A must-read for all entrepreneurs. The story of Neoforma, a software firm that accidentally became a dotcom darling and eventually a public company. Starting Something engages the reader with the captivating story of how Neoforma survived its struggles against daunting obstacles--and in the process delivers on a very human level a wealth of insight, information, and advice for entrepreneurs.
This book was much more interesting than I thought it would be when I saw it on the required reading list for a class on Entrepeneurship that I was taking. I subsequently dropped the entrepeneurship course (this semester I've been spread far too thin even without the course), but decided to keep reading the book because it was an easy read and I was looking for advice on starting a company. I'm glad I finished the book. I have a much better understanding of how messy and difficult starting a company is, and of how long it really takes for a company to take off, in most cases. The book reads like a story, and I appreciated the news snippets sprinkled in between chapters which helped ground me in a timeframe. I am not sure if this is THE book to read if you're starting a company, but it certainly is A book to read. I would recommend it.
