This digital boxed set includes four full length paranormal romances by Claire
Once Upon a Kiss The Last Highlander The Moonstone and Love Potion #9
The Last Highlander and The Moonstone are time travel romances, while Once Upon a Kiss and Love Potion #9 are paranormal romances in which the passage of time is key to the story. Since the hero and heroine are from different times in all four books and the boxed set needed a title, it became the Time Travel Romance Boxed Set. Once Upon a Kiss, The Last Highlander and The Moonstone were all finalists for the Best Paranormal, Fantasy or Time Travel Romance of the Colorado Romance Writers' Award of Excellence--Love Potion #9 won that award, and was a Romantic Times Top Pick, as well.
These romances were originally published under Claire's pseudonym, Claire Cross.
New York Times bestselling author Claire Delacroix sold her first book in 1992, an historical romance called ROMANCE OF THE ROSE. Since then, she has published over sixty romance novels and novellas, and has also been published under the names Claire Cross and Deborah Cooke. She has an honours degree in history, with a focus on medieval studies. She is an avid reader of medieval vernacular literature, fairy tales and fantasy novels.
In October and November 2009, she was the writer in residence for the Toronto Public Library, the first time that the library has hosted a residency focused on the romance genre.
I read each of the stories in Time Travel Romances Boxed Set by Claire Delacroix separately, not realizing that they were in a box set. Each one read well as a stand-alone; they do not seem to be connected stories. It is nice that they are all together to read one right after another. Here are my reviews on each that are within the set: I found Once Upon a Kiss to be intriguing and humorous with all of Beauty’s (Aurelia) misconceptions and denial of the changing of time as she has woken up in the present time period. Customs, roles in life and societal beliefs would be so very different that Aurelia’s confusion and out of date actions could be believable and plausible. I did wish she had understood sooner that Baird was not the villain in this story. I especially appreciated the author’s note at the end. The incorporating of history in fiction is always a tricky thing but this is well written and enjoyable to boot. Fairytale retells are in abundance but I don’t believe I have ever seen another that takes this premise or perspective. The Last Highlander is a wonderful twist on time traveling. Instead of going into the past the hero comes to 1998. It was intriguing to see how history had been changed by Alasdair’s disappearance from 1314. I found the characters, Morgan and Alasdair, to be a delightful contrast as they sort through what has happened. She is more dreamer and he is more the doer, still they complete each other. The plot flows smoothly never dragging. The ending is unexpected, which I liked. Overall, an enjoyable time travel story. The Moonstone is an interesting time travel romance. It is very unique that more than one character actually travels to the future. I don’t think I have ever read how the hero follows the heroine. Of course, he is not following her because of love but for justice. I found this to be a fun, flirty type of time travel read even though the hero is a court appointed warden deliverer for the executioner. Somehow Claire Delacroix aka Deborah Cooke managed to keep this story from veering too far into the dark. A wonderful, lighthearted read with its hint of magic along with a hero who needs saving much more than the heroine. Then The Moonstone is my favorite of the four. I was expecting a book more like the first three in this series that dealt with time travel. Love Potion #9 is a different sort of book from those. Instead the heroine, Lilith, has found a way to become immortal and wait for love to return from the dead. Lilith and Mitch were likeable characters when they are together they really light the pages up. There are a couple of other characters who provide a bit of comic relief that was very entertaining. The plot flows for the most part though it tended to get bogged down with the tarot cards and spells. However, that did not happen often and someone who was interested in this type of activity would really enjoy how it all plays out better than me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this time travel boxed set by Claire Delacroix. I most like that each book progresses along a time line from the ninth century to the twentieth century. Once Upon a Kiss begins in 800 AD with the settling of Scotland by the Vikings. The book continues in the same setting only in the year 1999.The Last Highlander begins during the time of Robert the Bruce. The story jumps to present day and goes back to the early fourteenth century. The Moonstone takes begins in a small shire in Northern England during the late fourteenth century and ends in present day British Columbia. The last book in the series, Love Potion #9 begins in the early fifteenth century and concludes in present day Toronto. Each brought to light a new facet of history with the conflicts of true soul mates falling in love.
Sorry about making words up, but there really isn't any way of expressing just how great these stories are. These stories are magical and make even the most stoic among us long to be transported to a different time or place to find that perfect love. The author has an uncanny talent to make the reader feel part of the story and you get invested so quickly, I'm warning you not to start reading if you need to get work down as you will be unable to put this anthology down!
