I'd have no problem with this book had it been made just a romance flick instead of trying to have a deeper storyline. But the worst part about it, aside from the plot, was the mc, Katie. There's one thing in particular that really made me dislike her as the heroine: spoiler!! When she meets Toby (before she finds out he's an angel), she isn't affected at all by the fact that he's a little boy who thinks she's his mom. She yells about how he isn't her child and pushes him away without caring how such a young boy would feel. I couldn't really like her after that.
I remember reading this years ago and enjoying, but I have no idea why! I really struggled to finish this, and there was more than one character that I wanted to kick.
I skim read after I while, but not enough to escape seeing the heroine abused and beaten.
Hmmmmm this was a really hard book to rate. The first 60% of the book I found myself wanting to put it down and give up. Barely anything got explained properly and I got sick of Katie being a hysterical mess. It also takes ages for Katie and Rhyn to even meet, and when they do he's some rabid beast who torments her through prison cell bars even after she's basically had her throat torn out by his sadistic brother. His other brother Kris also annoyed me to no end, he was such an ass.
But...the last 40% the story become a whole lot better. Rhyn opens up a little and mostly stops being a psychotic killer, Katie calms down alot compared to the start of the book and they seemed to be getting along.
I would have given the last 1/4 of book a 3.5 Stars and the beginning a 1 Star so overall I tried to even it out with a 2.5 Star Rating. The ending does have me intrigued to read the second book but I think I'll take a break from all the drama and put it on my TBR pile for a few weeks.
This is the first book I've read by Lizzy Ford, I must say I really enjoyed her writing and this series has left me wanting to go read all of her books.
I will admit and many have said the first part of the book is abit slow and wordy if that makes sense, I even wanted to put it down a few times, but don't do that.....once you get past the first few chapters it flows extremely well.
We meet Katie who is having a day from hell, you know when you have those days you just wished you stayed in bed. Well Katie runs into problems every where she turns.
Katie's character is great and I loved how determined and witty she is. When she finds herself in prison (in hell) we are introduced to Rhyn, and finds out she is his mate. Rhyn is from an Ancient family and like her the black sheep in his family. Can they work together, can she trust him? Will they get the revenge they both desire.
This is a must read, I love Lizzy's writing, I am off to read Katie's Hope (Rhyn Trilogy, #2).
I recommend this book to anyone who is reading my review.
I love books that make you keep reading no matter how tried you are. Katie’s Hellion kept me up late into the night absorbing the pages as fast as I could. I can’t even begin to count how many times I thought, just one more page, and before I knew it, it was 1:00 in the morning and the book was finished.
Katie’s Hellion left me pleasantly exhausted. I absolutely loved everything about this book. Katie was a bit of a drunk and had a hard go at life, but in no time she found herself wishing for her old crappy life back. She wakes up one morning to find herself with a child she doesn’t remember having, and sucked into a world she never knew existed. Before long she ends up in Hell—literally—locked up beside Rhyn, her immortal mate.
After busting Rhyn out of Hell, Katie does everything she can to escape his grasp. He’s not the most pleasant creature to be around. She soon finds that the man that drives her crazy may just be the better evil to side with. With a war brewing and a dangerous mate stalking her every move, Katie is certain that one or the other will lead to her death. Can she tame the wild Rhyn? Will she survive this new world? Read Katie’s Hellion to find out.
Katie is a kickass heroine. Even though she drank too much, and relied on drugs to keep her sane, she was spunky and had a good head on her shoulders. She stood up for herself, and even when she was sure she couldn’t win the battles, she faced each one with her head held high.
Ford’s writing is near flawless. She draws you in and keeps you wanting more. Her description and world building was amazing. Other than a few typos and inconsistencies (which I hardly noticed because the story was so awesome) the pages flowed wonderfully.
What else … Oh … I love Rhyn. He’s completely flawed and absolutely prefect. I loved his snark and his strength, and I loved watching him grow as the book progressed. He was the perfect jackass. At this point I would be happy to read novel after novel as long as Rhyn is in them.
Katie’s Hellion is definitely a re-read kind of book. If you like kickass heroines, flawed heroes, and paranormal hotties, then you need to read this book.
I couldn't put this book down. It was remarkably good. In fact, I haven't read anything by Lizzy Ford before but I'm ready to throw myself wholeheartedly into her older books to see what else she can come up with.
I liked the mythology created - seven immortal brothers who should be the defenders of humanity. One has aligned himself with the Dark One and one has been imprisoned as his his brother's plaything for hundreds of thousands of years. Tortured and kept in hellish confinement, Rhyn has practically given up any hope of breaking free until one of Death's Assassins asks him to protect a woman who will soon fall into his brother's wicked grasp. As soon as Rhyn scents her blood he knows that she's his destined mate. However, in no way does this make him cuddly. His years of imprisonment have left him with no social skills and he's appalled that the woman who's destined to be his is a mere human. Only it turns out she's a little more than human. Her blood gives her immunity to some of the powers of the Immortals.
I know! Sounds awesome, doesn't it? And there's more. MORE! There's a baby angel and tension amongst the brothers and Rhyn is all feral and can hardly control his power and there's every possibility that he could end up destroying all of humanity. I mean... *swoon* I was upset when I finished the book and I found out that book 2 isn't out yet. I was simply enthralled by the story, by the characters, by the ideas that spilled forth.
It's a freebie through Goodreads and Smashwords at the moment. I highly recommend this fun and intriguing story. Now I'm off to see what other books by Lizzy Ford I can get my hands on.
At the start of this book I was slightly confused. Probably, because I was recovering from a cold :) Wow, once I got into this book I couldn't put it down. What an amazing mind Lizzy Ford has. The characters came to life off the pages, and I wanted to know all about them. I really loved the character Katie, and Rhyn was amazing. I do wish we could have seen more of Toby the five year old he's very interesting. When I got to the last page my first thought was I need to get the next book to find out what happens! It's been awhile since I have been this excited for a series. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the next book.
Well this was an okay start. I'm still interested in read more. I found it hard to get the relationship as it seems quite abusive at the moment. Love the fact that its her blood that attracts all the crazies. It'll be interesting to see if the characters soften towards each other.
The Plot - War, killing, kids and others types of hell. LoL
The Characters- Rhyn is a half breed that is super-duper powerful. He is dark, strong and extremely uncontrollable. Now, that’s what I call a great catch. Prrrrrrr,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Katie is a human, a kick ass human with the capacity of making me laugh my ass off in the darkest situations. Ok, I have a strange and twisted sense of humor, but come on, the girl is having the worst day of her life in such a funny way. I can’t help my grin while reading her discovering she has a 5yo child that she can’t remember having. How can you keep a straight face reading this?
Ok, ok, Katie, I’m sorry for laughing of your misery. But is for a good cause and you get to meet this super hot ,,, Oh, shit, I was not supposed to say this. Forget I told you this. Oh,what am I doing? Katie is just a character, she is not real. Excuse me, things are getting confused and I need to take my happy pills.
The Writing - Jump!
Yep, we have lots of jumping around in this book. In one minute you are in death bringers’ head and then,,, JUMP! You fall into Rhyn’s head. He is messed up and when you start to get comfortable ,,, JUMP! Right into Katie’s head. It took me a while to get used to the jumping around, but the good part is that you get to know what all of them are thinking and all the inside scoops. LoL I like her writing. One thing I can say is that I was never bored. LoL
Considerations - What makes me like a book? Sometimes I ask myself this question while I’m reading. What makes this book worth being read? Reviews and ratings are something personal and hard to do, so I’ll be careful. What makes this book worthy of my rating and babbling? The human perspective in it. No, I don’t mean human as human people. I mean human as feelings and all that touchy stuff. Rhyn is in hell in the beginning of the book and that scene touched me. I’ve watched many war movies and documentaries to say that some of what he was feeling I already see. What I’m about to say is kind of a spoiler, so if you haven’t read the book yet, maybe you shouldn’t read this. We see Rhyn on his cell and he’s been there for a while. He is in pain and tired. In hell he is in constant torment and changing shapes constantly to the point of not knowing what he is anymore. Flesh, bones, nothing . He can’t feel or say what shape he is. War prisoners often talk that while being captivated by the enemy, they were tortured physically and mentally to the point of hallucinations. They lose shape and reason just like Rhyn. Hell in this book is showed in a tangible aspect. Mental games, prisons in hell and kids always get revolutionaries thinking into my head. LoL I will certainly read the next book on this series.
This reading is part of the following reading challenges:
2.5 I probably should round this up to 3 stars but truthfully I am not feeling that generous after I reached the 'ending'. I might go back and edit this review later because I am still steaming off my reading experience. This is a free download off goodreads. I decided to take a chance on the story/author. To say that I did not enjoy the story is the best most polite thing that I can do right now. I could pick this story a part, piece by piece and yet that would be no good to anyone. SO let me just say what worked for me, (what I liked) and what did not work for me. What worked for me: I liked the world within the book. The levels of demons, ancients and human interactions. What did not work for me: As I say in my reading updates, this story is riddled with missing words, missing elements in the action, missing parts to conversations, and so many inconsistencies where the character would say something in the beginning of the story only to contradict that as the story progresses. While each character is unique and original there are so many personality flaws to these characters that even at the end of the story I did not like any of them. They all were un-relatable, unrealistic, and down right obnoxious. If I can not get myself to care about (bond with) the characters then the story falls flat. Next the abuse and violence in this story is unacceptable to a reasonable individual. This book needs to be tagged with abuse, dubious consent, and the BDSM Theme of Domination/submission. I see that two GR members tagged this Young Adult. This is Not young adult genre material. The romance is not a romance. It is being beaten and raped (by one of the brothers), feed upon by most all of the brothers (vampire), humiliated by all the brothers, intimidated, threatened with torture and death by all of the brothers, yet somehow the main character feels that the least offending brother and her are true mates and that she loves him? Wow talk about disturbing. And Finally, this story has ZERO plot resolution. It just ends. You know there is (will be) more to the story because nothing and I mean nothing gets resolved. But to use an old quote "Frankly my dear, I do not give a damn." Let this nonsense continue on without me. So do I recommend this book. NO! Skip this download, unless of course your into this kind of thing. But you have been warned by this reviewer who found this to be disturbing.
When I started this book I was already in love with Lizzy Ford’s Witchling Trilogy and I would have never imagined there was a possibility Rhyn might take its place as my favourite LF book series. I read the book in two days, something I rarely manage to do, since I am in the final year of highschool and have a lot of studying to do.
I have been reading a lot of Paranormal Romance lately, from vampire to witches novels, and it is very refreshing when I discover books with supernatural creatures so unique as the Rhyn Trilogy has. We have demons, angels and Immortals – blood eating beings similar to angels, protectors of the human race.
My favourite aspect about this book is how real the characters seem to be. They are easy to love, and make you really care about what happens to them, especially Katie and Rhyn. I especially liked how their relationship develops throughout the book, from hate to acceptance, and finally love.
Katie is a very strong character. It’s incredible how she manages to keep her sanity when the world as she knew it is crushing down. It’s really hard for me not to give you spoilers on what happens to her, but I think you will love her character as much as I did. Rhyn, on the other hand, was not to my liking at first. But after reading about his background, it all made sense and I actually found myself cheering up for him. It’s one of those characters that you sometimes want to punch at some point, but you can’t help loving him at the same time.
I am already used to Lizzy Ford’s writing style and I must say I love it. You can tell she has writing in her blood, as her books keep you glued to them. Full of incredible action, amazing characters and unique stories – what’s not to like? A must-read for any Paranormal Romance fan.
“Trust me.” God help me, I think I do. As if hearing her thought, he gave a slow smile.
Demon's and vampires are hunting Katie. Her blood has some special properties which makes them immune to supernatural powers. Things are not looking good for her, and when she is claimed as the mate of the worst of all demons, Rhyn, things seem to have gone from bad to worse. But Rhyn might just be the only one who can protect her.
Katie's Hellion is something of a jigsaw puzzle. Almost until the end I didn't really know what was going on. Lizzy Ford doesn't insult or patronise her readers, she doesn't give "for dummies" explanations. It's one of the things I enjoyed most about this book. I loved that even after I stopped reading, I was still thinking about what was going on.
She sighed, content to rest atop him. His confidence was the only rock to stand on in this forsaken world of immortals. She didn't know if she could trust him, or Kris, or anyone yet, but she could at least know the man beneath her was the only man she was safe from. It wasn't much but it was more than she had in what felt like a lifetime. He'd protected her and made it clear anything that got near her would die a nasty death.
~
"Really, how long are you staying, and what do you want?" Katie hissed as they waited in the hall. "No rush. We're immortal." "I told Gabriel I didn't want you around. You couldn't give me some peace?" "I'm your mate," Rhyn grated. "I'm supposed to…take care of you." At the effort he put in the difficult words, she looked up at him, her clear blue eyes vexed. He hated how pale she was, hated the scars on her body. He admired her strength but knew everyone had a breaking point. Hell had taught him this, if nothing else. He wasn't sure what he felt toward the woman, but he didn't want her to come to harm, and he didn't want her out of his sight.
2012 2015 2019 (3rd re-read) Alright, first off, when I got my kindle and actually started reading again in earnest, Lizzy Ford was one of the first authors I stumbled across. I devoured (what was released of) this series and a quite a few others. I still love like 90% of what I read of hers. But Rhyn…he has always been one of my absolute, all-time favorites. I just love Rhyn. It's been awhile since I've read this, but I remembered a lot of it, and what I didn't remember was like a surprise so it was fun to re-read. Though I have to say, if I didn't know where this was headed, or if I was reading this for the first time now with a few hundred books under my belt, as opposed to several years ago when I originally read it…my opinion might have been different. I don't tolerate YA nearly as well now as I did then. And I don't think I would necessarily consider this to be YA, but Katie is only 18. Also, while she doesn't necessarily act immature, I'm not sure how much I'd like Katie if I didn't already kinda know how she turns out. I wouldn't call her stupid, but she does make some dumb choices. Though not all of it is her fault, she really does attract trouble like flies to shit. It takes awhile for her and Rhyn to really even come together, and it's never easy. I actually like that about this book, about this series, Katie and Rhyn are mates but it's definitely a rocky relationship. She calls him on his shit and makes him prove himself, and he begrudgingly comes to respect and care for her. I also forgot how much of a dick Kris is in this book. And how much I absolutely despise Katie's sister, Hannah. I really hate Hannah, so goddamn condescending. I love Gabriel, and Toby, and Ully, too. Gabriel has his own story down the road, and I think that's where I stopped…I remember it taking a weird turn and I needed to take a break from it and just kind of never went back, though for a while I was still buying each new book as I was seeing them. But that's neither here nor there. I think there are some things that could definitely be explained better, it's a little confusing the differences between lesser Immortals and Ancients. Why do they need blood, but at the same time can go without? Why was Katie picked to be Toby's mom? Stuff like that could be expanded, but you can still keep up. Anyway, I'm directly off to book 2, which I hardly ever do anymore. I actually try not to read series books back to back anymore, but with the way this book ends, I just can't help myself. Because…Rhyn.
Fury at her situation rose hard and fast. She suppressed it with a few deep breaths. She'd been to Hell and back; Ireland with a moody predator was far better than that. She put on the jumpsuit she hated and emerged, expecting her first good night of sleep in a week. Her nose wrinkled at a familiar scent, and she looked first at the plate full of raw fish on the table and then at the silver-eyed predator with his roped forearms displayed across his wide, bare chest. His look was calculating and judging. "That's it!" She crossed to the table and lifted one from the plate, flinging it at him. "You miserable son of a bitch! You all deserve to be in Hell! Damn you, Toby for ruining my life, and Gabriel, and Ully, and Andre…" With each name, she flung a fish at him. He was unaffected, batting the dead creatures away like flies. "…and you, Rhyn, who should owe me something for freeing you from the depths of Hell! Fuck you all! I swear God, I've had it with all this shit. One week ago, I had a shitty life alone but I was normal. Normal! I know you don't know what the fuck that is, but it means no immortal monsters sucking my blood and tearing up my body, no tattoos, no four-hundred-thousand-year-old angels in the bodies of five-year-olds, no buildings exploding when I get near them, no trip to Hell. And no dead fish!" He stared at her, and she flung the plate at him, furious at his lack of reaction. He didn't care. He couldn't care. Monsters couldn't care!

You. Are. Mine. He hadn't believed the words himself until he said them. He hadn't wanted them to be true. He wanted to fulfil his promise to Gabriel, piss off his brothers, and then walk away. It wasn't quite as easy as he thought, especially since she was so helpless. The doll with the large blue eyes crying on the bed bothered him on more levels than he wanted to admit. He'd meant to piss her off earlier, keep her from developing any sort of affection for someone who had no intention of keeping her. That, too, was more for him than her. The minute he found her missing from the cave, he'd felt an uneasy, unfamiliar sense of concern. He didn't just notice she was gone - he found himself wishing she wasn't. He felt the death dealer's presence. "What, Gabriel?" he said without turning. "Brought you another book," Gabriel said, handing it to him. "Hope it's better than the last." "This one was written by someone in the human realm. The other one was from a bitter immortal." Rhyn accepted the book, glanded at it, and flung it into the ocean. "You're right," Gabriel said, unaffected. "That one was probably bad, too." "I burned the other one. How to Train a Pet Human. Really, Gabe?" "It was worth a try. I don't know anything about them." "They don't eat fish," Rhyn grunted.
~
"Tell me why, Rhyn," she ordered, pushing him to face her. She glared up at him, swaying toward him. His gaze slid over her face and down her body to her breasts. She gritted her teeth and waited. It was hard to reconcile the man before her with the creature that tore apart bodies like meat in a blender. "I wanted you," he said in his low growl, the one that gave her chills. "Why? So you could block others? Revenge against Kris? An easy food source following you around for the rest of all time?" She jabbed him in the chest with each question, unwilling to back down. He snatched her upper arms and pushed her against the wall, their bodies close enough for their chests to brush when either breathed in. The silver eyes were fiery, and apprehension fluttered through her. His scent tickled her senses, his nearness making her warm body warmer. "I. Wanted. You." His words were forced through clenched teeth. "There's gotta be more!" she returned. "You're immortal. You could have any woman you wanted in any time you wanted, including one who'd be far more docile than I am." "You came after me at the Arch." "Yeah. So?" "Why?" he demanded. "I knew you were in danger." "You could've left me my fate, and you didn't. You were a loyal blood monkey." The thought of leaving him to die had never crossed her mind. However, the thought of swan diving off a cliff the next time he called her a damn blood monkey was getting more tempting with each day! "I can't do this much longer," she whispered. "I can't deal with all this shit." "You're strong. You'll survive." "I don't want to survive! I want to be happy and not worry about creatures trying to kill me or how often I'll be wandering into one of your massacres!" "This-" "I know! I know! This is my life, and I belong to you. You're such an insensitive bastard." She strained against him. He didn't budge. Exhausted, she rested her head, then her body, against him. She was tired of fighting, tired of his attitude, tired of everything. He'd hugged her before, an anomaly, she was sure, until his arms now moved around her again. Would she ever understand him? He didn't give a damn about her, and he sounded as if he'd rather she jump from a cliff than bother him. And then he brought her here to be healed. Held her. At one point, he'd called her beautiful, and tonight, he'd called her strong. He rested his chin on her head. She liked the way he smelled, how strong and solid his body was. It was more than comforting; she wanted to melt against him and stay there. The intense sensation startled her. That a mass murdering demon was the only man she'd ever felt so comfortable with made no sense.

Gabriel's soft cluck of disapproval filled the air around him as Rhyn sat in the corner, watching the most vexing woman in the world - his mate - sleep. "You just don't listen," the death dealer said, materializing, a shadow darker than night. "Why would I start?" Rhyn replied. "Thought you'd learned something after all those years in Hell." "Nah." Gabriel was his only friend who didn't judge him. Rhyn patted the chair beside him. The death dealer sat, his trench coat rustling. "You're lucky you don't have to defend Death against anything," Rhyn grunted. "Much more complicated than it looks." "Free will's a bitch," Gabriel lamented. "Yeah." They sat in comfortable silence, the quiet room filled only with the woman's soft snores. She was tired, frustrated, and, worst of all, scared. She'd been scared since Hell, if not before, for which he blamed Kris. "Kris-" "Don't start," Gabriel warned. "At some point, you two need to trust each other." "Not gonna happen." "Immortals are about as imperfect as humans. I don't know about much of anything any more." Rhyn looked squarely at the death dealer, sensing unease for the first time in their long history. "It never sat well, what I did to you," Gabriel said. "I never held a grudge," Rhyn reminded Death's top assassin. "Maybe you should have." "Nope." Gabriel chuckled, then said darkly, "How can you be sure?" "I know," Rhyn replied. "I know what I am, I know what you are, and I know what my brothers are. The rest I don't care about." Gabriel lifted his chin toward the bed. "Work in progress," Rhyn replied with a grimace. "She's mine. The rest will follow." "Wish I had your faith." "I think you mean narcissism," Rhyn said.
“Three and a half stars: An engaging kick off to a new Urban Fantasy series.
Katie is hurriedly trying to get to work on time. Her continual tardiness puts her current job in jeopardy. A cop pulls her over for going two miles an hour over the speed limit. Then the pompous jerk writes her up for taking sleeping pills the night before and a broken taillight. Now she is not only on the verge of losing her job but her license as well. She makes it to the train just in time. While sitting quietly, trying to calm her jangled nerves, a precocious five year old climbs over her to the window seat. She endures him for the rest of the trip. When she gets off the train, the child runs after her claiming she is his mother. Despite her repeated protests that she is not his mother, no one believes her and she is hauled to the police station. Her morning went from bad to worse to hell. It seems she does have a five year old son, but why doesn't she remember him? Her sister and doctor claim she has mental disorders and suffers from bouts of amnesia, but Katie knows better. A strange man, Gabriel, a death dealer appears outside her window. Her new son invites him in and they chat like old friends. Something is definitely not right here. Katie soon finds herself dragged into the ongoing conflict of The Immortals. Seven brothers, who rule over the world and are constantly at war, have the power to save or destroy humanity. Katie has special powers in her blood that can help save the human race. Before she can make up her mind, she is kidnapped and taken to Hell. She is thrown into a cell, surrounded by fiends. Next to her, is Rhyn one of the seven brothers, a terrifying brute. It seems her destiny is tied up with his. Can Katie survive the depths of Hell and get her life back?
What I Liked: *Ms. Ford presents a complex plot with a whole cast of characters. The fate of humanity is in the hands of The Immortals, who can't get along. They are forever embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Death even has her long cold fingers in the pot. Then in walks Katie who has the ability to shift the power. What ensues is mayhem as everyone tries to get their hands on the unsuspecting Katie. This story is action packed and full of surprises. *I enjoyed Katie. When the novel opens she is a troubled eighteen year old girl who is just trying to get her feet on the ground. When Death sticks her nose into Katie's world, some nasty curve balls are thrown her way. Katie takes the hits and keeps picking herself up. Granted, she doesn't at first come across as a feisty heroine, but she grows and learns to fight and do whatever it takes to survive. This girl is plunged into some hellish situations, and yet she manages to hang in there, you have to admire her. *I liked that I spent the whole time trying to formulate who was good and who was evil. I changed my mind several times, and even after finishing I am still conflicted. For instance, Rhyn, he has been surviving in Hell for centuries, constantly tortured. Needless to say, he is pretty peeved. He is unrefined, bold, and stormy. Yet, there are glimmers of hope. These little sparks kept me engaged, wondering how I would ultimately see him. He isn't the only one, the brothers, Gabriel, and even Death, all have their own covert agendas, and you are never sure where their intentions lie. *This is a self published book, but do not steer away. This is one of those great finds. It has a intricate and engaging story and is properly edited. Currently, the ebook is free on Amazon. So what do you have to lose? And The Not So Much: *As I mentioned, Ms. Ford endeavors to bring us a complex plot with numerous characters. While I enjoyed her approach, it became a bit confusing to keep track of it all. Also, because there were so many characters, some weren't as fleshed out. I still do not have a clear picture on what exactly The Immortal Brothers are, they seem to be some type of a vampire, but that doesn't feel right. I think a more thorough explanation on The Immortals and their powers would be beneficial. *For some reason, I was drawn to a secondary character with a bit part. His name was Jerry and he was one of the fiends in the cell block. This guy, or whatever he is, has a wicked sense of humor that made me laugh. I would have loved to see more of this character. I am hopeful in the next book, perhaps. *This book ends rather abruptly. There isn't a big cliffhanger, but just when the story was taking off and getting interesting, it just ends, leaving you kind of hanging. I wish that their had been more of a conclusion, but as it stands, it just felt like a breaking point before a commercial break, if that makes sense.

I think that parenting makes your humor shift a bit, because I'm sorry but I died laughing at the beginning of this book. First Katie gets pulled over by a cop on her way to work at the ungodly hour of around 4:30 am. She was speeding(37 in a 35) and had a tail light out. This really tickled me because after the officer was through with her she had a lot of charges and an extremely expensive ticket. It wasn't funny that she got all of these charges, it was funny because something like this would so happen to me. I had an instant connection with Katie. That doesn't happen to often. So I was still chuckling about the cop when she hops on the train to continue her journey to work. She had a headache coming on and was pushed out of the way rather rudely by a child around the age of 5 years old that hopped on the train at the next stop. Since becoming a mother, you realize that children will always embarrass you and that majority of the innocent things they do are annoying or rude to most people. So as she is about to get off the train, this child (Toby) starts screaming for his Mama. Katie thinks nothing of it, maybe the child's mother was in front of her, until the little boy latches on to her. Katie is shocked but wants to help the child and asks him his name. By this time the child has made such a scene that several people have stopped to watch. So she asks him about his mother and Toby begins to cry rather loudly. He was claiming that she was his mother and that she was trying to leave him on the train. Katie is at a loss. She knows she has no children and thinks maybe the child has mistaken her for someone that either looks like her or has on the same outfit. Its logical right? By this time, several people have made rather rude comments and judgemental remarks, the police officer has gotten involved. He has asked for both of their ID's and sure enough the names match, as well as the addresses. Needless to say Katie was on her way very shortly afterwards to the police station. Now at this point your either going, WTF? or your like me and rolling on the ground. Talk about the worst case scenario on a Monday morning commute? So what I have described hasn't gotten us out of the first chapter and I am already completely hooked.
So I loved Katie. She was a straight talking, no nonsense or drama, snarky, sarcastic, roll with the punches kind of chick. In short? She rocked. She wasn't a supreme fighter or loaded with supernatural skills, or even drop dead beautiful but more of an outcast. My kind of unlikely heroine. This book covers a lot of info about both worlds, and the intermediates between, in a very entertaining and completely delightful way. When your not laughing at the twisted humor, your sitting on the edge of your seat wondering if Katie is ever going to get a break. LOL..So far...NO.
Lizzy, where have you been? You have put a completely fresh spin on the immortal realm and I haven't enjoyed a book this much since Larissa Ione's Demonica series. But without the sex :) I enjoyed it so much in fact that as I was completely engrossed in the second book, I ignored my email until I finished. I was at my wits ends needing to know what was going to happen to Katie and getting ready to go buy the third book. I had an email from Lizzy wanting to know if I would like a copy of the 3rd book and I literally screamed in excitement!!!!! This was 5:30 this morning, and I had to get up at 8 to go to work :)!! This series was well worth the loss of sleep!!! Lizzy's books are on tour right now and she will be with me tomorrow for a guest post and giveaway!! Paranormal fans you don't want to miss the opportunity to check out this series. Lizzy has captured yet another adoring fan in me!!!
Let me start by saying that I am SO FRICKIN' HAPPY that I have books 2 and 3 already.
Seriously, I got to the end and Katie's response to Rhyn as she's walking out of the garden made me hate her a little. But I was expecting to tap my kindle and start a new chapter but that was the end of the book! Yikes! Well, luckily, I have book 2, Katie's Hope. But I can't start it tonight.
We all know that one page turns into one chapter turns into one whole book, I mean series! :)
Katie. Poor Katie. She wakes up, having a rough day to start: is pulled over by a jerk cop who fines every single thing coming out of her mouth, tells her to appear in court tomorrow. SPLENDID. And then suddenly this grubby little kid is following her and calling her mama. She tries to shake the kid loose, ends up at the police station, and lo and behold it's HER kid, complete with I.D. matching her address and everything! She gets home finally, freaking out a bit, only to call her sister who asks if she's having one of her amnesia episodes again. So crappy day, and then you find out that not only are you the mother of a 5 year old at the age of 18, but that child was the product of a rape and beating so bad that it left you with stress amnesia. Oh, and that kid? He is an angel and talks to Gabriel, the Death Dealer and happily informs Katie that he sees Gabriel all the time, usually in each life when Gabriel comes to take his mama. o.O
Pretty sure Katie was screaming:
I know I would've been!
So from there, and sorry but I'm gonna sum up because that's what I do: Katie is a hot commodity. Turns out she's a special kind of hybrid human, destined to be an Ancient's mate, and as there are/were 7 of these Ancients, they all want her. Rhyn was banished to hell and kept there by his sadistic, traitorous brother, Sasha. Death tells Gabriel that this human, Katie, is gonna be his mate. Rhyn has ONE chance not to mess up, not to obliterate the world, or he'll suffer a true death. A death there is no coming back from because, hey, Death is all powerful and being immortal doesn't mean squat if you're on her list. NO PRESSURE THOUGH.
Rhyn's family is messed up and we only get to see a few of them. Katie is attacked repeatedly, even Rhyn isn't really a knight in shining armor, but ohhhhh the potential is there.
This book is ripe with characters: delicious ones, malicious ones, saccharine yet bitchy ones (coughsHANNAHcoughs), hoity toity arrogant jerks, tortured soul dark heroes, and a plethora of stories to be had.
I need to get on to book 2, but that's next week for the club read. :)
If I had to describe this book with two words, it would be mass confusion.
I opened this book and immediately felt like I was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but without any nice creatures to help me figure out where the hell I was or what the hell was going on. Confusing, weird, bumfuk Egypt... Hell, if you asked me my name right now, I might not know. Yes, it's really that confusing!
Seriously, the book feels like it started in the middle of some other book that the author wrote in imaginary ink. A lot of character names were dropped all over the place and I had no idea who, what they were, where they came from, what they were doing, nothing/nada.. Just mass confusion for a good 30% of the book.
Apparently, the book starts after some huge immortal war between a bunch of brothers, but in the middle/start of another conflict between the bros, death, the Dark One, and some other f'ers that I still have no damn clue about. Oh, lest I forget to mention the human, pill popping, whiskey chugging, chick with a smart ass mouth & weird blood is the key to it all.
Around half way through the book, the identities of everyone start to make a little sense, but then the damn characters are acting like schizophrenic, sociopaths.
And, at the end, I still don't get Wth the immortals are supposed to be; they shift realms between worlds, one is a half shapeshifter/half demon that sucks blood like a vampire and is titled an ancient immortal, a death demon that has a kind conscious & can heal folks and read minds, etc.
Oh the crazy shiz in this book...
"He got off on it as he dry humped her and sucked her life from her."
" Hey, Lunchmeat, what do you call a human running down the street?" "Fast food." A humorous monster that promises the human chick, or Lunchmeat as he so sweetly named her, that he'd kill her with just a little pain and only fuc$ her after she was dead. Nice
Him: You're a dumb blood monkey...I like you better when your quiet... You're weak and foolish... Her: I think I'm falling in love with you. Romantic, huh?
Him: "She wasn't beautiful, but she was pretty enough with a body she plainly took care of." Readers, are you swooning yet?
Bottom line:
Despite the majority of the book being about immortal mates, there's nothing, and I do mean nothing, remotely romantic, swoony, or sexy about this book. The male MC degrades the female at every turn. The female Mc is constantly writing stupid checks with her mouth that her arse can't cash, but then turns around and submits to the male MC at every turn; again, it's illogical behavior.
You'll most likely keep reading if you start just so that you can try to make sense of the craziness, but I can assure you that it's a lost cause.
Sometimes you come across a book which you just cannot put down. Doesn't matter what you're doing you think about it and are desperate to get back to it. With some books you expect this. The cover, the blurb and the title are all kinds of awesome and you just know you're gonna be in for a treat. What's even better though is when you don't expect it, and the awesomeness comes out of nowhere.
Katie's Hellion, to me, is one of those books.
Here's how I stumbled upon this little treasure. I was perusing Amazon the other day and Katie's Hellion was up as a free read. Why not I thought, the reviews looked good and the premise was intriguing... so I downloaded... and then I read, and couldn't stop reading, and now I'm freaking desperate for the next installment.
Oh yes I should say that Katie's Hellion is part of a trilogy called 'Rhyn Trilogy' and a quick surf has shown that book two isn't finished yet. I bloody hope Lizzy Ford gets a move on because I want to know what happens NOW!
I've sat here tonight trying to understand what exactly it is about this book that I loved so much and I think it's a combination of several things. An intriguing storyline, a likeable hero and heroine and the writing style of the author. She also created a heroine that questioned and rallied and didn't just accept her fate and I like that. Oh, and the secondary characters were fab, I want them all to have their own stories! In the end all this worked so well and I read, read, read, desperate to know what happened. She left me on a freaking cliffhanger though! Urggg... but I'll wait, and book two will be all the more satisfying for it.
Now don't get me wrong Katie's Hellion was not without faults. The complex world Lizzy has created took a little while to get my head around and I felt like she could have explained it a whole lot better and moved the reader along with her a whole lot easier. The beginning was also a little rushed and she glossed over the heroine's emotions a little I felt. I'd have liked a bigger build up, but then I'm a build up kinda girl. What else? Well some parts were a little repetitive, phrases and whatnot and the sex scenes were sweet rather than smoking--but then this is billed as suitable for YA, so I mustn't complain.
Overall I love it, just in case you haven't picked up on that yet, and it is a clear 5 hearts. I WANT more, more, more!!! Now!!!!
actually 4.25 stars Who knew ancient immortal brothers had divided the continents to watch over puny humans? Sibling rivalry, genetics and contentious natures keep the brothers warring, arguing and distrusting each other. While going about their usual immortal ancient duties they find an immortal ancient mate living among humans.
Though the first located mate should go to the eldest brother, Kris, and couple her power with his, the wickedest brother, Sasha, is determined to keep that from happening. Both brothers pursue the immortal ancient mate with mixed results.
Rhyn, the youngest and most uncontrollably powerful and volatile of the immortal brothers is given a stay from death and temporary freedom from Sasha's hellish prison. Death is also willing to give him a second chance provided Rhyn will care for and take the immortal ancient mate as his own.
Katie Young has no idea what's going on but after a hellish morning, her day becomes confusing and maddening as she tries to figure out what happened to reality. No matter that immortals, death dealers, vampires, demons and who knows what else are after her, Katie is determined she's not going to be a simpering, whimpering human cowering in the corner. My taste was well served by the leads and some of the less savory secondary characters.
After an exciting start, this read went off the rails a bit for me and I sometimes didn't know who was speaking as if pieces may have been missing. I think it was because Rhyn instantly made a mark and then disappeared for a while. This was rectified with his reappearance and this reader was happy indeed.
Ms. Ford's work is new to me the writing style showed a fun flair and was a good premise and world. This reader's foremost thought on the final page was this was yet another delicious read languishing in TBR land way too long!
Katie is your average American girl, 22 years old, down on her luck and unsure what she wants to do with the remaining of her life. Rhyn is an Ainchant immortals entice to live the rest of his immortal days in hell, governed by his brother Sasha, hunted by his other brothers due to his inability to control his powers. Leaving him as the greatest threat to humanity. Katie gets flung into the immortal world suddenly leaving her head spinning and landing her in hell with the scariest creature she's ever seen, Rhyn. As the fight for humanity heats up in a new take on good versus evil, Katie is the key to saving all of man kind while Rhyn is sworn to protect her. I was reeled in within the first paragraph and save for the need to eat and sleep, I could not put the book down. Lizzy Ford weaves a fabulous tale of good versus evil in this nail biting paranormal romance, that reads as a great mystery/suspense novel. The bedroom scenes were a bit tame for my taste but Ms Ford is forgiven as the book was so intense I didn't pay it much mind. I give this book a solid 4.5/5 for amazing content, world building and fabulous character building. At one point I actually cried and 2 sentences later I was laughing. .5 for minor grammatical errors. I cannot wait to read the next book!! ***book provided by the Author through Read2review.com for an honest review***
Loved this book!! The only catch about this book is you really have to read at least half of it to really get sucked into this interesting world of immortals. I was frustrated in the beginning because I really was kind of confused taking in this whole new world. The immortals are not your typical "vampires" or "werewolves" or whatever. The author Lizzy Ford really creates something new and interesting and I think that the reason it takes so long for the plot to really begin is because the reader needs quite a bit of background information.
That being said I instantly took a liking to Katie. She is sassy and not afraid to speak her mind even if it seems to land her in quite a bit of trouble. She is a little spitfire. Although vulnerable due to her mortality she unwillingly is submerged into the world of the immortals and constantly proves how brave she is. Rhyn on the other hand is cocky and stubborn and has more animalistic than human tendencies. Alone they are outcasts, but together...let's just say it makes for interesting and fun reading.
Another really good entry from Lizzy Ford. The more I read her stuff the more I like it.
This is the first of a trilogy. This book is setting the stage; we have good character development and an interesting plot. Others have said that the story starts off slow...I would not say it starts off slow as much as I would say that this is a book that could have a LOT of depth of characters written or added in. And I have a feeling that is what book 2 and 3 are for. I suspect we will not get full closure on things such as the importance of Toby until book 3.
We are left with our own imagination as to what the characters look like, what the castle looks like etc. So be ready to use your imagination to fill the void. Again this is a trilogy, and the ending is abrupt. Book 2, Katie's Hope which I just started reading takes off where this one left off.
Recommend this book as a read. Easy to follow. Clear concise language.
Excellent. It's refreshing to see a story plot that's unique.
I found Katie's Character to be quite strong, especially when facing all the changes to her world as she knows it, and then going to Hell...from there, the book turns into one heck of a Roller coaster ride.
Rhyn's Character is also a strong, tortured, vengeful Ancient, who is considered by his family to be Evil, but Katie sees a man/Ancient that deserves a second chance.
There is so much more to this book than Characters. The story draws you in, and has you Cheering for one of the 'Bad guys' (Rhyn.) and booing the good guys 'Kris, Jade, ect.."
I also like how both Rhyn and Katie are considered black sheep of their families. Don't want to give too much of the story away. Get a copy, and treat your brain to wonderful book!

this is far from book genres I usually read, but it made me keep reading until I finished the book!
"I respect the Code. Doesn’t mean I always have to follow it." love Rhyn's character he seemed to care to no one but still end up helping everyone eventhough they think of him as low creature.
I feel sorry for Katie when she's bragged into other side of the world, she's weak in her human body, but she's strong inside. The bravest, weirdest of all times.
I like Kris for his political views and the determination to rule the world in order to keep the peace for humanities and balance the world. Hope He can managed when their elder brother and their father was dead-dead for good!
I liked it! It was a bit odd in the beginning for me, but I got into the story line. It's an age-old plot basis about the ever-present battle between good and evil. Honestly, it's the first book that's categorized as a "fantasy" book that I've liked, and finished. The 2nd book won't be out until next month...wondering where it'll take Rhyn, Katie, Kris, and all the other characters.
This series reminds me of a mix between Ione's Demonica series and Moning's Fever series. I like Katie and Rhyn together. I hope they can work it out. I really like Gabriel's character. I'm skeptical as to what happened to the older brother. It was a little too glossed over. I look forward to seeing how this trilogy is resolved.
Katie's Hellion (Book I, Rhyn Trilogy) by Lizzy Ford
This book was gifted to me for an honest review. Thank You!
Gabriel, lover to Death, helped sentence his friend Rhyn to Hell for something he didn't deserve. Death says that Rhyn will have to die to save humanity but that a woman destined to be his mate can change his fate. Gabriel delivers Rhyn his immortal powers and a book on how to care for humans.
Katie is having a really bad morning, she is pulled over for driving two miles over the speed limit and with a broken tail light. Then a child she doesn't know follows her and everyone insists that he is her son. Katie is a pill popping, whiskey swilling 18-year-old and she is supposed to have a 5-year-old son. When Katie left her apartment that morning, she didn't have a son, after meeting Toby for the first time and returning with him she finds that her apartment has been transformed with toys, drawings, furniture and pictures as if he belonged there, though Katie has no memory of him. Katie's sister says she is having amnesia issues and should call her doctor.
Gabriel, the death dealer follows Katie and hangs around her apartment freaking her out. He tells her that she wasn't supposed to remember her life before Toby showed up. But Katie is an immortal mate, an Ancient's mate and immune to immortal magic.
“She’d been seen by a doctor who’d been dead twenty years, was babysitting a four-hundred-thousand-year-old angel, and the grim reaper spent the night on her couch. Things really couldn’t get much stranger.”
"It’s a long story, one you don’t necessarily need to know to understand your circumstances. My brother’s people found you and identified your unique gift for…blocking their natural talents. It makes you valuable and dangerous. If our enemies find you, they can take your blood and modify the creatures who work for them to make them immune to us."
Lizzy Ford exceptionally draws the reader into Katie's story. I was fascinated by the world building and Lizzy Ford's voice. I liked how flawed Katie was, which made her more interesting.
Katie is kidnapped and thrown into Hell in the cell right across from Rhyn.
Once Rhyn claims Katie things start getting exciting. Poor Katie has a really hard time associating with these immortal demonic creatures. They are really rough with her and it seems like every two pages she is bloody and beaten. But she is tough and never stops the whiskey swilling and wise cracking.
I really liked the intimacy between Rhyn and Katie, they are both so broken and flawed. Rhyn starts to thaw and care for Katie at the same time Katie wants to give him up and his world. The immortal world is too dangerous for Katie, she wants her humdrum existence back. But Rhyn is willing to fight for her and keep her safe, he just doesn't know how. This is the first book in the trilogy and I hope that by the end of the third book Katie and Rhyn end up together, happy and safe. I like the two of them and I definitely like them together. Katie and Rhyn can save each other, I just know it, if they can figure out a way to keep Katie alive and Rhyn from destroying the world. But if it was easy, it wouldn't be interesting.
