Your own two feet are all you have when you've been left.
A naive Baylee loves Colt, her boyfriend of four years, more than she ever thought possible. After a little snooping, she's convinced she's well on her way toward hearing an once-in-a-lifetime proposal and starring in the wedding-of-the-year event. Instead, she's blindsided by a very public breakup and the crushing news that Colt is marrying someone else… someone more befitting him and the role his father expects him to take in his law firm.
Baylee may have spent years resenting Ariana, her mother, and her suicide, an intolerable show of weakness in Baylee's opinion, but after Colt leaves her just short of the altar, Baylee sees the world through her mother's eyes. She sympathizes with Ariana's actions and realizes that some things—soul-deep aches—can irreparably damage you and make moving on nearly impossible.
At least that's how she feels until she meets Ryker. With his help, Baylee discovers there is life after Colt, and she prepares to move on by pulling herself up by the bootstraps, holding her head high, and standing on her own two feet. Unfortunately, a new jealous and hateful Colt has his own plans for her, and they are plans no one—especially Baylee—ever saw coming.
I'm excited to reveal that I've written the first book, Left, in a new series, Still Standing. Leftis not a book I'd planned to write. It's a story that found me and would not let me go until it was done. In fact, I was nearly finished writing Underground (Secrets #2) (84k words) when I had a dream... one that haunted me for the entire day afterward. I tried to stay focused on Underground (Secrets #2), but Left's(Baylee's) story couldn't be silenced. I decided to take an hour and write the first chapter, see if the story was as good as it seemed in my head, send it off to my beta-reader, and let him decide if the story lived or died. His words: "Stop everything you are doing and write this book. It must be told." Because my gut was telling me the same thing, I followed his advice.
I wrote morning, noon, and night. I was so consumed with this story that it woke me in the middle of the night and insisted that I get back to work writing. I've never written anything that went as quick and easy as this book. In four weeks, the book was conceived and written (while working at my full-time job during the day). You read that correctly. This 87,500-word book was written in four weeks. Two weeks later, I've read, re-read, smoothed out some rough patches, and sent it off to the editor (GATHERING LEAVES - Cassie McCown). I'm not sure how long it will take for her to finish the editing, but she and I have agreed on a release date of 9/1/13.
Like every book I've ever written, Left has amazing characters and exciting twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Since no story is complete without them, there are tragedies and injustices that will break your heart and make you want to kill characters off yourself. Left is a complicated book that can't be described with just one word. There are times when the characters are warm and emotional right before they become hot and passionate. The story vacillates between heart racing and deeply disturbing.
Characters (as I envision them):
Baylee Messenger
is woman who loves as deeply as she hurts and who is as loyal as she is naive.
Colt Henderson
is the man Baylee has given the last four years of her life to only to find that he's not nearly the man she's made him out to be in her heart.
Ryker Russell
is enough of a knight in shining armour to step in when he sees a woman in need and stay with her until she finds her way back from despair.
Yep that's me after reading this. Oh how I love triangles and best friends=lovers equally. I long for them! I turned into a I'll love anything with Alpha's. I prefer extreme but hey, I love them all! I'm usually not satisfied with not enough involvement between the two alpha's in triangles. This one had a lot! I need them to fight over her, each one always intruding on the other. Colt, what an ass he ended up being! Just like the syp said about what his plans, nobody saw it coming? I'd have to agree, so yeah above provides a clear enough visual of my face.
Oh, let's not forget to mention the "why" he proposed to someone else. PATHETIC. But it's the best thing that could have happened because we get RYKER and hell if he isn't perfect.
"I can assure you, Baylee, when I fuck you, it won't be something you'll forget or wonder if it happened. You'll know it, and you'll want more."
Even a nun wouldn't turn down an offer like that.
Then we have several other wealthy uppity-up jackasses planning and scheming behind the scenes. Then the conniving bitch herself, Eden. I know exactly what she's up to. Usually there's always a shit stirrer waiting in the wings.
And our heroine, Baylee. Poor girl. Seems everyone is out to ruin her life. Colt is literally losing his mind and won't let her be. Even after the shocker, I believe he isn't done yet. The fact this was a cliffy pissed me off. I missed that part. I'm getting sloppy! I hate reading unless a book(s) are finished. I do know I'm ready for more Ryker and I want Kaylee to kick Eden's ass. I do want to mention, it's been a LONG time since this one. I'm scared the 2nd will never be done! Two authors have done that to me so far. I hate it! So I am going to be thrilled if it's just taking longer. So keep that in mind if you choose to read it.
I cannot say enough how I enjoyed and loved this book. I went from anxious to hurt, to swooning, to crying my eyes out. Loved, loved it. Lots of angst.
I fell in love with Baylee right away, the things she would do for the person she love. She's hot, sweet, funny and a fighter. I love when she dresses and tries and seduce her man ;) She thought she's finally gonna get proposed from her boyfriend.
She's been with Colt for 4 years, sacrificing everything to support him. Colt looks confused and sad and he seem to love Baylee.. till she blindsided Baylee with that very public break up, omg, I was soooo mad! But no, that wasn't enough, he went cray cray and abusive!
Ryker, my knight and shining armour, he was there for Baylee. I am so in love with him. His not only hot, rich, and again hot, but he has a huge heart. He knows how to take care of the people he loves. He knows what he wants and he wants Baylee and he'll do anything to protect her and show her how one should be loved. The chemistry between Baylee and Ryker was just sooo hot!
There is soooo much more going on in this book. I love how it approaches the issue domestic abuse. I was touched with Ryker's mom Joss, her story and what she told Baylee, "there's no shame in needing other people. Take what is being offered and help someone else out later."
The end is not so much a cliffy but that their story continues on the next book. And I can't wait for the next one, nope, I want more Baylee and Ryker. ❤
And I would like to thank Ms T.R. Graves for giving me this book for an honest review.
Well, I'm going to have to agree with another reader that the novel is definitely full of drama. There's plenty of it. As for the romance, it didn't work for me. Everything about it felt rushed, even robotic at times (if that makes any sense). As for sexual chemistry, there was absolutely none between them - zero, zilch, nada - not even a spark.
"I want you to stop fighting this thing between me and you. It's bigger than both of us, and I'm convinced there's a reason we met."
Are you kidding me? What "thing" between them? They've just met; he helped her out of an awkward situation where she then proceeds to get plastered; let's her stay in his hotel suite where he doesn't take advantage of her as he's a gentleman; whisks her away out of town the very next morning after they've met; buys her tons of expensive clothing and shoes - and he says there's a "thing" between them? Really? He felt something between them? Well if they did it's news to me because I'm telling you, whatever chemistry or sexual desires that's supposedly sparking between them is in my opinion, non-existent. In fact, I thought both characters came across as quite flat and uninteresting. Sure, Ryker's handsome and sexy and ridiculously rich (aren't they all?). She's drop-dead gorgeous and terrific at her job - you know, the usual characteristics of every heroine in every novel. Problem is there's very little else to them; lack of character development which in the end leaves you with a hero and heroine who both come across as lifeless. Well in Baylee's case, lifeless and an idiot. With all the signs right in front of her she still doesn't catch on that Colt is and has been cheating on her. And that PI she hired? What a moron. Someone revoke his license please. And just like another reader mentioned, how is it at all possible that Ryker and Colt don't even know each other when Colt's father and Ryker's mentor/father-figure have been best friends forever? Whatever. Why do authors think their readers will just accept everything they write? Eye-ball rolls indeed. In conclusion, I have absolutely no plans on reading whatever installments are to follow in this series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Let me start off by asking who is this author and where has she been? I can’t believe this book was written in 4 weeks. I need warn readers though, it ends with a cliffhanger, it sucks I know, but as far as endings with cliffhangers go, this is by far the best I have read. (Loved that twist at the end). I’ve been numbingly reading so many books lately and haven’t crossed one that has caught my full attention like this one. As soon as I read the prologue, I knew I was in for something good. This author managed to grasp and keep my undivided attention in a few pages. It felt like the book was the right length. I loved, savored and enjoyed every single chapter. I have to agree with your Beta reader on this one Mrs. Graves, stop everything you are doing and give us the second and hopefully the final book on this series. I cannot endure any more suffering; I finished reading this book with a headache and feeling exhausted. I was so into it, that it took everything out of me in a good way of course. I’m so glad I read this book. I Loved Ryker :)
*ARC provided by Author for Honest Review* I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t expecting it to be bad but I wasn’t expecting it to be so great and for me to love it as much as I did. I was apprehensive to start this one considering the blurb. I mean I didn’t expect a blossoming romance to work so well considering the circumstances nor did I factor in Ryker. One of the things I loved most about the story was how invested I became early on. I even grew an affection for Colt, which diminished as the story went on. I felt Baylee’s pain and suffering when things took a turn for the worse. The writing will not only suck you in but engage your emotions as if the pain was your own. It was hard watching Colt blindside Baylee and even more so as he continued to deteriorate throughout the novel.
“I think he cares as much as he’s capable of caring… It seems to me his father’s approval mean more to him than anything. He cares for you, but you-any woman-will always be second to his father.”-Ryker
Baylee’s life turns to shit almost overnight. The love of her life suddenly drops her right when she thinks things are going to change for them, for the better no less. Unfortunately for Baylee, Colt is more concerned with his father’s wants and needs than his or even Baylees’. Not a few feet away awaits Ryker and from that night on her life is trivial no longer.
“I’ve known for a long time that I’m a lot like my mother. Too much like her. I’m not sure what broke my mother’s heart and caused her to commit suicide, but I know there are people ion the world who can push mo to that point... and if Ryker hadn’t been there last night, Colt’s leaving me might have unleashed the woman inside of me that would have convinced me there is a way to ease the pain.”-Baylee
Ryker has a very take charge personality and before Baylee knows it, she’s under his thumb and letting him numb her wounds. No, they don’t have sex right away or even really have an insta-relationship and I was super grateful for that fact. Ryker helps Baylee examine her life with Colt and discover her own self worth. For someone who was willing to give her life to a man who cared so little about her to throw her away at his father’s request, Baylee has a lot of soul searching to do.
“There’s only one woman here who is my type, and it’s you.”-Ryker
However, finding yourself and happiness can’t be easy when said ex won’t stop coming around. Every time Baylee thinks she has things figured out and tries to move on with her happiness, Colt has to step in and stir things up. To say Colt goes a bit crazy would be an understatement, for someone who wanted the breakup, he has a hard time letting go. As if breaking her heart is not enough Colt has to conintually work to make Baylee regret leaving him, as if she was the one who broke it off. He certainly has multiple personalities that in all the years they were together he kept hidden extremely well. Sure the situation sucks for Baylee but I can’t help but be thankful she was able to see Colt’s true colors.
“Like a chemical reaction where the heat gradually builds until it’s as scorching as a roaring fire, Ryker’s kiss and the degree with which he wants me makes me hotter and hotter by the second.”-Baylee
This story was hot. Not only was I sucked into the storyline and the character dilemmas I was also invested in their relationship and journey of falling in and out of love. I loved Ryker, especially his secret identity. I was a bit disappointed by how connected everyone was at the company because it all seemed a bit over the top but I was thankful he was in a position to help Baylee at all. Poor Baylee hasn’t had it easy since she lost her mother. She carries guilt over that even though she was only a child. Even though she and Ryker start off as friends, I loved the connection between the two. I would have liked more from Ryker like his POV or more of his story but I’m sure book #2 will not disappoint. Sometimes it’s not until you think you’re going to lose someone that your feelings have a way of coming to light and Ryker never backed down from what he was feeling. It was a very powerful emotion for a male character. I definitely have a special place in my heart for Ryker.
“I’ve always wanted to fuck someone on my desk, but I’ve never met anyone in my entire life that would have looked as beautiful s you splayed out there as you did today.”-Ryker
I honestly loved this book. It sparked all my interests and kept be invested from the beginning. I never expected to enjoy it so much nor love the storyline as much as I did. There is really no mystery but this can certainly be labeled a romantic suspense. Don’t let the blurb fool you, this is a turbulent ride of upheavals and missing seatbelts. Thankfully there is no horrid cliff-hanger but there is certainly an ending deserving of more. Seems as if Baylee’s fight for love is starting all over again and this time she has to fight for her man. I can’t wait. Anxiously awaiting the sequel and I would certainly recommend you read this.
Holy s#it! This is one intense read! There are so many twists and turns - I had a really hard time putting Left down. Having read Ms. Graves before, I knew I liked her writing style. But Left...it just blew me away! I hope I can put my feelings into words in some sort of coherent manner...
Baylee Messenger suffered the traumatic loss of her mom when she was only 10. Twelve years later, she has a college degree, a successful career, and a loving, stable boyfriend of four years. Life seems grand, even if she and Colt, her boyfriend, don't see as much of each other as she'd like. They're both young workaholics, but she feels safe and confident in their relationship.
Until she's doesn't. Colt ends their relationship, at his father's request, in a very public, very ugly fashion. Not only does he end things, he also tells her he's marrying someone else! Now, Baylee finds herself humiliated and unable to afford much. She never thought she'd find herself in this situation much less finding an understanding of her mother's actions from so long ago. But Baylee's strong. Standing on her own two feet is absolutely within her power.
Colt Henderson III is painted as a loving boyfriend but also an approval-seeking workaholic. We don't get a good picture of him prior to the present other than he's asked Baylee for quite a lot in their four years together...moving several times, giving up her career in nursing... After their breakup, Colt begins behaving very erratically. Baylee finds herself scared of him but also wanting to help him. But she's going to need help.
Luckily, Ryker Russell happens to be in the right place at the right time. Ryker is such a true gentleman. He also happens to have firsthand experience in dealing with some of the things Baylee is currently living through. He's more than happy to lend a helping hand. The relationship development between Baylee and Ryker is so well done. Things happen rather quickly, yes, but it all happens during such intense circumstances that it totally works.
As for those intense circumstances, I can't say much without spoiling the story. But the suspense Ms. Graves creates had me flying through the pages, and gasping at each new twist in the plot -- Or crying aloud at a new revelation. There are so many surprising curves and shifts, I actually said aloud 'what a tangled web we weave' at one point. And even better, I never saw these things coming.
The supporting cast of characters is well developed, even if they don't appear often. Eden, essentially the 'other woman', is quite something. I anticipate seeing much more of her in the next installment. She's the consummate rich princess, getting whatever she wants by whatever means necessary. I hope Baylee gets to knock her down a few notches.
What made Left such a rich reading experience are the details. Ms. Graves has the ability to draw such sharp imagery; her words create the pictures in my mind -- and I love that. Also, as Ms. Graves is a nurse, her knowledge of healthcare enriched both Baylee's and Ryker's characters (she's a healthcare consultant, his company does work in healthcare), it also made scenes within the hospital more genuine. Other details that enhanced the story, at least for me, were Ms. Graves' accuracy in describing Texas, the setting. Her descriptions of downtown Houston, the Riverwalk in San Antonio, were so on-the-nose, it made for a very authentic feel.
Since this is the first in the series, Baylee's story is not over. Thank goodness! I, for one, certainly hope the wait for the next book isn't too long. I really, really loved this book. It kept my tummy tied in knots. I'm completely emotionally invested in these characters. I am so anxious to see what's next for Baylee as she continues learning to stand on her own...with Ryker by her side?
Seriously, Ms. Graves...when is the next one coming?!?
**I received an eARC of the book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
While I'm very sorry for all you've gone through, I can't help but thank my lucky stars that you are now available so blokes the likes of me will have a shot at dating an angel,"
Oh.My.Gosh. This my dears was one amazing book. I enjoyed it so much that I literally couldn't put it down for a minute. Left was such an emotional rollercoster. Baylee was such a sweet and caring character. I loved her from the beginning. Bay here is a naive girl whose irrevocably in love with her boyfriend of 4 years, Colt. But as fate would have it, it turns out he wasn't really whom she thought he was after all. She is devastated & heartbroken after a very public breakup. The reason? He's leaving her because by doing so he is obeying his father and guess what else? He'll be marrying someone more"appropriate"for him no less!
With the sound of those alarms permanently etched into my mind, a grief that feels like it may never end consumes me. I want to burst into that room, take Baylee in my arms, and beg her to come back to me... tell her I'm nothing more than a shell of a man without her.
Enter Ryker. He was just the saving grace she needed. Ryker helped her through her breakup and made her realize that there is more to life than just her ex. Though equally he gives her time to grieve what she's lost. Colt on the other hand I'm having mixed feelings about. In the beginning I felt sorry for him since he tried everything to get Bay back but later on his methods simply pissed me off and by the end I was angry as well as feeling sorry for his mental state. I wanted to kick and punch him for what he did to Bay. But than again I knew I could count on Bay's avenging angel, Ryker! ;)
"Bay... you're going to be fine. Mom and I are here with you," I say, kissing her forehead and basking in the knowledge that she might actually survive this... that I might survive this.
The main theme of the book is also an important one. It gives you a lesson right there to not just stand by and bear all the injustice & violence. The way the author has written the theme and all the characters was simply brilliant. Overall, I cant wait for the next book & see how their story continues. :)
Ryker leans down and kisses me and pulls me into him. I let him offer me his strength, swearing I'll do the same for him if he ever needs it.
This book was a very emotional one for me. The theme was one that often gets a lot of notice but the author has done some major justice to our female lead as well as to the theme. She didn't make her a weak and snivelling idiot or make her unrealistic in any way. She was just a naive girl in love with her most perfect boyfriend. It just turned out he wasn't who we all thought he was.
For me Ryker was amazing from the second he was introduced I just wanted her to grab him and run away with him. Not only did he do all the right things he also managed to always say something that was even sweeter than you already felt he was.
That said he did have a few flaws which I am sure we will see more of in the follow up as the book did end on a small cliffhanger. Nothing that had me throwing my beloved Kobo but enough that I will definitely be picking up book 2 to hopefully see the likes of Eden and Colt get their kick to the nuts they both so thoroughly deserve.
But I think for me this book can be summed up perfectly with this great advice. I hope every person takes to heart.
I am shedding tears of stars. Wait, that didn't make sense.
This story was incredibly amazing. From the beginning, it came with a bang, that followed through with a POW! BOOM! BING! SHAZAM! And ended with the CRASH! That's how great this was. Not to mention, the cover was beautiful as well.
The storyline was very well developed. It was thoroughly thought out and was clear. I was never confused or befuddled at what was going on. As a reader I know what I like and these damsel in distress stories get me every time. I love the darker themes and the way they fall out. It's amazing. With themes such as domestic violence, it's incredibly hard to write with such passion and romance. And if it isn't done properly, those books don't play out well. However, the level of emotion in this book was extraordinary. I felt every single thing. Sometimes my heart would jump in giddiness and happiness. The other times, my heart broke. The emotion that can be conveyed through words is crazily impactful- it can make a large difference.
I really liked how the story played out. That beginning had me hooked. It was so unique. The characters were great as well. I loved the main girl protagonist, Baylee, she was the sweetest thing ever. I really connected with her as a character.
In conclusion, just read it. Hope this review helped. I'm definitely looking forward to book two. Bring it!!!
I finished reading this in the wee hours of the morning. My huz resorted to nudging me several times to tell me to go to sleep but I just can't stop reading! I would put it down but eventually open my lights, pick up my reader and continue reading! It happened three times! My huz just shakes his head since he knows it's one of those books. :)
Honestly I was expecting another fiftyesque book but this was totally different and I couldn't be happier. There were no over the top sex scenes but but it was even hotter compared to some overtly and overdone sex scenes with loads of adjectives and description of body parts. The writing has its own cadence, it was subtle and the flow of the story natural. I thought I would question Eden's behavior with how fast she was able to move on from Colt and I'm talking about day(s) but her actions were totally understandable and I attribute that with the author's writing.
And that scene in the bathtub with Colt! Holy shit that part was intense! I keep on reading and rereading it, I can't believe that was happening!
All I can say is that I wish we could have Ryker's POV and I can't wait for the next books! :)
This was an incredible book. I couldn't put it down.
How do you go from happily ever after to your worst nightmare in 2.5 seconds? When you see white picket fences and PTA but are informed none of that will happen because a master manipulator's whims don't include you. When you are suddenly thrown off a cliff by the man you adore only to find the lifeline he's thrown to you is frayed and unwinding in your hands. Somehow, step by step, you just go on. The h of this story is a lot stronger than she thinks she is and her character is so well defined, you can feel her emotions as if they were your own. I really like that. I do think Baylee's relationship with Ryker was pretty fast. After the first night, it jumped into an almost obsessed love. There were some surprises I didn't see coming, some real A-ha moments that really got me. Very clever. Overall, I really loved this book. I can't find book two and I'm hoping it's out there. Even though I really liked this author's writing style a lot, I won't start a new series if this one is unfinished. Nothing is worse than unanswered questions.
So there are no other words than to say I loved this book! Ryker has been promoted to my 2nd book boyfriend (: there is so much compassion and love going on that the bad isn't so bad at time and it ends on a good note I mean it's kind of a cliffhanger but one of the good ones I'm not ranting about that and that is why it got the 5th star!
Never expect – one of the hard lessons in life that we must remember. Baylee had been with Colt for four years, she had dropped everything for him, followed him, quit the job she loved to be with him. After a little snooping, she was relief to find out that he was about to propose to her (or at least she thought). But her dreams of a romantic proposal and grand wedding went into nothingness when Colt suddenly dumps her in a very public manner, leaving her humiliated and alone. He is marrying someone else, a girl that his father wanted for him. Four years went flying out the window. OUCH.
BUT not everyone is as lucky as Baylee to have met a prince charming when she needed him the most. Ryker came along and saved her from doing anything harsh. She was in pain, embarrassed and lost – she now understood why her mother, Ariana committed suicide. Some pains, are more than enough for people to bear. Ryker made her realize her worth and that there is more to her life than Colt. She was ready to move on and take some risks. But her ex-boyfriend has other plans of his own. Completely a stranger, filled with rage and jealousy, Colt will make sure that she will come back to him no matter what it takes.
I like Ryker – he’s really a life-saver and prince charming. He can be kind, thoughtful and really SEXY. When he speaks dirty, I can feel my heart pounding so fast I envy Baylee for having him. Argh! He is a self-made man who would do anything for his mother and for anyone he cares about. He is smart, down-to-earth and persuasive. His past had made him the man he is today. He knew what Baylee was going through, he had been there and witness it happened to someone he cared for. He would do anything to keep her safe.
Baylee is a strong girl with a good head on her shoulders. The good head wasn’t quite present when she was with Colt. She had completely immersed and lost herself in the process. She was working with people who were undermining her just because Colt’s father pulled in some strings for the job. But enough was enough. She decided to finally take some risks and do things she didn’t thought she was capable of doing.
Another thing I love most about the story is the thought of PAYING IT FORWARD. Ryker is where he is today because someone had helped him, with that, he made sure that when help is needed, he is ready to offer it. His mother does the same, after she had survived the ordeal, she made sure that she hands help to women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse.
More than your typical love story, Left deals with issues of domestic abuse/violence. The topic is almost a taboo. Most of us often ignore it since it happens within the four corners of the house. There is something about it that other people don’t want to interfere with something ‘personal or private’ problems that the couple have. Victims are ashamed of it, unable to report it to authorities until the unthinkable happens or until finally someone is brave enough to do so. T.R. Graves wrote an amazing story about a woman who had survived this ordeal, and a woman who is currently fighting it. This is a story about survival, love, fate and giving yourself a second chance.
I was engrossed reading this novel that I have finished this in one sitting. Yes, this is a series, and I understood that it COULD have a cliff-hanger ending but it was worth it. The ending just made me want to read the next one in the series immediately.
*ARC Copy was given in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Itching For Books for letting me be apart of another great tour!
T.R. Graves created a wonderful story. It had my heart broken into tiny peaces, it made me angry at some point. It’s rare an author manages to put such feelings into me just by it’s writing. For me, personally it’s honor I had the chance to read and review this book. It was an incredible journey.
Our main character Baylee it’s a beautiful young girl, kind of week, but who knows how to treat the person next to hear. Too bad the other don't...She’s been dating Colt for 4 years now, and wants to seduce him, to make this relationship still beautiful, even after so many years. She dresses wonderful for her man, thinking this is it, maybe he is going to propose after all. But her hopes goes to waste, because Colt isn't the man she thinks. After sacrificing everything for him, and putting him first in everything, Colt brakes up with Baylee in public and embarrasses her. But, that isn't enough...Colt goes ballistic and becomes abusive with her.
Baylee’s live wasn't easy at all with Colt, she left her nurses job because his dad didn't liked it. He is a lawyer and works with his dad, she on the other hand works at Healthcare. She has done everything Colt asked. But that night when everything changed, and Colt destroyed her life, someone finally stands up for her and helps her, Ryker. He is beautiful, smart, with an attitude and rich. He is the done that tells Colt to stick it and to leave Baylee alone. All the things go crazy, it’s like she is leaving in another life. She finally realizes her purse is missing and Ryker offers to take her home and invites her to his room to look for the keys. They end up staying the night together and she wakes up in his bed.
Ryker things it’s best for him and Baylee to go into an adventure, just for a few days, to leave the problems with Colt and everything behind. So, she decides to leave, and they went to her house to grab some clothes. But, there Colt was expecting her to talk, and to take him back, like this is something normal. When she says no, Colt goes crazy and becomes abusive. Luckily, Ryker it’s with her and manages to save her again. They leave for a vacation in San Antonio for the weekend. They have an amazing time, realizing that maybe Ryker it’s the one for her.
When they come home, she meets again Colt, and he is even more abusive. Every time they see each other he goes nuts and she is afraid. But, Ryker it’s there to help her and to protect her. Will she finally manages to escape Colt? Will she end up with Ryker?
I don’t know what to say more because this book really consumed me. I loved that Baylee didn't let Colt to destroy her and her life completely. She stood up whe she realized what kind of a men he was to begin with. Baylee become stronger with every page. I love the relationship she and Ryker managed to have. He was her savior, her rock! I absolutely, without any doubt, loved it!
Review to come. This is one of those books that suck you in immediately. You can feel Baylee's joy as she's telling her friend that she is expecting a proposal from her boyfriend of four years. You even get a little annoyed at the friend as she's asking, "But HOW do you know?" as if she's trying to burst Baylee's bubble. Secure in knowing that she found a ring and is expecting a proposal, you are enjoying the romance of her trying to keep the spark in her relationship with Colt which has been waning lately. And then...the date comes and BAM! Break-up. No worse than a break-up; he treats her like a prostitute, offering her a check for a million dollars to go away. Baylee has integrity and I was cheering for her!
Colt is a douchebag. And now ... there's Ryker. Talk about a FAST rebound! Ryker is one sexy modern hero, swooping in to save the damsel in distress. As Baylee and Ryker spend a week together, falling for one another, Colt keeps reappearing. Even though he's tossed Baylee to the wayside, apparently she isn't allowed to live her own life and move on. Oh no. He takes back every single present he EVER bought for her - jewelry, clothes, furniture, art, whatever. He shakes her so hard she gets whiplash, and it begins to escalate. Ryker is especially attuned to this and helps Baylee as his own mother survived an abusive relationship.
Difficult subject matter, one that I don't think is discussed often enough, and in this book I think it's brilliantly written because Baylee doesn't see herself as a victim. She has a hard time realizing that she IS INDEED A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. She's trained in self-defense, is a brilliant nurse AND business woman, but she's changed herself to accommodate Colt and his daddy's desires: dresses differently, changed from the job she loved to a job that fits Colt's schedule, trying to be something she isn't, everything is in deference to Colt and his needs. True, he hadn't hit her until after they broke up, but that whole leading up to it, she didn't see the flags and so many women find themselves in that position.
While this has romance and sex, there is also this domestic violence. Luckily, Baylee has support in the form of Ryker and his mother, Joss. Author T.R. Graves kept me attached to my kindle to see what is next, what will happen, and how this resolves. Eden, an enemy of Baylee and an ex-girlfriend of Ryker, oozes maliciousness. I was flabbergasted at the ending (it's KIND of a cliffhanger. I mean, one portion is resolved, but a WHOLE OTHER can of worms is there!) and kept flipping pages on my kindle to see if it was acting up again. Nope...gotta wait for book 2.
if more stars where available to me id use them! Review soon!
First lets admire the cover. I love it, its beautiful and unlike most covers these days there is NO COUPLE ALMOST KISSING!! Yes, I do like those covers im guilty however I do enjoy when a artist thinks out the box. Now lets get down to the nitty gritty. Left is not what I expected at all. I ran through a plethora of emotions. Baylee’s mother committed suicide after the painful and heartwretching delivery of a stillborn child. Severely depressed she takes her own life. 10 year old Baylee finds her in a bathtub drowned with her wrists slit. The tragic story begins the novel. Now Baylee is an adult living with a registered nurse and living with her boyfriend Colt, after following him all around Texas they have finally settled and she became a healthcare consultant. Shes convinced Colt is ready to propose. Only hes not in fact he breaks up with her. At her favorite resturant. Did I mention there were plenty of witnesses and Classy Colt gives her a million dollar parting gift (yep strings attached). Yeah, hes a charmer. So she makes a bit of a scene who could blame her. All the while Colt is crossing lines with her. Thankfully a stranger steps in and comes to her aid. Ryker is that stranger. Though he wont be a stranger for long. Ryker is amazing. He immediately won me over. And of course he made the book boyfriend list, but it doesnt end there oh no. He topped my fecking list. Hes completely perfect in soo many ways. Seriously be prepared to swoon. Hes Baylee’s knight in shining armor. Lucky bitch. Surprisingly I actually like Baylee, normally I do not like competition. There’s somewhat of an instalove with Baylee and Ryker, but given the circumstances I was fine with it. SOME CRAZY SHIT GOES DOWN!! With the rate of what was going on I could totally see how they could become so close so fast. I should probably warn you now. There are some horrible things that happen to Baylee at the hands of her ex. Im not exaggerating in the least. I mentioned a plethora of emotions and I was dead serious. I really felt the despair, heartbreak, sadness, hope, love, understanding, desire {felt that one big time for Ryker ;) }, strength, excitement, anxiousness and worry. Graves in an extremely talented writer. I was so impressed with her ability to grab me. I kid you not I finished this book purchased it for one of my besties {Tyffers shout out!} insisted she read it. Then I gracefully fangirled all over Graves! What?! I needed a place to channel all of my excitement and giddiness. I truly hope to read the sequel soon. Left is one of the best books ive EVER EVER read.
Oh man all the emotions that are swelling up in me. This book was tough to read- and not because it was a bad book, because it wasn’t. I loved every minute of this book. It was the situations in the book that were tough to get through. Baylee goes though so much in this book and I can’t help but cry every time I think about it. This review was not typed with dry eyes. This book touches you and makes you want to help anyone who has or is being mentally or physically abused.
One thing a lot of people will have a problem with is how fast Ryker and Baylee fall for each other. No, they don't outright say it but the body language and how they talk to each other says a lot. I loved it, though. Baylee could be herself with him when she couldn’t with Colt. I felt the connection between them was genuine and not at all forced. I think everyone should read this book, even if it’s not your kind of book. Like I said this book will touch everyone that will read it and I think everyone should experience that. I don’t even know if any of that made sense LOL
P.S. Don’t forget to bring/buy tissue because you are going to need it- big time.
Baylee: I like how strong she was during the whole break up. Yes, she lost it when he first broke it off, but they had been together for FOUR YEARS!! She handles it pretty well and she is ready to strike out on her own. She doesn’t need a man to take care of her. Ryker has other plans though. lol He will do anything for her and that sentiment shows throughout the book.
Ryker: He is a confident business man who isn’t going to let anyone tell him what to do (*cough* Colt *cough*) He knows what he wants and he knows he will eventually get it and he wants Baylee. He makes it known the first time they meet. He is very open about his feelings, but it vague on what his job is, which is a major turning point in the book. I was like REALLY RYKER!!! BTW Ryker is a hot name, I love it *MEOW*
Overall: A heart breaking and inspirational story all in one that will leave you in tears.
Quote:
"I mean... you should do whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it. If a man loves you, truly loves you, he will support you and still love you no matter what. That's the kind of man you should be looking for. That's the kind of man you should be with, Baylee. They're out there. Trust me," Ryker says.
Baylee has been with Colton for four years. He is a lawyer working long hours for his father trying to make partner. She used to be a nurse and loved it but Colts dad didn't so she changed her job and now she is a Healthcare Project Manager. While at lunch with co-worker, her boyfriend walks in with one of the partners at the law office. Baylee tries to play it off and continues to do everything to show colt that she loves him. She gets all done up, wax and all, for her date with Colt where she thinks he is going to propose to her. Instead, Colt breaks up with her leaving a million dollar check to "take care of her". He doesn't stop there though, he continues to humiliate her with truths that anyone would rather not know.. Rich and beautiful Ryker, comes to the rescue and tells Colt to screw of after he keeps shoving the knife deeper. As she is drowning her self in a bottle she realizes her purse was missing. Ryker offers to take her home and invites her to his room to look for the keys but she wakes up in his bed. He offers to take her on an adventure for the day but when they get to her house so she can change, Colt comes home demanding and begging for her to take him back but he gets violent and Ryker steps in. Ryker takes baylee away to San Antonio for the weekend where they have an incredible time and they draw closer to each other. Upon returning, Baylee comes face to face with Colt again. With each encounter with Colt, Baylee finds him getting more violent. Ryker keeps coming and rescuing her and taking care of her. Between Joss and Ryker, they try to help Baylee but also find love along the way. Colt is relentless though and refuses to give up Baylee no matter the cost. This book consumed me. I was completely lost in the world of Ryker and Baylee. Ryker is a dream boat. Every girl wishes to be swept away by a man so beautiful it steals your breath away (doesn't hurt if they are super rich). Baylee was amazing. She never let Colt make her into a helpless victim. She was always ready to take a step into getting on her feet. Her strength was inspiring. The writing was amazing. It takes a lot of skill to get so lost in a book that you feel every emotion. I felt a connection with each character and their every emotion. The only thing that sucked for me was the graphic sex scenes but I went in knowing that it was there. If you love a book that will making you feel every emotion in the book, then you need to grab this asap!
Honesty, this is the best book I read this month. I loved it right from the beginning because the atmosphere was different from the one in the books I’ve recently read.
To be honest, it bothered me a bit the fact that I knew what was going to happen in the first chapter, but I loved that what happened next was completely unexpected. The plot, as you might have realized by now, is intriguing and very well written. The author managed to capture my attention and hold it until I finished reading the book. I did not stop reading until I was done.
In the beginning I hated Bay, I know that she is the main character and all that, but I really, really disliked her. It was like she was brainwashed. She was acting like a society wife with no opinions or life of her own. Later now, she grew on me as she radically changed after she had to start over. She did not give up and I admire her for that. I like to think that she would have stayed strong even if her circumstances were different. I think she would have because of her father, for her father if not for herself.
I liked how Ry was introduced, but I also hated it at the same time. I mean, seriously? Things like that don’t happen in real life, but on paper is swoon worthy. He is without a shadow of a doubt great. He is attentive, only slightly arrogant.
I loved how things are connected. I am sure that the connections will be fully developed in later books so that we can finally understand this web. This book is like a puzzle even though at a first look it does not seem so. At a first look, this book is about a young woman who lost everything and then she had to deal with abuse and was rescued by someone who was able to understand and sympathize with her circumstances.
Domestic violence pays a huge role in this book. Compared to other authors, T. R. Graves handles the situation delicately and in a way that helps us understand better Bay’s situation. This might not be the best way to put it, but I have no other idea how to explain it to you. I must say that I some point I wanted to yell: “Come on! Really?”, but I will let you discover when.
Overall, I love the book and clearly there are a lot of things that we don’t know much about so I am impatiently waiting for the sequel as I want to find out more. The book can be read as a standalone s there is no real need to wait.
Left is a beautiful and tragic story that took my breath away at times. Baylee is living her dream life with the man she loves until he decides to break it off with her to marry a woman more suitable to his father’s approve. This sets in motion, events that Baylee had no idea would ever happen. These events create a story that I will continue to think about for a very long time.
First, while this story starts out gently, it quickly becomes darker. Left is a love story but it is also a story that features domestic violence as a main story point. T.R. Graves does a remarkable job of not only featuring domestic violence accurately; she also shows the darkness and truth behind the dangers of domestic violence. I think this book does a great service by showing an accurate, even if horrible instance of domestic violence.
After the disastrous breakup with Colt, Baylee is left to pick up the pieces of her life and figure out what she is going to next. Then she meets Ryker who makes her see the brighter side of life, and with his help, she really thinks she can move on. Ryker is a great love interest for Baylee, and I really like the two of them together. Baylee is also a woman who wants to stand on her own two feet without the help of other. There is something to admire in the independence Baylee is seeking.
I went into Left thinking I was getting one thing, and got something so much better. Left is a beautiful story that I think woman should really read. While domestic violence is a main plot point, it does not overshadow everything in the book. Lighthearted moments interrupt the dark story points, making a story that could have been deeply dark into something that most would enjoy. I know that I would not mind reading another in the Still Standing series.
**Unabridged Bookshelf received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review**
I cannot say how much I enjoyed this book. I mean, everything was so hectic and I had to squeeze this book in to be able to do the tour. And after I started, I couldn't stop. Like, at all.
LEFT tells the story of Baylee. Baylee thought that she loved the right man, she thought that Colt was going to propose to her but instead, he dumped her. Baylee is weak or fragile like most with her past. Her mother committed suicide and everybody expects her to do that too. She has no one, her father is barely there, but Baylee is strong and puts up with everything. That's what I liked most about her.
And Ryker. I fell in love with him straight away when he got introduced. He's kind, such a gentleman and most of all? HOT! Haha! He cares for Baylee and he isn't the type of men who take advantage of women when they are in a weak moment. I love his mum too. She was such a great addition to the book.
The book made me feel happy to giddy, angry to absolute bat-arse mad. I just couldn't put this book down. And near the end, it had me in shock. I mean, HOW COULD HE DO THAT?? (Read it and you'll know what I'm talking about)
The ending wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, but Baylee and Ryker's story will continue onto the second book. I'm so excited!! I can't wait to see what's going to happen next in their relationship!!
This was an interesting story where the plot seems like it's been done before but the way the author was able to pull emotions (laughing or on the verge of tearing up) out of me several times throughout the book really impressed me... I was able to read this book in one day, which goes to show how it really pulled me in... There was a feeling that some of the things that happened in this story weren't really realistic (like Ryker not knowing who Colt was, the connection between everyone, Baylee's promotion, the timeline) but at the same time those things weren't over the top to the point where I couldn't enjoy the book...
Baylee was definitely naïve and there were times when I wanted to scream at her to get it together! Stop trying to save him and save yourself!! Really, you're not going to question that situation??? But I guess there wouldn't be a story if she had been portrayed any other way... Even with all of that I didn't mind her character, but she definitely wasn't a heroine I loved...
Ryker was sweet and funny... I liked how observant he was... I could see how his past made him the way man he was... What I didn't like was how easily manipulated he was by Eden and James, at some point I definitely think you should be able to come to a point where you don't feel like you anyone anything...
Overall this book was a good mix of drama, angst, and instant attraction...
Does anyone know when the second book will released?
All I can say is WOW! What a story! Baylee's mom committed suicide when Baylee was 10 years old and Baylee does not know why. Her father is a doctor in Africa so Bay is left alone a lot. She is pretty much on her own! Baylee is so afraid of getting left by the people she loves, that she overlooks their dangerous shortcomings and sees them as she wants them to be rather than who they really are. Colt, her boyfriend of four years, dumps her in a restaurant and writes her a check like she is a cheap hooker. Baylee is heartbroken. A handsome, young millionaire sitting at the next table comes to her rescue and Colt loses his mind. In the following two weeks, Colt shakes her so hard she gets whiplash! Then he throws Baylee over a table, breaks her wrist and gives her a concussion. Still Baylee makes excuses for Colt. Next he kidnaps her and slit her wrists while telling her how much he loves her! Unbelievable!!!! If this is not a clear cut warning about domestic violence, I don't know what is!
Left begins with a suicide that shows us the reality of how loss and emotion can destroy a life if no one is there to help. Graves then moves us into a world where domestic violence is real and shows us through her characters what it is like to deal with a difficult situation and how the main character Baylee learns that what is wrong with her world is classified as domestic violence. It is something that moves into Baylee’s life slowly and when she realizes what is going on it almost destroys her. Graves sends a strong message in the pages of this book she quotes it in the beginning “Your own two feet are all you have when you’ve been …left.” (T. R. Graves) Strength has to come from within, but sometimes to find it you have to meet others that have survived it. Left will hold your attention and will open your eyes as well. This story will provide you a read you will not soon forget. Bella Doerres M. Ed. September 1, 2013

5 Heart Touching Stars... OMG this book just has me speechless. The emotions and pain that T.R portrays in this book is beyond real and had me ugly crying!! Baylee is an amazing strong character who goes through a lot in Left but outshines it all and is the definition of a Heroine in my eyes. Baylee has been with Colt for 4 years and she thinks that even though their relationship isnt the greatest hes gonna propose. When her world comes crashing down and he breaks up with her. Then the knight in shinning amour Ryker walks into her life and she is amazed with him as he is with her talk about love at first sight. Though that my sound like the perfect end to a good read there is so much more to this story that I will not go into detail with. This book had me emotionally drained by the end of this read had my heart in pieces but thanking T.R for writing such a touching story!! ~Raquel~
This book is amazing with so much emotion I don't even know where to start. Everything about this book is so captivating it just sucks you right in. The love, the anger, the deception/betrayal and lets not forget the crazy. Oh my goodness the crazy....there are no words. It's unbelievable to see how fast someone can spiral out of control. Baylee comes to terms with the fact that she can't take Colt back because he's being controlled by his father and will never be his own man yet she ends up with Ryker who is also to an extent being controlled by his father figure/daughter. I hope he doesn't get sucked under and end up in Colt's shoes losing the best thing that's ever happened to him as well. She's been there and done that I'm sure she doesn't want to repeat herself. As she's learned sometimes no matter how much you love someone walking away may just be the best thing for you and them
This is a fantastic read! The combination of a woman's strength & pureness of mind & body combined with the message of domestic abuse was told so brilliantly told that I never lost interest. Baylee & Colt seem to be the perfect couple until events start happening that will take your breath away. When Ryker comes on the scene, you'll lose your breath also, but for VERY different reasons! Definately for adult readers, you might find yourself making comparisons between Ryker and Christian Grey, but this lady will take Ryker any time! Kudos to Ms. Graves for bringing domestic violence to light in a book that is sure to be read by many. And I DO love that I personally know many of these landmarks & more that one brought a smile to my face. Now, can we get busy on "Still Standing"#2, please?
Wow! I Loved it!!! I had such a book hangover at work this morning lol. I started reading it last night and was up way too late...I could not put it down!!! It was definitely worth it though. I really connected with the main character Baylee. And Ryker....wow!!! He sounds so yummy!!! Some of those scenes were hot, hot, hot!!!! And it helps that he is an amazing guy too. There were a couple of twists that I definitely did not see coming!!! I was crying hysterical at one point too! There are some things that happen in this book that should open up people eyes to something that happens way too much every day in this world. I highly recommend Left! T.R. Graves is an amazing writer!!!
