um....hm... debating on 3 or 3.5....

Song Choice: "Train Song" by Fesist & Ben Gibbard, and "Precious" by Depeche Mode

First thoughts: UM. hmmm. Odd because when i first started this book i really liked it, i was really excited about it, the concept was interesting and really intriguing, the main man Angus got me really excited cause he was all types of Alpha male, and tall, dark and handsome to boot! I wasn't overly annoyed or excited about the main girl: Rebecca but i will go more in depth in characters. Well alright so for last first thoughts i got this for free, and as a shorter "novel" i don't want to say novella but yeah i will go there, it was fast paced, especially at the end.

Thoughts on Plot: The summary made it sound really action-y and fun, and yeah, I was all like hell yeah! But....well we got about 60% when the real action started, and it didn't last long, it happened really fast, and was resolved even quicker. I was really intrigued by the idea of the "vampires" in this book and i dare even say that i don't see this as a paranormal as i do a scifi, the vampirism was explained by science really, which was super super interesting and this was one of the parts about the book i ADORED! it was super awesome, not only was the reason explain: instead of blood giving them life or anything like that it was the iron in the blood, cool right? so they don't really need the blood just iron (get that gif joke yet? yeahhhh) anyways so super cool, and a whole lot of other stuff was explained again awesome. Unfortunately.... that last half the book, I felt that it could have been prolonged and it could have been expanded on. there is so much i want comment on that i can't because its spoilers... i will say this though what the heck? Talk about insta-love. holy god....that relationship really grew out of nothing...well i mean it did a little but at the same time they've known each other for three days...okay i will relent on some of that, but still it was too fast for my likings. soo i need to talk about those spoilers sorry these are super spoilers please don't look unless you have read the book or you really just don't care

Characters:

Rebecca: Um i guess in a way i sort of indifferent about her. i didn't really hate her, and i didn't really love her either. Though one of my bigger issues with this book was the character inconsistencies, Rebecca had a bit of that, in the very first chapter she seemed very skeptical about this vampire business but then when she was told what she is...she accepts it pretty levelheaded as well, i mean she has a good cry for about two seconds then realizes welp that is how things are. and that would be all fine and dandy but that first chapter stuck with me and i was like...shouldn't you be more like no. and i get this situation is explained scientifically and what nots but still....and then when again at the end i can't talk about that. i don't i wish that there was i don't know more to her if that makes sense....

Angus: NOW HIM I LIKED. i liked a lot. i like the Alpha males and he was coming off as a very Alpha male type in the beginning and while this book doesn't have any sex scenes it doesn't have the MC guy shy away from male thoughts, and that i also loved. i found him a little unbelievable at times but mostly i liked him. he had a bit of a tempter and i liked that he was true to his nature, he called it like it was. he didn't shy away from the idea of liking to kill, or use violence but he did in a way that made him the good guy, Dexter? yeah. i did like him honestly.

um i HAVE to talk about Rebecca's mother: i am confused maybe i am wrong but i thought at the very beginning of the book Rebecca mentions that her mother is a worry-wart to the extreme like if you sneeze she is calling the doctor she is an vulture circling if you show any sign of discomfort. but that was not the mother in this book. she was not only inconsistent but WOW, i mean i was sitting there sort of thinking...you're kind of a bad mom... her daughter gets hits by a car and you take your sweet time getting home, she didn't even notice when Rebecca got her cast off and started wearing a brace, yes this is suppose to be the mother that is very cautious and always concerned for her kids. Not to mention she just lets her kids hang out with the new neighbor none of them know anything about. seriously the mom big problem. and i know at the end Rebecca and her brother...Mark....? say how they misjudged their mother but how can you misjudge your mother for 17/14 year? of your life... i don't understand.

The ending... um well not really cliffhanger-y but problems still need to be solved. am i going to go on with the series? i don't know maybe. i will think about it, mostly i want to know what will happen but i just don't know honestly.

you can check out about how i feel about other books all on my blog i am not going to be witty or funny cause i have to work in the morning and its late and i have a headache. sorry! know that i am not forcing you though: http://theviolethourbookreviews.wordp...

“The Iron in Blood” has a different take on vampires - they are very few in number, do drink blood from time to time, but it is iron that they need. And, in these times, there are iron tablets that do quite nicely.
Within limits the more iron they consume, the stronger they get – too much and it's killing time!
Brothers Fergus, Marcus and Angus don't like the term vampire as, despite having superior strength, healing ability, some mind reading ability and expanded lifespans, they don't have fangs, daylight doesn't bother them, ditto with garlic, stakes and holy water.
Rebecca, 17, has an accident and ends up in hospital where her blood is taken - it's not long before the brothers realise she is one of them, the first they have found in decades.
But, as a vegan, she has never experienced the iron rush which is not a good thing – she needs to be brought into the fold.
It's an interesting read which is let down by awkward writing and a plot that seems rushed. In addition, the instalove between Angus and Rebecca just didn't work for me.
I'll probably read further in the series but not immediately.
2.5 Stars, raised to 3 Stars.

I really liked this series when I was 13 or 14 years old and I decided to check it out again. This just goes to show that someone's taste can change. Long ago I would've rated this a 3.5 or a 4, but now I'm unsure if I should rate this a 2.5 or 3. I decided on 3 since little me liked it so much. I just couldn't stop cringing now. Maybe because I'm 20? I don't know. Btw: Don't get me wrong. It's not terrible. It's not bad enough to make me stop reading. I'm still going to read the other two books in the series. I remember liking the last one the most.

3 1/2 stars! This was a fun story that had a little of a "Twilight" feel to it, but with a twist. I liked the different mythology of vampires. There was no stereotypical blood sucking going on or fangs involved, which was refreshing. Rebecca is a seventeen yr old who has no idea she's a vampire and a coven that consists of three brothers (Angus, Marcus and Fergus) who have been searching for more of their kind for many years. After a hit and run, Rebecca's abnormal blood sample alerted the brothers to her existence. Angus was sent to watch over her and slowly integrate her into her new life as a vampire, since she was showing signs of transitioning. IMO, Rebecca was a little too accepting of her vampirism. Now I hate when there are chapters upon chapters of, "It can't be/I don't believe it", because that becomes annoying, so her acceptance isn't necessarily a bad thing. I also couldn't pin down what the heck she looked like. All that was described was her blonde hair. There was insta love after one kiss and two days of knowing each other, but the story engaged me and I really enjoyed it. Angus stood out for me. He was lethal, yet gentle and very caring and Rebecca surprised me with a little ass kicking. I also fell in love with Rebecca's little brother, Mark. He was your typical pain in the butt brother, but not in an irritating way. He loves Rebecca and it was comical how he made fun of her vampirism. I think I would have rated this 4 stars, but there were some unnecessary scenes that could have been left out of the book and some editing was needed. Other than than that, this was a pretty good start to this series and I'll definitely read on.

Quick pace and clever structure in this vampire adventure

The first in the Iron series by Jenny Doe, The Iron in Blood introduces us to main characters Angus and Rebecca, and their families. At first leading separate lives, the characters are well drawn by Doe and her choice to gradually blend their storylines with short sections labeled Angus and Rebecca within each chapter is a clever one that really works with this particular plot. As the action hots up, with Rebecca quickly having to become integrated into the vampire world and the pair realizing their feelings for one another, these sections read like parts of a testimony from a police report, giving pace and energy to the prose.

However, because these perspectives cover the same action, sometimes Doe has a tendency to reiterate information a little too much. This is a difficult balance to strike, but I’d recommend attempting to cut some of the repetition, especially of the more mundane details of the plot and focus on enhancing in each section what is lacking in the other character’s section, like thoughts, feelings and intentions. It is at these more emotional moments that the multiple narrative structure is at its most successful...

4.5

Could have been five stars but there were a few typos and it was short. I think it should have been book one and two into one book would have made Morse Spence to me. This was a very fast paced book though and I did like that. Also exciting and interesting. I liked the concept of how or why people are vampires. It actually makes sense, at least to me, but then I'm not a doctor so it may not even be possible but it sounds good! Lol The only thing that some people may have a problem with is how everyone goes with it so easily. Her falling in love and be living him so easily and all but then she is a bit different than other people and hey, young girls do fall in love pretty quick, lol. No really they do! So to me some of it is feasible, it in the next book well see how her mom goes along with it all. Not much she can do if the girl is 18 though. I like this story a lot for several reason even if everything is happening pretty fast and people are going along with things seemingly easy, when in real life e I doubt they really would, but hey it's fiction and its fun so I'm going with it. The author does need to get an editor or a better editor though. There were a lot of typos but enough that I caught them.

Rebecca Harding is a normal seventeen year old girl, or so she believes until one day she's knocked over by a hit and run driver and her life begins to change. Three brothers, Angus, Marcus and Fergus have been looking for others like them for decades, Marcus is a genius and a geneticist, Fergus a computer whizz and between them they've found a way to isolate the group of genes which separates them from humans and Rebecca's blood tests in hospital give out the long awaited match. Angus who by chance is already close by is sent to help Rebecca come to terms with the changes and help her adjust.

I enjoyed this book, it was a little different than most vampire books. It's isn't without it's faults, in places it's too slow yet seems to jump in others, It didn't flow as well as it should in my opinion but I've just downloaded the sample of the next one The Vampire Gene so I'll see how that goes.

I downloaded this book because it was free and am so glad I did. Doe's writing is witty and entertaining. I really enjoyed Mark and his sense of humor and Fergus and Marcus had me laughing out loud. My only hang up was the relationship of Angus and Rebecca being in love almost before they met, but I enjoyed the story so much that it did not deter me. I had the next book lined up before I finished the first and I love it when a book inspires that reaction. All in all, its a great read if you like romance, humor and a little action.

This was a good read. My huge pet peeve with these types of self published books is often the authors seem to feel like they have to trick the reader into buying their books. I will buy the sequel if you write a good book! If you write one book and chop it into three parts so you can hook the reader with a few chapters and then charge them for the rest it pisses me off! I got Patrick Carr's first book for free. I then paid $9.99 each for books 2 and 3 because he is a great writer and those were good books! You don't need to trick me; you just need to write a good book!

This book had a great view on vampires. However, the writing was poor. There were too many discrepancies in it. Such as, a kitten with a broken pelvis is suddenly leaping the day after being at the vet. Despite this silliness, the book was good enough for me to read the trilogy. Sadly, it could have been amazing if the author hadn't written it as if she had a great idea and then half-assed it. :(

I found this a fresh new take on vampires :) I loved the characters and the quick paced plot! I was drawn in quickly and was really glad it was a series as there were loads of unanswered questions at the end. I couldn't wait to start the second book :)

I liked some of the characters and enjoyed the storyline. The romance part was to quick to soon for me. The female character had strength which I did like. The mother character seemed to relaxed through high stressful situations. All in all I would buy the next book to see what happens with jack.

This was another one of those free Kindle vampire books I downloaded about a year or so ago and just finished reading and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Now I have downloaded (and paid) for Books 2 and 3, looking forward to them. A fresh take on vampires.

I was really suprised with this book. The summary gives impresion that it'll be absurd story, with no plot whatsoever.
The book turned out to be very cool, well-written, without emotional divagations, inner dilemmas and inner suffering as with young Werther.
I think I'll check the next parts out.
