Hope is a privileged ancestor of the high king, but she's impetuous and adventurous to a fault. Rather than settle for an arranged marriage, she strikes out on her own, disguised as a young boy, desperate to experience life and love --- no matter the risk ...
It falls to Colin of Shanekill to find Hope. He can best any man in battle and charm any woman in bed --- but he has never known true love. During his search he takes a young boy under his protection, never realizing that the woman for whom he searches walks beside him. As they travel, Hope comes to love Colin as no woman has. Desire tests her resolve and her deception becomes more difficult to maintain. Now, as she approaches her destination, she faces a choice: reveal her true self to Colin, or deny her passion --- and risk losing her only chance at love ...
It is not until 60% into the story the hero realizes the 12yr old boy he is traveling with and has a great friendship with is a woman and only because he is told.
I should have listened to myself and stuck with my original verdict: not interested.
But since I have been on some kind of an Irish kick, I read this book which seems to be rather a staple item if one is interested in an Irish setting in the genre. I removed it from my not_interested shelf and started reading.
Where do I start? I could recommend nothing in this book. The prose dragged. Endless internal dialogues, and stupid ones too, mind you. Nothing that would crack you up. Just a lot of a stupid heroine's fantasy. So now we are on the heroine, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS WOMAN?
Hope grew up in the care of her loving uncle and aunt. When she came of age, naturally the said uncle arranged for a match for her, all done in love and with much thought. Hope, the idiotic girl, oh I am sorry, the "responsible", "mature" and "smart" woman that she is, decided to run away. For what purpose?
"To experience life", and I am still quoting: "to find true love."
Is this a Shrek movie or what?
So this woman who was supposed to be very responsible and someone who did her duties ran away from her loving uncle and aunt, completely disregarded how worried her uncle and aunt would be, to experience life and find true love? And Donna Fletcher is trying to hoist her off on us as some heroine who was "wise" and "responsible"?
OK suffice it to say: I thought Hope stupid, immature and selfish. As a woman I dislike her intensely. All her courageous deeds......I don't know what to say. She is prideful, I guess. I could not say that she did any of the courageous acts because she was a mature person.
Then there is the plot. Hope pretended to be a lad of 12 for more than 50% of the book. I honestly do not understand why writers use this for their heroines. I mean, unless this is a M/M book, which would make it hot, where is the appeal of a woman pretending to be a man and then the hero finds himself oddly attracted to said pretend man? I was so bored out of my freaking skull turning the pages, wondering when would Hope become Hope? It is enough with the "I am pretending to be a lad and no one can tell" act. For one, I never bought that "she fooled us all" thing.
Maybe I just have a really hard time connecting with tomboy/mannish heroines. I am a girly girl myself. I wouldn't know how to act like a man even if I tried. Nor do I ever want do. If other women choose to adopt the tomboy style, I have absolutely no problems with it. But I cannot pull it off and I see not appeal in doing that. I really struggled with Hope's "pretending to be a lad" thing. And I was rather annoyed whenever Hope "got annoyed" (Donna Fletscher's own words) because Colin was popular among the ladies. When Hope started "haunting" Colin and this other lady who Colin was "involved" with were trying to "get it on", I completely lost my patience with Hope. Seriously, what right do you have in trying to keep Colin away from other women? It is not exactly you are up for a tupping, dressing as a lad. Single that he was and not knowing that you were a woman, what was he supposed to do? To be celibate because he felt oddly attracted to a skinny boy? I mean, come on, get real, woman.
I wanted to give the book 2 stars but having written this review, I am so annoyed with Hope. I am giving it a one star rating. There is no story, no sexual tension, no romance, no plots, no humor, not even suspense. What we have is a runaway heiress who was too selfish to consider her uncle and aunt's feelings, who wanted to experience life and find her true love before she became a boring wife (and what are you going to do if you find your true love? dump your poor betrothed?), who got jealous because her hero was a lady's man and tried to keep him away from other women while dressing as a boy herself. I don't know what else I can say. Hope is a pathetic female character.
It was a nice story but the low rating was because the story just dragged along. It just went on and on, so much so that I felt like they were running in circles and that it was never going to end.
Hope dressed as a boy to escape, what we thought was, an arranged marriage. Later we learn that she was actually going to be able to choose her own husband, so that was pointless.
Colin wanted love but kept sleeping around (giving his love to several women for a short time). It was poorly put together and full of contradictions, it was like the author couldn't keep her story together.
I loved the scenes with Faith and Eric but saw her kidnapping as pointless. I don't see why she couldn't just wait for Eric to return to help those people (especially if she was so concerned for his safety). Ofcourse Colin and Hope had time to have sex while being "worried" about Faith.
I read this book YEARS ago and I always thought there would be a 3rd book in the series... I mean they introduce a character towards the end of the book, build him up to be "more that he seems" and like that's it. There is no book 3. What's up with that? Low rating is because the dialog was so-so and the editing was horrible. Half the " are missing from the beginning of someone's sentence and I counted 3 typos. That being said, the story was sweet and I enjoyed re-reading this book.
I'm not one for writing a lot that is what stops me from leaving review becuz it won't let u submit it u less it's so many words. Donna Fletcher is one of my favorite writers. Now that I have read so many of her books, a couple just seem like they were wrote by someone else, they just didn't have her touch. Not this one tho. It was excellent. The first one in the duo was even better definitely read it first.
Reminded me of a girl who pluck the flower's petal each time saying, He loves me, He loves me not, he loves me! When she reached to the last petal. How sweet!
After rating The Irish Devil (Irish Eyes Duo, #1) 5 stars, I was a bit disappointed that this novel did not reach the same level of enjoyment for me but I liked the woman as a young man disguise storyline. Still interested in following Ms. Fletcher to her other creations.
I would recommend this book great inter action between Colin and hope also like that Eric and faith were there in the end with their first child would high recommend 👍
I really loved this story. Being brought up in a household of love and encouraged to learn, Lady Hope realizes that she needs to take one last journey before she settles down and marries the man her uncle and aunt select for her. She hopes her journey will lead her to find her one true love, her soul mate, the one to fulfill her spirited soul. Disguised as a young boy she meets Colin of Shanekill. Colin is a strong warrior in battle and as strong a lover. Even though Colin has bedded many women, he has never found love. Meeting Hope, he mistakes as a young lad, he finds himself wanting to guide and protect him. This is the incredible adventure of Hope and Colin as they find that elusive love they are both looking for. As in all of Ms. Fletcher's novels the passion they share will not disappoint.
*SPOILER* I would have given it a five except for the fact that while the heroine was in disguise as a young man she got into like three different fights and got beat up in every one of them. A couple of which her face was swollen and bloody and by then I was like good lord give the girl a break already!!! Other than the girl getting beat up (EVEN IF THEY DID THINK SHE WAS A GUY AT THE TIME) it was a great read and I keep coming back to it.
Half written short story, not finished and not a novel. Sad treatment of original characters. Endless inner dialogue and lack luster romance scenes that went on and on while lacking romance. Characters, plots and communities added in the final chapters for no reason but to dilute legitimacy from the existing characters. The Irish Devil tamed to the level a 14 yr old Miss Kitty Collector with PMS. A great story to pass on until the author completes writing it.
This is a good but, Hope is a bit too stubborn for my liking. I do like how they have faith and Eric in it from the 1st book. They always make me laugh.
The second in this series and I am just loving them so much that I find in the wee hours of the morning I have to force myself to stop reading. Can't wait for more in this series.
