This detailed memoir of a 1959 trip into the Rif, the northern mountain chain of Morocco, grew out of extensive field trips taken by Hart's husband, David Hart, an American anthropologist. For the author, who was born in India to British parents and grew up in Morocco, accompanying her husband on these trips was the realization of her teenage fantasies. Although daily life in an isolated village was far different from her youthful dreams of romance and adventure, Hart's fascination with this exotic land was in no way dimmed by the physical discomforts of primitive conditions. The central fact of her stay in this Muslim society was the seclusion of women, whose sheltered domain was the central courtyard located in every Rifian household. Since David Hart had no access to this feminine world for his fieldwork, he hoped Ursula would be accepted by the tribeswomen and be able to learn about their guarded rituals. She was, and in this reminiscence she carefully describes that circumscribed life of housework, cooking and bearing children, one complicated by the inevitable jealousies of polygamy. However interesting the subject matter, this book suffers from the author's condescending attitude toward Third World life, as well as awkward passages that mar the narrative flow: "`Ooh!' `Eeh!' were the cries of exclamation tinged with surprise as well as shock over my panties.''

لولا صبر المؤلفة اورسولا وتحملها للعيش الصعب في الريف ولكل تلك المشقة,لولا بساطتها و اندماجها السريع في حياة الريفيات حتى اصبحت واحدة منهن,ولولا انفتاح الريفيين وتقبلهم لها لتعيش وسطهم تاكل مما ياكلون و تلبس كما يلبسون في المناسبات و الاحتفالات حتى انهم اطلقوا عليها اسما ريفيا "دمونات" فتقبلته بكل فرح و سرور لكي يسهل على النساء الريفيات التواصل معها ..لولا كل هذا لما وصل الينا هذا الكتاب الرائع الذي يصف لنا بدقةالحياة في الريف في الستينات حيث كان الريفيون يعيشون حياة بسيطة, حيث كانت التقاليد الاسلامية ممتزجة بطقوس الجاهلية تشكل الثقافة الريفية.
حين كانت النساء يعشن وراء باب فناء المنزل,يمضين كل اوقاتهن في الاعمال المنزلية لتوفير الراحة لازواجهن و ابنائهن خاصة الذكور منهم, حين كانت العقلية الذكورية تسيطر بشكل كبير على الثقافة الريفية فالرجال اسياد و النساء خادماتهم.
ففي الستينات كان ولوج المدرسة امرا مستحيلا لدرجة ان ابناء الريف كانوا يعتبرونها سببا رئيسيا لفساد الاخلاق, النساء كن غير قادرات على استيعاب فكرة ان الفتاة ستذهب الى المدرسة لتتعلم القراءة و الكتابة بدلا من المكوث في المنزل بجانب امها و عماتها و زوجات اعمامهن الى غير ذلك من نساء العائلة الكبيرة حيث الحياة تغلي كما وصفتها اورسولا لتتعلم الاشغال المنزلية و كيف تكون زوجة طيبة في الثالثة عشر او الرابعة عشر من عمرها, و حتى بالنسبة للذكور كانت المدرسة ضد مصالحهم وفقا لتفكير الريفيين في ذاك الوقت.
غير ان الحياة في الريف سرعان ما تغيرت واصبحت اشبه بالحياة الاوروبية نظرا لهجرة اغلب الشباب للعمل هناك لتوفير عيش افضل لاسرهم في الريف,غير ان بعض التقاليد و العادات ظلت صامدة مع كل هذا التغيير الى يومنا هذا خاصة تلك المتعلقة بالمناسبات كالزواج,الولادة..و المناسبات الدينية والموت والجنازة.

Ursula Kingsmill Hart is my paternal great aunt. I very much wish I had the opportunity to get to know her and learn the stories of her fascinating life. She and my grandmother grew up in India as children of an officer in the British Indian Army, later moving to Tangier, Morocco. I’m grateful that despite being a child of colonialism, Ursula respected and wanted to record Morocco’s diverse and ancient ways of life without the lens of her own cultural beliefs. Truly interesting book.

I thank Ursula for her work, patience and the courage to learn about Rifian culture and customs. Without her, we would not know how women from my culture were behaving, talking and interacting with each other in the sixties or maybe before urbanisation. At that time, women also in the west were not considered equal to men or did not have the same rights, but we could clearly see the difference in Rif, where women were second class citizens and could be treated better based on their status: Married, mother, mother of males.., however I would say it was also the same issue in the muslim world at that time. I liked how Ursula described the weddings ceremonies in Rif which unfortunately, are deteriorating and rarely where we can see Izran in Weddings.
Ursula did learn Tarifit in a couple of years because she knows if she want to integrate she needs to learn people’s language, which means it is an easy language, unfortunately we can’t see this phenomenon in Rif from our fellow compatriots in Morocco.
