There is no time for peace. No respite. No forgiveness. There is only WAR.
In the nightmare future of the 41st Millennium, Mankind teeters upon the brink of destruction. The galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man is beset on all sides by ravening aliens and threatened from within by Warp-spawned entities and heretical plots. Only the strength of the immortal Emperor stands between Humanity and its annihilation. In his name, countless warriors and agents do battle against the encroaching darkness. Foremost amongst them stand the Space Marines, the ultimate protectors of Mankind.

Across airless moons, within the depths of dark, twisted hive worlds and even in the immaterial realm of Warp space, battles rage that will shape the future of the galaxy forever. It is a universe that you can enter today, if you dare. But remember that this is a dark and terrible era, and there is no peace amongst the stars...

Having read, and greatly enjoyed, the Warhammer 40K novels and having enjoyed the sourcebooks for the Horus Heresy- I figured I'd buy the original sourcebook for the game itself. I am glad I did. Now, I do not play the table top strategy game but I do love the world that has been created for it.

It is a world of the Human Empire locked in a galactic struggle for supremacy and its very existence. This book spends the first part on the rules surrounding the actual game, since I don't play I skipped it. But the middle and end sections are chock full of information. We have a full description of the setting of the 41st Millennium. If you ever wanted to know about the Imperium of Man and all it's sundry organizations such as the Inquisition, or the High Lords of Terra-all the way to the Adeptus Astra Telepathica or the Adeptus Arbites it's all here. The hierarchy is broken down and each component is explained (this will help any book readers who stumble across certain odd organizations will and satisfy your curiosity).

The book also delves into the Warp and how humanity travels through it, not to mention the various dangers that lie withi the Warp. We see how the Imperium levies its tithes upon the various worlds and also learn about the various types of worlds from Forge Worlds to Hive worlds. There is an excellent section on the Imperial religion and a great deal of information about Psykers. I also enjoyed the section on Imperial History as tens of thousands of years of conflict are set down over several pages as blurbs, but you get a feel for the time and location of the famous battles. Finally there are many pages dedicated to the Adeptus Astartes (the Space Marines) who really are the focal point of much of the lore. Various chapters, their history and their insignia are explored. The book does not stint on knowledge about the other races as well from Eldaar to Orks and Chaos Marines to the Necrons.

Each section is very well written and there are copious charts and truly stunning artwork to accompany each entry. I do not know if I will ever play the game (though it does seem interesting) but I am certainly glad I now have this as a reference book to my novels. If you're a tabletop gaming fan or just enjoy the novels-I think you will find this an invaluable resource. Highly recommended for any Warhammer 40K fan.

This rulebook was an amazing read. This hobby has come so far since I started playing originally in the mid-90s. A full colour book, filled with the amazing stylings of John Blanche, it is a joy to hold, read and just simply flip through. The rules are laid out very well and the book is filled with amazing background material and stories throughout. The photos of miniatures, terrain and dioramas are on the same level. All around one of the best game system books I have ever read and well worth the money.

It took me very long to read this in its entirety and that is not a reflection on the quality of the tome (and it can truly be called that) but rather the fact that I was always reading this on the side, alongside a number of other books. I had a lot of fun reading this cover to cover and I can only recommend anyone seriously interested in Warhammer 40K do the same.

I have played 40k in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th edition rules sets and I have to say that 6th Ed looks like it's going to be the overall best so far. There's lots of nice little rules that are going to make your games more cinematic and immersive. Also, they seem to be taking a detour from the simplified rules that were geared towards competitive play and limiting the effect of chance. That's what took me away from the game during 5th, and so I'm really looking forward to getting back into the game again! The book is laid out well with everything in its logical place, which makes it easy to navigate.

For a Games Workshop product the book is pretty good value for money - an alternative use of the book could be for weightlifting! The pages are all full colour and superbly presented (another reviewer mentions that some of their pictures were blurry. In my copy I only found one like that of a Biel-Tan war walker, and so it could just be their copy). One of my favourite touches were the litanies at the top and bottom of some pages. And on that note I shall leave you with this thought:

"We care not what the alien thinks; that we simply hate suffices."

6th Edition Core Rule Book, another currently out dated edition, not much change from the 5th edition book, still fun to play.

Well, I read the rules. A couple of typos, some that make what you're supposed to do in the game very ambiguous. Aside from that, it's an interesting rule system. I guess I'll have to see it in action. Also, absolutely 100% no fluff whatsoever, which is kind of a disappointment, since the best part about 40k is the fluff.

I can't compare this to previous editions, and I can't say that I've read it cover to cover. I've certainly read quite a bit of it in detail (and will continue to read it over the following months, as we've just recently started playing.

It's a rule book for the best war game I have played (out of the 3 I have played.)
It's a fun game and this is a easy to follow rulebook for a amazing board game
