Cedar Cove #12

1225 Christmas Tree Lane

Rate this book

The people of Cedar Cove know how to celebrate Christmas. Like Grace and Olivia and everyone else, Beth Morehouse expects this Christmas to be one of her best. Her small Christmas tree farm is prospering, her daughters and her dogs are happy and well, and her new relationship with local vet Ted Reynolds is showing plenty of romantic promise.
But...someone recently left a basket filled with puppies on her doorstep, puppies she's determined to place in good homes. That's complication number one. And number two is that her daughters, Bailey and Sophie, have invited their dad, Beth's long-divorced husband, Kent, to Cedar Cove for Christmas. The girls have visions of a mom-and-dad reunion dancing in their heads.
As always in life--and in Cedar Cove--there are surprises, too. More than one family's going to have a puppy under the tree. More than one scheme will go awry. And more than one romance will have a happy ending!

I love romances, even those with a fair amount of cheesiness. I love happy endings. I love Christmas. So it seems like the perfect book for me, right? Wrong. This was just too over-the-top-sickeningly-sweet for me. Everything worked out too easily, everyone was too nice and understanding and accommodating, and none of the dialogue or relationships felt real.

I found the characters in particular to be unbelievable. The daughters talk and act more like high schoolers from a 50's era sitcom than 21st-century college-aged women: "Oh golly!" "Gee whiz!" (I'm exaggerating, but not by much.)

And having not read any other books in the Cedar Cover series, all of the side stories did nothing but distract from the main story. Other reviewers mentioned that they liked seeing the characters from previous stories, but for me it was just too many side characters/stories floating around.

”Just like it used to be. These were magic words, but Beth had recognized long ago that the clock only moved forward.”

Someone left a basket full of ten puppies on her doorstep, and Beth (and her two daughters, Sophie and Bailey) needs to find homes for them before they leave on vacation. It had only been a couple of months since she’d found homes for the four golden-retriever-mixed puppies that had also been left on her doorstep.

And now Beth’s ex-husband of a few years will be coming to town to visit and bringing … a friend. That someone turns out to be a much younger young woman who appears to have him wrapped around her little finger.

I read this, looking for a Christmas book via my library, and this was one of the very few available.
It turns out, after reading this, that this is the final book in this particular series, but I doubt that would have altered my opinions on this. It was okay, just not for me. I’d say that if you enjoy her books that you’d enjoy this, but apparently this particular one wasn’t all that appreciated by those that enjoy her books enough to have read all of the books in this series.

Many thanks, once again, to the Public Library system, and the many Librarians that manage, organize and keep it running, for the loan of this book!

1225 Christmas Tree Lane is the last novel in the Cedar Cove series by Debbie Macomber. I was sad to see this series come to an end. I have many fond memories of this small town and the residents who reside there. I was looking forward to this final book and it's holiday setting. I am sorry to say, that I was disappointed in Cedar Cove's closing act.

The novel is basically a re-cap of prior stories, giving the reader an update into past character's lives. It also tells the tale of Beth Morehouse and her ex-husband Kent. Their two college age daughters decide to do a little matchmaking. They devise a plan to reunite their parents for Christmas. The plot was predictable and cute, but was so bogged down by the recaps and prior characters, that I found myself skimming pages. Macomber tried to work all of her past characters into the novel through ten orphaned puppies, but with sixty plus characters to mention, this made the tale cumbersome. I would have preferred a novel more focused on Beth and Kent. She could have included a letter in the back of the book updating us on our favorite characters. Perhaps written by the judge telling us about the folks in Cedar Cove. Ah, well.

I loved the Cedar Cove series and recommend it to anyone who enjoys small-town and contemporary romances. 1225 Christmas Tree Lane just didn't do it for me and felt more like the credits at the end of a movie, with a short heart-warming story nestled somewhere in the middle. I am looking forward to Macomber's next series.

2.5 stars rounded up.
I am not a fan of the overly done "Parent Trap" plot. I found this overly done. Too much good cheer, too many fake smiles and good much unrealistic happy endings for everyone in the town. It was too saccharine. I was definitely disappointed.

What a huge disappointment -- the Cedar Cove series deserved a better ending than this. Honestly, maybe 1 1/2 stars would be more accurate. I am a big Macomber fan -- here's a blog I wrote about her for Heroes and Hearts: http://www.heroesandheartbreakers.com... -- particularly of her unique, honest approach to real-life family problems -- so it's not that I don't think she's a gifted writer. This just didn't do justice to the fascinating stories of all the folks in Cedar Cove.

Here's hoping for a fresh start and a burst of creative energy when she embarks on her new series. I really think this book would have been a lovely gift to her fans as an online Christmas present. I fortunately was able to take it out from my library but this trend to minuscule books with big-time hardcover price tags is not one that impresses me.

I have been one of the faithful readers of this series. I have greatly enjoyed the characters and the setting. "Who wouldn't love to come home to Cedar Cove" is the ending of the book and the series.

In this book we find Beth Morehouse facing Christmas with her two daughters and her ex-husband. She has just begun to develop a relationship with the local vet so she really isn't sure how she feels about this turn of events. What she doesn't know is that her daughters feel that their parents have made a big mistake in getting divorced. They figured if they could just get them together, they will fall in love again. Is it likely that something like this could happen?

I had several feelings as I read this book. The first was that I had read the book before - but I hadn't and it made me wonder whether something similar happened in a previous Cedar Cove book where two children tried to get their parents together. The second was that their was way too much explaining about the characters and summing up what had happened in the previous 11 books and less development of the story line. I would have felt better if we had ended with book 11! This was Parent Trap all over with a summation of all the Cedar Cove characters and was disappointing. It couldn't have been more predictable.

This is the last book of the Cedar Cove series, hence DM decided to dropped on us all 250 characters from the previous books all at once. There were sooooo many people gotten mentioned in this book that I had a very hard time recalling exactly who's who.

So I just skimmed through most of the pages and only read about some of the characters that I remember about. Not much of a going on really.

1225 Christmas Tree Lane by Debbie Macomber
Cedar Cove #12
283-page Hardback

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Featuring: Washington State, Author's Letter, Character List, Christmas Tree Farm, Puppies, Parent Trap Trope, Multiple POVs, Recaps, Family Drama, Marital Woes, Children, Closure, Magic Timeline

Rating as a movie: PG-15 for adult content

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🐶🌲🎄

My thoughts: 📖 Page 47 of 283 Ch. 3 - I was going to read this all today but this is so good it could be the treat I need to motivate me to finish my other books. I love it so far and I'm wondering if I should reread Rose Harbor for all of the Easter Eggs from Cedar Cove. I knew they were Cedar Cove people but I didn't know them before. I think I came across Jolene and Poppy in Rose Harbor but I'm not sure.
📖 208 Ch. 15 - There's so much to unload that I'll save for later. I am taking a break this close to the end because this book is a little on my nerves and I want to spend time with my son. They spent so much time retelling the last 11 books that I need a break from that.

So this book is basically the sitcom equivalent to the recap-flashback-memory-lane-reunion episode. As promised we are visiting all of the characters from the last 11 books including those that moved away. There is no better reason for them to be in town than Christmas, and a box of puppies that need homes is a great excuse to get everyone connected to the current MC. I thought this had The Parent Trap vibes but I wasn't expecting a retelling, or maybe it's part of the trope because It Takes Two had the same obstacle, Danielle. The MC's girls mention a defunct restaurant, at first I was like well they're only guessing, but then I wondered how they would even know of this restaurant since they are visiting from California, it was rebuilt and renamed several years ago and their mom hasn't even lived in Cedar Cove 3 years. The timeline was crazy, Eddie was 9, Alison was 15 and Jolene was 6 in their first book, then Jolene magically shot up to 12, even with the age jump Eddie should be in high school but somehow he's in college, Alison is 2 years older instead of 6 years older, and Jolene is 13, the same age she was in the previous book. There's also a proposal but when I read Welcome Back to Cedar Cove that woman was coupled with someone else. I also had some hair color issues. The roles of Bailey and Sophie could have been played by a young Hayley Mills as their mannerisms were very juvenile for college girls and the conversations were reminiscent of an old movie. Even with the discontinuity and plotholes I loved this story. But since ⅔ of the story is just summarizing the past I couldn't give it 5 stars, at first it wasn't bad but halfway through it got downright annoying. I realized it could be because I have a decent memory and only read the first book just a day shy of 6 weeks ago, (Sept. 2), so what could have reminiscing for readers who took 10 years to read this series was repetitive filler for me.

Recommend to others: Yes. All in all it's a fantastic series and I'm looking forward to the show. I may even read the cookbook.

Very nice conclusion to the Cedar Cove series. Beth moved to Cedar Cove after her divorce three years earlier and took over the Christmas tree farm. Things are going very well and she's looking forward to her college age daughters visiting for the holidays. She has a nice friendship going with the local vet and the potential for it to be more.

But things are getting a little stressful. Someone left her a basket of ten puppies that she needs to find homes for before Christmas. And her daughters have invited their father to Cedar Cove to spend Christmas with them, with the intent of getting them back together.

The main plot of the reunion between Beth and Kent was very nicely done. The more she thinks about seeing him again, the more Beth realizes that she regrets their divorce. She wishes she had tried harder to save their marriage. She's just starting to get excited about seeing him again, when Kent arrives with another woman. This brings her dreams to a screeching halt. Something seems a little off, though, as Danielle is the complete opposite of the type of woman Kent would care for. There also doesn't seem to be much affection displayed between them. It was sometimes fun and sometimes painful to see the way the two girls tried to push Beth and Kent together while at the same time keeping Danielle away. When they were together their feelings were obvious to others but not necessarily to them. I loved seeing the way that they reconnected as they reminisced and got to the point where they could talk about what went wrong. There was an interesting twist involving Danielle at the end.

The rest of the book was made up of visits with previous characters from the books. I enjoyed seeing where each of them is now. It was fun seeing the ones who decided to get puppies from Beth. I also liked catching up with the ones who had potential romances in the works and see if they panned out. I will miss the Cedar Cove series, but will eventually read the new series that takes place there.

Just saw I mixed my reviews up and put the wrong one here...
So now - here goes the correct review for this book:

3,5*
I quite enjoyed this story - it has been sitting on my ereader for years, and I wonder why I took me so long to actually pick it up.

I liked the the main characters, a divorced couple who might still have feelings for each other. Their two daughters decided to try to bring them together again when they are home for the holidays. Sadly the two young women didn't seem to real to me, and were a bit too quirky for me.
There is also a ton of other people, couples and families - I think they have been from earlier books by the author - though the book doesn't say it belongs into a series.
Some of those stories read interesting and good, some felt like a "what happened last time" recount for a show I never watched, and I could have done without it. If there are other books taking place before this one, then fans might love hearing about all of them again, but for someone starting here it felt a bit off, and it was really hard at timea to keep track of all the names.
I especially loved that there were quite some puppies and a christmas tree farm in this one! Also much to my taste - no sex scenes. There were quite some memory scenes of the main couples past - that made the story feel a bit deeper and fuller than some of the other Christmas chick lit I read lately.

All in all definitely a recommendation from me if you like this sort of story!

Reading and reviewing 1225 Christmas Tree Lane is rather bittersweet since this is the last book is Ms Macomber's popular Cedar Cove series. Twelve books later, there are so many plots to wrap up much of this book is jumping from couple to couple to see them once more, checking in to see if their happily-ever-after is still in tact... or we're watching that HEA finally come to fruition. I actually liked how Ms Macomber used the adoption of the abandoned puppies to revisit all the beloved families in Cedar Cove. And throughout the book, the reader is brought back to town, Beth Moorehouse, as she tries to adopt out those puppies and her own story is told.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the Cedar Cove series and this one is no exception. I might have preferred one of the regulars to have their story be the focus, but all-in-all I was satisfied with the conclusion. I will miss visiting this town every year and hope that Ms Macomber may revisit them again in the future.

This was a brilliant Christmas story as well as a brilliant story in general. I was completely wrapped up in this story and couldn’t put it down, even for a second. Macomber’s brilliant descriptions pop, wrapping you completely up in the story. You can visualise each and every aspect of the story, becoming part of it.

I love the large number of characters who are all uniquely and individually developed. In essence you’re reading about, no, welcomed into, an entire community. There is a main couple; however, everyone is always important. As a reader you almost feel like you’re a part of this community. It’s a brilliant feeling.

I read this with my book club and it was a bit disappointing. You definitely need to have read the rest of the series before this book. It was the last book in the Cedar Cove Series and basically just a wrap up to what had happened with all the characters. I'm not a fan of fluffy fiction, but it you like a story that doesn't have sex or violence in it, Debbie Macomber might be your author.
I'm not saying they I wouldn't read anything else by this author, but she'd not high on my list. But, that's just me.

Not only a story about how a litter of puppies find homes at Christmas time, but an update on what is happening to the townfolk of Cedar Cove. Ms Macomber wraps up the lives of her beloved characters in this end of the series book. This one is a must read for those who have followed this series, but imo it is not a good stand alone holiday book.

As last book in a series this was OK in a sense that everyone we've got to know got mentioned. The writing however was very much "this happened, then that happened" which I don't find interesting. The main story line made me roll my eyes so many times with Sophie and Bailey talking and behaving like 10 year olds, rather than the 20 somethings they actually were.

A new divorced couple is introduced. Their daughters are trying to bring them back together. Sounds familiar? Debbie M. manages to remind us of all the characters in this long series and of the main events. Everyone eats a lot of sugary things and everything ends happily. Nothing is surprising either.

What can I say about the series? I was drawn in by Olivia's character and her unique rulings in family court. I liked the first books, the ones which revolved around her, her mother Charlotte, and around Grace and her daughters. And their men, too. But after 5-6 books the series fizzles out and the events cease making a lot of sense. (Spolier Alert!) From the moment Terry decided to cut Bobby Polgar's hair, I should have realized that if the author couldn't come up with a better plot, things are only going to get worse from then on. I never thought for a moment that the reverend stole those jewels. I find it hard to believe that people are so inept at talking to one another (see pregnant girl not telling the doctor who loves her about his baby, which is just one example). And the whole Bruce-Rachel-Jolene fiasco just got on my nerves so much, I was yelling at the characters! What a shame a series that started in such a lovely manner ended like this.

I was pulled into this story by the cute little puppies on the cover. LOL As I read the story and learned that her pups were abandoned which is how I got one of my dogs. My daughter found him and four siblings in a BOX on the street and they were only 5-6 weeks old. And he's the best dog ever! :)

On to the story. I loved it! It's such a typical, feel-good Christmas type of book. Beth and her ex-husband Kent are the parents to their two daughters, Bailey and Sohpie who typically want so badly for their parents to be back together. So naturally there is some scheming going on.

There are quite a few characters in this story that you'll love too. I love the familial relationships and how each family is experiencing their own set of issues. Evidently many (or all?) of the characters are in previous books, so I do plan to go back and read the others hopefully at Christmas.

Blech! I can't believe I read the whole thing... Usually this time of year I like to read a couple of feel good Christmas stories, but this one was just dripping sappy and not even a good story line! Two 20 year old girls acting like 6 year olds trying to get their parents back together (aka Parent Trap), every couple in the book had times were they broke up and got back together, a judge actually denies a couple a divorce - really???? So juvenile and boring! Looking for a good Christmas book to read next - Suggestions????

This is certainly a nice Christmas read, what you would expect from a feel good, happy ever after sort of read. I did enjoy it but found it a bit confusing at times as we saw the main characters being the family of Beth Morehouse and Beth's daughters attempt to bring her mum and dad back together.

What really confused me was the number of other characters that came into the story at different times whereby you got a glimpse into their lives (we get this overview due to the fact these people adopted some of the dogs Beth had been left).

Overall a good and easy book to read, a bit predictable but nice and feel good. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars.

I can see why so many love the books of Debbie Macomber. This is not my typical read, although I have listened to quite a few of the author's books while driving. I think, though, that this was my first "sit down and read" book. I probably should not have started with the LAST of the Cedar Cove books. I enjoyed the storyline but I felt like most of the story was a catchup of the other stories. Still, I recommend it!

I guess this book was just a wrap up of all the stories but I felt like it was too jumbled and not very cohesive. I kept forgetting who people were and there were so many characters in this one. I like the puppies but I know it is not really that easy to get people to adopt a puppy and finding homes for 10 would be difficult.

Debbie McComber is right at home with this one. A lot of life stories going wrong or went wrong. But it’s Christmas and all works out. And the 10 puppies make for a lot of love.
