Quick Wit Prevails Over Deep Pockets

Rate this book
In this fifth volume of the popular That Bottom Step series, follow the Johnsons and their friends as they encounter
adversaries ranging from crooked politicians to would-be kidnappers to crafty terrorists (and even a few tricky corsages).

Now a United States senator, Gus Johnson may finally be in a position to achieve his years-long dream of enacting Congressional term limits. But first, he’ll have to deal with colleagues bent on blackmail, manufactured threats to his reputation, international crises that require his expertise, and—perhaps most challenging of all—three teenagers who are beginning to date, drive, and forge their own futures.

Of course, Gus has plenty of support at the Hideaway. When they aren’t dealing with domestic matters, Beth, Marsha, and Latifa are all successfully leading organizations dedicated to making the world a better place. While Marsha heads up efforts to research possible treatments for PTSD, Beth and Latifa are focused on identifying and neutralizing threats to
domestic and international safety.

Beth, in particular, is thrust into several high-stakes situations. After overseeing the rescue of schoolgirls taken hostage by terrorists, she receives an unexpected and rare honor. But soon, an old enemy—Ranar Copeda—resurfaces. This time, not only her life is at stake; Ranar won’t hesitate to threaten her loved ones in order to exact his revenge. As his plots reach from Leeds, England, to Cowan, North Carolina, the Johnsons must race against the clock to thwart this
international criminal once and for all.

Fortunately, they have plenty of allies, none stauncher than Agent Leppard. His particular brand of ruthless off-the-books investigation ensures that more than one situation is resolved satisfactorily. From personally dispatching terrorists to coordinating international surveillance, there seems to be nothing he can’t handle...but does that include matters of the heart?

One thing is for Despite threats, plots, intrigue, and loss, there is no shortage of love and laughter at the Hideaway. As readers follow this unique group of spies, statesmen, and wise-cracking friends, they’ll encounter more of Everett Durham’s signature blend of excitement, humor, and heart-warming observations on daily life.
