Thank you NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Unfortunately this didn’t really work as a manga. So much is crammed into this and rushed through, it took me a long time to read and it never felt exciting or even interesting enough.

The illustrations are great and we meet a lot of interesting characters. Ryza and her two friends Lent and Tao, Bos & his friend Lumbar who they used to be friends with, Klaudia who is visiting with her merchant father and Lila & Empel who are good at fighting and alchemy and are investigating the many ruins on the Island. But we eventually find out what they are actually doing.

Ryza and her friends are tired of the boring and ordinary days on the island and seek adventure. On one of their adventures gone wrong, they are saved by Lila and Empel and they meet Klaudia. Empel is an alchemist and becomes Ryza’s advisor. Ryza has the aptitude to become one too but unfortunately we don’t get to see much or actually almost nothing of her practicing. Same for her friends who are learning fighting and deciphering old books from Lila and Empel. I would have loved to see fighting practice or anything from those seemingly interesting books! It feels like they tried to cram so much into this manga that there wasn’t space to actually go deeper into anything interesting. So they create a hideout but again, no details on how it was actually created (alchemy?) and Lila and Empel decide to stay there too. Klaudia uses it to practice her flute music and the others practice whatever they’re learning from Empel and Lila but we never actually get to see them practice. Klaudia’s father is so weird.. Testing Ryza in elaborate ways, which again we don’t get to actually see in any detail, before entrusting his daughter to her. The other parents aren’t any better, hitting their child or getting super annoyed their child isn’t helping at the farm all the time. It does get a little more interesting when we learn what Lila and Empel are upto and they start to involve the group of friends but overall, this gave me a slight headache and little entertainment. This had potential but wasn’t executed properly.

tl;dr
A video game adaptation that reads like a video game, punctuated with some truly beautiful artwork.

Thoughts
I didn't know this was a video game adaptation when I started reading it, but it only took two pages for me to figure it out. The main character introduces herself as a normal girl from a normal town, and then I turned the page and was greeted with a stunning JRPG heroine design, replete with accessories, extra belts, and cute thigh highs, all lovingly rendered in delicate inks and detailed tones. The rest of the book follows suit, with plenty of beautiful artwork and attractive character designs. Settings are also beautifully illustrated, making a book that feels very good to look at. The story in contrast moves like watching only the cutscenes from a video game. Plot points are doled out in spoonfuls, with missions and battles spacing them out evenly in such a way that you can practically see "New Mission!" alerts pop up on the screen. I think the biggest weakness here is that we miss out on the actual game portions. Alchemy is a core focus of the story, but it gets skipped over regularly because it's gameplay. Fights are handled very quickly, often in a few panels, to make way for the next cutscene. Overall, this largely feels like a book for fans of the game who'd like to relive the story in a more digestible form. As for me, I'm genuinely curious about the game now - so I guess the manga did its job after all!

Thanks to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for a review copy. All thoughts in this review are my own!

The Atelier Ryza manga is a solid companion piece to the game, offering a condensed version of the main story. It touches on all the key plot points, but unfortunately, it lacks the deeper, more personal conversations between characters that made the game so engaging. The art is definitely a highlight, capturing the vibrant world and characters well, and of course, the iconic "thick thighs save lives" theme is as present as ever (And can we blame them? THOSE THIGHS!!!!). While it’s an enjoyable adventure, it's clear that this manga is tailored for fans of the game, and newcomers may not get as much out of it. Overall, a fun read but not without its flaws—3 out of 5.

Ryza is growing up on her little island with her friends Lent and Tao, and quite frankly, they are over it. These three are looking for adventure and a chance encounter with the alchemist Empel and his companion. Lila set them off on the adventure to end all adventures.

I love this series, so there's just no way I wouldn't enjoy the manga. It is true to the game both by the storyline as well as keeping Ryza's reckless but wonderful sense of responsibility to those she loves. The art is, of course, absolutely gorgeous, and I loved how they were able to keep the same emotions that I had playing the game. Did I know they were going to beat the dragon? Yes, because I beat the dragon, but I remember thinking while playing that I was SOL, and was just as happily surprised reading it as I was playing it. To be able to capture that was really just amazing yo read.

Overall, of course I recommend it. The Atelier series and Ryza, in particular, have perfected the art of telling a coming of age story in gaming, and that has translated to this manga wonderfully.

As always, thanks to Udon Entertainment and NetGalley for the wonderful eArc! And now I'm off to play some Atelier!

I received an advance review copy for free from Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you Udon Entertainment for the opportunity to read this manga. This was an enjoyable read. This is the manga adaptation of the game, Atelier Ryza. The art is beautiful, The pacing is fast-paced. Although I have never played the game, I found myself liking the story and the world. I found the characters to be entertaining and interesting. I thought the ending was great. I am glad that I got to read this manga. I hope I get to read more mangas in the Atelier Ryza world. Overall, a great read.

Inspired by the RPG game, you meet Ryza and her friends.

Resalin Stout, or Ryza for short, and her friends, Lent and Tao, long for adventure. One fateful day, they encounter two travelers, Lila and Empel, after trying to rescue a girl named Klaudia, which changes their lives forever. As a result of this encounter, the three friends uncover their true calling and unravel some dark secrets about their island.

It's been a while since I've delved into the world of manga, so stumbling upon this gem was a pleasant surprise! What piqued my interest even more was the revelation that it was adapted from a game. The book is brimming with charm and unexpected plot twists that kept me engaged. However, I wish it delved deeper into the intricacies of alchemy.

Ryza exudes bravery and an infectious cheerfulness that resonated with me. Her character had many standout moments throughout the book. Tao provided solid support and guided the characters through challenging situations. On the other hand, Lent's impact on the story seemed minimal, and I found Klaudia's character a tad annoying. Lila and Empel were intriguing characters with enigmatic backstories that were skillfully portrayed.

Overall, I recommend this book to fans of Atelier Ryza who are curious about experiencing the game's narrative in manga form and anyone who likes an intriguing fantasy with a solid story.

Happy Reading, Paige ❤️ 📚

I went into this very well knowing it was a RPG video game. However, I have had it on my "to be played list" for some time, and have not yet gotten to play through it. That being said, after reading through this I really want to. Im not sure if knowing how the manga ends will ruin the game play or enhance it, we shall see.

I Do love the characters and how they have their own personality and quirks. I really enjoyed the story as a whole. However, I felt like the final fight was rushed, and felt a little one shot one kill done and over. I was really hoping for a more epic battle scene. Where we got to see how they all combine all they have learned and trained for put in to use.

The ending was, well ok. I wasn't a HUGE fan of how they end the story. I understand why, but unless there are more books to come it felt a tad empty, there felt as if there were connections and growth being made and then it was just, done and over. The ending made me want more, and if that is the intention then it worked really.

The artwork is really well done as well; each character was really drawn with intention and with emotion that really helped convey the feelings of the story.

After the disaster that was the anime adaptation, I’ll admit I was more than a little worried about how this would play out. Honestly it took the complete opposite approach to the anime by focusing almost entirely on the big picture and the trials and darkness that Ryza and company face. Of course, that means we lose a lot of the little details of the interpersonal relationships, but the core of the story was there and we hit all of the major plot milestones. I’d be interested to know what someone who didn’t play the game(s) or watch the anime would think.

As for the art, I think it was fantastic - it’s highly detailed and keeps all of the silly quirks of these JRPG character designs while also letting the characters be expressive. I would have liked to see a bit more scenery, though I suppose that’s more important for the two later games which may, hopefully, get manga adaptations of their own.

Nothing beats the level of detail in a video game that you can spend dozens of hours playing, but this manga does a very good job of distilling this story down to its most important parts and conveying them in a way that’s true to the original.

Thank you to Udon Entertainment for auto-approving me for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a delightful and fun reading experience. I have always seen/heard about the video games associated with this media, but had never got around to trying them. Now, I fully intend to jump in at the first opportunity. The characters were all interesting and made me cheer with them when they succeeded at things or made me feel bummed with them when they failed. The hopeful, determined elements of them were wonderful especially Ryza. While there are some dark themes dealt with in here - child abuse is mentioned a couple times in relation to one of the characters - it’s handled with gentle hands as the story addresses it. And the artwork does its best to help by not showing too much though showing enough to add weight to the story. My only issue was that in the beginning there were some shots of Ryza and another character that felt. . . unnecessary and inappropriate especially with it being established that Ryza is close to being an adult, but isn’t one. These fade away and rarely are seen later thankfully, and it becomes more adorable and charming.

Anyways, I’d totally recommend this to others and hope to read more works published by Udon or about this world.

Atelier Ryza: The Manga: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout is based on a game and only one book long. Perhaps this manga works better for those who've played the game, since I had hard time catching up what was happening. Ryza is a tomboyish girl and along with her friends she has to fight these monsters and save everyone. Mostly the manga is about relationships though and friendship. The characters talk a lot, but plot wise hardly anything is happening, which is why it's hard to follow the story. The panels are heavy with text and the fight scenes are over before they even started and no, I'm not a big fan of fights. It's just that I didn't really get what the monsters were or where they came from in the first place.

It's hard to cram fantasy story in one book. Considering this fact, the manga isn't all that bad. I liked the characters and their interactions with one another. This was probably the best part of the manga. I just wish the world building had been better, but perhaps this is meant for the gamers. As a sidekick to the game, this works nicely - but as a standalone? Not so much.

Thank you Netgalley , Udon entertainment, and Riichu for the ARC!

I saw this manga and instantly asked to get an Arc of it! I heard nothing but great things about the Videogame this is based off of, so I wanted to know just how amazing the Manga would pair up.

For starters , I believe this might be more enjoyable if you have some basic knowledge on the JRPG game, its characters, and the world itself. As someone who only heard of the name of the game itself, it was a bit hard to follow through with some of the world building, considering they rushed a few things here and there. I also wished we got to know more of the characters and their backstory to help understand their relationship to one another and how they became friends/ rivals (such as things with a character that only got explained much later and only very briefly).

Overall it was a fun experience and I really enjoyed the art. Just a few story plot lines that could have been extended, and some of the combat scenes at least stretched out a bit would have been awesome!

Thanks Net Galley for the copy to review. If I could use half stars I would give this a 3.5 stars but since I can’t I rounded up to a 4 star since it is better than a 3 star.

I have recently been getting into manga and when I saw this one that is an adaptation from one of the entries in my favorite video game series I was excited. If you are a fan of the Atelier Ryza games (or any games in the atelier world) you will enjoy it, it stays true to the story and the characters you already enjoy. If you have never even heard of the video games you will still enjoy it and not have any confusion.

This manga follows Ryza and her friends who live on an isolated island where no one comes or goes, but like most teens they long for an adventure. This follows their adventures as they set out to discover the world and of course save their home and friends.

NetGalley Review

Star Rating: ★★★☆☆

I liked this one, but I feel like it was very rushed. It made some really big jumps. The main character goes from being a normal kid with nothing to a beginner in alchemy right in the beginning. Which is fine. She's told that she's got potential, but is gonna have to practice. Okay, I'm still with it. She uses alchemy to build a fully furnished house. Wait... what? They story was neat, the villain's (monsters) had potential to be super awesome. I thought the lady behind the portal was going to be something crazy and a huge part of the story. Nope, wrong. I thought the book had great bones and I'd love to see the whole story stretched out and all the holes filled in. I want to read other works by this author too, to see if it's just this one I don't like.

Like always though, read it and decide for yourself

This is an interesting story about a group of friends that live on an island that no one is allowed to leave. They all dream about going on adventures! When one day a traveling merchant comes to their island and a girl is being attacked by monsters. They meet a couple people who are coming to their island for research. Their journey for adventure and getting stronger turns into a path to learn their past, and save their futures. As they uncover the past and learn about the dangers that lurk in their home they band together to save their home and set things right that were wrong by their ancestry.

Thankyou Netgalley and Udon entertainment for providing me an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was so happy to see this! they really should more graphic novels/manga's from games! This was a really fast-paced funny read. Ryza is with her friends Lent and Tao on the island where they live. They are always looking for some advensture because they are a little bored of their little island. When they encounter alchemist Empel and his friend Lila, all the adventures will start.

The art of this mangs is so gorgeous, i read this one on my Kobo colour and it was amazing! This read also made me very curious about the other Atelier manga's!

It was cute, but a little too short and too "hurried". But I guess it is a one-book adaptation of a game. So I guess it's a nice addition to a game for someone who already knows the whole plot, as you don't want to make an exact copy, cause that would be boring for those that already know the whole story. But still, I do think that it would have been better to, maybe, instead of trying to fit the whole plot into one book they could have just treated it as a prologue instead.

It did make me want to play the game tho.

I'd like to send my thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for providing a free pdf version of this manga in exchange for an honest review.

Having played the games, I obviously had to give this a spin. I found the art to be very cute but it felt a little.. cluttered. I wish it have been cleaner and given us more time to appreciate the charm of the individual characters instead of seeming to want to rush through something that is supposed to be very relaxing and slice of lifey.

That being said, the enjoyment I got out of this was because I was already familiar with the characters. I doubt someone new to the franchise would get as much out of it

Thanks Netgalley for this arc read!

This is a decent read for people who have played the game to quickly re-experience some of the fun moments of Ryza and the crew again, but the keyword is definitely quickly here. 😅 For people wanting to get a taste of Atelier Ryza's story, the pacing makes it hard to really understand what's going on. It is a good attempt on wanting to not cut out on certain plot points and subplots, but it can get really confusing for a person who knows nothing about this world and this cast. This absolutely would have benefited from being told in at least a few volumes than the single standalone. The art was fantastic though and it really did make me want to go back to play the game again!

Young Adult fantasy graphic novel with a naive yet strong-willed female lead. The story and plot are entertaining enough, paired well with the detailed and peppy artwork. It's an all-around fun storytelling with coming-of-age and friendship-themes. I highly recommend it to the fantasy graphic novel fans.

It includes a bit of fan service (fan service is when the artists sexualize characters), which is typical within this genre, but I like to make readers aware.

First I would like to thank NetGalley, the Author and Artist and the Publisher for this ARC

This quite the adventure.
It's fun and fast paced, yet you get enough world building and history about this certain world to get a general idea of the how's and what's.
But I must say, I still have questions. 🤷‍♀️
But apparently this is from a game??? So maybe I can get my answers there??? 🤷‍♀️

Anyway,

The characters are recognizable and loveable.
The art is gorgeous.

This was a fun and adventures read.

4/5! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you aren't familiar with the video game, the pace of this might be a struggle and make things confusing, as this is rushed, and doesn't give you much detail into the lives of our characters.

However, if you are familiar with the game, this will be a fun visit back into the world and adventures of Atelier Ryza.

I enjoyed reading this manga. It made me feel like I was playing one of my many RPG games. The characters were funny and relatable. I am glad that everyone learn to work together again and not work against them. If this were created into a game or a show, it would be something I would watch/play. It also gives me a little bit of a feeling like the Record of Lodoss War show that I love watching. I am eager to see where the next book will take everyone.

The whole story from the game is contained in this relatively short volume, and so a lot is cut. There would be some holes, but someone unfamiliar with the game could still enjoy the story. Unfortunately, three important aspects of the game are not present here: exploration, battle, and crafting. Ryza's world is a little limited due to this, which takes away from her growth as a person.

This manga was okay. Personally I found it a bit boring and the art had so many mistakes it made it a bit comical. The story is dull, but maybe a younger person would enjoy (although girls are sexualized as per usual). Ryza and her comrades go from disgraceful kids to “full fledged” adventurers (and flute player) practically overnight, so it is very fast paced.
