Duality is the debut novel from up and coming fantasy author Aaron Chumbris. This first work firmly sets him in the realm of David Eddings and other first-rate science-fiction and fantasy writers who enchant readers with epic tales of life, loss, and struggle in worlds very different from our own but with societies and situations strikingly similar to our own experiences.

Duality is set in a physical world like our Earth but with some additions most Earth-dwelling citizens are unaccustomed to, namely floating continents, teleporters and supernatural powers. Society is divided by both ethnicity and geography and the ongoing dispute between Mendora and Solei has undertones of current global conflicts, but Duality is far more engaging than our nightly world news.

Cyrus, Duality's young protagonist, grows up in the first half of the novel, encountering the beginnings of his epic struggle, which continues until the very last page. Cyrus battles his upbringing, his past, his peers, and his demonic nemesis while learning to harness his special powers of Animus Activation.

While the beginning of Duality is slow, as all science-fiction and fantasy novels are with the set-up and introduction of a new set of characters, settings, and the unique properties of their imagined worlds, the pace picks up after chapter six and the action continues to rise and increase throughout the book.

I read the novel in approximately two days and enjoyed every minute of it and am eagerly anticipating the second novel in the planned trilogy.

I would recommend this book to fans of David Eddings, manga readers, and anime watchers. Duality is appropriate for both adult and young adult readers.

***The author sent me this book in exchange for an honest review. The author in no way influenced this review.***

Describe this book in one sentence- College freshman shoots for her dreams while trying to score her guy.
Rating- PG-13

Why this rating?- Mature content and a small amount of mild kissing.

For ages- 15-18

Recommended to- Fans of all YA chic-lit and beach reads.

Stars- Four out of Five.

Why this number of stars-

The Cover~ Fantastic! If you want your cover to be simple, make it at least relatable to the content. Ms. Evans made the cover content related to the story AND eye-catching. Simply phenomenal.

The Content~ The plot was pretty cookie cutter chic-lit, but Ms. Evans added her own flair by making the characters have more depth. It had a bit too many clichés for me, but overall the novel was cute and light hearted. For a self published book, it was well edited and proofread. I think this may be one of the best self published books I've read ever read.

Character Development~ Character development in this novel was stellar. The reader sees the change in how Hannah's mother and peers treat her from beginning to end. Hannah really takes charge, and by the end shows the spine to gain respect from everyone.

Would I read the second book?- This is the third book in the series, so I should probably read the other two first, but I will definitely finish reading this series while at the beach this summer.
