I was so excited when I heard there was going to be another Rod and Cane story! Liz Davenport is an awesome character- strong, confident, she knows what she needs.

I loved watching her explain her desires and needs to her new vanilla boyfriend, Grant. At least he seemed vanilla, at first. He took to spanking, like a duck to water. And boy, was it hot!

But what I loved most about this one, was the age facto. Liz is a middle aged – I loved that! It’s nice to see a 40 something character every once in a while. And in another fun twist; Grant was five years younger. So close enough, as to not be a cougar story. But having a younger man for a woman who wanted an older man, was definitely a brilliant twist.

I loved it!
It had a great, fast paced plot that kept me turning the pages long into the night.

It was also easily read as a standalone, thankfully, since it had been a few years since I had read the last Rod and Cane book.
Fantastic book! Well written! I can’t wait for the next one.

OMG!! I love Cara and her spanking stories and this one is brilliant!

Liz has opened a practice on her own after the death of her beloved husband. The last thing she is looking for is someone new, or at least that's what she thinks. She has missed the partnership and the calming effects of spanking. Maybe after her bid for a potion on the board at Rod and Cane, she will be able to find someone through the club. Although single men are far and few between, a girl can hope.

Grant is new to town. Just retiring from the Navy JAG and beating cancer, he's on a mission to start over and find his biological father. Although he's a go getter in his professional life, when it comes to his personal life, he's very timid. And there is this one woman that has caught his eye, but he just can't seem to make the first move.

As luck would have, fate decides to make it happen. Coffee is flying through the air directly towards Liz and Grant pulls her away before disaster hits. Thankful, Liz makes small talk with this tall drink of water of a man! Even in his running attire, Grant is striking and Liz is all tongue tied. (Not that I would blame her!) Grant asks her to have tea with him again and although she kind of agrees, she's not entirely certain she will. Luckily for Grant, he's got some supporters on his side in the form of Liz's friends.

Their first, sort of date, is great and Liz agrees to a full on date. Grant is thrilled because Liz is everything he's been looking for. Liz is completely attracted to Grant but she's afraid he may be a little too vanilla to give her what she most desperately needs.

As they continue to date, their chemistry is undeniable and as they take it to the next level, Grant shows that maybe he can be what Liz needs, as long as she's honest with him. Once she explains things, Grant is taken back a bit but life without this stunning woman is not something he is willing to let go of just yet.

This book has all the essential elements needed to keep the reader turning the pages. The relationship between Liz and Grant grow and, as with any relationship, there are ups and downs. The angst each must suffer only makes the reader grow more in love with each individual. I really enjoyed this story since it's couple are slightly older then the young twenty-something's we normally see. Well, done Cara!!

Although Reasonable Doubts is part of a series, each one can be easily read their own.

Part of series this is one that had slid under my radar but I have to say that I have now gone back and read the books that came before it. I know you can read it on its own but I have to say that having now finished the other books, I think if you have the chance you should try the series as a whole.

The book is Liz and Gavin’s story and it is one that caught my attention straight away, these were not kids, they were not college sweethearts finding their way against the odd, they we grownups with life experiences and knockbacks, that had not just jobs but careers that weighted heavy on their lives.

I mean one attorney in a relationship is probably one too many but when they are both in the profession, well shit just got even more complicated.

Liz is a partner in her firm and Gavin is ex force’s –JAG, now moving out of service into the big bad world of private law. Liz is alone having been widowed after over 20 years of marriage and now isn’t looking particularly for a romantic liaison.

But one thing you get when you least expect it, might just be what you have needed all along and at least when there is an older person or couple as the main characters in a lot less angst and I like that, I like the maturity that age brings to a relationship.

That is not to say that everything is plain sailing for them, they both have history and they both have things that they would prefer to keep hidden but what you wish for isn’t always what you get- life can be a bitch like that. But giving up their secrets gives them the opportunity to show that nothing can be too much if you are prepared to put in the effort. They worked through the issues and because of that they gave themselves the opportunity to be happy.

You need to be open minded on occasion while reading this because there is elements of discipline/spanking included in the story but it is not gratuitous and I think that it was well placed within the context of what is a well written, emotionally paced insight into love not only after experiencing loss but also when you are fighting against the expectations of those around you.

Wow! What an incredibly amazing story. I really loved the characters. Ms. Bristol does a fantastic job of creating likable real characters that you can relate too. I loved LIZ and Grant. They were the perfect combo. It was interesting how Ms. Bristol shows the real connection between two people in a DD relationship and how much it brings people together. One of my favorite scenes was when Grant says something like he wants to talk to her in a way she will understand and he spanks her. It calms them both down and they are able to think clearly again. This was a really good story for those of you who are beginners in a spanking story and I loved it!

if you already know the author then this is just another incredible story! I'm glad I have my own Rod and Cane membership card because after reading this story... i need to read them all and any further ones.

Fantastic job Ms. Bristol.

I can't believe I let a whole year go by before reading this latest installment in the Rod and Cane Society but, better late than never and, this story is definitely worth a read. Both main characters in the story are mature, admirable, and very likable people. Liz is not riddled with the immature impulses that are far too prevalent in previous R&CS heroines (excluding Stephanie from Body Politics). She is someone I could easily relate to and would love to have as a friend in real life.

Those qualities in the female protagonist set this installment apart from several previous books in the series, but the quality of Ms. Bristol's writing and story telling remain strong throughout the series. I enjoy the balance between story and sexy times in her books, and hope there are many more yet to come.

This is another great book from the Rod and Cane Society. When a young house cleaner is cleaning the R & C building, she sees a room that has a lot of the furniture for spanking and that is right after she meets Jordan, one of the board members (very sexy). Jordan finds Hannah checking out the spanking bench. Being already interested in her, Jordan feels that he should spank her and to also continue the relationship. The way these two characters interact and their personalities shine through, I felt almost like I knew them personally. Cara does such a good job of bring the story together and once again, adding to the members of the fantastic Rod and Cane Society books. Great Job!

I loved all the previous Rod and Cane books and I just finished reading Reasonable Doubts. It can be read as a standalone or with the previous books. I loved the fact that the main characters, Liz Davenport and Grant Davis are middled aged and they are well developed and both successful in their professions. The story line is excellent and believable and both are characters you immediately like. Since the overview gives more details I won't but will say that there is romance, some suspense, domestic discipline and a well written book.

Reasonable Doubts is the kind of story I love. The hero and heroine have chemistry that can't be denied. The hero fights for his heroine in page turning ways. Plus, there's yummy discovery in all the hot spanking action.

If you like your heroine's smart and your stories erotic. You have to read this one.

Cara Bristol has done it again. I love how how her words flow together. Reasonable Doubts is a tremendous addition to her Rod and Cane Society erotic romance stories.

I received an advanced copy in exchange for my honest and fair review.

I thought this was a good story about two lawyers discovering their kinks as they discover each other and fall in love. I liked that she was a bit older than he was and had a history of spanking her past relationship. The problems with the Rod and Cane Society seemed a bit too much but the conflict within the law office seemed right.

The Delight
Seeing a healthy DD relationship with past characters was interesting. Just how much the women craved their HoH to take them in control and spank their asses red. For people not into reading about the DD lifestyle, this might make you a little uncomfortable. Women are cherished, but their asses are owned.

I am not going to pretend that I understand domestic discipline. I will say though, to each their own and as long as no one is getting hurt, then go forth with what makes you happy. Domestic discipline in this series is defined between the couples. Usually there is a Head of the Household (HoH), also usually the male. In this setting, it is always the male. The Rod and Cane Society govern their members and provide support services to make the relationship a loving one.

Liz lived in a DD relationship for her entire marriage until Otis, her husband, dies from a heart attack while jogging. He was 20 years older than her, they had one child and he provided discipline when needed and maintenance spankings through out their marriage. A year later, Liz lacks the discipline she craves, but she also isn't ready to jump out into the dating world until she meets a stranger who saves her from scalding coffee.

Grant is two weeks on the job as a new lawyer in a local firm (oh and Liz is a lawyer too who resigned from this same firm). He is as vanilla as the ice cream he likes. But after beating cancer, he's ready to live life and find love. He is right away attracted to Liz, but senses she isn't ready for long term and he senses she is hiding something. When he playfully spanks her he is horrified with how red her ass gets. Raised to never hurt a woman, he wants to drop it and continue with the relationship.

So the story goes on with Liz breaking up with him and then Grant finding out about DD. He is cautious, but willing to try it for her sake. Liz doesn't want to "train" him and tries to break it off several times.

So this was a very short story that I read in one day. It can't go into all the nuances of a DD relationship that would satisfy me. I struggled with how Liz could be such a powerful woman but then turn everything over in the household. I guess there isn't much difference in a D/s relationship, but this seems more rigid. Liz loved to be spanked to be spanked, but no so much as a punishment. She also gives over life decisions. That doesn't mean she isn't consulted, she just doesn't get the final say in what happens.

Most of love scenes contained a spanking that ended with a BJ or sex. While it was erotic, it also felt like it was a little old fashioned. To say I wasn't turned on...well, I wasn't. I just could't enjoy what Grant and Liz had. And in the end I wanted to spank Liz for taking the control away that she wanted Grant to take. Topping from the bottom. Hell, I would have beaten her ass if she had given over the power and yanked it away with no explanation.

I enjoyed the look into a DD society, but I think I would need more information about DD to truly enjoy the dynamic of the relationship. Since DD isn't my thing, I probably won't be delving to much further into it. For people who like spanking in their story, this one is for you. For dominant women or even vanilla women...I would say pass.

3.5 stars out of 5
When this book came to my attention I wasn’t sure I wanted to read it. It is book five in a series I haven’t read. But, there were so many things in the blurb that piqued my interest, I decided to give it a try. Although it read okay as a stand-alone story, I can see the benefits of having read the earlier books. Like knowing the details of the other characters romances. They were all here. Also, I am sure there is some background to the Rod and Cane Society that would have been helpful in reading this story – like what HoH stood for. Finally at about 39% read the author clued me in, but until then I was a bit lost on that term. I was almost ready to goggle it when it was spelled out in the story. Otherwise, this read okay.

The featured characters – Liz Davenport and Grant Davis – were well developed and interesting. Both were attorneys, though they arrived at this place in their lives in different ways. These two are not young kids. They have mostly paid their dues. Liz had worked for the same firm, making partner even, for somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty years. She was a widow, having been married for 22 years. Grant has retired from JAG *sigh* (yes there were Harmon Rabb references) and was just now entering the private sector. I do like the more mature characters. They are more settled in life and have a clearer cut idea of what they want from said life.

However, life has a way of throwing curve balls. Lifestyles can and do affect the professional life. Both Liz and Grant have some skeletons in their respective closets. These skeletons make for some interesting dilemmas. I liked the way that Liz and Grant worked through them, eventually, in spite of outside forces trying to work against them.

There were a couple of secondary characters I just wanted to punch! One just kind of faded into the background because no one liked him. The other – well he turned out to be family. Doesn’t everyone have that one troublesome family member? Don’t have to like ‘em, but gotta love ‘em.

As may, or may not, be surmised from the series title, this story does involve discipline. The domestic kind. I, personally, am fascinated by the subject so enjoy reading this type of story. The author does a good job of portraying the subject, both the good and the bad side of it. I do warn you however, if you are not into spanking, do not read this book. If, however, you are like me, have an open mind and enjoy spice with your reading, this one isn’t bad.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t typically like to jump into a series this far along without reading the previous books, but I was assured that Reasonable Doubts could be read as a standalone, so I took a chance on it. Boy am I glad I did because I loved this book. While I may have known a bit more about Liz had I read the previous books, not doing so did not affect my enjoyment of this book at all. I never felt lost when previous incidents were mentioned – at least no more than you would when two of your friends are talking about a situation you weren’t a part of. In all actuality, Ms. Bristol does a great job of providing the pertinent details about past events so that I felt I had an adequate understanding of the events and how they affected Liz and Grant.

Liz is a successful attorney with her own practice. She has a great group of friends and enjoys her life. But as a widow, she misses the Domestic Discipline relationship she had with her husband and his firm hand when she needed it. While it’s been a couple of years since her husband passed, she’s hesitant to enter the dating scene because she needs a partner who is ready to take on the responsibilities of an HoH and not someone she has to train. And yet she finds herself drawn to a man who is clearly not a spanker. Against her better judgment, she agrees to go out with Grant and finds herself willing to help introduce him to the world of DD so that they can spend more time together. Hallelujah!

I loved the interactions and chemistry between Liz and Grant. The two definitely feed off of one another’s energy and attraction and they complement each other immensely. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Grant learn about DD and how his opinions regarding the lifestyle changed as his relationship with Liz progressed. His self-acknowledgement of his inner caveman tendencies proved to both amusing and sexy. Reasonable Doubts was a great book and while it was absolutely enjoyable as a standalone, I do plan to go back and read the earlier books in the series so that I can find out the stories from the motley crew of misfits that made up Liz’s girl posse.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I've read and enjoyed other Cara Bristol books, and thought I'd give "Reasonable Doubts" a try.

Liz Davenport is gradually recovering from the grief of her husband's death when she meets Grant Davis. She's not looking for a new relationship, but she's attracted to Grant and thinks perhaps it's time to get back to the business of living. Complicating matters is Liz's need for Domestic Discipline -- her husband provided firm but loving direction that helped Liz cope with the stresses in her life. As Liz and Grant's relationship develops, so does Liz's need to tell him what she needs, but she's afraid of his reaction, so she decides it's better to just cut Grant loose than risk his rejection. But Grant's determined to be and do whatever Liz needs, so he agrees to try DD.

While I'm not generally a fan of DD stories, this one was different enough for me to read. Grant has no experience with DD, so it's interesting to read along as he tries to reconcile the societal taboo on striking a woman with Liz's need for him to discipline her. Initially he just can't figure out why Liz, a smart and accomplished professional, would seek this type of relationship and has to push himself to administer her 'punishment.' And he struggles with it: "'Hit you with a paddle?' He looked aghast now. She said spank, and he heard hit. Liz sighed, frustrated..." Eventually Grant comes to accept Liz's kink and embraces the new dynamic in their relationship.

It's an interesting and different slant from the usual spanking stories, so 3 stars.

Another great addition to the Rod and Cane Society series! Liz was married to a disciplinarian and now that she is a widow and ready to date, she is looking for a man who can provide the discipline and structure she needs to feel loved and secure. Grant is the first man she has been attracted to since her husband's passing and he has never spanked a woman! Grant also works for her old law firm and that can cause many problems in their developing relationship. I was completely enthralled by the dynamics of this wonderful couple and found myself eagerly turning the pages to see how Grant could slowly develop the mindset to be the disciplinarian that Liz wants and needs. I loved that both characters are strong and confident in themselves and their lives. I highly recommend this book to lovers of domestic discipline romances that enjoy a wonderful blend of romance, humor, drama and sexual chemistry

Second-chance love

I loved this book. As a middle-aged woman in a long-term relationship myself, I can’t even IMAGINE starting over and loving someone new. When Liz Davenport finds herself a widow after twenty-two years of marriage, she has to do just that. Of course it proves harder than anything she’d ever done before including making and then losing a partnership in a prestigious law firm due to her ‘lifestyle’.

Grant Davis is strong, self-assured and struggling to overcome issues of his own in a new job as well as a new town.

Bristol makes their lives and relationship deliciously complicated as usual. I have to keep telling myself there WILL be a happy ending despite her machinations to the contrary. I’m just glad she’s not pulling my strings.

Great characters. Great story. Great standalone book. I can’t wait for the next one.

Great Series!

This was a poignant story about love and loss & most of all second chances you don't often get in life. My favorite thing about Cara Bristol's writing is how real & believable her characters are. This story touched me deeply cause the characters are older, close to my age. Highly recommend this one.
