3.5 Believing, Hopeful Stars

When I started reading this book I thought it would be a story of discovery; of how two lost people would find themselves through each other and then carry on.
And it was... yet it was more than just that.
It examined how things are never what they seem.
How you can have money, fame and talent and be poor in family, caring and self-worth.
How you can experience unspeakable horrors, grasp for survival and still cling to the elusive concept of hope.
And it touched on how faith can hold all things together and show a way to be who you were meant to be...
This book has real characters which may have some questionable moments but who always make you want to root for them.
The added benefit of this tale was how the beauty of art, nature and the human spirit all came together. If you wish to spend sometime thinking about the big picture of life and what it could bring if you leave yourself open to hope, then take a afternoon and go Chasing Stars.

A poignant read, "honest truth".
To be honest, I'm still trying to formulate the right words to express how I feel after reading this book. Chasing Stars starts out to be just like any other book about the privileged kids of Hollywood. Portia, Niki and Tarry are three friends who, even with all their parents' money and fame, don't have loving and nurturing family lives so growing up, they end up relying more on one another. Their friendship and loyalty are evident when they make their "very own list of fabulous things to do" before they die which includes "falling in love, walk through a sea of butterflies and getting matching tattoos".
But the real story begins when Portia McGee, an Oscar-winning actress, comes to Will's tattoo shop to get some temporary ink done for a movie role. There's an obvious sexual tension between them and Portia, being her usual untamed and wild self, tries to seduce Will who is "six feet of pure, defined muscles". He doesn't give in (but he is affected) and she feels sad and disappointed when she sees him wearing a "shiny platinum band" on his finger, not that it stops her from flirting with him anyway and then BOOM... they KISS! Hello, fireworks!
But at 19%, I was dying to know WHAT IS UP WITH THAT RING!!! Sorry, you're going to have to read it to find out. ;)
Will is more than just an awesome tattoo artist. He paints and we find out that he is sort of a prodigy. We also learn that he is adopted and that he has a troubled past (don't they all). I do love me some dark artist. Portia, on the other hand, is apparently more than just another pretty face. Beyond her tabloid persona, she is a hard worker who doesn't complain, goes to the set early and is the last one to leave. Although she's far from being a saint, she is but a lonely, insecure girl who only wants to be loved by her parents but ends up often rejected.
I really liked Chasing Stars because of L. Duarte's writing (and to think it's her debut novel). It's smart and almost poetic. I liked how the story focused more on the main characters' personal issues rather than make it melodramatic with more of the Hollywood angle. For me, I liked how it made me think and feel (and I'm not just talking about hormonal reactions). It definitely added another profound perspective to how I see life and love.
But here's the thing, there is a spiritual aspect to this book. I understand that some people might feel uncomfortable reading about Will's strong faith in God. Believe me, I've read a couple of books that talk about faith and religious beliefs and I remember cringing a lot. To think I'm Catholic!
Yet with this book, it didn't bother me as much. In fact, the way it was written into the story had somehow made it convincing for me, which in turn, made me accept it for what it was.
But wait, just because there's a spiritual aspect doesn't mean that the scenes between Portia and Will are all innocent. Don't expect to read smut but they are WAY TOO STEAMY to be called dry. Having said that, I'd like to point out that for me, with everything that they've experienced in the past - the drugs, too much alcohol and being out of control - especially Will, the only way for them to heal is to have faith and hope that there is indeed light in the darkness.
Chasing Stars is about forgiveness, second chances, and finding your soulmate. It tells us that every moment we've had in the past leads us to our present and our future. For Will and Portia, their story has a bittersweet ending (but don't worry, it's definitely a HEA).

His music selection is freaking awesome. I consider stealing his iPod before leaving. Just a souvenir of the day I was rejected.

I KNOW when I read something within a few pages if I like or love. This BLOWS me away. I have almost 30 quotes. What I loved was the deep story and the ultimate foundation for the entire story was FAITH, God, love, family and hope.
"Though we had all the money most people can only think of, we were the rejects of the plastic city of LA, where artificial is the norm and the normal is outdated"
As very wealthy family begins a life, here is Portia. She is perfect and soon to be a star herself. Her Mom and Dad divorced and she immersed herself with her best friends Tarry and Niki. All three come from wealthy family backgrounds. Portia McGee and her friends created a list "Things to do before we die" yeah I know I wanted to kick Niki myself for naming it that. Anyways they make the list and start checking things off. The base of their childhood is friends. They have Estela who is Portia's nanny. There is a story about how she learns Spanish from going to Guadalajara and saying she is a relative so that the kids will play with her. The only real Motherly love Portia gets is from Estela her Nanny. As the three go on to their lives, they get together and make it fun whenever they can.
Portia has to get a temporary tattoo for a big role. Enter Will, the artist. He is not a traditional tattoo artist, but a recent grad of the Columbia school. WOW a smart, talented artist who can tattoo.
What I LOVED was the meeting of Will and then his family. His life was so tough and I won't elaborate and spoil that part, it is to be read and savored. When he introduces Portia to Dan, his Pastor Dad and Maritza, his Mom along with the overly outspoken and protective sister Melody (Mel). I loved Mel for the way she protected Wil. She was one of those I hate her characters, but that is the author's beauty of storytelling. When you think you can't stand someone, but you do totally get the dialogue and where they are coming from. Mel is also very forgiving, very pregnant and very loving. The fact that she is on leave from being a police officer is exceptional character placement to me. Her partner Lucas is a sub-plot character, that only adds more depth, showing why she is a fierce protector. Her Husband Tim is in Afghanistan and again the message is family, Dan and Maritza really support her during this trying time. Then there was Rick, the co-owner of the tattoo shop. Now he adds certain messaging to the story, which relates well to Will's growing up.
It doesn't take long for Portia to understand what Dan's valued have done to Will. He has taken this kid, made him into a better person and shown him the Lord. Will has accepted it and leads a life based on faith and giving back.
So as you know, when I believe in something I sell it big. THIS is big. I hope and pray that the message is received and just maybe touches a few people. I want everyone to read this and take a new and different meaning from the many lessons that are here. Don't just know something, but feel it, live it, grow from it, and experience it.

It is both well written and a wealth of story telling genius. I always say if you read something and it leaves an impression, share it, pass it on, shout the title and get others to read it. I will make sure others read this. I am so thankful the author found me and let me experience her writing. Bravo!!

What a great book! This book is not your typical story line, which is completely refreshing. Sometimes in this genre (which I do love so dearly) you feel like it's a matter of inserting different names into the same story, but not here.
There is a strong religious aspect to the story (one that seems almost unbelievable in this day and age) but as a religious person myself, I thought it was great. That being said, if you're not a person who is into any kind of faith, this may not be the book for you, but if you are... you'll love it! In all the steamy books out there, most stories have the characters jumping into bed instantly, but Duarte didn't and still managed to make even kissing just as sexy. She brings readers back to the basics. It almost reminded me of middle school and how I forgot that even just making out can be incredibly exciting and make your heart race!
I don't like writing reviews with spoilers, so I won't get any more into the story, but suffice to say that I highly recommend Chasing Stars to HEA lovers! L. Duarte has done a wonderful job with her debut novel and I'm looking forward to reading more from her!

Wow! What a stunning debut novel from author L. Duarte! A very real read that tugged at the heartstrings.
I’ve had ‘Chasing Stars’ on my to-read list for a while, eagerly awaiting its release. I was lucky enough to win a Kindle copy in a giveaway by the author, and that’s where my love affair with this book started.
Chasing Stars was a phenomenal and emotional read which has stayed with me for days after finishing it. It tells the story of Portia, a young, troubled and misunderstood actress and the journey of her growing love and relationship with Tattoo Artist Will. I was very impressed with L. Duarte’s ability to portray a character who in any other circumstances would be quite unlikeable, as a sad and lonely character whose deep rooted self-esteem issues lead her to live an empty life of drugs, sex and partying that she thinks she deserves. Discovering the inner Portia was a wonderful journey as her relationship with Will leads her to realise that she can be a better person.
Will is one of those book boyfriends who just captures you immediately and his every kind word and action tugs at the heartstrings. I felt so emotionally engaged with his journey, and liked the religious elements that were infused into his storyline, without being too in-your-face, or pushy. I loved how the author connected two very different people and had them both bring different essential aspects to their relationship. The clashes the two had as Portia travels down a route of self-destruction after believing she deserves no better was beautifully put together and I found myself on tenterhooks as I wondered whether they would be able to overcome the storm brought about by Portia’s stubborn, selfish and sensitive nature. Her reaction to Will’s ex Pamela was great fun to read as I loved seeing the jealous side of Portia that she would have always kept under wraps if it were not for Will having made her more human.
Without giving too much away, I loved the opening prologue that was set in Portia and Will’s future, and seeing how this unfolded in the later chapters. I read with tears in my eyes and my heart pounding painfully. There was some clever and frank writing by L. Duarte and it made for some exceptional read.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was how real the issues that the story dealt with were portrayed. This was particularly poignant in the epilogue where we hear of what has transpired for all the main characters in the last year. Whilst some characters get their happy endings, others still struggle with drug addiction, loss and marriage to a man who it was suggested once beat them. This gave the story a satisfying and realistic ending which was refreshing to read.
Unfortunately there were a few typos that slipped through the editing process, but this doesn’t stop ‘Chasing Stars’ from being a wonderful book and it was truly a pleasure to read, and one of my favourite reads for 2013.

So the honest truth is this...
When I first started reading this book, I was fighting the urge to put it down and walk away. I really couldn't stand Portia, but I made it my mission to finish it.. I am very glad that I did!
If you might not already know this about me, I love books about broken characters. Chasing Stars is that type of book as well. From the start, I didn't think both Portia and Will would be as broken as they were. As their history begins to unfold, it is hard not to empathize with them. In fact, I might say it is down right impossible, especially Will (BTW, he is absolutely book boyfriend material. Whew! Talk about swoon!). Even though I grew extremely frustrated by Portia's actions and beliefs, in the end she won me over. =)
Sometimes as I read books, I think of how I'll rate it. So while I am reading this, I am thinking 2 or 3 stars. Then a little more than 1/2 way through I am thinking 4 stars... By the end of book I am wanting to jump up and down chanting 5 stars!!!! This book was fantastic! Sure, Portia got on my nerves, but she eventually redeemed herself. I absolutely loved and appreciated the faith aspect of the book. Not many books have that. If you're big on faith you should defiantly read this book. If you're not too big on faith you should still read this book. :)

"As we stroll down, I remember the day I died. Life has been generous to me. I am neither perfect nor conceited, but now I understand my WORTH. I am right where I am supposed to be, with exactly what I was meant to have..."
I can't explain how thankful I am that I had the chance to not only receive review copies of CHASING STARS #1 and #2 BUT also the fact that I was able to be a part of such an amazing story! I know that that may sound cheesy but gosh did I love reading this book. I finished it in two sittings...actually, scratch that, I read it in what felt like less than 5 hours in total - yea I'm not joking! I couldn't have finished it faster if I tried.
I wont make this a very long review simply because I think the book deserves to be read from every corner to the last, and I want you guys to experience all that without any spoilers (even by accident). But believe me, I would write a whole essay on how much I enjoyed this book. So I will keep it simply and to the point - and let me know if there's anything else you guys would like for me to clarify before you pick it up yourself!

You can so easily relate to them that is feels as if you have been friends with them for years.
Easily understood in terms of how & what they express about themselves.

Notboring or predictable in the least bit - but rather the opposite hence why I read it in less than 5 or so hours ;)
Author understands the way a readers mind works when they read a story, so you don't feel as if you are thrown all sorts of details and every important inch of the story from the get-go or through the rest of the book. L. Duarte captures the readers attention and doesn't let go until the very last word of the book! I am in complete and utter loss of words for how much I loved her writing style. I really mean this with deepest honesty as I find it hard to love a story/writing style/theme as much as I loved it in Chasing Stars.

"...We are an example of perfection to anyone looking from afar...
Portia at first seems to be a very simply and normal airhead type of celebrity through what the media portrays of her. But we all know that what the media shows/tells us is anything but complete truth. So when she meets her tattoo artist that she has to work with for the duration of her film, a completely mesmerising story unfolds.
They are both sceptical about each other, though they do feel a strange spark between each other.
Portia knows and has been known to change boyfriends or boy toys at a blink of a night out and she also seems to hold the typical type of movie star persona were she parties most nights, gets drunk, does all sorts of drugs...and anything else you can think of in that type of area. Will on the other hand is the type of character that has his past be of influence towards how he turns out in the future. He was an orphan from a very very early age and due to moving to a number of different foster homes & from the unfathomable treatments that those foster families did to him, he was a troubled child. Despite this, Dan (his 'father' and pastor) saves him in a very unrealistic way...which evidently makes Will become the amazing/sweet/caring/protective guy that he is throughout the story -- Hot & idealistic boyfriend materials guy character crush? Check actually make that a double check with swoon and no shame drool to the side -- no judging okay? I am not the only one here...right?...No? Liar! :P
At a certain point during the beginning of the book, Will's favorite song end up being Portia's favourite song as well, and though this may sound cliquey, cheesy or a very minor factor, it provided a very nice way of understanding the characters personality...without being thrown a wave of information. Moments like this last and grow even better throughout the rest of the story which was one of the many ways that made it easy to read & follow.
Similarly, whilst Will was riding back home through his journey in his car & at every other part that each or both of the characters have hours to spend alone (or doing something for long periods of time that doesn't involve too much energy), they are able to talk about their past in a way that made you feel even closer to the characters past life. The author manages to give important parts of the story at very smarts points through the book.NONE of the information, whether small or major, about their lives and how they feel about each other feels forced which makes it so much more enjoyable & fun to read about.
I wont tell you any more about what happens between the two of them but I can definitely inform you that this is unlike most other stories I have read. The different personalities, ideologies & values they both have, manage to co-exist and also sometimes (or rather at a few points) they become very troubling incidents...but they shape the characters in such a way that I couldn't stop reading about!! This book is a roller-coaster that after the first few chapters you'd think that it will only keep going upward BUT boy does the last third of the story become anything butboring/predictable aka sadness and joy together in one package...
I couldn't really fault this book in any way. I tried but came up short. I gave it a rating of 5 or 4.5 because of everything that I tried to explain above. This is one of my favourite stories because if anything else, its mainly due to the way that the author managed to capture each of the characters in a mesmerising way. After I read the last page and by starting another review book the next day, I felt as if I was missing the characters...that's definitely a weird thing to admit since they are fictional, but if you read my bio you'd know that fictional crushes or a connection with amazingly crafted fictional characters is not something that comes easy to me BUT it's definitely there when I read a great story.
If that doesn't make you want to read this book, then I really don't know what would ;) I recommend this book to ANYONE and EVERYONE of the human-being kind - if you can read, you better read this book!! It's a book worth reading that will definitely change at least a small part of your 'life's worth' perspective - trust me!
Now, since thankfully I already have the second book, I will delve into it with probable regrets that I will end up half awake tomorrow but you know what? Idont care. I will apologise in advance to my other books in the waiting list giving me the evils, but I can't go any more days without finding out what happens next...

I can't explain how thankful I am that I had the chance to not only receive review copies of CHASING STARS #1 and #2 BUT also the fact that I was able to be a part of such an amazing story! I know that that may sound cheesy but gosh did I love reading this book. I finished it in two sittings...actually, scratch that, I read it in what felt like less than 5 hours in total - yea I'm not joking! I couldn't have finished it faster if I tried.
I wont make this a very long review simply because I think the book deserves to be read from every corner to the last, and I want you guys to experience all that without any spoilers (even by accident). But believe me, I would write a whole essay on how much I enjoyed this book. So I will keep it simply and to the point - and let me know if there's anything else you guys would like for me to clarify before you pick it up yourself!

Author understands the way a readers mind works when they read a story, so you don't feel as if you are thrown all sorts of details and every important inch of the story from the get-go or through the rest of the book. L. Duarte captures the readers attention and doesn't let go until the very last word of the book! I am in complete and utter loss of words for how much I loved her writing style. I really mean this with deepest honesty as I find it hard to love a story/writing style/theme as much as I loved it in Chasing Stars.

Portia at first seems to be a very simply and normal airhead type of celebrity through what the media portrays of her. But we all know that what the media shows/tells us is anything but complete truth. So when she meets her tattoo artist that she has to work with for the duration of her film, a completely mesmerising story unfolds.
They are both sceptical about each other, though they do feel a strange spark between each other.
Portia knows and has been known to change boyfriends or boy toys at a blink of a night out and she also seems to hold the typical type of movie star persona were she parties most nights, gets drunk, does all sorts of drugs...and anything else you can think of in that type of area. Will on the other hand is the type of character that has his past be of influence towards how he turns out in the future. He was an orphan from a very very early age and due to moving to a number of different foster homes & from the unfathomable treatments that those foster families did to him, he was a troubled child. Despite this, Dan (his 'father' and pastor) saves him in a very unrealistic way...which evidently makes Will become the amazing/sweet/caring/protective guy that he is throughout the story -- Hot & idealistic boyfriend materials guy character crush? Check actually make that a double check with swoon and no shame drool to the side -- no judging okay? I am not the only one here...right?...No? Liar! :P
At a certain point during the beginning of the book, Will's favorite song end up being Portia's favourite song as well, and though this may sound cliquey, cheesy or a very minor factor, it provided a very nice way of understanding the characters personality...without being thrown a wave of information. Moments like this last and grow even better throughout the rest of the story which was one of the many ways that made it easy to read & follow.
Similarly, whilst Will was riding back home through his journey in his car & at every other part that each or both of the characters have hours to spend alone (or doing something for long periods of time that doesn't involve too much energy), they are able to talk about their past in a way that made you feel even closer to the characters past life. The author manages to give important parts of the story at very smarts points through the book.
I wont tell you any more about what happens between the two of them but I can definitely inform you that this is unlike most other stories I have read. Sometimes, if we are lucky enough, we come across a great book that hits you like a punch to the gut. Well, today was my lucky day! Chasing Stars blindsided me with a round-house kick to my heart and put an unrelenting choke-hold on my soul. Every word, from the first to the last, reached through my kindle screen with some crazy voodoo, Harry Potter-esque magical shit and branded me. (yup, I cried a few times, I'll admit it)
Ms. Duarte is either a witch or a damn genius. I’m betting on a little of both. The way she writes is pure magic. I still can’t believe this is her debut novel! Where have you been, woman, and when can I get more of you?!
I shit you not; this is one of the best books I have ever read! Alright, time to put my inner fan girl on the back burner so she can simmer down a bit. A few amazing characters are in need of some attention now.
Portia:
Her name just screams “self-righteous rich bitch” don’t you think? Yeah, I did too. I was positive I was going to loathe her and that she would be some whiny brat who thought the world would stop spinning if something didn’t go her way. NOPE. I was wrong and I’ll be the first to admit it.
She was born with a golden spoon in her mouth. Yeah, she could probably wipe her ass with my paychecks, but all the money in the world couldn’t fill the voids in her life. The media paints her as a shallow actress who treats men the same way she would a new Prada purse; use it until the next new style comes out. Which, that part is true I suppose. She doesn’t do relationships, doesn’t do feelings. She knows the effect she has on men and enjoys every minute of it. She knows that all she has to do is throw them her signature smile and her sex-me eyes and they’ll be eating out of the palm of her hand (among other desirable areas).
Every now and then she will be confronted with a challenge, which brings me to my next character. Get ready to swoon, ladies!
Will:
Oh, Will. He is a walking work of art, let me tell you! His body was sculpted by Greek Gods I just know it!
Anyways… I had an insta-love with him, no doubt about that. He’s an artist, a very, very talented one at that. He’s a tattoo artist and he loves it, but his true happiness comes from a paintbrush. When he paints, he digs deep into his soul and rips out a piece of him to splatter onto each and every canvas.
He grew up completely different from Portia. While her life was full of unicorns and rainbows, his was filled with dark, dirty demons that still continue to haunt him. She would never understand. So when she walks into his shop to get a temporary tattoo for a new movie she’s shooting, he doesn’t buy into her bullshit. He’s been dealt a shitty hand in the game of life and is finally in a good place. The last thing he needs is some high maintenance spoiled brat to come into his life and turn his world upside down.
But, the world works in mysterious ways. Some people are brought together for a reason when you least expect it and this story is a perfect example of that. Chasing Stars is a beautiful story that teaches you to look deeper, love harder, and to surrender yourself completely even if you don’t feel like you have the strength to do so. Sometimes a second chance may be your only chance, and if you’re lucky enough to be given one, don’t waste it.

This is a book to feed the mind, body, and soul. It sparks many emotions throughout the read. I admit to struggling in the very beginning, the opening catches you, then there is a slow build up of what is to come. When you get to the mild lull, keep reading its so worth it and the build up is necessary.
Portia, a selfish, spoiled movie star......or so she portrays. Inside is a broken, neglected, lost girl just trying to find her place in this world.
James Williams Miller "Will", what can I say about the man with such resolve, determination, and self control. Overcoming a childhood that most can only imagine, to find family, unconditional love, acceptance, and faith. He is not the "alpha" male but has those caveman urges. He is an emotional man. He is what drew me in so hard to this book.
A simple job brings these two together and their undeniable chemistry takes hold. Love, a seed buried deep inside us waiting on someone to come along and water it so it can sprout and grow.......that is how Portia describes love and its true for these two.
This book contains some steam, some drugs, and a lot of real emotion. It will stir something deep inside. This book is a complete novel, no cliffhanger, but I would love to see "Nillie" Nikki get away from the CEO and feed those sparks with Lucas. And oh the broken Tarry, how I wish for him to settle and overcome his demons. Mel, the best sister ever, overcome her loss and have a HEA as well. I loved this book and want more.

I received this book from the author through a giveaway. Overall, I thought it was a pretty well written book that I wanted to read from start to finish. I never found myself bored of the story and was always wondering what was coming next. I loved that they did not just jump into bed together and there was a buildup with the two main characters.
With that being said, there were a few things about the book that bothered me. I should note that I am not a very religious person, but I am open to learning about other people's views and respecting them. There is a strong religious storyline in this book, which did not bother me at all, in fact I felt as though it made the book very different from other novels that I read. One thing that perturbed me about the use of religion in this book is that it portrayed the idea that you have to "be saved" to be a good person. Also, Will, the main male character who preaches this faith, is the most judgmental and in my opinion, overly possessive character in the book. Otherwise, Will's family is an exemplary example of an understanding, guiding, and loving family. Some other minor annoyances were the overuse of "Baby" and of cuss words. In a novel, cuss words are generally used to portray emotion, whereas here they were just used to be used, which I found unnecessary and distracting.
Overall, I would read the book again. The love story was unique and captivating.

Speechless, so emotional.
I can't barely describe the feeling that this book has given me. I have read many many books, but none like this one has had me teared eyes and wordless. I love this story, I love how everything make dance and how it kept me so intrigued to turn every page. I think everyone who comes across this book should deff read it!!! :) Amazing story y'all xD

This was a beautiful story about being loved when you feel unworthy of love. I really enjoyed reading Portia and Will's story. I really enjoyed how the author incorporated faith and God into this book. The ending have me in happy tears. Onto the next book :)

I really liked this book. It had a religious aspect to it but it wasn't preachy and it still had a little of that steam that I like in contemporary romance. Can't wait to read the next one.

This is a story that's been told many times in many ways, but with some interesting twists.
This is a story about Portia McGee, a neglected rich daughter of a wealthy businessman and a famous actress who ignored her and rejected her. She turned to the only family she knew and that was her two rich friends Niki and Tarry. They made her feel loved and they sought each other to feel what their parents couldn't give them which often included drugs, alcohol, and trips to rehab. They never engaged in relationships to avoid more pain. They all ended up in the bright lights including the screen and music scene.
Portia threw herself into her work as an actress and it paid off through respect from the movie world, an Oscar and the obsessiveness of the media. She "learned very early, how usable we all are, and how vulnerable you become, when you become attached to someone. Instead of being used, I became the one who uses others." "She rarely does seconds. So whatever happened was it." People didn't expect her to have a heart and she was expected to be conceited and spoiled. She lived life like it was a role and rarely let anyone except Niki and Tarry see the real her.
Enter an up and coming painter and tattoo artist James "Will" Williams Miller. Their paths cross when he is contracted to do her temporary tattoo for her movie and she is enthralled by this "dark beauty" who is "six feet of pure, defined muscle." She embarks on a romantic journey with him that leaves her scared and confused and on the path to self discovery. She learns Will has a dark past as well and has chosen an interesting way to move forward. A way that Portia doesn't understand, but finds she wants to. He was an orphan who led a life of abuse, crime, and addiction until he was rescued by a pastor and his family. Will chose a life of faith and purity and is "committed to abstain from sex out of wedlock, alcohol, and drugs." Portia finds she respects his decision, but questions whether they are too different. Portia learned "...somehow, we find what we are looking for even when we do not know what it is." Portia makes some bad choices during a press tour out of her insecurity and leaves Will questioning his feelings.
This book is hard for me to describe my thoughts. It was different with the faith piece and I truly liked that twist, but found it hokey at times. It was an interesting thought to believe that we have a second half and we just have to demonstrate faith to find them. The characters were deep and their pain was intense and it was amazing to see Will overcome his pain in a positive way and it was admirable. Their relationship was kinda hard to grasp onto though. It was almost too instant and seemed too hard to believe. They almost seemed to be in love too quick and Will was rushing Portia to meet his family after they knew each other for only a few days. Their dialogue was often cheesy and hard to relate to. This book leaves you with a lot of cool thoughts though, including defining our purpose here and how powerful faith can be and to believe in second chances. "Sunrise is a reminder that every day is a new beginning."
One of my favorite lines from the book was :
"I am nether perfect nor conceited, but now I understand my worth. I am right where I am supposed to be, with exactly what I was meant to have. I acknowledge and receive it gracefully."

I picked up the debut novel 'Chasing Stars' based on the recommendation of a friend, and I'm glad I did. This is the story of Portia, a selfish movie star, and Will, a painter/tattoo-artist, and how their worlds are changed when fate (or divine intervention) brings them together. The fire and passion during the first meeting is palpable, but each one has their secrets and personal experiences that dictate their goals and actions.
Will had a hard childhood, to put it mildly, and now those experiences are strongly tied to his faith and beliefs. Portia, born into a life of privilege, was seen only as an inconvenience to her parents and seeks refuge in her friends and in the arms of a different man each night. In the beginning she is portrayed determined and feisty, and her plan to seduce Will is intriguing, but some of that passion fades and for that reason I couldn't connect with her as much as Will. She went through a great deal of personal growth, which was good to see, but she did it without as much struggle as I would've expected from someone as strong-willed as she is. I love how Will, and faith in general, is explored in the book. It is present and focused without being preachy, which is a very fine line to dance along, and Duarte handled this wonderfully.

Her descriptions leave you with a clear vision of what is happening and you can easily understand the feelings each character is trying to deal with and work through. First let me say that I did not think this book was going to capture my attention when I first started reading it. However, Once i start a book I always finish no matter how I feel about. And I am VERY glad I finished. Never judge a book by the first few chapters. That is why I always finish because you never know what is lurking within those chapters...Prime example!
Will & Portia are broken souls.
Will had a very traumatizing childhood which included, abuse of all kinds, rape, death, abandonment etc.
He had a battle within himself with drugs. He made a vow and stuck to it.
Did he need saving or was he here to save someone else?
Portia, is a beautiful, actress. Upon meeting Will she was very sexual and unattainable.
Portia, also had a hard life, she was always set aside never had the family she always craved.
When she met Will, he showed her what it was like to "feel" to "love" he showed her she was worth something.
Portia never knew what love felt like until Will entered her life. Given a second chance at life, she never took it for granted again.
This story was extremely heartfelt, I cried, laughed, and experienced points where i could breakdown for both characters when there were things they were experiencing together and apart.
The love that they have between them is amazing, Will is an amazing person, extremely talented and a firm believer in God. He can make you look at life in a whole new light, and that is exactly what he did when Portia entered his life.
He showed her that life is A GIFT everyday.
This is a mist read story for anyone who wants to see struggle, pain, heartache, love, and a very unexpected happy ending.

This story was delightful. What I thought was going to go one way and I thought would be predictable was no way near the truth. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the dreamy, dreamy hero.
Will, a painter and is renowned for his tattoo abilities and art work. A once broken teenager who endured the foster care system and rose above his past to become the man he is today.
Portia, famous movie star from a rich and famous, loveless home, looking for love and value in all the wrong place.
They meet when Will is commissioned to tattoo Portia for an upcoming movie she is starring in.
Their love story starts out rough, but becomes so, so sweet. This story is also one about a faith in something bigger than yourself. Really enjoyed this story.

I received this book through first reads. At first it was hard for me to get into but after the first chapter or 2 and I got into the characters it became interesting. It was very easy to relate to the main characters...although I don't think there are many men like Will out there although most women are looking for him! (I was able to relate to his past as it has some similarities to my fiances past which gives me hope.) Portia was very relatable and I think most women can relate to her in more ways than one. The underlying message in the book is amazing and unless you pay attention to Will's values you miss it until the end, but once you get it, it hits hard and inspires hope. I would definitely recommend this book especially to anyone who has given up on love and faith.

There was instant intense physical attraction when Portia, an Oscar winning actress, stepped into the shop of Will for a temporary tattoo. They were polar opposites where Portia was shallow, promiscuous and lived a life of Hollywood debauchery while Will abandoned his life of drugs, was reformed and living a spiritual life. He even wore a purity ring to show his commitment to avoid sex outside of marriage, drugs and alcohol. However, they were soul mates and Will helped fill the emptiness of Portia’s soul with love and care. I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and I like how the author wove spirituality into their relationship.

I absolutely love this book, the way it reads is almost hypnotic. The characters are written so well. L. Duarte you write beautifully. I was privileged enough to win "Chasing Stars" in a giveaway and I think the book chose me! I would recommend it to anyone! I'm ready to read more! Thank you so much.

This was a beautifully written story of 2 broken souls finding home, love and security. Portia & Will are so different that coming together is just so right. I love the journey they take together.
The secondary characters are also just as wonderful. I adore the bond, loyalty and friendship Tarry, Nillie and Portia has. I look forward to the next book.
