A very good story that helps explain some of the background of Dreg City. It's a fun story on it's own, but even better in conjunction with the rest of Meding's terrific series. If you haven't read it by book 4, I'd recommend it, and I'd definitely recommend taking a few minutes to read it before book 5 (which you can buy in as an ebook from all of the major online retailers - Kindle, Smashwords, nook, Kobo - for only $4, a great deal for as high quality a book as she's ever put out by the way) because the background from this story comes into the plot of the book quite a bit. Readers who haven't read this story won't be lost, but if you have, it'll be a richer experience. And it's free, so why not take a few minutes and figure out a bit more of how the Pride works and why some of Evy's fellow hunters are so prickly all of the time. http://paranormal.suvudu.com/2009/11/...

I liked that this this one you get more history of some of the characters that we met later in the series. I found myself feeling sorry for Tybalt, was glad that Astrid apologized to him for what she did.

The Plot: A Triad hunter, Tybalt, was raised in a shapeshifter clan but was forced to leave them five years ago after falling in love with a shifter female who was promised to someone else. Now a member of the clan named Marcus is back to ask for his help. The Alpha is terminally ill and his leadership is being challenged. His son can fight the challenge for him but he has mysteriously disapeared. Marcus needs Tybalt's help and Triad connections to track him down to help save the leadership of the pack.

This is the second prequel short story in Meding's Dreg City series. In this story Meding focuses on a common UF creature - the shapeshifter - and puts her own spin on it. We are introduced to the Felia, who are feline shapeshifters. In the Dreg City world being a shapeshifter has many drawbacks. They age more quickly that humans and live an average of only forty years. They often die of diseases that are curable among humans as human medicine does not work on Felia physiology. I really liked this twist on the usual mythology of shapeshifters and it is something I have never seen anywhere else.

I liked the way Tybalt and his companions went about tracking down the Alpha's son. It was quick and quite brutal which was compelling to read. Meding packed a lot of back-story into these few pages and introduced an interesting plot and set of characters which makes this a really good short story.

Another great, quick read that gives interesting background info on several characters from the Dreg City series who don't usually get to take center stage - in this case Tybalt, Marcus and Astrid - in a free prequel story no fan of the series should miss.
