Gobbelino London & a Collision of Catastrophes

Rate this book
“Ay up, Mogs. Bringer of mad tidings. What is it this time?”
“End of the world,” I said.
“Can’t get much madder than that.”

We hadn't planned a return to Leeds. Not yet, anyway. It was all a bit dicey, what with half the Folk in the city wanting us dead, and apparently having no reservations about making it happen.

But our friend Gerry is missing, and we've got to find him. Never mind the fact that anyone who can take out a troll is operating way above our pay grade. It's not like anyone pays us anyway, so what've we got to lose?

It doesn’t take long to discover a missing troll is the least of our worries. Leeds has blown straight past dicey and into end times. The necromancers are back and as power-sotted as ever, and this time it's not just a few cats they want dead. It's everyone.

So if we want any chance of life as we know it to continue, we need to stop them as well as save Gerry. Easy, right? We only have to get past Callum's dodgy family, my dodgy past, hopped-up magic-workers, feral weres, shady magicians, and the ever-present, ever-treacherous Watch.

Oh, and did I mention the sorcerer's still giving me out of body experiences? Yeah. Good times.

At least it can't get much worse. Can it …?

This is the seventh and final book in the Gobbelino London, PI urban fantasy series, centred around the adventures of a mercenary feline PI and his human sidekick. It contains snarky cats and other gods, many bad jokes and terrible puns, plus a large serving of mythological and real creatures behaving badly. It will appeal to anyone who likes their fantasy funny, modern, and filled with friendship rather than romance - and also to those who suspect their cat may be living a great and secret life when they're not looking.

A Collision of Catastrophes contains some violence, particularly involving over-enthusiastic senior citizens and enraged cats, but none of it is graphic. It contains no sex and only mild language. It does, however, contain blasphemy.

Hello lovely people!

I’m Kim (as you may have guessed, given that you're on the author page for Kim). I write funny fantasies and off-beat cosy (or cozy, depending where you're from) mysteries set in a world not so dissimilar to ours - and in fact sharing many locations.

And in this not-dissimilar world you'll find mystery-solving dragons with a strong affection for barbecues and scones, and snarky feline PIs with human sidekicks. You'll run across baking-obsessed reapers running petting cafes stocked with baby ghouls, Apocalyptic riders on Vespas, and women of a certain age Getting Things Done. There may even be the odd born-again troll redefining troll-ness for the modern age about the place.

You'll find myth and reality clashing in small and spectacular ways, and discover the healing magic of tea and a really good lemon drizzle cake.

But, most of all, there will be friendship, and loyalty, and people of all species looking out for one another. Because these, above all things, are magic.

And you can find me rambling on about all this (and more) over on my website, or join me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for bad puns and many, many cat memes. Many.

Come join me!

A final, wild romp with our private investigator cat, his human partner and every sort of "Folk" you could imagine. "Folk" the beings of tall tales, short tales and creatures on the other side. Fauns, elves, trolls, ghouls, etc. Toss in necromancers, sorcerers, magicians, the Old Age Pensioners Army and, of course, cats and you have Kim M. Watt at her finest. Reading between the lines is recommended. The zingers are everywhere. Even in the copyright statement.

Other than a few short stories, I believe I have now read everything Watt has published, including those in her free collections.

Fun stuff!

I’ve been sitting here for a while now trying to organize my thoughts so I can do a review for this book. It’s a really difficult one for me since this series is really one of my favorites of all time and if you knew me and how many books I read you’d understand the significance of that statement. And bittersweet because this is the final book in the series. The final book!

Callum and Gobs have been scrambling for a while. Trying to stay one step, sometimes one whisker ahead of total disaster. And this time is no different. Our heroes are headed back, with crew, old and new (Pru, Tam, Malcolm and yes even Ifan, and others) to the place where apparently everything has been leading since the first adventure—the pocket town of Dimley.

It’s an incredible ride with thrills and laughs, peril and heart. Plus a very satisfying conclusion. A lot of tying up of loose ends 😉

Kim Watts worlds are like no others and I can’t wait for the next adventure in any world she sees fit to drop me 🙂

I received an ARC of this book and I can tell you unequivocally that the opinion in this review is all mine!

So it's goodbye (for now?) to Gobs and Green Snake, and Callum too. This was the best kind of series. Characters that you come to know and care about, watch them overcome problems only to end up in even more trouble, and end up saving the world, except when they don't. All with plots that twist and turn and never quite let you know for sure what's going on while you're laughing at the sheer insanity of it all. Top that off with the most fantastic world building you can imagine. Fashion conscious trolls? Zombie taxidermy? Feral unicorns and krakens and ghoulets, oh my! At the end of it all, you feel that they've accomplished something important, if not quite what they planned. The story line has been wrapped up, with enough loose ends that if Kim ever decides to revisit this world we have plenty of things to see and do and old friends to catch up with.

Kim Watt has amazingly tied up almost all the loose ends in a finale worth reading! I had to finish it once I started. Note to Kim: You're baby goats! This is the last....and no custard recipes? Lol

Gobbelino and Callum will be missed....the world is in dire need for idiom messing, snarky cats...and a small green snake.

Thank you, Kim

Phenomenal (maybe) ending to one if my favorite series. Probably the hardest to review without spoilers, so just take my word for it - You need to read this series!

We’re back with our magical PI duo for one last full throttle ride (if the Rover can take it.) There’s always a bittersweet moment when you open a final instalment knowing that you might not meet these characters again but also “new book!” MUST READ NOW!

You’d think that they couldn’t top having a kraken attempting to drown them at the command of the Sea Witch, but it wouldn’t be Gobbelino and Callum if they sat and waited for a new challenge to come to them. Having received a rather cryptic message from Poppy, they hop in their car and head for Leeds to check on Gerry and attempt to avoid Ez and as sure as Gobbelino loves custard, it’s not going to be pleasant.

What follows is possibly their most challenging job yet. Finding someone to talk to. There’s always someone Gobs knows, but not when they arrive. Not a soul can be found until they call on Ifan (against Gobbelino’s wishes) and that just opens the door for all the previous catastrophes to pile in for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

The only thing missing (in Gobs view, not mine) is a lack of custard.

This is my favorite book of this series! It was thrilling, exciting, perfectly paced and I couldn’t wait to find out how it would end. Perfect final book for this awesome series 😊. I also feel a bit sad that I finished the series though. I feel like the end did leave some room for another book, so who knows…

This is the final instalment of the series (sob!) but, wow, what an ending! You will need to read the rest of the series to get the most from the book. Do that now ;)

I'm finding this one quite hard to review without spoilers. So many tendrils made sense of. So much suddenly clear. All so beautifully wrapped up.

Ok, so. Characters: Ms Watt has done a skilled job developing not only the key characters/ protagonists, but many secondary characters in addition. The Watch cats are amazing. I really want trolls Gerry, Poppy and William in my life. Poppy in particular. I love her. Green Snake is fabulous in his unassuming way. He is my favourite little guy. I love that the older people in the story are so empowered and brilliantly sneaky. This warms my heart. Gobbelino is snarky, mouthy, often unpleasant but ultimately loveable and brilliant. Callum; well, I may have a wee crush on him. Ifan and Ms Jones are terrifying but engaging. The baddies are misguided and agenda-ridden but not portrayed as absolutely evil. There are shades of complexity in all of them, which gives them substance and veracity.

The storyline whizzes along at well-paced speed. There is love and loyalty, kindness, bravery, Doing the Right Thing Even if it's Difficult or Gut-Wrenchingly Terrifying, scheming and explosions. Car problems. Proper real-life stuff, hopefully minus the explosions. All taking place just out of the range of normal, close enough that one might catch a glimpse from the corner of an eye if looking at just the right time. It all seems so oddly plausible, which I take as the mark of storytelling done well. I'm 99% certain that the Watch is real.

Ms Watt writes an excellent story, with engaging characters. I love her writing and I recommend it whole-heartedly.

It’s the end “oh no it isn’t”.
I will start this review by stating I received a free advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I would have got the book anyway as I love this author and this series.
I did read it with a bit of a split personality: how do you read a book when you know it’s the end of series arc you enjoy and you want to know how it all ends, but don’t want it to loose all your lovely new friends? In the end I went for the, “race to the end you can always go back and read it slowly and even start again at book 1 to see if you missed anything”, approach. I think it would be very hard to read this book if you had not read the previous ones which introduce you to different characters in each book so you know more about them and what they may or may not be capable of.
There is lots of action, quiet moments of friendship, bizarre conversations, acts of high stupidity and awesome heroism and some truly inventive expletives. Can the end of the world be fun? Make your own mind up but I enjoyed it.
So is it the end of the world or not? Is it the end of the characters or not?
Slight spoiler alert my new favourite quote “We had won by the very fact that we were as wildly different as we were deeply connected”
So go read it, I’m off to find some custard.

Loved this one. Does a great job tying up the numerous loose ends we've been collecting. The tension and need to find out what happens next had me up until 4:00am, and I kept finding hilarious little snippets I had to send to me book friends. I'm sure they loved waking up to fifteen texts of out of context, chaotic snark and humor.

Our dynamic duo (and green snake of course) head back to Leeds to try and work out whats going on, which is easier said then done. Gerry won't answer his phone, Emma doesn't want to talk to them while Gertrude is being "re-educated", Jones just wants her dentist and the wolves have moved, taking Malcolm with them. Gobs and Callum find themselves on the magicians' doorstep, against Gobs wishes, but it turns out that not even Ifan knows what's happening.
Add in missing reaper scythes, necromancers that are determined to bring back the Old Ones and the end of the world, the Watch seemingly no longer caring, the Old Age Pensioners Army, Claudia MIA and Jones AWOL, and let's not forget Ez, Callum's mad sister, and her unicorn horn obsessed friend Kara. So starts the end of it all.

This book was everything I expect from Kim and more. Originally, I saw each book as a stand-alone story, but this final installment ties everything together; from the magic book to the zombies to the unicorns and onwards. Everything that Gobs and Callum encountered and fought through was all leading to this one moment, the end of the world. Or not, as a lot of people have something to say about it.
Answers to questions that have been asked since early on were finally received; we now know why the Watch is after Gobs and what he did, as well as what Callum really is. However, Green Snake is still as mysterious as ever, but who knows what goes on in a snakes head.

This series was amazing and will be sorely missed, especially Gobs snarky comments and witty banter with Callum. Every character Kim wrote into these books was unique and contributed to the plot and entertainment in their own way. It was a whirlwind of an adventure that I'm so glad I went on.
I need to go snag myself a copy of After The End as I'm not ready to say goodbye to these fantastic characters just yet.

If you have to end the series, this is definitely the way to do it! Any time a favourite series ends, there's the mixture of feelings that comes with 'endings' and you have to trust the author will use the same care and skill to end this series as they did starting it. Happily this was the best book in a wonderful series. Kim does an exceptional job of bringing all the favourite characters (OAP posse rides again!!) for one of the funniest apocalyptic battles ever. Even with a large cast the story never bogs down or feels like a forced reunion, everyone has their part to play. With her trademark wit and talent for vividly describing scenarios only her characters can get into we follow our friends as they struggle to save the day/world/reality one last time. Do the Eldritch horrors from beyond the dark stand a chance against snarky cats, a little green snake, a morally questionable magician, a doc Martin wearing sorceress with an odd attachment to a dentist, anarchy loving rodents, a mildly irritated troll, and a group of OAPs? Only one way to find out!

And the link to the bonus stories was such a treat!

Full disclosure, I was provided an ARC. This in no way impacted my review

And here we are at The End (for now). Gobbelino and Callum have led us a merry dance through their adventures, and this, the last waltz, tops the lot. Questions are answered, plots are resolved, character arcs hit their targets. Our scruffy heroes are back in Leeds, under assault from several fronts, and facing some unenviable choices. Who is friend, and who is foe, and which of the various possible foes is the real danger? The Watch? Ifan? The Necromancers? Ms. Jones? Ez? ... The less than dynamic duo navigate these currents more by luck than good judgment and it all comes to a grand climax in Dimly (where else) as the forces of light ... um, forces with greyish edges, anyway, confront the forces of darkness. Fans of the series will be pleased to see Poppy come to the fore ... and that's all the spoiler you're getting.

If you like contemporary urban fantasy with a large helping of humour ... you buy these books. New readers are advised to buy them all, and read them in order, otherwise you will never get the running gags. No baby goats.

ARC supplied in return for an honest review. Honest review appears above. Thank you.

This is the last book in the Gobbelino London series, and it very cleverly pulls together all the previous six adventures. All the past characters are in this excellent outing for our favourite Leeds based PIs and my goodness, Kim has them all working and earning their keep. Ms Jones is still missing, as is the beautiful Claudia, but Tam and Pru are supporting our intrepid, small but beautifully formed black cat as he and Callum try to save the world. Gobs excelles himself with his wonderful put-downs and snarky observations and proves that friendship is the strongest of bonds. As Poppy says, Gobs is " a good cat, not a nice cat but a good cat". There is not a dull moment and as usual, I am in awe of Kim Watts' beautiful prose, her descriptions of the Yorkshire Moors is breathtaking.

This book moved me to tears, but it also made me laugh out loud many times. So, if you like reading about aspirational ogres, obnoxious stabby unicorns, mermaids, werewolves, sorcerers and magicians, subversive Persioners and very snarky cats this book's for you.

"End of the world,” I said. "What, AGAIN?"
No, that classic Buffy response doesn't appear in Gobbelino London and a Collision of Catastrophes, but it's appropriate.

Building on all the Doom-adjacent close calls of the previous adventures, this one pulls out all the stops. Most of our favorite characters and villains show up for a slam-bang finale, in Dimly of course. Gobbelino learns why he was killed in previous lives and puts that to good use, Callum discovers (or yields to) his inherited power, and various sidekicks rise to the occasion in the final battle, while Green Snake and Poppy the troll play key parts in saving the world. Again.

Highly recommended to all Gobbelino fans and others who enjoy apocalyptic fantasy adventures, with a side of snark and a helping of hope to finish. However, you really need to have read some or all of the previous Gobbelino tales to follow the goings-on in this one.

I've taken a long time to read this, because if it's the last book in this series I wanted to savour it.

I adore Gobs, Callum, green snake and the rest of the gang. Oh and the OAPS had me mentally shouting YES, when they attacked the old one etc. Love them 😁

They'd do well and probably clash heads with our wonderful WI😮😮😁😁

Fighting to stop the end of the world, can our fantastic feline and his lanky human do it.

Will there be allies to help them??

Will life ever be the same??

For this you need to READ all of the books.

I cheered, shouted, yelped in a few places and held my breath in others.

Kim has a way of bringing sassy felines to life, not only Gobs, but the others too.

I do wish, down the line, Gobs starts knocking on Kim's noggin that he's got more wonderful stories she must write. Or even an appearance in Toot Hansell 😁😁🤔🤔😉

I'd highly recommend reading this series ❤❤❤❤

The Gobbelino PI series of books are a wonderful blend of action and humour. The characters are all interesting, well rounded and believable, despite the fact that very few of them are human. The good news is that we finally understand why everyone seems to want Gobbs and Callum and Green Snake dead.

The bad news?

It’s the End of the World and Gobbs is up against a Zombie Horde, a load magic users, werewolves and the great old ones. And backing up Gobbs? The Anarchic Rat Army and the OAP Army and one Troll. And maybe a Magician, a Sorcerer, some other werewolves, the Reapers and a dentist. Unless, of course, they are working with the bad guys.

If you like cats and adventure and mystery and magical creatures then this book is for you.

I loved this book as much as the others that I had read. Snarkiness at its best, twists and turns with results that you never see coming because you are too busy laughing hysterically! This book pulls together everything from the other books, revisiting characters that we've come to love; great story with WONDERFUL characters, sadly this is the conclusion. If you haven't read the others in this series, you really should for it to make the most sense, but, I hadn't read them from the beginning and really did okay. A great conclusion to the series, all the loose ends tied up neatly. Highly recommend this fun read/book/series.

I absolutely loved this book! Our old, familiar friends are back and things are definitely looking grim. No safe place to lay their heads, friends and allies thin on the ground, and strange happenings keeping everything stirred up. Can our heroes come through? You'll simply have to read it for yourself!

I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book and absolutely had to add it to my collection of Gobbelino books! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Gobs, Callum, Green Snake and all the rest of the quirky characters we've met, especially as it brings the series to a close.

This finale brings everyone back together: werewolves, necromancers, trolls, unicorns, cats, the magician, the sorcerer, mermaids, reapers, the OAP army, the rats of Dimly, and of course, our heroes, Callum and Gobbelino. Back in Leeds for an epic showdown, G. and C. London have to figure out who to trust, who's working with whom, and how to get badly needed help. Look forward to the unstoppable OAP army, an explanation for what happened to Claudia and the other "reasonable" Watch cats, what happened to Gerry, and more. I don't want to give too much away; you really have to read it to find out what happens!

Gobbelino and Callum's adventures come to an end with an appropriate bang in this final book in the series. Old friends and enemies make an appearance, the duo (okay, trio - can't forget Green Snake) are left to rely only on their own resources, and there's an apocalyptic finale, where practically everyone from the series plays their part (my personal favourite is Tristan's OAP army). Secrets are revealed, friendships made and solidified and Gobs remembers some of his mysterious past while Callum reveals more of his.

I enjoyed this final book in the series. It's a decent capstone to everything that went before, pulling together a whole bunch of different plot threads and characters from previous books. Given the kind of book, and kind of series this is, the end was never really in doubt, but there was a lot of drama along the way, as every ally and contact that the duo have made throughout the series gets stripped away, before the final act Big Boss fight.

There's a set of four short stories that are available for free that follow on from the book, forming a series of epilogues. I can see why Watt decided to split those off, but I think it would have worked as part of the book itself, but maybe that would have led to the Lord of the Rings style "too many endings" problem.

Watt does say that Gobs and Callum may return in the future, and I hope that they do, they're a fun pair and I've come to care about them and their various found family.

What wonderfully marvellous mayhem runs through the (possibly) final adventure of this PI duo, or trio, apologies Green Snake! From the first page to the last, it's chock full of action, excitement and chuckles. The vast range of people, of varying sorts, meshes together perfectly...many of them are still bouncing around in my head. There are old friends, old not-so-friends, new friends and new definitely not-friends who flow through the pages in a beautifully well crafted story so believably written that I suspect the author to have been a feline in a previous life.

It's an excellent book, I loved it, I would certainly recommend it, and now I'm off to read the entire fearless duo's (and eventually trio's) tale from the first book to the last!

Thank you Kim M Watt for sharing all this with us!!

Book 7, and possibly the last of this hilarious series. I hope not!

Gobbelino, Callum and Green Snake are knee-deep in the doodoo in this one. They're back in Leeds and it's all about to hit the fan. Characters, events and repercussions from books one through six are all about to come to a head.

My gosh this was funny. I mean the type of laugh out loud funny. Gobbelino's narration, poor beleaguered Callum, Green Snake's silent commentary, and the awesome OAP (Old Age Pensioners) army. I was so glad that the OAP were given a bigger role!

The afterword says that this may be the last Gobbelino book, so I'm going to stay positive and hope for another. I noticed that there's wiggle room in the plot, just in case. She also includes a link for some free short stories that take place directly following this ending.

This series will be on my re-read rotation!

I finished the series! What SHALL I do now?

I loved this series so much that I'll be rereading it while I still remember a lot of it! Usually I wait until enough time has gone by that I don't remember details, sometimes even plot or characters. But the world she has created here is a grand, rich mixture of humor and horror, frenzy and friendship. Especially in these last days of the run-up to the 2024 American Presidential election, where consensus reality may no longer be a thing in our everyday lives, Gobbelino and Callum have given me a place to hang my metaphorical hat: a world I'd like to inhabit in my head at least. Watt writes deliciously funny and skillfully warped stories and books. Being a childless cat lady I am of course most fond of the Gobbelino London series, but I've yet to read anything less than wonderful from Kim Watt. I recommend her to everybody.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased review.... more than a little late because I decided to re-read the whole series! Such a fun series! that is concluded in a masterful manner, with all the loose ends tied up and cameos by almost all of the cast from the previous books, and yes the story is finished ... but the author did leave some room for potentially more books in the same world or with the same characters, I personally want to know more about green snake, would love to see a book from his perspective!! A great series with unique characterization of mythical creatures that we think we know... creative worldbuilding with such snark and humour.. but you can't read just one! :) highly recommend.

Collision of Catastrophes was a great wrap-up to a fantastic series! It was very satisfying in that it revealed much of both Gobbelino’s and Callum’s mysterious pasts. There are still some questions that I have that, if by any chance more books come out, it would be really cool to see answered. So much camaraderie and friendship in this one, which is one of the best elements of this series. Gobbelino’s character really grows in this book, too, which was enjoyable to read about.
Reading this one was a bittersweet experience for me because I love this series so much and I knew it was the last one. I didn’t want to gobble this one up like the others because that would mean the end of the series, but I couldn’t help myself. I devoured it like all six of the others.

This is a bitter sweet review to write. I love this series, every crazy, snarky, magical moment of it and I hate to see it end. That said, this addition (and conclusion *sigh) is just as off beat and wonderful as all the rest. Gobs and Calum are back in Leeds to save the world and they’ve assembled a team of their old friends to help them defeat the necromancers and the dreaded Old Ones. I hope that Kim M Watt eventually has more in store for the snarkiest cat private eye in all of Northern England, but until then a fond farewell to a wonderful series from a splendid author.

Saving the world with a generous side of sarcasm...

The unlikely heroes of this series - a scrappy cat and his traumatized human - only make it more touching. Both are survivors, and while Gobbelino (the cat) may complain that Callum's sense of morals is inconvenient, they actually share a deep-rooted desire for justice in an unjust world. And they're hysterically funny too, enlisting rats, other cats, sorcerers, the elderly retired military OPS, civilized trolls, unicorns, reapers, magicians and a host of others to save the world. Delightful!
