1953 New Brunswick, Canada. A young boy is left in the care of his unreliable uncle. Set in a backwood village along the Miramichi River, Downriver presents a time of change and convergence: a boy growing up, a man growing old, rural communities entering the modern age. And though the boy and his uncle couldn’t be more different, the relationship they forge could not be stronger.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a slow burn quality to it, reflective of its quaint rural mid-century setting. But once all the pieces started coming together, I was quite hooked, touched by the uncle-nephew relationship, their river quest and the bond they formed.
