Everyone has problems and no matter how much they flash their cash, money can't buy them happiness.

Their wealth and their woes are what unite them and the story becomes more and more intriguing as we discover just how entwined and tangled the characters' lives are. But who is pulling their strings?

From a slow start, I ended up loving this book. I didn't guess who was behind it all for a while and, even then, it was just a gut feeling.
