When I was a little boy, I really enjoyed Norse, Roman & Greek Mythology. I was never exposed to Egyptian Mythology (other than a few Universal classic films; especially the Karloff), so this interested me.
I'm not certain why this didn't connect with me more. Either there was too much information for a newcomer, or too little. I'm guessing too much, as I feel that to retain a significant amount of this brief book, I would need to read it several times. It also felt somewhat "dry".
The author starts the book talking about a multitude of Egyptian "Dynasties". I finally had to look up "Dynasties" in Wiki to learn exactly what they are (a period of time where a country is ruled by 1 family is a simple answer). Part of the challenge for me understanding the ancient Egyptian mythologies presented in the book is there are so many dynasties (this is likely not myth) that I had difficulty following it.
One thing I really liked, though it was said in a moderate manner (more so than I would say it), is in 3 spots the author made comments that Christianity (& the other currently accepted form of religion) are no less mythology than the ancient Egyptian concepts & texts this book is about. I personally feel very strongly about that issue.
To sum up, if you are new to Egyptian religious history (& to a much lesser degree, Egyptian real history in general) & either retain new information quickly & easily or are willing to read the book several times, this may be an ok starting point. As it's the only book on Egyptian Mythology I've ever rad, I'm not in a good position to judge if this book is a good stating place.
